Thread DF Retro: Mortal Kombat - The Legend, The Arcade Tech, The Console Ports
I uploaded another tidbit that wasn't in the episode itself but I subbed this clip for John waaaayyyy back when the idea first was presented to make a full MK retrospective (and man back then we figured we'd do 1-2-3 in one episode!!). In Norway, Mortal Kombat's nordic release was promoted via the quite horrid sitcom Mot I Brøstet, which featured 3 grown men living together acting like children most of the time. One of the episodes features a subplot of Henry (played by legendary Norwegian comedian Arve Opsahl) wanting to beat the younger crew at Nintendo. He does this by getting up at night practicing games. As you can see in the clip, he is fully decked from head to toe in Nintendo garb. The original clip is much longer (I only uploaded the MK portion), and the credits of the episode shows Unsaco provided all Nintendo related material to the show. Unsaco is the official Nintendo publisher in Norway.

Thread Tencent bids to acquire 100% of Funcom
My very very first entry into the game's industry was in 2001/2002 at Funcom, as a very short time intern. The very first day I arrived at the office, I had to sign what seemed to be 100 NDAs and everyone was drunk because just hours earlier they had signed the Conan license. They got very annoyed because I was more interested in inquiring about how they went about porting SNK games to Sega CD haha!

Thread The Mandalorian |OT| A Complicated Profession [SPOILERS ON EPISODE DROP]
We binged the whole show this week and dear lord we loved every single minute of it! I am a huge fan of classic westerns like High Noon etc so I love the vibe this show has going for it, and my man Herzog is in it too (I avoided spoilers, trailers and even posters for this thing so I was stunned to see him show up). I can only assume Herzog wants a paycheck so he can fund making a documentary about a lonely mountain goat or something, but he is easily the most intense and compelling character in the show. Haven't been able to read this whole thread, but was surprised to see some people were down on the episodes with the AT-ST and Ming-Na, I felt each episode was pretty exciting and suitably star wars, while giving the characters room to breath and grow. Love the whole thing.

One of the reason's for these "shoot the shit" videos is that I did several trips down to John's place this fall to help him produce larger proper DFRetro episodes to load up for 2020. The production on those episodes require a ton of work, and with the demands of DF's regular schedule it proved pretty hard for him to do it all alone this year so I been offering to take on some of the workload to help DFRetro bounce back next year. We shot these reviews in between productions so that he can still put out some videos. Hopefully you'll be happy with the output again.

Damn, reading this thread you'd think I was watching a completely different show than most of you and that JR personally spat a Oklahoma loogie in your faces. My brother and I loved the show, especially the Riho/Sakurai match and Cody/Jericho. Didn't really notice or care about how the crowd reacted since we were having fun watching, but I did miss Tony Schiavone on commentary. Excalibur and JR were great on their own though. Hoping Luchasaurus comes back sometime soon, though most of the matches were really really fun. We haven't watched wrestling together since 1998 WCW so it was a nice nostalgic feeling.

It was released EU only, but the North American release was to be published by Electro Brain who essentially focused on bringing European made games to the North American market. The NTSC version was ultimately canceled due to lack of awareness of the franchise in NA, and at the time there was also a cancelation of some of the comics being made available there so this also played into the decision.

Asterix: The Gallic War is legit a good Risk type game, and has some fantastic music too. But DAMN is it hard after like 30 minutes. Thanks! I got to talk to a lot of the developers back then so it's always fun to revisit for me. Despite not being popular outside of Europe, its amazing how good most of the games are. As my avatar might suggest to those in the know, I was a very close personal friend of the 2 main people responsible for YU-NO's soul, Ryu Umemoto and Hiroyuki Kanno. Umemoto and I worked together on several projects at the time of his untimely passing, so I actually have a lot of his original notes and work from YU-NO that his family gave me as a gift when his estate was being cleaned out. Unfortunately, Kanno passed almost 6 month to the day after Umemoto, and I am still trying to brave speaking about them on a public forum somewhere to bring their careers to light for more fans. The VN can be criticized for some of its content in some ways, especially in hindsight, but it was also a product of incredible importance and quality well beyond most of its competitors during its release. At some point I'll probably collect all of my research and knowledge about the PC98 and make a documentary or something, since its a virtually unknown side of video gaming in the West, though with some incredible stories that rival many of the best stories from the 16-bit console wars. The marketplace, and the developers, were truly something special. Here's one of the last pictures taken of Umemoto Ryu, before his death in 2011. If you wanna learn more about him, I wrote a memorial for him at Gamasutra back then.

A pure hearted, INCREDIBLY nice person. like damn he makes you feel like Santa could actually be real and was an ice ninja all along. Always felt he was super underrated back in the day too. Yeah this is exactly why this video was made, cause Bubsy the design, the original game and even to some extent the sequels (which are marred with issues still) have something genuine in them. The modern day rep that it gets is fueled by memes and misinformation, while the games themselves showcase some fairly neat technical features and actually tries to do something new in Bubsy 3D's case. Bubsy 3D isn't good, but it is so far far far from being the worst, especially when taking into consideration where 3D gaming was at the time outside of FPS. Even the official social media account generally does more harm than good by playing too much into the whole "hey I was in the worst game ever and I'm super annoying" thing. Go pick on Titus the Fox instead.

Going to the movies in the US is such a weird contrast to what I am used to when I grew up in small town Norway. There, we'd sit on wooden chairs with a projector that was halfway aimed at a sheet, while the woman at the ticket booth would tell you the ending to the movie and compare Rush Hour to Casablanca. Best snacks we'd get was pork rinds that were 6 months old. First time I saw a movie after moving to the US people were ordering beer, getting like full meals stinking up the theater and hollering jokes at the screen. Things that would get you murdered back home.

Not just cause the guy is a dear personal friend, but Chris Huelsbeck should be on the list, and pretty high at that when considering his achievements. Not only for the melodic quality of his music, but he was among the very first video game composers in the world that managed to market his music as mainstream, opening his own record label for video game music, having his music broadcast via national radio in Germany, developing the world's first public tracker software (sound monitor), developing the 7 channel TFMX system on Amiga, developing MusyX on N64 (which was so successful Nintendo picked it up), and having a symphony dedicated to his music and again, broadcast on radio. His legacy easily rivals that of Yuzo Koshiro and Nobuo Uematsu in terms of legitimizing and pushing video game music forward. Oh and Alberto Gonzalez too, just cause his music is amazing.
