A much more agile Batman. I loved all the Arkham games, but my only peeve was how tank'ish Batman felt in all of them, not during combat or gliding, but maneuverability on the ground. I'd like to see a dedicated jump button, smoother navigation through the environment (perhaps parkour ala Assassin's Creed, Infamous or Watch Dogs), more intuitive grappling hook to get around Gotham, just smoother movement all around.

Thread What is the most unfulfilling game you played?
FFXV and MGSV. I was never really a huge FF fan (only beat FFX up to that point which I liked), and I still don’t know how I had the energy to see it through. The writing and VO was far too cringey for my tastes. Everything about exploring the open world felt cumbersome & actively worked against me. The boss battles were incredibly frustrating. MGSV was a departure from everything I loved about MGS (structured linear narrative with copious amounts of awesome cutscenes and finely crafted level design). The open world felt so barren and the missions were so repetitive (literally rescue someone 3 times in a row? Come on!) that I just felt nothing at the end. Nevermind that Kiefer Sutherland was practically a mute. Ah well.

Yeah I’ll need to see more. Kojima’s a super talented designer but as someone who loved MGS1-4 but got burned by MGSV, I’m both cautious and excited at the same time. I need to know the open world isn’t completely empty and that there’s an actual meaty story.

Thread New show for The Escapist “The Joy of Gaming” premiering by our very own Shinobi602
Hey guys. So, I wasn't actually expecting to see a thread get made but since it did, I suppose I'd chime in a bit since I see some conflicted posts. I know about The Escapist's prior history. When I was approached I was a very hesitant because of it, but soon found out that Pitts was no longer there. The outlet is now run by Nick Calandra who's the EiC, and who I've known for quite some time. He's a good person who also created the Gameumentary documentary series on YouTube documenting different game studios and has always been a solid force for good. As far as I'm aware, and I asked because that was my first question, Pitts and all the former staff of his ilk are long gone. I think everyone who knows me knows I couldn't be any farther on the opposite end of the spectrum from a GG'er, and so is Nick. Obviously I'd never had agreed if there were any such ties or malicious things happening around there now. Since there's new leadership that stressed that things will be different with a new team, I agreed. This is only a little side project of mine in my spare time. I of course can't control the conduct of other staff on there if anything comes up in the future. But things would definitely change if anything egregious happens. I hope everyone knows from my character and history that I've always stood up for the betterment of the industry and everyone involved in it. No one's wrong in how they feel. If you don't want to support it, there's absolutely no problem in that at all, and no hard feelings from me. (And I'm really, really sorry for not sounding like Newman). (And thanks for all the well wishes!)

Very true. Nick did put out a statement back in July when he took over: Like I said, Pitts is out and everyone else who was even remotely like him. No GG bullshit will be tolerated on there in any way. I'm only saying that since there's new leadership and a new team, it's basically a new site retaining the same name. Anyway, again, it's fully understandable to have those feelings. But there's some clarification at least on my part.

I’m torn on this a little. The situation with extreme police brutality, systemic racism and abuse of force is well documented, we all know that. I don’t have any sympathy for bad actors. That’s not at all what I’m implying, and I think you might have taken my post on face value. Based off what Rod has said so far, allowing for more player choice and wider open areas is akin to at least one element that God of War switched up with its formula. Designing a pseudo open world to push actual exploration and discovery in the series was certainly a significant factor in God of War feeling different. It obviously wasn’t the factor. God of War 2018 would have felt very different if it was completely linear like games prior. Cory and crew said as much, and anyone can rationally understand that. If you disagree then, well, that’s that I guess.

I would say the core gameplay loop hooked me for a good 50-60 hours. Flying around like Iron Man, knocking people over as the Colossus or dodging, using abilities, the ultimate all in conjunction with other players is just pure chaos more resembling something like Diablo. It’s just fun. The characters were...okay I guess. They definitely don’t live up to BioWare’s more quality games of the past. I think it’s a cool world though. Technology left over by some ancient race that basically left a world half finished is neat, and I like the art direction. It’s just a shame the good stuff is buried under so many bad QoL issues.

Thread Platinum boss Atsushi Inaba unimpressed by PS5/Scarlett: "It's more of the same"
I suppose, but my ultimate point is to look at the games. Things like the PS2’s processor being called the “Emotion Engine” or the PS3’s “Cell” were fancy names, yes they were new at the time (obviously tech has to improve), but the end results in the games were linear as expected. The jump from PS1 facial animation to PS2 for example was huge thanks to the hardware, more memory, etc. Improvements to games that were to be expected. We’re still getting shooters, open worlds, racing games, etc. And my point is that will happen all the same from PS4 to PS5, even though the jump in tech is nothing ‘exotic’.I’m genuinely confused which huge market you’re talking about. VR? Again, we’re talking about the mainstream console market. Even if you take in all VR owners across the world, it’s a small market overall. Xbox doesn’t even have inputs for motion control other than Kinect...and we know what happened there. The PSVR is a small segment of PS4 owners. The vast, vast majority of games played today are through a standard controller input or M/KB.

(22003741)

Thread Platinum boss Atsushi Inaba unimpressed by PS5/Scarlett: "It's more of the same"
...of course there are new things in regards to the tech like improvements in sound, graphics rendering, physical media, etc. That’s my whole point... Those aren’t exotic in any shape or form. The majority of games we’re getting today are just improvements on past concepts. And smaller studios are experimenting with innovative new concepts in the mainstream console space (Xbox and PlayStation) due to more accessible standardized improved hardware, not some new exotic gimmick. We got open worlds on the PS2 for example, we’re still getting vastly improved versions in that genre today simply thanks to hardware improvements. And I’m not sure what major motion control scene you’re referencing. If you’re talking about Nintendo, yes, that’s Nintendo, not Microsoft or Sony as Inaba is referencing. And even then, standard controller input works on 99% of Switch games today as opposed to the motion controller being the standard last gen for the Wii.

Thread Platinum boss Atsushi Inaba unimpressed by PS5/Scarlett: "It's more of the same"
This sort of sounds like a desire to play some kind of weird points game. “Where’s the hype!?” Innovation has always come from the games, sans maybe the introduction of motion control with the Wii, which we can all see now didn’t last too long. Neither of Sony’s or Microsoft’s consoles since they entered the games market were innovative from a tech standpoint. The PS2 was a stronger, faster PS1. The PS3 was a stronger, faster PS2. PS4-> PS3 and the same with Xbox to 360 to XBO. Some things like social sharing began, but that didn’t change the games themselves. It’ll be similar next gen and that’s okay. Having more democratized and simpler platforms also allows far easier access for all kinds of smaller studios, which experiment a ton in their games.

Many times they’re meant to convey mechanics, tone, enemies, atmosphere etc that you’ll find in the actual game but in a flashy manner to grab your interest. You might see a character wall running or using a grappling hook or some power or something that will end up being a mechanic in the game and look amazing in the CGI trailer.

It's a combination. The Order sold relatively well for a new IP, and made profit. Sony basically just deemed reception around the brand to be too damaged or unrecoverable. When you have something like Days Gone that, so far, appears to still have a good amount of positive sentiment (that will likely grow as more mainstream players get their hands on it), it's a little easier to pursue the brand further. If it sells millions and millions of copies too? I'd expect a sequel.

I agree somewhat and I’ve played and enjoyed all of them in the past (hell even DMC2). I think the combat is fun but nothing else has grabbed me so far. The environments are the worst offenders. Everything is so drab and gray and brown and just...very unappealing to the eyes. Every level’s environment so far has been frustratingly boring. I don’t care one bit about V and groan every time I have to play as him. I don’t find his combat all that enjoyable. There’s seemingly a cutscene that interrupts the flow of the game in what feels like every minute or so, and many of them for insignificant things. Honestly the amount of 9’s and above given in a lot of reviews are really surprising to me. I don’t know, I’ve had it since launch week and I think I’m on chapter 12 or so now with barely any urge to jump back in. It feels like no one really compliments how great it all looks, how well put together the cutscenes are, some top tier animation work both in cutscenes & gameplay, the soundtrack, etc. I suppose much of it is subjective but all of that stuff is very well done imo.

In no particular order...: They've crafted some of the best games I've ever played for so many years (Baldur's Gate, NWN, KOTOR, Jade Empire, DA), including my all time favorites (Mass Effect 1-3). I mean I've replayed the trilogy literally a dozen times over. Even though I felt ME: Andromeda was fairly average and didn't live up to the trilogy, it's not something I hold against them. Montreal was a fresh new team and delivered a solid game. I'm also really enjoying Anthem despite all the issues. Fingers crossed they continue to add QoL improvements and new content soon.: I adore everything they do. The Witcher series will go down as some of the most fun experiences in the last decade for me. The Witcher III's a masterpiece (replayed 4 times including expansions) and Cyberpunk 2077 looks absolutely incredible. : Doesn't even need explaining lol. Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, The Last of Us...masterpieces.: Same as the above? Lol. GTA and RDR are some of the best experiences I've had in video gaming.: Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Tiberian Sun, C&C Generals...I miss them dearly. RTS giants in their day that I'll never forget.

It's a question that can be extrapolated to many games from last gen. I'm not sure why the original Mass Effect is singled out. There was no 'pass' given that I can see at least. It's sitting at a 91 MC, not some GTAV/LoZ tier 97-98. Reviewers clearly pointed out things like technical issues and some design problems. The narrative, world building and characters excellent in ME1, which is what propelled its status. The point is ME1 felt fresh in 2007, despite its issues. There's no way it'd be as well received today simply because it should be viewed as a product of its time. Since then, many studios have implemented conversation wheels, characters as squadmates, branching narrative, sprawling sci-fi worlds, etc. It wouldn't really stand out.

The combat is really damn fun. I went for the Colossus first and I’m just loving blowing fools up and flying never gets old. Guns feel punchy and that nuke...wew. Going for the Storm second. Story is fine so far, it’s pushing me along and I’m generally interested to see it through and where it goes. I’ve been taking my sweet time and reading up every single Cortex entry and some of them are pretty funny lol. And I guess it just depends on your tastes but Fort Tarsis feels like a cozy home to me. I’m really liking coming back after expeditions and seeing what’s new, chatting up all the characters. I’m genuinely connecting with most of them. Yarrow, Owen, Zoe, Prospero, Max the bartender, even that creeper Neeson Giles lol. Each with their own little stories. This part feels like BioWare to me. My only complaint about it would be that it *sounds* empty. It feels like a bazaar so I wish it’d be bustling with noise and convos going on, and throw in some nice background music while exploring... Loading times haven’t been too bad really, except for maybe launching a new mission, sometimes taking 20-30 seconds. But it generally doesn’t bother me, I’m fine just sitting and waiting lol. And I do wish we could set waypoint markers on the map. It’d help navigation so much. Had a few error disconnects here and there but nothing that’s got on my nerves yet. I tolerated it well enough in the first two games, but being so long in development and the third entry in the series, I was really hoping for some major QoL improvements to movement, aiming, shooting...

Depends on the person I guess, it does and it doesn't. I've met girls that don't care one bit about it, and others that have a preference for taller men. I'm about 6'2" and my wife is around 5'3, she very much likes the fact that I'm tall. Everyone's different.

Official accounts on Twitter said more than once it takes place decades before the game. There’s nothing confusing about the flight. The developers have been extremely transparent and answering people’s questions over the years. No one should have expected a “fly absolutely anywhere” scenario, that’s not realistic for this type of game. You also upgrade flight time over the course of the game, so it’s difficult to judge that aspect at this point in full. I prefer to be reasonable and see how that is after the fact. But yes, my assumption was fairly high ceilings given the environments, but that was later clarified through more information being given. It wasn’t confusing, just something you learn along the way. Same with jets not being indefinite (also unrealistic expectation). It IS open world in freeplay, even if you go through cave systems, tunnels etc.Phew, a maniacally cynical way to approach it, and. No, I don’t feel “fooled” or misled at all. There’s always things in game’s marketing that end up becoming clearer the more it’s shown. Clearer, not intentionally misled.

From my understanding, Frostbite has a lot to do with it, yeah. Streaming is a very difficult issue with it. The engine literally wasn’t designed from the outset to accommodate huge open worlds. BioWare built that into the engine along the way. As for flight duration, they actually did say they played around with having indefinite flight, but it made combat too easy and was difficult to nail down a satisfying combat loop. Understandable.

(which wouldn't really be all that bad, as long as leads below him/her are knowledgeable). What's wrong with that?I mean, yes, the game's in development. Part of the development process is figuring out what game you want to make lol.Rebooting isn't a bad thing in itself. Could be best for the project. Sadly, it's one of a select few games I stopped hours into and couldn't pick up again, so I resold it. I had too many issues. On the plus side, I thought the setting was very unique. You could feel the thick atmosphere when playing. But for some reason I felt the NPCs were a bore to chat with. Mostly bland personalities, very little emoting, and I'm not sure if this was just my version (PS4), but the camera would pop into weird angles when I'd initiate convos. Sometimes it'd show up randomly behind an NPC and not move, sometimes it'd show half of my face and half of the NPC's face and not move, sometimes it'd be zoomed into my face...like what the hell is going on? lol Movement and controls were fairly janky too and just detracted from my experience. I felt the combat was...okay. I used various moves all the time to spice it up but ultimately it wasn't an aspect of the game that excited me. A lack of fast travel and constant backtracking sealed the deal for me unfortunately.

There's still quite a number of veterans from the 90's there. Mark Darrah (exec producer on Anthem and DA) for one has been there since before Baldur's Gate shipped. In any case, I'm not sure what this points out anyway, the majority of people in a majority of decades-old studios around the world have not been there since their inception. Most change jobs, seek different opportunities all the time. This isn't something specific to BioWare. A ton of people currently have been there for 10+ years, making single player RPG games year after year. It's to have the desire to do something different creatively for a change.

Thread 3 years later, do you agree with MGSV's Critical Reception of 95 Metacritic?
No, and I didn’t think it deserved it then either in my opinion. There’s no doubt it’s great mechanically. Controls are buttery smooth, vehicles, weapons etc all feel great to use and infiltrating different bases and compounds is fun the first time around, but holy hell it got repetitive quick. Repeating the same exact missions twice or even three times in a row is ridiculous and much of the game felt padded out to me. The open world felt lifeless and I felt the game didn’t hit the high mark of a ‘Metal Gear Solid’ game because of it, it suffered from that. Throw in a plot that much of which is told through audio tapes and a mostly silent protagonist in cutscenes (of which there were few and a big part of my love for previous games), I grew bored pretty quick. Did not like the drastic departure from the bombastic cinematography and more linear, focused structure of MGS1-4.

Let's see: Honorable Mentions: There's so many others I'm excited for next year that narrowing down to 10 was difficult enough. Had to give a shout out to more: -: Been a fan of Remedy's since the first Max Payne. Control looks to continue their legacy of building worlds with interesting settings, lore, plot direction and gameplay. I want to learn more about what exactly's going on in that damn building. I'm just happy to see more games from the studio. -Machinegames has been pretty quiet on this front since E3, but my hype's still there. Loved The New Order, The Old Blood and New Colossus. BJ's a m'fin badass, and the chance to play as twin daughters? Oh hell yes. Time to die again Nazis. -Yeah, we haven't even seen the game at all, but Respawn's proven to me that they're a super talented developer and I'm so excited to see their take on Star Wars, especially with Stig Asmussen at the helm. -: How long has it been now? I just want to play the damn thing! I'm happy they're taking their time to get it to as high a quality as possible of course. I wasn't a fan of 2, but the original game was super addictive. I'll hunt for green orbs again, yep. -: I skipped Let's Go this year because from all impressions and footage, it's not really what I want out of the series, and I'm ok with that too. There's more than enough room for all types of players, but I'm excited for the next 'core' game in the series. I haven't played a Pokemon RPG since the first Black & White games, so I'm ready to dive back in. Of course, much of this would look very different if games like TLOU II, Ghost of Tsushima and Death Stranding were 'officially' announced for next year, but alas, rules are rules and all :)

It’s a strange sentiment for sure. Citing past accolades as being the original creators of the beloved Fallout and the developers of fan favorite New Vegas when revealing your brand new RPG is exactly what I would do as a marketer. I highly doubt it’s intended as some kind of ding, it’s just great marketing.

Thread Do you feel the TGAs delivered with the new game announcements/content/game trailer premiers?
Absolutely. I think expecting something on the caliber of E3 is really misguided. The Pathless from Giant Squid, Hades from Supergiant, MK11, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Far Cry: New Dawn, CTR, Anthem continues to look awesome, new Dragon Age, The Outer Worlds looks phenomenal, new DMC5 footage, a bunch of super well done live music performances. It felt like a fun celebration of games and a fun way to round out the year.

I'm sure the idea ran through the team's heads, but with a budget already set and the scope of the game as it is already, adding in a whole new system of ship flying and ship combat, QA'ing that and making it feel right likely would have been a nightmare in itself and taken a long ass time. It still looks great!

Thread David Jaffe- AAA games are dying (creatively speaking)
Eh, I don’t foresee a time where high budget games become extinct. The method of their delivery might change over time but they’ll always be here in some form. Video title’s misleading in itself too. Should probably be something more along the lines of “AAA creativity is dying”. Saying Uncharted 1 and 4 are the “exact same game” made me roll my eyes hard though. They share 90% of the systems, but that 10% difference in production values, plot, setpieces, level design, mobility, etc are the selling point...obviously. I don’t see anything wrong with that. Most games nowadays are iterations of ones that came before.

Thread Microsoft Studios |OT3| I thought they were supposed to be sold off by now
To be fair, that number doesn’t constitute full time employees from start to finish. That number is every person who had a hand in any of the tiniest details of the game over the course of its development, internal or external. And there was an ass ton of consultants and external contract workers who had a hand. Could be anything from texturing a tree to a piece of clothes. Still a crazy number nonetheless.

Thread Microsoft Studios |OT3| I thought they were supposed to be sold off by now
Given the studio itself is still being structured and prepped for next gen, it's really hard to gauge just exactly what Microsoft is going for. Publishers mean different things when they categorize games as "AAA" or "AAAA" as Microsoft's pushing with The Initiative (something I haven't really heard of before lol). Most of the time, it's referring to budget. Therefore I'm assuming that's what Microsoft is referring to. It's impossible to really know what game they're targeting, but if I had to guess from the location of the studio itself to the talent they've been poaching, I'm inclined to think they want to try and tackle a game similar to what we've seen from Naughty Dog or Sony Santa Monica. Cinematic, narrative driven, super high production values...it may likely have multiplayer, who knows. No inside info from me, just speaking in hunches :P

Thread The Game Awards 2018 - All Nominees Revealed
I think every game on here is worthy of being ‘game of the year’. I mean ultimately everybody weighs different aspects of games differently. Santa Monica definitely took a big risk with how much they changed up God of War. It’s commendable, and I had an incredible time with it. Red Dead Redemption 2 took me to so many places consciously and emotionall throughout the 60+ hours I put into it that I wasn’t expecting. The breadth of its world blew me away. I don’t really just look at the mechanics of a game or visuals, but the impressions they leave me after I finish them. This is too hard lol.

I'm a bit lucky in that I live in a fairly blue area of Florida (Orlando), lots of progressive college age people but honestly, the fact that so many in my state support Trumpism and racist senior citizens continue to age and come retire here is tiresome. Having some successes doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not shrinking. I don’t think the same audience is there as it was in the 90’s or early 2000’s. There are failures in every genre, but the sales numbers for each speaks to each one’s popularity respectively.

I'm honestly not really a big Blizzard fan as I haven't played too many of their games but haven't they still put out core titles for their fanbase? Overwatch just came out a couple years ago, they're overhauling Warcraft 3, and we know they're deep into the next mainline Diablo. There's just opportunity to seize revenue from mobile. I agree if it were up to me, I'd always couple announcements seen as targeting 'casual' audiences along with something for the core base. I think they believed Warcraft 3: Reforged would do just that. It's mostly down to a timing thing.

Arthur dying from TB was...such a surprise I did not see coming. It was refreshing and emotional in so many ways...a disease he brought on himself from beating a man who owed them money half to death. Sinister...and poetic all in one. We know who survives into RDR so I knew something would happen to Arthur, but I did think for a minute that R* would subvert the “outlaw dies” expectations and maybe have him finally be free at the end and settling down with Mary. They were such a cute couple...goddamnit. Poor Arthur. Redemption indeed.

Thread Games You Have Beaten Despite Finding Them Average At Best?
Not too many honestly. I tend to stop playing if I'm not having a good time. Some notable exceptions would be: -: I was actually barely enjoying my time with this one sadly. Clunky controls and combat, really weird design decisions, convoluted story and characters I just didn't care for one bit. -: I actually only played through to the "first" ending apparently, which was enough for me. Great combat but the world was so drab and boring to me. -: Fantastic visuals but the gunplay itself didn't feel good and some of the levels got my blood boiling lol. Overall it was alright. -: The original trilogy stands as one of the best experiences I've had in games. While I enjoyed my overall time, the characters weren't as strong as the trilogy, the plot wasn't as intense and there was a lot of bloat in the end.
