Thread Anybody use both the K63 Lapboard and the new Razor Turret? Trying to decide between the two.
I have a K63 and a logitech g502 mouse and its been great. The lapboard has a very comfy cushioned underside, and the attached mousepad is great and solid. I'd recommend it 100%. Has a really great wireless range, too. Looking at the Razer Turret, I'd have to imagine the sliding mousepad would be a potential weak point / flimsy if it moves, it also looks very small/cramped in terms of room to place your hands/wrists. The K63 lapboard is one solid piece and is incredibly sturdy, with a great ergonomic wrist area.

Thread 4K Blu ray stunning movie demos
Yep. Binged the whole series last weekend. All look and sound great. There were things I had never picked up on even in the blurays detail wise. Silly example: In BTTF3 after Marty demos the colt 45, in the rear surround channel you can hear the salesman tell someone it costs $12. At the end when he tells Seamus that it’s “worth about 12 dollars” I had always thought it was an inconsequential detail. But it’s actually audibly called out. I never once noticed that until I watched it last week. Similarly, Clara’s broach actually says “Clara” on it, and you can see it very clearly around her neck when Doc saves her from the runaway carriage. Never noticed that before either.

Thread Why did Marty McFly’s hand start disappearing?
The biggest plot hole that I've never been able to reconcile is how did old biff return to the 2015 that he left from after giving his younger self the almanac? Doc even says to marty that if they left 1985A and went to 2015, it would be the 2015 based off of the events of 1985A. So presumably when Old biff left 1955, he would have travelled to the 2015 based off of 1955A --> 1985A --> 2015A. I've seen the deleted scene of biff disappearing when he returns, but that still doesn't explain how he returns to the "prime" 2015 in the first place. The thing I can think of is that he is able to return to Prime 2015 because Doc and Marty are ultimately successful in restoring the timeline to the way it was supposed to play out -- i.e. the events of BTTF2 had already occurred as we eventually see them play out so therefore Old Biff was successful and its not just covering up a huge plot hole of "how would marty and doc get back to their own time".

Thread How quickly will the rats flee the sinking ship that is Team Trump?
I feel like there’s going to be a lot of back channel corroboration of previous allegations coming between now and January. If any cases are starting to be built as well, I wonder if any of them are also looking at immunity deals or otherwise. I think once all the lawsuits fail contesting the results, those floodgates will begin to open. Anyone with half a brain in the GOP has to know they are killing their potential political future if they continue to defend Trump during his death spiral.

Thread How quickly will the rats flee the sinking ship that is Team Trump?
Now that the election is called and over (minus any legal shenanigans Trump/GOP Cronies try to pull), how quickly will the house of cards fall? Do you think all those that stood by him will begin to flip? If we know anything about the GOP, they care of themselves and themselves only, I believe its only a matter of time before they begin to go into self-preservation mode, but the question is: With the eventual lawsuits and hopeful criminal cases post-presidency, I'm sure we'll be hearing about the absolute insanity that had taken place during his term for at least the next year. I sure hope whatever governing body that is responsible for document preservation has made a ton of backups prior to this week, because I bet there's going to be a lot of evidence destruction between now and January.

Thread Networking issues - MoCA adapters the way to go?
Looks like the price difference is minimal, but hey. Make sure your coax splitters are at least 5-2400mhz, you can find them higher but that's likely overkill. It's the range you need so that if you're running TV over the line too that you won't get signal noise/drops. Cable provider input / Satellite box Coax Output > 2 Way splitter single input > Output A goes to the COAX-IN on one of the MoCA adapters, then ethernet cable into your router/modem. Output B goes into your wall port to feed the rest of the house / other rooms. This ensures both internet and video signal get routed through the rest of the house. MoCA TV out connects to your TV/STB if necessary.else Connect the Wall coax directly to the COAX-IN on the Moca Adapter, and ethernet cable into your router/modem. Do not worry about TV out or adding a splitter on this adapter. Connect your Wall coax to the COAX-IN on the destination MoCA adapter, and ethernet into your PC/Device. If you used a splitter on the previous one to carry a TV signal over the line, then simply use the TV OUT on the MoCA adapter and connect it to your TV/STB in the destination room.

Thread Networking issues - MoCA adapters the way to go?
Just to further my last post, I replaced my AV2000 power line adapters with MOCA and the difference is night and day. Your use case sounds very similar to mine. They're honestly home-networking's best kept secret short of doing ethernet pulls through the walls. Also, the MOCA 2.5 might be overkill for you. Most devices only support 1gbps max, 10/100/1000 -- unless you have 10Gig ports on your router/modem and/or home PC, you could save a few bucks going with a MOCA 2.0 adapter that runs 1gbps, since not many devices will ever fully utilize 2.5gbps on the LAN. and if your internet is less than 1gbps (i.e. most anything not fibre), then you won't magically get 2gbps internet or anything.

You can care about the quality of the work you put out for your own benefit, but try to separate work from life, just completely leave it at the door. If you're able to recognize that the work you do at this job won't win you awards or go in a portfolio, its easier to reduce the mental stress it takes on you. Clients are always idiots, and your bosses are beholden to them because they pay the bills, just find ways to make each project a little bit creative and use each one as an opportunity to try something new - for yourself.

Thread A Look Back at E3 2000
2001 was my first show.. the one where nintendojo attempted to ask miyamoto a question in japanese. It was definitely an incredible year, 2001-2006 were damn great E3s, when the companies would throw loads of cash into the shows and it was an actual I feel very privelidged to have been able to attend in its heyday. 2007 was.. different, 2008 was really great, and 2009-2011 were just rough. Us Nintendo enthusiast sites all stuck together, too, N-Sider, PlanetGamecube (eventually Advanced Media Network), N-Philes, Nintendorks, Nintendojo, PlanetN2000, I'm sure I'm forgetting someone.... met a lot of life-long friends because of E3, many of whom I still keep regular contact with.

Thread Should reviews from fansites for a specific publisher (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft) count on Meta/Open critic?
I used to run a nintendo fansite, as much self-disillusion we had on how important we were, metacritic weighted our reviews lower than say, IGN, and we knew it. Just because we covered nintendo didn't mean we were super kind to them either, we ran stories that pissed off their PR people and constantly asked us to modify (and refused to do so), and our review scores were balanced too. We focused on Nintendo because that was the platform and types of games our staff was passionate about, not because we were 'sucking up'. I also work at a game dev now, and we've released our share of low-scored games, so I have perspective on both sides, but to equate a fansite's inflated score to directly affecting bonuses, I think you're reaching. Yes, publishers use a metacritic score as a basis for bonus distribution, but as I said in my opener, fansite weighting is much less than you think. You'll be talking tenths of a percentage point, and if the OP is insinuating that fansites have bias FOR a specific platform, then if anything, those extra tenths will help not hurt the chances of receiving a bonus.

I also thought the cube exiting/crashing was cool. The VFX (on a TV show no less) being at a point to be able to portray a story moment like that without having to cut away to people 'watching it happen off screen', resulting in a sequence which also has a "holy shit" factor is impressive. It a cool moment, a borg cube breaking the atmosphere during that moment was something we hadn't seen in trek, and was almost reminiscent of the BSG "Adama Maneuver", which, guess what, was also . If you want to take the VFX acumen of this show for granted, that's cool, too, totally your right, but the fact that the writers/creators of Picard can actually show moments like that on a modern day TV show is impressive and, somewhat unexpected. Is that enough of an explanation for you as to why I thought 6 seconds of footage was "cool"?

How do you propose it gets out of beta then? Autopilot has billions upon billions of miles driven purely from informed drivers WILLFULLY participating in the program which has led to the incredible leaps that Tesla has been able to make with the software itself. It is not perfect. I have had my fair share of ghost braking moments when going under an underpass on an overly bright day, but guess what? I was paying attention, and I continue to pay attention while using the feature. I am always prepared to take over for the car - - at a moments notice. Imagine how much in this world wouldn't exist if we didn't test it en masse first. Autopilot has been around since 2012. Eight years of testing. How many AP accidents have led to an actual death? - one of which being the one this thread is discussing. ( I wouldn't be surprised if we dug into news stories surrounding the other four, that there were probably circumstances that were unavoidable. Much like where a truck crossed a highway and slowed down in a way where the Tesla couldn't stop/avoid.) I wouldn't even consider this one an AP accident because - checks notes - he was on his fucking phone.

One could say that experimental medical procedures, clinical drug trials, or Genetically altered foodstuffs (meat/vegs) could fit that bill. They did exactly that, and also opened it up to fleet use for those who were aware of the early testing phases when it first became available on the Model S. Even when they did hardware revisions from AP1 to AP2 they had a very large information campaign for owners that certain features didn't make it to the new version and were still under testing / not performing as expected.Darwinism is a thing that exists. You can't save everyone from themselves.

Thread Tesla kicked out of fatal "autopilot" crash investigation by NTSB (Up: Tesla to complain to congess)
If you're seriously defending someone willfully using their cellphone and FULLY diverting their attention from driving a 2400kg tank down a highway at 80mph to play a cellphone game while sitting in the drivers seat by saying "but its beta", then man, I don't know what to say. There are plenty of responsible Tesla owners out there (myself included) who know wtf the feature is and how it works. And honestly, I bet the driver did too, and he took advantage of what is most of the time a pretty safe feature, and he lost that gamble.. I would imagine a lot of this fallout and outrage is coming from his family not fully understanding how it worked and trying to find ways to not accept that their own family member wasn't being anything less than a perfect driver. If he took the time to complain about Autopilot in that specific area multiple times to Tesla, he knew how it worked. Plain and simple. It is not full autonomy, and owners know that, if you purchase the upgrade, the delivery specialists make it a VERY important point to inform you of that and how the feature works, how you need to be aware at all times and that it DOES NOT absolve you of being responsible while behind the wheel. You can either a) not buy the upgrade b) not use it if you really wouldn't want to use a 'beta' feature. It is not forced on you in any way during your drive.

Muscle memory is a hell of a thing though, when I first got my 3, I did a very similar thing and had the same experience of the car moving forward (seemingly) on its own. Turned out I had mistaken hold mode for park and accidentally pressed the accelerator pedal with the tip of my foot as I was exiting the car. Likewise, I had to rent a gas car recently and I got out and walked away without shutting the thing off or locking the doors because that's what the 3 does automatically for me. You don't realize things you're doing in a brand new vehicle with a completely different system for starting/stopping/shifting and its easy to go blind to the things you're 'used to', even after a 15 minute test drive. It took me three full days to fully get used to my model 3 when I got it, and even after that there was a long period of learning to trust the car (autopilot) and figuring out the ins-and-outs of how the thing moved and operated under normal conditions.

So I returned to the store, knowing they wouldn't match the 50% off, asking if they'd at least meet me half way and give back the taxes and maybe an extra 10 bucks (so about 25% off). The clerk got extremely defensive and said "NO. You're supporting child labor when you buy from amazon". I said, well, then I'd like to return the books, and he then responded with "We don't do refunds on books". Keeping in mind this is a comic shop, and they have no posted signs stating that they don't offer refunds on books, I point it out and asked where this policy is posted. He then ripped the bag from my hands and said "You've clearly read these, I can't give you a refund." I said "You sold these to me 20 minutes ago, how could I read two 400 page volumes?" He then said "Well we don't give refunds, but whatever, I don't wanna see your fuckin' face in here again, go kill some more stores by shopping online." He threw the $80 at me and I haven't stepped foot inside the store since, as even though they had some cool stuff, there's no way in hell I'm supporting a store that has that kind of attitude towards staying competitive/maintaining what was a repeat customer (I'd bought a ton from them in the past, too)... This was about 6 years ago. And truth be told, chances are high he went right onto amazon and bought the same books on discount to re-sell in the store at full MSRP.

Thread Trailer for "Downhill" - a (very unnecessary) Americanized remake of "Force Majeure" with Ferrell & Louis-Dreyfus
So this is a straight up remake of one of the best dark-comedy films of the 2010s, Force Majeure a film that had subtle Kubrick undertones and a stellar amount of tension that made anyone who had ever been in a long-term relationship identify with one side of the argument the film presented, but the question was, which side were you on? Now, we have the trailer (above) that follows the storyline of the original, but seems to forego any of the tension and seriousness that the original film provided. Who knows, maybe this is all the 'comedy' bits thrown together for the sake of the first trailer / North American audiences, but unless Ferrell is pulling out another dramatic performance here on the level of "Stranger than Fiction", I fear for this remake's ability to capture the essence of the original. Its been done before, look at Vanilla Sky as a remake of Open Your Eyes, it did it well (and is one of my favourite films), and I'm hopeful this first trailer for Downhill doesn't represent a complete tonal shift. Compare the two trailers, which would you rather watch?

Toss up between George Carlin and Robin Williams. I think I’d give Williams the edge because The Carlin Show was a warmup stop for his final tour and he was testing out a lot of materials from his various binders of jokes. Still very happy to have seen both live before their respective passings. Eddie Izzard is a close third, with Bo Burnham taking fourth spot.

Thread Men being pressured or tricked into having kids
My marriage ended over this very issue. During dating / engagement, we discussed at length the desire to not have kids, and we were both on board. We were together for 14 years. Then my ex flipped a switch in her brain and all of a sudden had baby fever (probably because a string of women in her office had recently had kids), and then it was all or nothing with zero room for compromise. So, she left, and "started over", and five years later she's no closer to having a kid because she hasn't 'found the one' yet.

Thread Men being pressured or tricked into having kids
We had two dogs already. My compromise came during marriage counselling where I offered up if she could wait 5 years for us to get a bit of a nest egg / get properly prepared for the mountain of work having a kid was. We were 30 at the time, and she said 35 would be "too late" for her and she wanted to have one ASAP. So the "wait 5 years and we can try" wasn't good enough.

You can edit 4K video on a number of low-spec machines as long as your footage is in a proper editing codec. Something like Pro Res 422 Proxy, DNxHD, or GoPro Cineform all perform exceptionally well in Adobe suites, but come with the cost of higher file sizes. Codecs like H264 or any MPEG4 based encoding can be edited in premiere, but require stronger CPUs because of how the compression handles B-Frames and seeking within a file. Also, you shouldn't be EDITING in After Effects, thats' what Premiere Pro is for.

Thread Koalas ‘Functionally Extinct’ After Australia Bushfires Destroy 80% Of Their Habitat
I was in australia in august and went to a few koala hospitals and sanctuaries, they had mentioned the whole "functionally extinct" stuff was mostly fodder for politicians, and they were merely referencing the koalas that lived around populated areas, as residential development was cutting down many eucalyptus trees. Koala's are notoriously picky in terms of which leaves and trees they will eat from, so these wildfires probably affected the remaining trees in developed areas. The hospital said that the koala population in the rest of AUS was doing well, but real estate expansion was a major cause of habitat loss. I imagine these fires are not helping, either :(

I had completely forgotten that grevious wasn't part of AOTC and kept wondering 'how the fuck did they squeeze him into this movie, it's almost over' - then I realized my memory had melded EP2 and 3 together into one unforgettable mess. Also, padme going from "Don't look at me like that, it makes me uncomfortable" with creepy leering anakin to "I love you, madly, deeply." within the span of a week, AFTER he admitted to killing an entire camp of sand people (women and kids included) is.. a stretch. Also, I dunno if it's just 4k/hdr upscales of disney plus, but this scene did NOT look this bad on my TV at all, so maybe it's GIF compression reducing the colours to 128 that exaggerates the flat lighting here, but yeah.. Its not as egregious as this makes it out to be. That said, the CG definitely did NOT hold up well at all.

The same damn thing happened last election, no one expected a Liberal majority based on the polls because it's all BS. The same thing is happening here. HFR in film requires a complete rethink on lighting (Watch the hobbit BTS docs and you'll see how everything is super bright). The higher the framerate, the less time an individual frame is exposed on the CCD / film, so 24fps does indeed make a difference, especially in low or dramatic lit scenes.

In your zelda video above, it is especially noticeable on their faces lit by firelight. It's a neat experiment, though. The ember/energy/sparks from the first 30 secs in the Zelda one looked aces!

Thread The Handmaid's Tale S3 |OT| Wake up America.
I think what kind of bothered me throughout the planning phase of getting 52+ kids out was "how the fuck are they gonna fit everyone in the plane". We saw in a previous season that getting a plane in and out of Gilead was difficult, even for a small crop duster, and yet here we are with a literal airbus landing in an airfield with zero resistance (and a singular guard), and able to take off without any sort of countermeasures? A "Staff meeting" can only go so far to divert attention away from it, but having an open airfield big enough to support a full-sized jet (regional or otherwise) with zero staff onhand to notify people of a plane landing is a bit of a stretch of suspension of disbelief, considering the rules the show itself established in previous seasons. Likewise, if they're going door-to-door to find a single lost child, and presumably the other 50 or so children are also missing, how did no one think to a) go check on their own kid b) if they were all drugged or passed out too, how did the people conducting the search not break down a door when no one answered? Finally, the roaming search party scene in the woods with the searchlight.. I was eyerolling at how blatantly they were missing the swarm of people moving by. Even in dark conditions, that light would have some falloff, and with all the girls WEARING PINK, your eye would catch some movements (and you know, point the light down a foot or two!). The finale was fine, but there were so many plot contrivances / matters of convenience during the escape where I checked out.

The finale of Season 1 left me pissed off and retroactively angry at "wasting my time" watching it, but season 2 reversed my stance and I thought it was incredibly enjoyable and was very excited for the possibilities of Season 3. Was hoping they'd let them finish it out and complete their story, at least :(

Thread Human body ‘close to thermal limits’ due to extreme heatwaves caused by climate change, scientist says
Again, I'm a monster :P If 'consumerism' and capitalism are the enemy, then all I'm trying to do is make the best possible choices I can given my own personal situation. I still believe individual contributions do matter, and am hopeful that corporations and governments will pick up the other end of the rope before its too late. For everyone who says that no matter what we're doomed, all I can hope for is that sense of dread can be turned into something actionable, something that you can use to spur real change via whatever means are available to you, like voting based on ideals that match your own. And with that, I'm exiting the thread. I have stated (and defended) my viewpoint and been called toxic for it, I've been told that all my choices don't matter, and how dare I be affluent enough to afford the ability to make the choices I have, and therefore I must be holier than thou... but hey, that's the nature of the internet.

Considering I bought them brand new when first moving into this house, as opposed to when I previously rented and had no choice on what appliances were in my residence, I think I’ve done the best I could. I consciously chose to get energy efficient stuff right off the bat. The “replacing” in this situation was a result of moving. Same goes for my car, I drove my previous vehicle into the ground. It was 15 years old. I bought it used and drove it for 13, I’m not the type of person who buys a new TV every two years, it’s about longevity and reducing electronic waste.

And your awareness of your own situation, the steps you've taken to do what you can, is likely more than most people have done. You're taking the steps you can and I applaud you on it. I'm also not going to tell you that you could be doing more, because clearly you're doing what you can in your own situation. You are in the right mindset for meaningful change, and as I said before, any change, even small ones, will add up into something bigger. If more people had the outlook and mindfulness of their own usage like you do, then actual change will be made for good.

Very. And It is not (and was not) my intent on telling people how to spend their money or what to prioritize in their own lives, but it does go back to my first post in this thread: A lot of people will comment and say "we should do something", and then don't. This isn't exclusive to climate change - this applies to politics / voting / gun control, you name it. The one thing I've recognized in my life that I can do to have a (hopefully) positive change in the world is being energy conscious. I choose to dedicate what disposable income I have to try and reduce my carbon footprint, to try and at least know that I'm doing whatever the hell I can in that regard. No one is perfect, and in a thread about the effects of climate change I've chosen to be passionate about it. It's clearly rubbed people the wrong way, but that is also part of the larger problem. There are posters in this thread that have essentially singled defeatism that the only meaningful change can come from governments and corporations -- sure they will make a bigger impact, absolutely, but individual contributions are a huge component of permanent change. Corporations come and go, government policies change and laws and regulations get undone at the swipe of a pen, but if you make the choice personally to be more eco-responsible, it lasts more than the four years of any government's stay in power.

I don't disagree and I'm not blind to that fact, but I think the whole "I can't afford it therefore I choose not to do it" argument is an unfortunately flawed one. A lot of people can't afford a lot of things, but if you manage to make even a small change when possible, it will eventually cascade into a bigger change down the line. I didn't switch my home over to all the smart shit overnight, it took years of buying one plug here or one plug there instead of getting myself some shitty fast food for dinner. Keep an eye on sales for LED lights, look for incentives to help lessen the burden of cost - if you're serious about helping and don't want to just armchair comment (and I am NOT saying that applies to anyone here / in this thread), then the effort should be made.

Everything but the electric car /applicance switchover can be done on a modest budget. LED bulbs aren't that expensive, simple smart plugs can be had for $20 -- throw one of those ahead of a $10 powerbar that you plug your tv/console/pc into and you're on your way. Not sure what my financial situation has to do with anything, just be conscious of your consumption, do your best to reduce it, and it will fucking help.

Says the person on the internet forum, what steps have you personally taken to curb global warming? (not an attack, it's an actual question) I've: - Replaced all bulbs with LEDs - Set all major electronics and vampire draining tech to be on killswitches when not in use (smart plugs to fully block power drain) - Replaced the entirety of my appliances with energy efficient ones - Utilize rain barrels to reduce water consumption - Own an electric vehicle I'm working towards solar as my main source of energy as well, but that's an affordability thing. Far too many people say "We should do something" but then proceed to live their life thinking individual choices don't matter, but they do, because the less we end up using, the less needs to be generated and hopefully it all trickles back upward.
