Kind of sad that a whole thread dedicated to mashups doesn't include the two GOATs, Ludachrist and Kids & Explosions. Ludachrist is just dirty, grimy, make you want to shake in your boots mashup mixes from over a decade ago. Kids & Explosions is basically an art project, but it's just so good.

Thread Does Cosmic Horror still scare you?
I feel what you are describing is more "Lovecraftian Horror" rather than cosmic horror. I tend to look at cosmic horror as more broad; dealing with the unknown and the unknowable, man's insignificance in the face of something greater, and the resulting madness. Stuff like The Terror, The Lighthouse, and SCP all instill that feeling in me without really leaning into actual Lovecraft cliches.

Thread Why is it that we have so many Metroid clones but nothing is as good as the best Metroid games?
I truly wish I could get into Hollow knight the way that other fans of the genre seem to. But what I actually wish is that Hollow Knight didn't take quiiiite so much inspiration from Dark Souls and just made it enjoyable to actually spend time in that world. It's also just like 2-3x the length that I want a good Metroid-like to be. I got 20 hours in before I realized that I wasn't anywhere close to finishing and just sorta turned it off. For those like me who did not click with Hollow Knight, what other modern Metroid-likes do you enjoy? I do still love the genre, but I don't really care for the intermingling of Soulsborne gameplay elements that seems so prevalent these days, and I especially do not care for incorporating the ethos of Soulsbornes (ie: the player must be punished at every turn or it's not rewarding).

Thread Games that won't let you figure shit out by yourself (Control spoilers)
I will say that it's pretty funny that even with that guidance, I could not figure out what the hell I was trying to look for with this puzzle. I literally just tried random permutations until it worked. I think the problem is less the hand holding and more the unintuitive nature of certain puzzles. That leads to confusion during playtesting, which should in turn lead to fixing the puzzles themselves, but that isn't always the case. Here, it seems like they felt the best solution was to have the character say the same tip dialogue over and over. If you were already confused like me, this just did nothing to fix it. I literally think I got through this one just by sheer brute force...

Thread Non Junji Ito Horror Manga Recs?
Someone I love who I never see discussed these days is Suehiro Maruo. I think he's actually the strongest pure illustrator among the popular horror mangakas. I'm not sure how many of his works are translated into English, but I do think they can be appreciated even without full understanding of the language. Uniquely dark and beautiful works. I was trying to find something to post here, but it's all a little over the top and may or may not be acceptable content for this site. Google him for sure. I also adore Hideo Yamamoto, who did and . Both of those are some of my absolute favorite pieces of disturbing literature and are worth checking out depending on your various sensibilities. Finally, Shintaro Kago has some really incredible works as well. Check out or . I've heard good things about his recent also. Now my whole post comes with the caveat that you have a tolerance for extremely disturbing imagery and subject matter.

I kinda have to say, if you aren't seeing counter wars going on, then you aren't really playing in competitive environments. Basically every competitive table has *at least* one deck that will run numerous counterspells. Generally, what you're looking to do with those counters is protect your own combos from going off, not stop other players' (depending on your decks' strategy of course). I daresay this is actually better than Force of Negation in CEDH. I know I want a copy for every single deck I run with blue. My only non-blue deck being Gitfrog, and dear lord do I wish I could run this in there.

Thread Opinion: The Amount of Remakes We Had Proves that Old AAA Games Are Still More Creative
I have been playing games for over 30 years now. I love classic gaming with all my heart and go back to revisit old games all the time. We are in a golden age of gaming especially if you are talking creativity and variety. Never in the history of the medium has there been more choice in the types of games you can play. Over the past few months, I went from Kentucky Route Zero to Animal Crossing to FF7R. None of these games are similar in the slightest, but all are immensely creative and unique. I don't know. If you feel like older games were more creative, it's honestly just nostalgia talking. Has OP ever played an Annapurna Interactive game? Try out Donut County or Sayonara Wild Hearts, or What Remains of Edith Finch or the aforementioned KR0 and then come back and let us know how you feel about modern day creativity in games. Hell, we at Perfect World released Remnant: From the Ashes last year which is honestly not like any other game I had played (in spite of any superficial similarities people may have drawn).

I don't think I have seen anyone mention this here yet, but Joel McHale and Ken Jeong launched a podcast recently since they have been stuck at home, and it's pretty great. Just a whole lot of them alternating between brutal mockery and effusive praise. It's been a great watch so far, and I am onboard for the whole thing. Hopefully, this blows up and coupled with Community's success on Netflix we actually see that movie we've been hoping for the past decade. The biggest blocker is probably Dan Harmon, who is undeniably his own worst enemy.

It's the whole reason alt-righters went with that symbol to begin with. It's fairly innocuous and known to most people as the okay sign. Those who are a little younger probably know it more as the circle game nonsense (which was very big on 4chan). there's a lot of plausible deniability here, but generally when I see someone use it like that, I tend to assume they are trying to gotcha people. It's when you see a group of dudes posing flashing the sign together that it starts to be suspect to me.

Nice, I used to live right down the street from that location. I think a few different restaurants have rotated through there, but I appreciated some ability to get Mexican food in NYC that didn't suck. To the OP, I really recommend trying to plan some meals too. And night life. You are going to regret it if you don't take advantage of the two best parts of NYC. I don't know you, so maybe you have a true passion for urban parks and need to see as many of them in NYC as you can while you're there. But for me, I'd burn out on that schedule pretty fast. Too much sightseeing, not enough sight doing. I posted it here before, but the nonsense NYC mailing list is a great resource for more off beat things to do in NYC that may be a little more unique to the city.

This does not sound like a very fun way to experience New York in my opinion. All you're doing is looking at parks and buildings. I feel like those exist in every major city. The things that make New York special are the music, art, food, theater and fashion scenes in my opinion. If you really want to have an interesting time in NYC, I recommend signing up for something like . You'll get some inside tips on some of the more off-beat events happening while you're in town. I'd also look more at planning things to do rather than places to see, but maybe that's just me. Go see a concert, watch some stand-up, catch an off Broadway play, eat some bomb food, go to an underground art party in Brooklyn. Don't just like walk across a bridge and stare at buildings.

Thread So...Marilyn Manson's two latest records are actually damn great and i had no idea.
I was the biggest Manson fan you could possibly imagine back in the mid-90s, starting with Portrait of an American Family and up through Anitchrist Superstar. I could never get into Mechanical Animals, and everything after that just lost the edge that had drawn me to Manson in the first place. Everything had this newfound pop sheen that just did not work for me in the slightest. Even now, I'd rather go back and listen to early Spooky Kids demos than anything from MA onwards. A bunch of that probably has to do with nostalgia over feelings of youthful rebellion, but whatever the reason, it holds true. Reading the responses in here though, it sounds like a lot of people like his post-MA work more than his pre-MA work. I might have to go back and listen to some of these newer albums that I only gave one listen to before. My tastes have changed a lot since middle school though, so let's see what actually clicks with me these days.

Sad that this game isn't getting more love on Era. I know that it's probably not most people's cup of tea, but wow, the acid-laced, neon-soaked retelling of 'How Stella Got Her Groove Back' worked for me on pretty much every level. I don't see nearly enough psychedelia in games these days, so this game was the type of intense face melting experience that I didn't even know I was missing until I booted it up. I do get how there are a lot of gamers who would not be interested in the type of experience on offer here, but I hope the game can find the audience it definitely deserves.

Sorry everyone! It is a holiday in the US and I was traveling back from PAX West today, so it has been hard to stay on top of this. It does appear that people who pre-ordered are unable to download the game. I do apologize to any of you who find themselves in this predicament. We are working on resolving this as soon as we can, but as I said the holiday is making it difficult. Yup. Invisibles is probably my favorite comic and much of it I consider unadaptable. Of course, that's what I would have said about Doom Patrol and look how great that turned out. I now have high hopes. I feel like I might have a different perspective on edginess than a lot in this thread. Most of the stuff here is tacky, tasteless, and trashy, which is why it's bad. Thread I just watched my first Tarantino film! Once upon a time in Hollywood...
Surprised how many people have no knowledge of the Manson Family murders. Did those of you who were unaware know who Charles Manson was? What did you think he did if you had heard of him, but not the murders? Also, did you just thing Marilyn Manson was some dude with a weird alliterative name? Or maybe you haven't heard of him either and I'm just old and out of touch. Maybe I'm the weird one for having so much interest in the whole thing when I was younger. This was a formative part of modern American history and had a widespread impact on the youth of that era. It is generally regarded as a symbolic end to the idealism of the '60s and the beginning of the nihilism of the '70s. That's why using this event was so perfect for the story Tarantino was trying to make. I was worried about how he would handle the subject matter when I first heard about this movie, but left the theater elated at what I had just watched. This is definitely a piece of historical fiction, but it's the "historical" aspect of it that really elevates the work.

Happy to report that there is no weapon degradation in the game. Nothing is gonna break on you. On the topic of re-rolls, every player will go through the major story beats of the game, but there will be quests, NPCs, and bits of lore that you will definitely not run into without subsequent playthroughs. And maybe tragic can correct me on this one, but I believe enemies scale based off your gear, so they won't necessarily be balanced against your Trait level, but they will be balanced against your gear level. That said, I still believe it's possible to overlevel in the game through judicious use of re-rolls, but again, will likely have more insight on this one.

Wow, some questions that is probably more equipped to handle than I am, but I'll try. Speaking of Tragic, the latest Gaming with Gunfire is out featuring the man himself. Take a gander. Thanks! You are mostly correct in your assumptions about re-rolls. From the World Stone at Ward-13, you can re-roll everything outside the base. You do keep your gear and character advancement, but you re-roll the quests, biomes, bosses, and gear that is available across the campaign. As Tragic mentioned, we are working on Adventure Mode as post-launch free DLC content that will change some of how this works, but we are still refining that experience at the moment. Hope that answers the question!

Ok, here's the first in what I'm hoping will become a series of literary themed levels. This one's an ode to Upton Sinclair. Mario visits Bowser's Meat packing plant and learns of the horrors contained within. Been working on this one for awhile and it'll probably end up being my contest submission unless y'all hate it. EDIT: Had the course ID wrong.

Thread PC modders are making Breath of the Wild dungeons, and they’re wild
I'm not sure if this is the right place to discuss this, but if this is the extent of the "themed" dungeons, then I don't really think Nintendo should even bother. I am still holding out hope that if Nintendo does decide to sate people's hunger for dungeons in this game, that they really stretch the definition of what makes a dungeon. I want unique, compelling locations that are thematically strong and consistent and that fit in naturally into the world. I'd love the chance to discover a haunted mansion nestled in a graveyard. Or maybe a clifftop stronghold carved into the walls of a sprawling canyon. Howsabout a massive treehouse in the canopy of a great forest with interconnected gangplanks and a precipitous drop? Maybe my perspective is off, but if we get another 'Water Dungeon' or 'Wind Dungeon,' I do think that would be a step back for the series and not what I am hoping these look like.

I came into this thread thinking I'd for sure be the only one to bring up Enver Gjokaj or Garrett Dillahunt, but leave pleasantly surprised in people's tastes in actors. These two are some of the strongest character actors around, and it's sucked that we just don't see them as much as we should. Dillahunt seemed like he was everywhere on TV after Deadwood, but then Raising Hope happened and it felt like he stopped doing all that great character work in favor of some pretty typical sitcom fare. Enver on the other hand put forward one of the best performances on a show filled with great performances and was greated afterwards with...nothing. Not sure if his look just doesn't lend itself well to variable roles or what, but boy was I disappointed not to see him show up on more shows. On top of this, there's the entire cast of TV's Greek, who popped up all over the damn place when that show ended, but have steadily fizzled out into not a whole lot. The primary leads especially I expected to see more places.

Honestly, I tend to agree with you on most everything you lay out here. I guess I mostly feel like the ban list choices don't really have any connection with what I find most abusive in my playgroup. We had an arms race of sorts a few years back that pushed things to the point where the only viable decks were cedh worthy. Now, at work I'm playing with a broader selection of people and boy do most of my decks feel disgusting to play. If the rules committee is trying to retain some of the original spirit of EDH, I don't feel like they are quite on the mark. Gifts is a great example where I totally understand it being banned...but only if you ban Intuition too. I'd argue that the latter leads to just as many degenerate plays and due to its mana cost can be even more efficient. And yet, I run it. Because I want my combo decks to not get left in the dust when the Tymna player is aiming to Hermit Druid turn 2. In conclusion, maybe the problem is none of these things and maybe it's just my friends. Or maybe partner/4-color generals were not a great idea.

Nah, the EDH ban list is completely nonsensical and random stuff that Sheldon Mennery's playgroup happens to personally dislike. Cards like Limited Resources, Biorhythm, Braids, even Gifts Ungiven simply have no place being banned when stupid-ass Flash Hulk continually ends games on turn one or two.. Sundering Titan, Sway of the Stars, and Worldfire just feel like they are banned there is something specific that Sheldon and the rules committee don't enjoy seeing played. I guess I just have a hard time processing how a 9-cost red sorcery that doesn't win you the game in any discernible fashion is worthy of being banned when there's things like a five-cost Artifact that enables a near endless amount of combos running around warping metas. That's not to say I don't play some of these combos myself, but I will never stop whining about Protean Hulk and Partner commanders.

Goddammit. This is gonna be like Heroes all over again, isn't it? Already getting tired of hearing people complain about this "Micah" fellow. My name is infrequent enough that every pop culture usage of it jumps out at me. How do people with regular names even deal?

Thread Ryan Reynolds reveals first trailer for Detective Pikachu
In all honesty, that looked surprisingly daring for a first stab at a live action Pokemon movie. Slightly meta, a little dark, very quirky. If I had to get a Pokemon adaptation, I'm pretty glad it looks like this. Pikachu having the voice of Danny DeVito would have pushed it over the edge, but Ryan Reynolds is holding his own despite the immediate image of Deadpool at the outset.

Thread Hackers (Re:View) ft. Macaulay Culkin (Red Letter Media)
So THAT'S why he was on HitB last week. I was certain they had to have filmed something else with him. Kinda hope he delves deeper into content creation. I find him pretty entertaining even now and would stick around to watch more stuff with him for sure.

Thread Titans |OT| F*ck Batman - Oct 12 on DC Universe/Netflix Intl.
Ah, I'm rarely one to be deterred by bad CG. That's purely a matter of budget allocation, not a signifier of quality. Excited to check this out. I long thought it impossible to get Doom Patrol adapted to any medium.

Thread The Hex out now - The next game from the creator of Pony Island
Pony Island was definitively one of the best games of 2016. I cannot wait to get home and play this tonight. Going in blind. Pony Island was best when you knew absolutely nothing about what you were getting into. Maybe this will be the real Frog Fractions 2 that I never got.

Thread Doom Patrol Series in the works for DC Universe App
Stoked to see what form this show ends up taking. I would guess it'll be based on the Young Animals comic as that strikes a good balance of being more accessible while still having some of the craziness and attitude of the Morrison run. Regardless, it's cool that DC is digging this deep into their catalog of cooler properties right now. Swamp Thing is gonna be insane, and Doom Patrol is my favorite superhero team out there. Eventually we're gonna get an Animal Man show. I can feel it. Danny the Street is gonna be really cool to see.

Thread Deadly Class First Look
Was always interested in how an adaptation of this series would work, but looks like things are pretty damn faithful. Glad they kept the '80s SF setting intact. With this and Happy! it seems like SyFy is at the top of the heap in terms of comic book adaptations right now. I'm optimistic about this one. Been liking Remender a lot these past several years and it seems like he's nothing but enthused about the show.

Thread Nathan for You | Always Posing Medium
It's hard for me to even find the words to talk about this episode. It was definitely one of the most captivating and emotionally evocative 2-hours of television I have ever seen. Nathan For You outdid prestige dramas right and left in actually encapsulating the genuine human experience in a way that resonated to deeply with me. I often find that there is an undercurrent of humanity to Nathan's work that impacts me emotionally, but this episode was on a whole other level. The thematic depth on display in this "prank" comedy show on basic cable is pretty awe inspiring. If this ends up having been the finale of this fantastic series, it would have been worth it. But then again, I said the same damn thing after The Hero. Can't believe Nathan pulled off something even more remarkable.

Thread are standing desks worth it?
I try to use them at work whenever my workplace will accommodate. I don't really have back pain so much as I have sciatic pain, but either way it can be related to sitting for extended periods of time. I currently don't have a standing desk, and I am really starting to miss it. The transition is weird at first, but my sciatica is made so much better simply by changing this habit.

Thread Magic: the Gathering |OT| Core Set 2019 - In the midnight hour, she yelled "Core! Core! Core!"
Tying Brawl to Standard is what makes it appealing to me though. I have no interest in playing Standard due to the monetary investment for so many cards that I will never use again once they rotate out of Standard. Brawl allows me to crack a box or two for home drafts and then throw together a whole bunch of decks, which -- while not perfectly optimized -- are still fun to play. Brawl feels a lot closer to the kitchen table Magic I used to play before I got old enough to buy my own cards, and I love it for that. I'm not sure how excited I will still be come rotation in the Fall, but I imagine I'll just buy a few boxes of Return to Return to Ravnica and make do with that.

Yeah, either that or Flashpoint Speed Force shenanigans are basically the only way they could explain this away. I mean, Phoenix and Leto are basically the same age, right?

Thread Magic: the Gathering |OT| Core Set 2019 - In the midnight hour, she yelled "Core! Core! Core!"
My friends and I made a full custom cube with cards designed around Marvel, DC, Star Trek, Star Wars and some other random nerd properties. Drafting that is probably the most fun any of us can possibly have with the game of Magic. Thought about posting it here at some point, but all the art is stolen off of Google searches and I wasn't sure how people would feel about that.
