Thread Game devs: What was your break into the industry?
I started posting to GAF around 2001, which led to writing news posts and reviews for sites like Gaming-Age and GameDAILY and doing community things like the NeoGAF Video Game Release List. Graduated college with an English Studies degree and a salaried news editor position at Shacknews thanks to my GAF / NeoGAF experiences. Four years later, picked up by a developer looking to expand its community efforts -- in the nine years since, I've expanded to running entire teams and projects, founded multiple startups, got my Project Management Professional certification, written three books, and also still do the whole thing alongside my industry gig. It still doesn't feel real, by the by.

Well, that’s good news. Could just be a coincidence that mine activated after Morrowind purchase, then.

SSX 3 digital works if you also buy Morrowind digital. Digital license shenanigans, ya’ll. This’ll surely be fixed eventually, but for now, if you’re eager to play...

I hear you on the more appealing stuff, but saying "I'm not even asking for anything super complicated ... just like small stuff" really downplays what it actually entails. And work costs money, that money needs to come from somewhere -- be it Microsoft or the Publisher on Record -- and that opens up a whole new can of worms pertaining to source code access, testing, approvals and so on. That's before you get into the idea that this stuff is easily ten years old at least, so it's a real toss-up as to whether the source code, publishing contracts and original tools are easily accessible. In short, a lot of this just wasn't considered back when the games were first released. Nowadays, there's a lot more functionality that can be exploited and manipulated post-release.

That's ... still a pretty significant amount of work. You're talking about adding new code to implement tracking metrics and functions that weren't part of the original design, and thus may require a significant amount of work to verify and check. It doesn't matter how simple the concept is if the game wasn't coded for it initially.... that's a whole new set of variables to somehow incorporate and verify they function as intended. And that requires either access to the source code, which is a whole thing, or adding an additional layer outside the top of the game to track all that, which is no small task either. Let's not even get into who would be responsible for funding, QA'ing and approving any changes -- Microsoft or the Publisher on Record -- nor contemplate what that'd mean for multiplatform games. And hey, if you're already adding new functionality and writing / localizing some new achievement text anyways, could you also fix this and add that and remove that instance... it's a real slippery slope.

Thread A homebrewed Wii U is an amazing retro console
Thanks for this thread. I've been on a real retro kick as late, going so far as to reclaim a lot of my old GameCube discs from storage and hook the Wii back up, and had absolutely no idea there was such an easy and reliable way to enable widescreen on those old gems. Couple that with the ability to more easily boot some old imports (Mr Drill Drill Land, represent) and this has made life a whole lot better.

Thread 8Bitdo SF30/SN30 Pro Controller
I put it back to back with the base SN30 and it's the same overall footprint. Thickness varies a bit at points due to triggers and analogs, obviously, but outside of those slight bulges it's the same.

Thread 8Bitdo SF30/SN30 Pro Controller
Received mine from Amazon this evening, updated the firmware and ... the rumble is still wonky. It's maybe less intense than it was before the new firmware, but still pretty noisy when it's on -- best way I can describe it is that I'm hearing the rumble more than I'm feeling it, especially in Odyssey and Wonder Boy. Hopefully a future firmware update can trim it down and / or introduce a way to disable it wholesale on a per-controller basis. Everything else is really awesome, though, to the point where I'll just likely be turning rumble off in-game (or via System Settings) whenever I use one of 'em. A real good controller to have in the travel bag. EDIT: Hmm, I have Controller Vibration turned off in System Settings but these boys are still a rumblin' even after restarting the Switch. Guess it'll have to be per-game then, but I was mainly hoping to use these for Mario Kart 8 DX and that doesn't have a rumble toggle... EDIT 2: There's definitely something goofy here. These boys are rumblin' like crazy whenever I arrow up / down on the Wonder Boy title screen, whereas the Pro Controller and Joy-Cons don't have any sort of action there.

Thread 8Bitdo SF30/SN30 Pro Controller
Firmware v1.20 is a definite improvement: vibration is less noisy and far more consistent. Did some A/B testing between my two with one on v1.10 and one on v1.20. There's still some room for improvement, but it's improved enough that I no longer have a strong desire to open the case and disconnect the motors. The intensity itself is still pretty binary, rumble is either on or it's not. Great example of this is the Wonder Boy rumble setting -- there's absolutely no difference between rumble at 10% or at 100%. It's either on (anything above 0%) or it's off... wouldn't be surprised if that gradient is the distinction between this controller's rumble and the Joy-Con / Pro Controller's HD Rumble. Probably also explains why the SN/SF30 Pro vibrates at points where the Joy-Con / Pro Controller don't, like arrowing through Wonder Boy's main menu. Still doesn't respect the Switch's global Controller Vibration setting, either. So for games like Mario Kart 8 that don't have a vibration toggle, you're stuck with it on.

Thread 8Bitdo SF30/SN30 Pro Controller
Much better, in my experience. The overall build quality /feels/ like a SNES controller proper, and the analog sticks are way tighter / better textured than the nubs on NES30 Pro. , I had no qualms with the D-Pad on the base SN30 itself (I thought the NES30 Pro felt a little cheap and stiff) so I may not be the best source on that front.

You hit a bug we’re working to address right now. Until we can release a fix, the workaround is to replay the level from Level Select — the good news is, you’ll keep all the power babies you collected thus far and probably hear some different lines :)

By the way, our Snapchat filter for Trover actually interacts with the game — you can scan objects to hear behind the scenes clips, bring the box art to life (for better or worse) and put Power Babies in your eyes: EDIT: it even works with pets :)
