Thread Has anyone ever gone to the Tokyo Disney parks? How do they compare to other parks if you have?
Tokyo Disneyland is great, though it's largely a similar experience to the American parks, Magic Kingdom most specifically. But it does have a few entirely unique rides like an AMAZING version of Winnie the Pooh and a neat Monsters Inc ride with flashlights you use to find the monsters. Disney Sea is something else entirely, and isn't recreated anywhere else. It has some entirely unique rides, like Journey to the Center of the Earth and Sindbad's Storybook Voyage, set among some incredibly looking scenery, while also featuring a few "cloned" attractions that still largely manage to stand apart, llike Indiana Jones and Tower of Terror. If you can only choose one and you've been to other Disney parks, choose Disney Sea. But it's worth doing both if you can. Disney Sea is a lot of people's favorite Disney park, though I personally find it a little cold and not quite as "magical" as the other parks, though I know I'm the odd one out.Mostly. Raging Spirits could have used a budget 2 to 3x what it was...

Thread Ring Fit Adventure is one of the best games I've ever played, probably my favorite (progress pics inside)
You're telling me things I already know. I feel like saying people can set the difficulty is a baseless argument provided you can already do exactly that. All I'm advocating for is more granular control than the "all or nothing" approach it has--and possibly only when the game detects you're having trouble with a particular exercise
Published

Thread Ring Fit Adventure is one of the best games I've ever played, probably my favorite (progress pics inside)
My goal wasn't only to "complete" the game (hell, I still haven't.) But part of the goal is to have and frustrating the user is counterproductive to the entire point of the game. I literally could not complete the challenge without actually "cheating" as the game provides no way of quitting an attack once you've started. And since I didn't want to "cheat," I had to ignore the impossible ask the game was making of me by neglecting the move entirely. And this is a clear failing of the game, in that it could do a better job of customizing the experience on a per-player basis. It goes to great lengths to ensure you're performing the exercise correctly, but it offers zero assistance beyond that. I'd love to get better at push-ups, but not my making me do 10-20 of them at once which added a difficulty way out of alignment with everything else. I've had personal trainers before and if they saw me struggling with something to that extent, the answer wasn't to force me through the entire exercise without modification. That being said, I think the game's great. It just isn't perfect.

Thread Ring Fit Adventure is one of the best games I've ever played, probably my favorite (progress pics inside)
The problem is that I would just skip the ones I straight up couldn't do. I can barely do A push-up, let alone 20 (or however many it was asking), but since the amount it asks is tied to the difficulty and not your own performance, I had to skip the ones I couldn't despite having little trouble with others. I just wish the game recognized when you struggled with an exercise and offered to reduce their difficultly, and slowly scale it back up.Yoga Mat solved the issue for me.

Thread Disney World is now offering mask free "relaxation zones" in the parks.
Yep, I groaned when I saw this. But just to play Devil's advocate and try to understand Disney's reasoning... I wonder if Disney is thinking of these as akin to smoking sections: a relief valve for those who'd be inclined to remove their masks anyway. At least now they're consolidated in one place and those who don't want to be exposed (to that extent) can avoid it. And I would assume (hope?) that cast members are enforcing social distancing even more vigorously there.

Yes. I still enjoy it for very specific games, but once the novelty is gone, it quickly exposes how shallow a lot of the experiences really are. Even the great stuff is more "cool" than "mind-blowing" these days, though Half-Life Alyx got closest...for a time, anyway. With that said, I'm one of those weirdos that will only play BotW in VR now (likely partially because it's anything but shallow.)

Thread If New Super Mario Bros. U was the only NSMB game, would it be recognized as one of the best Mario games?
This is my take. It would have still been following up Donkey Kong Country Returns, which showed how a Nintendo platforming series could meaningfully evolve given new hardware. 2D Mario used to push boundaries, and while the 3D games continue to, the NSMB games in general hardly do (irrespective of what one may think of the quality of the games themselves.) And I don't think there's a timeline in which NSMBU, as is, would have felt inspired as a launch title for Nintendo's first HD console.

Thread If New Super Mario Bros. U was the only NSMB game, would it be recognized as one of the best Mario games?
For a certain demographic, I suppose. I never really planned on playing 2D Mario for the multiplayer experience, making it appeal to only a subset of players. And while 4 player simultaneous co-op is a neat novelty, it's still tethered to everything else that many have raised issues with. And by that point, Kirby's Return to Dreamland would have already introduced many to 4 player co-op the year before, lessening the impact. Of course, it's possibly it was itself inspired by NSMBW and thus wouldn't exist in this example... (theoretical situations are tricky!)

Both? It's great for some experiences, including augmenting some games that otherwise have nothing to do with VR, but I certainly don't want to play every game in VR--or even most of them. And for that reason, I am skeptical as to its future as a platform given its usage is so much more conditional than typical systems. Also, pretty much this post:For as much as I enjoy some games in VR, it still feels like a burden even when using the Quest, which is arguably the least burdensome headset imo

Do it! That's pretty much what happened for me; was super early into a Master Mode file when the VR update it and I switched over to playing exclusively with it. I also hope that VR makes the cut in BotW2...though I'm not expecting it. And while I agree they could have done more to enhance the VR in BotW (say repositioning some of the HUD), I think it's the fact that (as you touched on) the game can stand alone without it is what makes it such a compelling offering in VR.

Thread Donkey Kong Country 3 appreciation thread
DKC3 is a weird game, being both better and worse than DKC2. The evolution of the world map combined with some RPG-lite mechanics was extremely clever, and the game probably had the best and most rewarding secrets of the series. But it's also a step back in some key ways: Level design, music, and art style. The levels, by and large, just aren't as fun to traverse as the previous two, with the level gimmicks often growing tiresome well before the level's over (see: avoiding Rats in the mills or most of the tree stages). The music, while , falls short of the benchmark set by DKC2, and that goes hand in hand with the more cartoonish visuals (which in hindsight, does act as a sort of bridge to the more stylized DKCR series). I've replayed the game quite a few times, so it's by no means bad. It just felt oddly uneven and didn't really push boundaries outside of the really cool map.

Just got back from WDW and managed to ride it 3 times. It's very good, but fell short of the hype for me. The best part might be the queue, which is fantastic, with the "cast members' truly selling the idea of being taken prisoner (and I had some amazing interactions with them). The ride itself didn't quite deliver on the same level and I felt like it was missing something. It consistently does many things very well, but never nails it on a single thing, and it didn't feel completely satisfying as a result. I have to say my favorite new ride of the trip was Hargid's Motorcycle Adventure overall at Universal. Now that's one amazing ride and might be my favorite coaster period. Avatar remains safe as Disney's best ride of the past 10 years.

I played it just last year on 3DS and countless times on GCN in the preceding years (as proof, any of our Luigi's Mansion Cool Bits videos basically required a complete playthrough). Yes, Luigi's Mansion is linear in that you unlock each area sequentially, but each individual area comparatively open allowing some freedom of exploration, especially once the areas start layering on top of each other, requiring you to revisit past locations. By comparison, LM3's elevator acts primarily as a glorified level select (fittingly haha), and with most of the floors being corridor focused (naturally, given it's a hotel), there isn't as much room for exploration. To clarify, this isn't necessarily a bad thing; I'm just trying to better explain the distinction. And this is only based on the first half of the game, so it's possible it opens up more later.

I no longer ready every comment or every Twitter interaction, and feel better off for it. Also, I know it's tough to keep in mind, but you do truly fantastic work, and anyone harassing you over that (or for anything, for that matter) doesn't have an opinion that's worth paying credence to. And the easiest way to do that for now is to avoid it entirely. I think you've forgotten the point you were replying to. The original poster said that fact that Avatar made it to the top as a "completely new IP " is what made it so impressive. Then you replied along the lines of "no, sequels usually make less money," making zero mention of the "having to see the previous movie" first argument you're now using for some reason. And I simply asked if your assertion was true, why do we not see more original IP on the Top 50 list?
Published

(24448352)

Thread James Cameron relieved that Avengers: Endgame beat Avatar at the box office.
If that were the case, wouldn't one expect more than 6 or 7 movies out of the Top 50 to be original? The other 40+ were either a sequel/prequel or remake of an existing IP. The only exceptions I found were Frozen, Jurassic Park, Zootopia, Jumanji, Titanic, and Avatar. So it would seem being an original IP has a much smaller chance of getting anywhere close to the top of the list these days. Edit: Just realized even Jumanji was technically a sequel.

I literally said "remake" in my post; I don't see why that should get counted as an exception. Point is they were all movies dependent on an existing theatrical IP. But even if we did grant them an arbitrary exception, the list is still dominated by sequels. The fact that you don't "have to any any previous movies" (a questionable assertion) in the series is irrelevant to the original point which was based on "completely new IP"

Oh boy, and you thought I was misinterpreting your position? My stance has always been that the cape exists to be used as a reward by players who are skilled enough to do so in whatever manner they wish. How you twisted it into that bizarre position is beyond me.When you list something as the #1 reason for why one game is better than another, I don't think you should expect it to go unchallenged, especially when the extent it can be 'exploited' is left entirely to the player. As is not having to play that way, which was all I meant. If you don't like cap bouncing, then like, don't do it?

Thread SNES Switch Online now available!
Here was my issue: there is nothing preventing you from playing Super Mario World the way you want as is, yet implementing an unnecessary limitation would restrict how others may want to play the game themselves. Limits come at the expense freedom, and while that isn't necessarily a negative of course, I think it would be in Super Mario World's case. A game which, in many ways, was the forerunner to the nearly boundary-less evolution seen in Super Mario 64. It was largely the unparalleled level of freedom that made Super Mario World what it is and I enjoyed the process of mastering the cape's controls and being rewarded with the option to skip portions of some levels, if I desired. I felt it necessary to point out that you can play the game exactly how you want to as is because your stance seemed so utterly to me otherwise. I didn't expect for it to get this heated, which I think is partially due to us both talking past each other and perhaps not fully grasping the other's position.

Thread SNES Switch Online now available!
Not at all. You've just taken an extremely narrow viewpoint that I'm illustrating hardly matters in a slightly broader context. You can subvert the challenge in both games easily enough if one is so inclined, though I disagree using the cape in that way is as easy or obvious as you seem to think. But even if it were, it doesn't take much restraint to avoid abusing it.My point was it's a game that similarly provides a different toolset to moderate difficulty at the user's discretion. If you prefer we stick to Mario, NSMBW had an option in which it plays the game for you. 3D Land would give you a power-up that made you invincible for the level's duration. Are those not essentially the same "problem"?It's not a matter of caring, it's a matter of fact. If you don't like playing a game a certain way, then perhaps you shouldn't play it in that way?

They were both items that removed the need to platform. I think the analogy was pretty apt; one just takes longer and is harder to exploit to the same extent. There are options to get around much of the platforming in both games. Using the cape to skip most of a level is something that's pretty difficult to do and is more of a reward for experienced players. If it were a common problem or something that's easy to do, it probably would have been mentioned in reviews at the time.Mario 3 had the P-Wing.

It blew him away, both visually and gameplay wise, and he sat down and watched me play through the entire game every day until I beat it, knowing he wouldn't be able to himself, due to how complicated the controls were. Cue the Wii rerelease. I figured he might be able to handle it with the pointer & waggle controls, and though it was rough to start--super rough--he slowly got a handle on them and eventually managed to play through the entire game...dozens and dozens and dozens of times over the subsequent 10 years. I finally decided to push the bar a couple of years ago with Breath of the Wild on Switch and he found himself hooked on that game too (after getting used to a standard controller), having also finished it multiple times since. I just recently got him a PS4 and he's currently obsessed with The Last of Us Remastered. There's no reason that the ride has to begin at ground level, thematically. Hell, you already descend hundreds of feet into the lower lot anyway for the ride entrance. Regardless, it's not like much of anything makes any damn sense in Jurassic World anyway. Despite that, I wasn't proposing strictly putting it upstairs, but as part of the lifthill or as an extension of the building leading up to it onIt's only possibly superior now. The 2x T-Rex encounter and falling Jeep effect (when it worked, granted) made USH's version the standout imo.

Woody also gets the proper conclusion that I didn't realize he needed. But as others have said, it's unfortunate it came at the expense of the supporting case who were sidelined the entire adventure. There's any number of ways an "upgrade" can make for a lesser experience: losing the JP gate, the music, the falling Jeep, the Mickey hat, the T-Rex in favor of the stupid new dino, or the addition of Universal's favorite thing: screens

I was considerably older than the OP, but it too was the most fun entry for me. It represented the biggest step forward for the franchise imo, and whether it was "broken" or not didn't affect how much damn fun it was to play with friends. While the core gameplay of Ultimate might be more refined, it wasn't the relative advancement that Brawl was.

All the characters handle identically without power-ups (except swimming, in which Nabbit & Toadette control like the Penguin suit), so it seems you may just not like how NSMB handles. I'm not a huge fan of it either myself, but it's also the least of the game's issues. You might want to try New Super Luigi U though, as the characters do jump higher and are a little slipper, which you might prefer (it's better than NSMBU in general as well)

I can only speak from my own experience, but it seems recent YouTube policy changes (within the last year or so) have made MCNs much more cautious than before. I know our own network was actively trying to kick Managed channels back down to affiliate and I had to fight for our own preservation.

It's not just a "hardcore" mode, it's a universal problem in NSMBUDX that didn't exist in the previous version, or any mainline 2D Mario in its entire history. It's punishing you now for performing an action a frame or two early when that clearly isn't the intended behavior and has ramifications beyond what the video shows, such as timing a high-bounce from a short hop. The video just happened to be a particularly apt example

Removing the dock (or video out) may not save Nintendo much immediately at the time of purchase, but you're forgetting they'll make a decent amount off some of those same people who eventually do buy a dock at $100 (or whatever it ends up being if they lower the price.) They can just include a charger in the box.

Worst? It's one of the few escort missions to get it right. Ashley exhibits actual intelligence compared to most brain dead escortees, with how she responds to the environment and the player. She follows closely behind Leon rather than following a scripted path and she'll actively work to get out of the way of your shots. And that's all only when you don't drop her in a dumpster to get her out of the combat zone entirely.

Ultinate's online has been overall pleasant got me, with some hiccups; I wish it were for you too. As for NSO, I just can't get worked up about it. What a weird way of perceiving a polite "no thank you" when they were the one who asked to search property that isn't theirs. Who has made it out to be a personal vendetta? As one who also has social anxiety, I owe you nothing more than a polite decline of something that isn't
