Thread The ESA sets dates for E3 2021 (June 15 to 17)
We will almost certainly have either a somewhat reliable cure, a vaccine or enough herd immunity (but likely at least two of the three) that it won't be a major issue in 14+ months. But yes, some of the measures, like masks and increased hygiene and much less tolerance for people being visibly sick in public spaces/at work, will remain with us going forward.

Thread The Last of Us Part II and Iron Man VR delayed until further notice
These lockdowns are supposed to buy us time to not overload the health care capacity with too much people needing urgent care simultaneously until 1) enough people contract this and recover that the virus will have a hard time spreading rapidly in a population that is partially immune 2) we find a somewhat reliable cure to drive the mortality down 3) we have a tested vaccine. At least one of those first two things are reasonably likely to happen this year, and the third will likely happen in 2021. I know things seem to be grim right now, but you need to realize it's been only two months and a lot has happened and some progress has already been achieved. We might be in a substantially better position vis-a-vis this disease in another two or three months.

Everything was a lot emptier the first week after the quarantine was first imposed. Yesterday the streets were full of people again - they all had masks on, but otherwise, it was business as usual. OTOH, my SO works as an IT developer for a major bank with extremely strict security measures, and somehow their whole team had been able to work from home for the past several weeks, with only a skeleton crew of less than 5 people on site. I don't believe these constraints are impossible to overcome, if you really prioritise health of your employees.

As someone who platinumed it, yes, some of the fights are definitely a bit bullshit. It would be better if they provided difficulty options, however, I believe you can really cripple yourself with bad build choices, especially early on. I'm not great at precise aiming with the controller and I still more or less breezed through the game (including many optional bosses that were troubling for people here and on reddit) because Launch is OP and I stacked health.

Severe lockdown for a month, to blunt the curve and prepare the hospitals and systems, and then hopefully gradual loosening of restrictions with preemptive contact tracing and dynamic smaller shutdowns where necessary.

I'm starting to think that the US has a different strain of this than Europe or even China. Because Chinese numbers have shown 0.2% mortality in people under 50, and while I understand people being wary of Chinese numbers, Italian official statistics from week ago shown that out of 800+ dead, just 12 were under 50 and the Italian government said "more than 99% of the dead had at least one serious comorbidity". It's hard to reconcile with all these posts and tweets from the US saying "a friend's friend who was 30/40 and perfectly healthy just died from this".

Based on some testing (in Iceland and in one Italian village where they tested absolutely everyone regardless of symptoms) it seems so far that more than 50% of the infected are completely asymptomatic. Which is good news because the true mortality will be lower than they thought, probably, but it's bad news because even the asymptomatic people are contagious.

Thread DOOM Eternal |OT| Hell's Bells
I don't have an issue with its difficulty. I have an issue with the constraints the core gameplay loop design puts on your freedom. Sure I can nuke the spider without destroying his weak point X with weapon mod Y for weapon Z, but it's so much less effective that the game actively discourages you from doing your own thing. You have to switch weapons constantly, you have to set enemies on fire, you have to use your chainsaw (which is relegated to "oh shit there's an annoying red alert in the middle of my screen" button instead of the "awesome one hit kill + extra resources" button it was in 2016), you have to target weak points. I understand the design idea, and I totally get this kind of gameplay is exactly what some people want. No contest there. But for me, these imposed limits make for a significantly less entertaining game.

Guarma chapter in RDR2. I don't actually have any issues with the setting itself, but it's super linear and jarring compared to the rest of the game. Thanks, I will probably give it a couple more shots tomorrow. I loved the game otherwise and think it's miles better than the first one in every aspect (I did finish the first one on PC after much swearing and almost breaking my mouse). Just maybe a couple of checkpoints, or at least halfway through the chase on Easy difficulty would make it infinitely more bearable. Thanks, I really do want to finish it. It's just really frustrating how it depends on the finicky burrow controls and the recognition of burrow surface at range isn't always great, sometimes you do a Dash instead of Burrow even though you are definitely in range, but the blue circle on the surface flickers in and out and it's just so frustrating.

But I'd argue that a game that allows someone like me, who isn't great at the genre, to _almost_ finish it, while 100% completing multiple levels, and then spikes the difficulty so that I hit a wall I'm unable to overcome, is not a product of "we want to create a challenging game" developer vision.

I mean sure, if we all somehow forgot viruses are a thing, it conceivably _could_ infect 2/3 of the world population, but with us being aware of it and using quarantine and just normal precautions, no way this thing infects 5 billion people, as it stands now. In Wuhan there's 12 million people, even if the reported numbers were undershot twenty times, it would still have managed to infect "just" around a million people, while running unchecked since late November until mid-January. It's in a much better place now, the builds are viable and don't take million hours of grinding to put together anymore, plus pretty much everything in the game except for the raid is comfortably soloable. It's a good game and it improved a ton since release, it's hopefully going to get even better with the upcoming overhaul.

Thread Best fantasy trilogy?
I gave up on the Kingkiller "trilogy". I legit don't believe the final book will ever come out, and on the off chance it does, there's no way Rothfuss will manage to cram all the remaining plot threads into one book. So, Abercrombie, no contest. Edit: if you're looking to get into some quality fantasy, Abercrombie is the best on the market at the moment, plus his trilogy continues in 3 standalone books, which are fantastic, one short stories book, and a new trilogy, the first volume of which came out a few months ago.

I get that the comparison to flu feels ridiculous, but everyone seems to forget that as far as we know (which, again, isn't a whole lot at this point, but still), the numbers concerning nCoV are fatalities/hospitalized cases. For all we know, the number of infections with mild symptoms that are not hospitalized is much much higher, same as it's with flu. Seasonal flu kills about 7% of hospitalized cases, but that's just a small fraction of the total infections.

No, we don't. While you may be right, we don't "know it for a fact". The data from China, especially Wuhan, aren't super useful, because they may be doctored, we don't know anything about how wildely the virus circulated or what other complications the people who died might have had. There's 600 dead, ~29k confirmed in Wuhan, but "confirmed" can mean tested positive and mostly quarantined at home, or hospitalized. There's likely a lot of infections that weren't tested yet. Tl;dr - we don't know what the CFR is. We do know, however, what the data are outside of China. And there are 2 deaths so far, at least one of which was with other underlying complications. It's too soon to tell, but again, we don't "know for a fact" jack shit.

The CFR of patients for seasonal flu is around 7%. The overall CFR of flu is only 0.0X% because the vast majority of people who get it are never hospitalized. If this ends up being a similar case, i.e. most people having a mild enough case so it doesn't require hospitalization, it can very well be around the level of seasonal flu or even less deadly (but of course, we do have flu vaccine).

One thing that might mitigate it is the lack of comparison to less noisy systems. I'm aware this is entirely anecdotal, but people who are locked into one ecosystem (due to friends, investment into first party franchises, brand loyalty) might think the noise is a price to pay for performance that can't be really solved. I was a Sony player through and through, having a PS console each generation since PS1. Sure my PS4 OG and Pro were noisy, and it pissed me off, but I thought it was "normal". Then I got Xbone X and I was shocked how quiet it was while playing the same games. Since only a minority of people own both Sony and MS systems, and I'd bet it's also a small subset of users who would seek out and watch YT comparison videos, maybe a lot of die hard Sony customers accept the noise as something that's unfortunate, but to be expected.

Probably not, but it's not inconceivable. Both Sony and MS will likely be selling the HW with a loss anyway, it's just a matter of how big a loss per unit they're willing to take. Corpo maths is something that is impossible to predict, see MS selling Gamepass with a fairly substantial loss rn. If they think it'll help reap profits down the line... who knows.

If that's the reason you dishonestly claim that "Sapkowski spends more time describing characters' nipples than he ever does describing their faces. I'd say that's rather embarrassing.", then you're right. It's rather embarrassing, but not for Sapkowski. For you. Edit: I'm not disputing it's a noticeable trend in fiction, for example Jim Butcher's (Dresden Files) juvenile obsession with female breasts and nipple description is genuinely embarrassing, but Sapkowski honestly isn't guilty of it. I found his sex scenes to be more tasteful than GRRM's, that's for sure.

Throughout my 20s and early 30s, I frequently pulled all-nighters no problem, that's no longer possible. Other than that, I'm relatively fine, but that's because I started working out regularly two years ago and fixed my diet, so I'm in a better shape than I've been in a long time. TNO followed a very mediocre installment in a once-beloved franchise and I think nobody expected it to be anything special. But then we got a game that did several things very right. It had: solid gunplay, great levels that allowed for a bit of nonlinearity or choosing whether you wanted to stealth through or go in gun blazing, a funny, touching and very human story that somehow managed to portray one of the worst trope characters in gaming as a PTSD-stricken wreck and even managed to pull off one of the more believable romances in video games, plus several great supporting characters. TNC, by comparison, had almost none of that. Even the humor was much less funny to me (even though that's obviously subjective).

It's often a simple equation for the publishers. Will the game sell well enough in that market to justify localization costs? Will the localization make it sell substantially better? If yes, it gets localized. If not, well... And yes, Spanish-speaking market is huge, so I don't know why they decided to not localize. You're mistaken. It's a fairly costly affair, the localization industry in Germany is well lobbied for, and it's not cheap. Obviously, it would still be a fraction of total publishing costs, but it's not peanuts, especially if the game has like half a million words in it.

I got banned a bunch of times, but never because of racism or bigotry, thank fuck. 99% of the time, it was warranted, I got too riled up about something stupid and got unreasonably hostile, that's totally fair and it did make me change my posting habits a little. However, I think the moderation isn't always consistent - my most recent ban was for telling someone to "admit they care about entertainment more than human rights" in a Diablo 4 thread, when they said exactly that themselves (they said, from the top of my head, that Blizzard's support of China was shitty, but they're still gonna get D4 anyway, and provided a bunch of typical fallacies to justify it, like "boycotting doesn't work" and "I want to support the honest developers who worked on the game"). So I caught a ban for antagonizing an user, while in the Destra thread people were calling each other too dumb to understand the game without so much as a warning. Tl;dr - while I generally think moderation here is fair, it would be nice to have a way to appeal or at least open some dialogue about specific cases.

If you haven't played the game through 1 month of subscription, you'd have bought it in a sale later or something, point being, you wouldn't have paid 60 bucks anyway. A lot of people do. Same as a lot of people don't really weigh the value proposition of a subscription on a monthly basis and just let it run even though they might actually use it only occasionally.

It was badly balanced, no doubt, if you were after a gritty realistic experience. Stealing was completely broken, halfway through the game I had 30k grosches + several sets of the best equipment in the game. The further I am in this game, the less I like it. The beginning around Edgewater was great, but the latter parts on Monarch and especially Byzantium are tedious. The amount of backtracking and flying somewhere just to talk with 1 NPC is really starting to outstay its welcome. In the first 5 hours, I would've given it 9/10, but now it's closer to 7.5/10. Also, I think I expected something more wacky, even based on the trailers. Here it pretty much boils down to absurd levels of "corporations suck", which sounds like more fun than it actually is, when the game keeps beating you over the head with it for 30 hours. Even the perks are super boring, +20kg encumbrance or +10% dmg, they really could've done more with this system. Very occasionally, some dialog choices show what the game could've been, and those are the moments when it really shines, but most of the time, it's rather dull.

The leveling was pretty fun, the game constantly threw amazing environments and set pieces and tons of loot at me. I'd say I got my money's worth from that alone. Unfortunately, the endgame was pants. It's as if they forgot all the lessons they painfully learned in TD1. I might come back one day when they make the endgame as fun (and as solo friendly) as the late iterations of TD1 was, but I'm not surprised the player base tanked once everyone reached the very underwhelming endgame.

I gotta agree that the missions aren't very exciting, especially not for the 4th time around. They're very railroaded and set-piecey. But the moment I leave the camp and just roam the world, everything is forgiven. RDR2 does grounded, living open world like no other game In other open world games, what do I do? What do I do in AC Odyssey or Spider-man? I hunt map markers, be it mission givers or collectibles. The open world in those games serves only to connect those points of interest. In RDR2, I just fuck around in the open world, I hunt, I make camp and brew some coffee at night, I marvel at the way the sun comes up and lights up the plains. I spend 15 minutes climbing a mountain because I can. I watch people do their thing in Valentine. I play poker for a while. I annoy some stranger on the road at night until he starts to run. Then I chase him around the map for 20 minutes, yelling insults at his back all the while. It's sublime. There are games that do missions better, sure. The ponderous animations might not be for everyone, sure. But goddamn if this isn't my GOTG despite all the flaws.
