Thread EU to rule on Microsoft's $7.5 billion ZeniMax deal by March 5
You'd have to imagine that any blogpost/press release is surely going to be pretty light on actual content. I don't think people should get their hopes up for some revelatory announcement or anything. It's basically the same news as last time but now, we presume, it's official. I don't see them using the opportunity to, for example, announce a bunch of games or say 'SUCK IT, NERDS, ELDER SCROLLS EXCLUSIVE FOREVERRR'.

Thread Could The New Sony VASG Studio Title Be Working on The Order: 1886 sequel
lol no. You make a compelling case but I feel like “the next chapter in cinematic storytelling” is just buzzwords that could apply to virtually any game. Same with them looking for an artist " to create photorealistic 3D characters with highly realistic textures such as worn fabric and accessories". What game (with characters) does that apply too? We're never seeing The Order again. About 70 people have a strong desire to see it return with a reboot and everyone else in the world forgot what it was when RaD moved on to better things. Still, prove me wrong Sony. If they can return to that IP with a brand new team and make something undeniably good from it then I'll tip my hat to them. I'm sticking with 'feels like a stretch' though.

Thread "Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy" Leaked on Microsoft Store
Because they'll buy it when this bundle is on sale for £20 or whatever and it seems like a crazy deal to get all three games and their DLC. Whatever it's priced at, it'll be priced so that it looks attractive when the bundle goes into a deep sale. Those games aren't individually priced at that (just by a quick look, Rise of the Tomb Raider is £25 normally on it's own) so any argument that they're cheap when in a sale will apply to this bundle too. Or, as you said, anyone can just buy the games and the DLC seperately if they want. It'll be the same result. It's just chucking them together in the one cart for you. A bundle is just more eye catching when a sale comes around for people who don't know which TR game they should be buying, what order they're in or if they need x, y or z DLC for each game. It's just putting it all under one bundle.

Thread "Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy" Leaked on Microsoft Store
It's just the existing Xbox One games bundled together. It's not a new SKU. I would guess that MS enabling FPS Boost for these old games has every chance of happening, but I wouldn't tie that to Square offering a new bundle of them on the store. Those enhancements would come from the Xbox side, not from Square. By all accounts this is just a bundle of the individual Xbox One titles with the DLC bundled in. No remastering or anything. As far as Auto HDR goes, Tomb Raider DE already supports Auto HDR. Rise and Shadow support proper HDR. So nothing to do there.

It’s definitely this. You can see what the bundle includes on the store page (‘In this bundle’) and it’s just the three existing games and the various DLCs). It isn’t new versions. It’s just a bog standard bundle, same as that Arkane Collection.

Thread Which Games Would You Like Freed from their outdated platforms?
Sega Rally Championship. Seriously, I could (and do!) play this constantly. It’s annoying that it’s stuck on Saturn (or a PC version that, by all accounts, you can mod pretty well) though. I emulate my JP copy on my Series X so I can actually play it on a modern system but I’d kill for Sega to give it some love and re-release it, cleaned up. I assume the licenses make it hard.

Thread Will Gamepass be on Playstation 5 sometime during this generation?
The way you max out revenue from a subscriber service is maxing out your customers who subscribe to it. Microsoft would absolutely put Game Pass on PS5 (and Switch) if they could. You can apply some comedy pantomime villain malicious intent to them if you enjoy the drama but the reality is their entire business has shifted to a service model (front and centre) which simply requires more subs. It doesn’t matter where those subs come from. From consoles, from PC, from mobile users etc. And, yeah, from PlayStation users. It’d be ginormous for Game Pass. It won’t happen because Sony wouldn’t do it, not because Microsoft wouldn’t be willing because they want to ‘suffocate and eliminate PlayStation’.

Thread German Bundestag passes new Youth Protection Act (lootboxes will lead to an age rating of 18)
Excellent. Without wanting to be a broken record - this is how this shit should be handled. Without arguing back and forth about how it should be considered gambling (which just means nothing happens because it's really easy to just say 'no, it doesn't meet the terminology of gambling'. Tieing this argument to 'literally gambling so treat it the same' for so long has constantly been a dead end for this conversation. It's too easily redutable. The only way lootbox/surprise mechanic (lol) restrictions get taken seriously is to move away from that mindset and treat them as their own evil that is exploiting kids and concentrate on that rather than whether we should be extended what our current gambling laws allow or not.

Thread Red Dead 2 : Would Story DLC/Expansions have been more successful than Red Dead Online?
RDO easily. It's fine to prefer single player content but there's zero argument that RDO makes them more revenue than a single $30 DLC here. And they presumably have the numbers from releasing single player content for GTAIV and RDR1 and the face that they're only doing online stuff for GTAV and RDR2 speaks volumes. To put this in to context, each Role in RDR2 costs around $15 (presuming you aren't subsidising it with Gold you've earned through playing) and there are five of them at this point. They also have a Battle Pass running every few months which also costs around $15 and they're on their fifth one of those at the moment. If you've bought all of the roles (which seems pretty normal for RDO2 players. They're the meat of the content now) and bought into each Battle Pass then, ignoring any Gold that you've earned/got back from the Outlaw Pass, that's about $150 spent already. And there'll be a new Player Role and a new Battle Pass along soon. There's constantly something to spend your money on. And not in a terrible way - the game has new content arriving fairly regularly (actually not as regularly as a lot of players would like) because it's a live game and players like it. Not to mention the regular stuff that costs Gold (ie real money) like cosmetics, new horse stuff, weapons, emotes etc. RDO2 is a cash cow.

Here's your patch notes. Looks like it's unlocked the framerate on PS4 (maybe a toggle?) so that PS5 users can use that and also recieved a resolution/details enhancement for Series X folk. Game already ran at 60fps on Xbox. I think both versions (even Pro/One X) were 1080p before this patch.

Depends on the system. For consoles, I always play on my big TV. For my PC, I play at a desk with M&KB. I spent a lot of years with the PC plugged in to my TV and it was largely fine but, ultimately, I realised that a lot of games I play on PC were more comfy when sat at a desk with my keyboard (and mouse and flightstick etc)

Totally anecdotal but, in my experience, the younger folks I know are far more progressive and don’t give a shit about sexuality, gender or anything. They’re, by and large, accepting and growing up surrounded by conversation of these topics being more and more the norm. It’s your 30 years and up, adults, who’ve grown up without these conversations that are the intolerant, quick to be an asshole types. Totally anecdotal and there GGer kids of course. Just have to remember that all of this stuff was kicking off ten years or so ago so those ‘kids’ from back then are probably late twenties/early thirties now and still angry shits.

Thread Xbox/Microsoft has made some amazing strides recently, BUT I would really like some new achievement features!!!
I’ve thought about this before and I’m fairly 50/50 on it. I think it’s usage depends on the game. For example, Smite, a game that’s been going since 2015 on Xbox and now has upwards of 4,500 achievement points available... The original 1000 points are basically meaningless in 2021. Completing that set and getting a special completion award means nothing. You haven’t completed anything. It’s had six years of updates and content since then and all of it is as important. Same with something like Sea of Thieves. The original 1000/1000 gamerscore doesn’t include things like the Tall Tales, which I think most people would agree are a pretty core part of the game now. The original 1000 points includes inane things like selling x hundred amount of fruit crates which is a meaningless stat in 2021. The things they’ve added and concentrated on since are more relevant to ‘completing’ the games’ challenges but wouldn’t be included. I think I’d lean towards either having an award for getting every achievement (like, every one, not just the initial 1000 - this would obviously have to be able to be lost if more get added) or none.

I like collecting Platinums but I do think there are drawbacks. Check out the Destruction Allstars subreddit/OT and see what percentage of posts are around the frustration of the Platinum being too hard/frustrating to get. Nobody gives a shit if they get 750 or 1000 gamerscore. You don’t see the same drive to ‘go for plat’ in every game. Which has its pluses and minuses id say. I feel like a lot of games have switched to a ‘getting the platinum is fairly straightforward’ because they’ve realised that people feel happy when they get it and makes them feel good about the game.

All I know is that if there was a platinum available for Sea of Thieves right now i (and a lot of community) would be going insane trying to grind to it where, as it is right now, I don’t care that my achievement score is an uneven *checks achievements* 2,115 out of 2,790 I might prefer the latter way and being more zen about not ‘completing the core content’ for a shiny badge.

All three of these are fantastic. Picking a winner seems totally arbitrary. Diddy Kong has the best campaign/single player. Mario Kart definitely has the best multiplayer (4 player, battle mode etc). Crash was the only non-Nintendo platform kart racer that even shone a light to Mario Kart in the 90s.

It's a first party game. It's owned by and published by Nintendo. It's a Nintendo game. Doesn't matter that it wasn't developed by a company that Nintendo doesn't own. It's been commisioned for Nintendo and been released by Nintendo. It's a Nintendo game. Some of the biggest first party games out there were made by third party devs (Pokemon, Marvel's Spider-man, Smash Bros etc). Second party isn't a thing. It's a made-up term by gamers to describe the situation where a third party dev makes a first party game.

The biggest surprise to me is how fast the Quest 2 has overtaken the Quest 1! Just less supply constrained? I feel like there’s a lot more about at retail. Similar story here actually. I actually got an N64 first, near release and have forever had a mildly obsessive nostalgia with it's library. I love it. By the time the gen was over I had essentially fully transitioned to playing on PlayStation though (I got a pre-owned one pretty late in it's life) and I'd say that the PS1 actually has my favourite game library of any console. I'm filled with nostalgia for the N64 and the magazines around that time and everything. But the PS1 is king in terms of library. Easily.

You're totally right. I started typing out a rant about realistic/sim racers and accidentally bundled all racers in there with it. I really meant the state of competition to things like Gran Turismo and even Saturn things like Sega Rally and Manx TT. More realistic, 'adult' racers (for want of a better term). We did get a Wipeout and a Ridge Racer but all too late. And you're right about F1 games. Just always felt like, in a world where Gran Turismo and Colin McRae were racing games of the moment, N64 players were left with (still good) cartoony looking things like Snowboard Kids, Mario Kart and F-Zero and then a whole bunch of really average realstic games like MRC and Top Gear Rally.

Thread It is disappointing that the N64 had so little RPG's.
I agree to a point but Nintendo themselves were still developing 2D games like Yoshi's Story, publishing sprite based games like Killer Instict Gold and other devs were making things like Mischief Makers and Ogre Battle 64. Not every game had to be some big, 3D showcase. I think the latter point (the lack of Japanese support) was the bigger issue.

Thread It is disappointing that the N64 had so little RPG's.
I think it's easy to say that JRPGs instantly transitioned to FMV and CD filling audio etc but, equally, the PlayStation and Saturn were still knocking out JRPGs that looked essentially like this and there's no reason the N64 couldn't have squeezed something the scope of previous cartridge based JRPGs (like FF6 or DQV) onto a cartridge... We didn't need FF8 FMV cutscenes or CGI backgrounds with CD audio...

Thread It is disappointing that the N64 had so little RPG's.
If the Resident Evil 2 port could work, I'm a believer in anything! :D I do agree though that the larger issue, realistically, was asking JRPG devs to make all of those compromises when the PlayStation and Saturn were sitting over there with CD support and an ingrained, existing JRPG audience. My main point is just not necessarily agreeing that cartridge=no JRPGs just because FF7 did big FMVs (to be a little reductive). Would've loved to have seen a continuation of the 16 bit JRPG (that flurished on cartridges) continue on the N64. Felt weird to just see JRPGs die on a Nintendo platform. I reckon we could've theoretically, in my ideal world, seen more 2D based JRPGs on the N64 but, realistically, the development process probably meant a ton of compromises and all to try and release a game on a platform that wasn't really setting the charts on fire and had no proven record of JRPG buyers. I know which way I would've gone if I had to sign off the development of a game in that era. Sucks in terms of the N64 library but it is what it is.

Thread It is disappointing that the N64 had so little RPG's.
I'm a big N64 nerd but it's biggest weakness was it's glaring omissions in certain genres. It was the king console if you wanted platformers or shooters but... JRPGs? Fighting games? Racing games? As you said, in terms of JRPGs it had shit like Holy Magic Century at best. For fighting games it's best efforts were things like Killer Intinct Gold (a port of Killer Instinct 2), Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Rakuga Kids realistically. Meanwhile, the Saturn and PlayStation were getting things like Street Fighter Alpha 3, Marvel Super Heroes, Virtua Fighter, Tekken 3 etc... For fighting games, I essentially went to wrestling games where, thankfully, the N64 shone. Racing games were a real mixed bag. It obviously had it won with kart racers (Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing and Rare's Mickey's Speedway USA) but really nothing to rival the likes of Gran Turismo, Sega Rally, Daytona USA and Colin McRae that were showing up on other platforms. We had GT64, Top Gear Rally, MRC... basically very little. In retrospect, Ridge Racer 64 is a really good RR game but it pailed in comparison to R4 that came out around the same time. It was basically an expansion of Ridge Racer Revolution.

I actually think it's this knowing Housemarque's catalogue of smaller games. It's not like the devs are known for creating big AAA games. Thread GIBiz: Returnal, Skyward Sword, Ratchet & Clank and the value of video games
The perception of value is different for everyone. $60 for a new Switch Zelda game if you've never played it before? Probably fine. Let's remember this is a remaster of a game from two consoles ago. It's a ten year old game. A lot of Switch gamers won't have played it. We will have adults on this forum who were literally 8 years old when Skyward Sword came out. If you've played through SS four times already on your Wii? Probably not worth it. For both examples, it surely just comes down to how much you want the game. Trying to pin value based on effort or how many developers worked on the game or whatever is pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things. And let's remember that that $10 difference isn't universal. In the UK, it's a £20 price difference. SSHD is £49.99 here (as opposed to $59.99) and Returnal is £69.99 (same as the USD $69.99). A £20 difference is fairly large.

Square made some of my favourite games ever on PS1 but, I think for variety alone, Rare's N64 run has to take this. Look at that list... arguably the best shooter, the best platformer, the best kart racer and the best fighting game on the platform. And then crazy games like Blast Corps and Jet Force Gemini. Rare were on fire for the period. The N64 would've been dead without their games.

Thread IF Sony releases PS exclusives on PC frequently like one every 3 months, do you guys think..
I don’t really know if this is the case. I think (most) PC gamers who waited and picked something like Horizon ZD up on PC will just happily wait and eventually pick up Horizon FW on PC too. I can’t see it pulling folk towards buying a console if they weren’t already interested. And if they were already into console gaming and games like Horizon/Days Gone etc, they’ve probably already got a PlayStation. My two cents. I think the releases are, simply, so that Sony can sell more copies of their games. I don’t personally think they’re intended as advertisements or as a hook to drag people to PlayStation 5.

Thread GIBiz: Returnal, Skyward Sword, Ratchet & Clank and the value of video games
I think pricing and being ok the x, y or z price is so subjective that it's a difficult conversation to be had. Some will scoff at the idea of paying £70 for a new game. Some will happily throw £150 at a collectors edition. Some will say 'they were crazy to ever think about selling Destruction Allstars for $70!' but then I look at my play stats and I've already played it for more hours than I played Demon's Souls (and I finished it). So why shouldn't it cost the same? Some will say £50 is too much for one Nintendo game but happily pay it for another. We all have different barriers and lines that we won't cross and, importantly, different amounts of disposable income. I think, for me, I'm not outraged by the prices publishers charge for their games. It's their product, go mad. Charge what you want. It's a toy. But the market will decide if it's worth that. Nintendo have proven, as the article says, that their games (hell, even their basic remasters) will sell millions upon millions at a full $60. They don't need to drop the price. They don't need to watch the market and do deep sales every six months. Because people buy them. That's, for the market, what those games are worth. I guess I question whether the £70 price range will have an effect for certain games. A negative effect. I've spoken before about seeing Godfall show up in a PSN sale at a pretty deep discount of an advertised 43% off and when that still comes through at £40... woof. That essentially still feels full price to me. It's close enough to all the other £49.99 games that it might as well be. I feel like the hardcore will still buy games new regardless. Ratchet fans will buy Ratchet whether it's £60 or £70. But it's that secondary market that pick the games up reduced a few months later and gives games a little second wind that might suffer. AA tier games often get a really decent boost in interest when they get their first deep price drop. People who weren't sold at first take a second look. But when that deep discount for a Sony game only brings it down to around or under what other publishers are charging for their games day one anyway? It's a hard sell for the sales crowd. I think that's where we'll see the casualties.

Thread Xbox Game Studios & Bethesda |OTXIII| Todd Howard & The Temple of Doom
As a somewhat obsessive VR fan (I have three headsets so far, and counting...) I'd obviously be excited to see what MS first party could do with VR (would die to see some Rare/Sea of Thieves experience) but equally... I don't think it's a gap in the market that they need to be part of. The massive daddy in VR at the moment in the Oculus Quest. A standalone, wireless headset that doesn't need to be plugged into anything else. You don't need an Xbox (or a PC or a PlayStation) to experience top class VR anymore. It probably makes less sense than it ever has done to chase that market as a console maker. If I was recommending VR to someone new to the hardware I 100% would be recommending they get a Quest and not buying more hardware than they need (in terms of also needing a games console or a PC or whatever).

Thread The Medium |OT| Dual Sensed
I'm not the mod who locked that thread but I thought it was best if someone dived in and gave some context. This discussion point is clearly an incredibly sensitive one. We've had threads like this before for countless games but we'd usually ask (and I think this makes sense?) that a thread around subject matter like this be made either by someone who has played the game first-hand and is giving their personal opinion on it or, failing that, be based on a written feature/article by a reputable source. With all the respect in the world to OP, it's really tough to have this kind of thread around such a sensitive and emotive subject matter when a third of the thread is complaining that the OP hasn't actually played the game and another third is complaining that the tweets the thread is based upon didn't finish it or see some important context or whatever. Our report queue completely blew up in an instant and it was deemed that a thread based on second hand impressions from a fairly small Twitter account wasn't really sufficiant reason to host a thread that was already a battleground and receiving really serious reports. I know that lock messages can sometimes seem a bit short and not very descriptive so I apologise for that. The issue isn't being silenced or anything. It's actually already happened in the review threads and this OT from what I can remember (I haven't even played the game beyond the first bit, but I remember the points being raised in one of these threads before). If someone has some personal opinion from their own experience of playing the game that they want to kick off a discussion about then that would maybe be a better place to form the conversation from. It'll at the very least stop them from being criticised for not having played the game for the entire thread.

Every time I open up my PS5 PSN store to see what’s new, I pray to Cerny that they supported BC. Not that it’s not (more of a) thing on the Xbox side, but the PSN store offering you a split, at its most basic level, of ‘PS5’ and ‘PS4’ storefronts (rather than just as overall ‘what’s new’ for example) really hammers it home if you just regularly open the PS5 section.

While we do get these conversations every gen, I think the emergence of the Pro and One X definitely did a number on the leap that everyone expected day one. If you were coming from an OG Xbox One or an OG PS4 you’d have a phenomenal leap, even with crossgen titles. If you’ve spent the last three years already playing games at 4K on a One X then the step is undoubtedly smaller.

Thread State Of Decay 2 dev apologises for confusion surrounding the game's Nazi-punching trait
So this story kinda blew up this week and the devs finally responded yesterday and it's made for a kind of fascinating tweet thread of how this whole thing happened and how they've fixed it. You can read the gist of the story (and it's resolution) at the link below but I'll summarise it too. Skip to the bottom for the TL;DR. So State of Decay 2 has traits that each procedurally generated charcter in the game is given. Some are positive, some are negative. There are . Like, 1,300 different traits a lot. You can have the trait, which means you have a bonus to shooting. You can have the trait that means you have lower health (because allergies I guess) but you have a bonus to cooking (because you're character has had to learn to cook for themselves throughout their life). Or the trait, which is definitely the one I actually have. So, while live-tweeting a playthrough of the game, game developer James Seow came across a character with the trait trait which the game was translating as giving his character a because they were 'Irritable towards other people'. Hmmmm. James tweeted his disbelief at Nazi Punching being included in the game as a negative trait and by the studio's Twitter account. You can see how this started to snowball. So, yes, Undead Labs finally got back to James about the trait, about the ban and how it all happened and here's their side... First, James was apparently banned by their Twitter account due to an auto-ban listening software that they had installed to filter out 'offensive terms and inflammatory launguage aimed at the channel', which was presumably triggering. Secondly, they went into the whole situation about how this trait being viewed as negative happened and also talked about how they're hotfixing it, making Nazi punching forever a positive trait, which it obviously should definitely be. You can read the full Tweet thread below (i'm not going to embed it all). and I've cut out a section of their article to summarise the reasons and the hotfix.

Epic exclusivity deal (a rumoured $10.5 million) PlayStation marketing deal/exclusive DLC PS Now deal Game Pass deal PS+ deal They absolutely rinsed every avenue of 'how can we monetise this game beyond just sales'. Obviously a Sony first party game like Returnal isn't cutting deals with Game Pass or Epic (well, probably not) or getting money back - from themselves - for putting the game on PS Now or PS+. If Control did will and made good money, I'd hazard a guess that it was a decent mixture of sales and being helped by the amount of money they took from virtually everyone giving it for exclusivity and subscription deals.

Thread EUROGAMER | Is Xbox Game Pass too good to be true?
I would (softly!) dispute this. Artists didn't pivot to make more money from concerts. They were already maxing revenue from touring. It's always been a massive money maker. They might say 'we make most of our income from touring now' but that's because money from records vastly dropped, not because money from touring suddenly went up. Spotify was a reaction to disappearing record sales because of piracy. It actually increased revenue from recorded music in a time where that was fast disappearing. Record companies suddenly had a new avenue to monetise catalogue and, as such, deals for artists started getting back to better place as streaming royalties could be factored in. Spotify didn't suddenly make artists earn less. There are (legitimate) grumblings with royalties paid via streaming but it shouldn't really be confused with blaming Spotify for recorded music selling less. Pandora's Box was already well open and Spotify, if anything, was a band-aid that offered at least income from fans wanting all of the music for free.

Thread Racing game enthusiasts, what is your favorite steering wheel?
Do not try to use a video game to learn to drive. No matter how good you think your wheel and shifter are, they are not remotely similar to driving a car. I say this as someone who drives far too much and also loves my steering wheel setup on my PC. It’ll set you back, give you bad habits and won’t ultimately help you. I’m sorry to be a downer! But playing Gran Turismo or whatever with a wheel and then trying to translate that to real driving is a real no-no. You need lessons and hours in a real car, doing boring things like checking your mirrors until it’s second nature, doing hill starts, reversing into spaces, and just hours behind a wheel getting used to the of a car on the road. So much of driving is learning how it feels, physically, when things are happening (when you need to shift, brake, use your clutch etc). Learning how to use a gaming wheel or use a shifter or whatever is like 0.3% of learning to drive. To give an obvious example, something like the instructional lessons in GT/Project Cars will teach you how to take a hairpin corner at 65mph and exit it with the most effective acceleration. Something you don’t need to know. It won’t teach you how to emergency stop when doing 30mph or how to smoothly gear down when coming to a stop at some traffic lights.

That’s, mentally, around full price to me. But that is a game with a 43% discount four months after release. The kinda time I’d normally dive into a game that I wasn’t desperate enough to grab at full price. But I dunno... £40 still feels like a lot. I feel like the result is me buying less of those games. Those AA or lower end reviewed games that don’t have a massive wide reach will be the casualties. And it just highlights to me how many games shouldn’t launch at £70/€80.

Man, I'm so nostalgic for this. Seeing Conker 64 in magazine back then. Conker fact - if you drive anywhere near where Rare is actually situated (in Twycross, UK), you'll see roadsigns for Conkers adventure park (an outdoor adventure playground thing for families). Always wondered if it was coincidence. It's literally 10 miles away from Rare's front door.

Easily Mortal Kombat. And I say that as a ginormous Street Fighter fan who has literally played every entry and owns fuck knows how many copies of each game. Street Fighter could get it back, I'm sure. I just think they went the wrong route with Street Fighter V and have spent an entire generation trying to elevate that game rather than cutting loose and trying again. It's a FGC community game and none of the mainstream/folk who'd have nostalgia for Street Fighter care that it exists. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat release three(?) games last generation that all got a significant amount of interest from the wider/mainstream crowd being loved by actual gamers tm. Basically, Scorpion has never been cooler/more well known. Meanwhile, Street Fighter V has this... ...went exclusive to one console (no Switch or Xbox release), launched without an arcade mode and in a with broken online and just comtinued to push outfits and premium stages for like five years. Should've cut the game loose and worked on a proper Street Fighter VI by now. Sucks but it's true.

Thread Could Obsidian Entertainment be working on a new Conker game?
I actually think a Conker in 2021 could totally work. I think folks who concentrate on the adult humour and the shock value are missing the forest for the trees. What Conker actually did was poke fun at gaming conventions of it’s era. It took the cutesy kid friendly platform genre (that was overdone to a huge extent - especially on the N64) and turn the mascot into a drunk. It played with and made fun of gaming ‘things’ like context sensitive buttons etc and made jokes out of them. A game that poked fun at modern gaming conventions could totally work. You don’t need the South Park shock humour in 2021. You don’t need to make a cute mascot swear. What you need to do is poke at GAAS games. Have a stage where you have to clear outposts, use detective vision, tag enemies and then sneak up behind them and press triangle to stealth attack them. Have a Battle Royale stage that’s full of fake mtx, loot boxes and comedy cosmetic unlocks. Poke fun at sad dad games. At walking simulators. At hero shooters. Christ, take the piss out of how broken games like MCC are when they launch. I could see it being done by the right people.

You can do Game Pass and Live a couple of ways. They are seperate subs (like PS+ and PS Now) - you might technically be able to do it cheapest by finding a cheap Xbox Live Gold sub and then just subbing to Game Pass seperately - the easier way would just be to sub to Game Pass Ultimate, which includes Game Pass, Game Pass for PC, Xbox Live Gold and EA Play (so you'll have a vault of EA games to download and play too) I'd probably just recommend grabbing a Game Pass Ultimate sub and not overthinking it. You can drive yourself mad trying to find deals for everything. Download Ori and the Will of the Wisps and Forza Horizon 4 straight away and have a great time. Other games to consider: - Doom Eternal - Outer Wilds - Dragon Quest XI - Streets of Rage 4 - Banjo Kazooie - Tell Me Why - Perfect Dark

It's gonna be playing most games at around 1080p. So similar or, usually, higher resolution than your Switch. If you're fine with that then you'll have no issues there. It's a proper next gen console, just aiming for a lower resolution. If your PS5 is running a game at 4k (or around that) then your Series S will probably be running it at 1080p.

From reading the actual quote it sounds like the team just need to be constantly creating and looking forward to the next 2, 3 or 4 content drops (because that’s what you have to do with a live game) and they just don’t have the ability to put all of that on hold to make new ports of the game for new consoles right now without fucking up their roadmaps. I’m not sure why people are talking about XBLG requirements and stumbling blocks with forced crossplay or whatever. Yoshida literally says ‘there are no obstacles to creating the Xbox version. That 18€ 4 screen plan is also for 4k, right? The 12€ plan is the normal, HD 2 screen deal (that presumably most people sub to). I see that as the different between Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate maybe. Netflix adding a new tier (UHD) for a small extra charge (like Game Pass Ultimate offering Gold and Game Pass for PC at a small increased charge) rather than them creeping the price up for everyone. They definitely have crept the price up in the past but it's been super slow. I remember them getting a load of backlash once and reverting it. We had (a very informal) poll here a little while ago and, even here where we're all enthusiasts who know about these offers, only 16% of people said they paid $1 deals only. The same percentage paid the full monthly price, double that bought multi-month deals (3 month or 6 month gift cards) and the biggest percentage - 40% - had converted XBL with the $1 deal (so they'd paid about $180 for three years of Game Pass Ultimate). Which works out at about half price over three years. I think the 'only paying $1 for one month/three months' folk often get bundled in with the converting XBLG for $1 folk (who have had to buy three years of XBLG to do it so are still giving Xbox $180 to do it - just in one bulk go). Personally speaking, I was a 'converted my XBLG' voter but, as of this month actually, that's expired and I'm on the 'paying full price monthly' train (other than a couple of free 7 day cards I got with some Pringles last week). I can't be bothered to keep chasing deals and cancelling and resubbing to get $1 deals. I just let the sub roll. I could do similar deals with Netflix and WWE Network and Disney+ etc if I shopped around but, to be honest, the price is already so low that it's not worth my time. You can get obsessed with trying to get deals on everything all of the time... I'm not sweating like £3 a week coming out of my bank account for Game Pass Ultimate as a full price subscriber.

I know that 'take it back to the retailer' is the correct answer but, if I was OP, I'd be trying the Sony route at the moment too. Firstly, the UK is still in the middle of a nationwide lockdown and all stores are closed. Game are literally shutters down, haven't been open since Christmas. They have online channels but it's not as easy as strolling into a store and speaking to a human. Game online support aren't the greatest. Secondly, Game don't have any more PS5s. I don't know if it's the right assumption, but I'd hazard a guess that I'd be sorted out by Sony better than I would a highstreet shitty game store that has thousands of backlogged orders. I'm sorry OP. But send it back again! Demand to speak to someone higher up if you can!

I'm actually most excited (and hopeful) for 360 games support in the future. They mention in the DF vid that they were told that it's possible. The One obviously got the One X so a lot of (later) games already had enhanced modes and high framerate support. The 360 absolutely did not have that luxury and a lot of great titles are stuck at 30fps. Could be amazing!Yeah, on both Series X and S. 4k/120 on Series X and 1080p/120 (up from 1080/30!) on Series S I believe.

I believe pubs/devs are paid a chunk when they sign the deal. It's not a Spotify-like model of 'x amount per play'. This feels better to me as it doesn't incentivise devs to make games to get some arbitrary number of hours played per week to keep the lights on. Game Pass just needs variety of games - doesn't matter if some are shorter one-and-done like Outer Wilds or Spiritfarer and some are big single player stuff like Yakuza and Hellblade and some are service games like Destiny and Flight Sim. All will work out their own 'we want x amount of dollars to add our game to Game Pass' which all helps keep them out of the red earlier.

They all (PS5, XSX and XSS) have a box ticked that says ‘improved framerate (vs last gen) so I’m assuming all modes are targeting 60fps. At a guess, PS5 has a proper, locked 60fps mode with no hint of drops but at checkerboarded 4K. Also seems to have a native 4K mode that is probably “60fps”. Like we saw with Yakuza Like a Dragon. It’s 1440p mode is completely 60fps outside of tiny drops during summons (when you’re watching a cutscene, it beyond doesn’t matter). However, it still offers a 1080p mode that is 100% locked all of the time. Series X only has the native 4K by the looks of it. Remains to be seen how that performs.

I think rather than a full reboot I expected a re-branding at the least. Like when No Man's Sky released 'No Man's Sky Beyond' or when Sea of Thieves rebranded the SKU that you buy as 'Sea of Thieves Anniversary Edition' when they pushed a massive update and it got new eyes on it and got rereviewed etc. Or when Street Fighter V rebranded to SFV Arcade Edition and they stuck new boxart on it and stuff. Basically rebranding it and giving the impression that the game has had a little relaunch/had some work done to it. It's basically PR but it seems increasingly common. Just expected that the next gen launch would be an obvious time to do that. This all seems like they're just advertising a 60fps patch for Marvel's Avengers (I realise, in reality, it is more than that).

They do actually raise that at the end of the DF video! The big difference being that those patches required the devs to go in, update them, test them, basically do the work. This method is game agnostic and doesn't require the devs to touch them. They don't have to be updated to the next gen XDK, they just need approval from the pubs/devs to do it. A game like Far Cry 4 from 2014 was very unlikely to have a team go in and do the work to unlock the framerate or anything. Probably a lot of people who directly worked on it aren't even there anymore. Xbox have been able to do the work themselves, trick the system into running it at double the framerate and just needed approval from Ubi to unlock it for users.

It's definitely a really cheap (for Sony) way of boosting the attach rate of PS+ subs for new PS5 buyers. It's not a free gift. It's a drive to get early buyers locked in to paying for PS+ yearly.

Thread Is the PS+ Collection the PS5’s ambassador programme?
I think its an incentive to get people to sub to PS+, not to get them to buy a PS5. They don’t need to give away Days Gone or Black Ops 3 or whatever to get people to buy PS5s. I guess they see value in getting the most amount of early adopters giving them $60 a year for PS+ though. Makes sense.

My Steam purchases overall have slumped like a stone in the last couple of years. I think I only bought... Moose Life, Half-Life Alyx and Balder's Gate there last year. I guess I'm already subbed to Game Pass Ultimate anyway and I play a lot of games Play Anywhere between two rooms in my house so it just kinda makes sense that most of my PC gaming is via Game Pass now. I think if I didn't already have a sub then I might've carried on buying some of them on Steam (for a bit at least) but, for right now, there's no point in me buying games that I already have access to. I'm not paying for them twice.

Thread That PSN 1000 cloud save limit have to go.
I don’t know as if it’s a good system if users are expected to babysit their space though, especially when the 1,000 save limit is totally arbitrary (like, they already have a space limit in terms of GB - why also add in an arbitrary ‘1,000 saves’ limit too). 90 games is not a lot at all. Not at all! Especially for people using things like PS Now. I have 298 games installed on my Series X for example (it is open in front of me so I can check it).

Thread That PSN 1000 cloud save limit have to go.
I think a lot of 'core' gamers will easily have played 90+ PlayStation games across two generations (three if you include PS3 for PS Now users). Doesn't seem a lot to me at all, especially in a world where people are expected to play things like PS Now, PS+ games, F2P games and EA Play. Having said that, I don't think 90 games is actually an accurate estimate for this limit or we'd have a lot more people here who'd hit it already. I've got a more than 90 games played across my PS4 and PS5 and I haven't hit this limit (although I totally did hit the size limit before they upped it last time).

All the reasons outlined here are one of the reasons that the Game Gear is largely less interesting to me than the Gameboy, in terms of being a standalone console. So many of it's titles were simply straight ports of Master System games whereas the Gameboy was getting original titles like Super Mario Land, Metroid II, Link's Awakening. There was still a lot of crossover with the NES (thing's like Jurassic Park or, to an extent, Tetris even) but it really felt like it's own thing, whereas the Game Gear overly felt like a portable Master System to me. Which was exciting in it's own way but, in retrospect, a lot less interesting.

They can’t enforce it. They could cut a deal or try to convince them but they can’t force pubs to reduce the price of their products. That’s like iTunes forcing every band/record label from before 2013 to sell their albums for 50% off. They can’t. You set those prices yourself and they can’t just sell it for a different price on their whim. It’s not their product.

Thread Why don't Sony/MS permanently slash all PS3/360 digital game prices to like £5?
They presumably still see value in their catalogue and don’t want to instantly devalue their entire collection. You can’t go back (ie raise prices back to $40 later) if you wanted to. It’s a pretty extreme move. Probably better sticking to sales like they already do. Also, they’d only be able to mass price drop their own, as they can’t set prices for third parties.

I would say that just because she's one of gamings biggest female characters doesn't mean she has to be 'likable' and not show any emotion. I would say it’d be a waste of their talents to put them on making a new Order 1886 game, a game that was largely disliked, rather than continuing to be a leader and completely top tier in the VR space. If anything, they’ve really proved for talented they are with Lone Echo. They’ve finally made that top tier cinematic game with a big budget. This is my larger thought. I see it some people that I play with. ‘Fucking PC players’ is a bogeyman for ‘I just got beat’. My takeaway is usually that if this is an issue to the point that you’re consistently losing/getting beat then the problem is probably deeper than just the input device. Maybe the skill based matchmaking is failing you. Mouse vs controller seems like such a minor thing compared to other factors out of your controller like differing input lags of displays, random elements in the actual match (weapons picked up, knowledge of maps etc) and, yes, just good old ability. Getting rid of crossplay - because you’re not doing as well as you’d like in your electronic toy - feels like throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Massively disagree personally but opt out options would presumably keep all parties happy here. You are always gonna have advantages and disadvantages when playing online against other players. A player using a mouse of keyboard isn’t instantly more proficient than you. There are other factors, such as skill level for one, that are just as much tipping the balance of ‘fairness’. To me, input device is super low down the list of reasons to split playerbases up. Even within a group of controller users only there are variations in input device. Is it unfair when I play COD that my controller has paddles so I jump, spin around and shoot or reload all without taking my thumbs off the sticks? Or that my controller has trigger stops so my triggers are basically binary buttons with no more throw than a face button so I can shoot faster? Maybe, yeah. Doesn’t stop other controller users kicking my ass on the regular.

So it's muted in the lobby now? Presume in-game it's the same? It seems a shame that a bad microphone solution on the controller is causing them to just eliminate voice chat from the lobbies altogether. They shouldn't really have to. A global, obvious mute button in the game (not in the activity cards) would probably be the ideal solution. Hopefully they're working on that! Says they have longer term plans.

It doesn’t desperately need reiterating but having the default be ‘all chat comes out of the controller all of the time’ is such a bad decision. We’re no strangers to disgusting game chat at this point I’d like to imagine but, also, the people screaming racist slurs don’t normally blast out of my controller speaker - they’re normally at least restricted to my headphones/headset so the rest of my house doesn’t have to hear them as I scrabble around to mute them/mute the chat. It’s a real fun game and I’m sure it’ll be fun with younger kids like Rocket League. But I don’t think they’ll want ‘DIE YOU FUCKING BITCH!’ or some horrible homophobia screaming out of their controller speaker in their living room if they’ve forgotten to mute the chat that round. I’m presuming there must be parental controls that get around this being a thing for younger players. But even as a mid-30s adult it’s pretty embarrassing.

Me too, but messing with your personal mic setting doesn't help you when the other 15 people in your game all have theirs on without knowing, unfortunately. As I say, it just results in me muting the entire game chat which I'd rather not do. I wanna hear my team talking, not listening to a fifth of the party's Spotify playlist coming through a tinny speaker because they don't know their mic is live. Basically, I'm not concerned about mic picking me up - I've fixed that. I'm bothered by everyone elses mics and I feel like the issue of people not knowing/caring that their mic is live will only get worse as the PS5 gets into more hands and more casual players who don't dig through the settings are playing online.

I mention this at least twice in OP. I'm aware and I have this set. You changing your default mic settings does nothing to help you when the other 15 people in your game have theirs on by default. I'm not complaining about being on by default. It's not. I changed it. I'm complaining about having to hear Joe slurping a milkshake and hearing Sharon's husband screaming at their kids in the background and hearing Sally's music pumping and hearing Kenny having an unrelated chat with his mate because none of them know their controller has a live mic in it. This is what the thread is about. It just means I auto-mute every online game I play straight away, which isn't a great solution for someone who likes to chat online.

Thread It was the wrong decision to have the DualSense mic be always-on by default and I think Sony should change it with an update
Opinion piece here, but I don't think it'll be that controversial. The DualSense has a mic built in and it's really good. It's surprisingly clear and does a really decent job at filtering out button taps etc. No complaints - it's a great addition to a great controller. What's not great is that, by default, it's turned on all of the time and user's have to manually mute it. There is an option in your settings to have it muted and require a tap of the mic button to turn it on and There's been a lot of talk about the game chat issues in Destruction Allstars since the game came out and it sounds like the devs are patching in a mute button that doesn't require the activity cards (or something? I think they've said something's in the works) and a lot of shit is being flung that game's way about the chat that I, personally, think is unfairly attributed to them and not the core functionality of the mic on the DualSense. Basically, game chat is on by default while playing (which isn't unusual for a multiplayer game, obviously) but the issue, for me, isn't with the game or with what the devs have done, it's with the fact that everyone's controller - by default - is picking up all of the sounds in their room. And I think that a lot of players don't know and don't know they can mute it if they don't want that. Parent's screaming at their kids. People coughing into their mic (yuck), people just having conversations with someone else in the room. It's there for all of us to here I like game chat when it's people talking about the game and strategising or shit talking (within reason obviously). I don't like it when it's someone in the background screaming. Obviously this is always a problem with game chat to an extent, but the issue is usually reduced by the fact that players need to have specifically plugged a mic in/chosen to talk to the world rather than having it just be active on their controller without them knowing. My larger point is that I don't think it'd hurt to have the mic muted by default and activated by a tap of the mic button rather than the opposite that's in effect now. This is how I've got my controller set-up via the PS5 settings (muted but I can turn it on whenever by pressing the button) and it's totally usable. I feel like I can use it to chat just fine. I don't it to be on all of the time listening to every burp and every time my cat decides to randomly scream at me. Feels like an easy change that wouldn't upset anyone? Would be a positive.

Or bring up the scoreboard (hold select) while in-game and tap R3 there to do the same thing if you’re already in the game. I think the larger problem is that doing it via activity cards doesn’t seem to be a thing that people know to do. Half the OT is people asking how to mute the open game chat. I don’t think there’s anything to suggest that you should go via activity cards and then hit square on a specific card to mute people in a game. I only knew because people were saying in the OT. The console doesn’t support 1440p screens, only 1080p or 4K. You don't generally get games on Game Pass that are that time limited so it's not really as pressing a thing I'd say. Most games are around a year and we've seen pubs quietly extend their deals to longer and then talk about that online. So I guess the leaving dates of a lot of GP stuff is 'to be determined'. You're right, it is nice to see the leaving dates for some of this stuff up front but you equally don't generally get things like this month having COD Black Ops 3 there for only 3 months. I’m really excited for it to come out, while simultaneously 100% understanding why it won’t be for the masses. Feels like it’s made for a super narrow crowd. I’m fine with that but the game is not going to be a wide success like a Mario or a Sonic.

Thread Isn't it kind of crazy that the Gameboy Advance got THREE F-Zero games?
I had a similar experience with the DS! Also from the UK, my mum went to New York when the DS had launched but hadn't yet come to the UK (there was a four month gap between the US and PAL launches!) so I saved up my Satuday job wages and convinced her to get me a DS and Mario 64 DS while she was there. Felt very special to have this future tech four months before any of my friends were getting theirs!

Thread Isn't it kind of crazy that the Gameboy Advance got THREE F-Zero games?
I've been playing a good amount of GBA recently and it struck that the console got three whole F-Zero games over it's lifetime. For a franchise that has really only seen six console releases total (the 64DD release was an Expansion Pack really and, lol, 64DD) and that Nintendo has shown middling support for at best, it seems wild to me that they released one on SNES, one on N64, one on GameCube and then THREE back-to-back on the Gameboy Advance. And then... that was it. The series was never to be seen again. I think a big part of it being.. surprising to me is that, when I think of F-Zero, the GBA games are the absolute dead last entries that I think of. I think of F-Zero X or SNES F-Zero or Sega's amazing GameCube entry. I never ever jump to the GBA as an F-Zero console, yet that was the platform that saw literally half of all the F-Zero games. Were they even that popular on GBA to warrant three titles? And, if so, why release three games back to back and then totally bin the franchise? I remember playing a lot of Maximum Velocity but mainly because it was a launch title and of course you play a lot of the launch games. Did you play any/all of them?

Thread What’s the best way to connect an N64 to an OLED TV?
I think the Super 64 is actually the easiest option of all. It doesn't require any external power, it's literally just a plug and play little adaptor that plugs straight into the N64. There's not a great deal in it to be fair and I'm being a little pedantic. But I reckon the Super 64 wins in terms of 'ease'.

Thread What’s the best way to connect an N64 to an OLED TV?
The best way is the Ultra HDMI. But it's very costly, requires modding your console and is hard to find in stock. People are constantly on waiting lists for it. It's the best option. The one you linked, the EON Super 64, is the simplest option (and the one I use personally). It will not upscale and will largely look like how your N64 does on a CRT, blurry image and all. And it only works on an NTSC console (for those PAL machine users!). It is 100% lag free though and doesn't require any cutting/modding of your console. It's literally plug and play. I'm really pleased with mine in terms of literally just plugging something into the back of my JP N64 and being able to play it, lag free, on my 4k TV. It still looks like an stretched N64 image, but the 'slick mode' toggle on it is actually really good at cleaning up the image (I was 100% scepticle) and it's just very easy to use with no faff.

They play pretty differently and people generally prefer one franchise or the other. So whichever aligns with your tastes more. I, for example, vastly prefer the BO style of COD and bounced off MW super quick so I was really happy with Cold War. I have multiple friends (and more of them) that are the opposite though and don't care for BO at all.You should buy Modern Warfare.

EU regulators are not going to roll out ‘you have too many WRPG studios’. This isn’t gonna be broken down by dumb videogame genres. I guess some of that question depends on where you’re playing it and how much of the full rtx implementation they’re using. Full raytracing on PC isn’t just reflections. It did raytraced global illumination and debris as well. So even if you weren’t staring at a mirrored sheet of glass it’d still be working hard using the other forms.

Ok, 'massive' is subjective (and probably, rightly pointed out, incorrect). But they did reduce the density of pedestrians - and removed their shadows - and reduced their update rate in the RT reflections. My larger point being that they didn't just knock the resolution down to 1080p-1440p and call it a day. They made cutbacks to reach that and not all games are going to have things like large groups of pedestrians that can be cut back/have their quality lowered to make up for the doubling of framerate. Like Control for instance. It's mostly empty corriders in an office block with shiny windows. Like, I'm sure there are plenty of cutbacks that can be made (and probably have done, to be fair). But I worry we've been spoiled by how Miles got down to a very decent 60fps with raytracing and now fans expect that in every game. As seen by all the 'no 1080p 60fps RT mode?!' comments in here like it's the easiest thing in the world now. Looking at it here, they've probably halved(?) the amount of pedestrians in the reflections and nothing has shadows. Not the people, the tree, the awnings on the doors and windows etc. They definitely did the work.

But, no, if you’re looking for A NEW SURVIVAL HORRO RESIDENT EVIL then The Medium isn’t the game for you. No shotguns, no flamethrowers, no massive zombie snakes or T-virus bosses. What happened? Thankfully I’m a 100% digital gamer now but I have a few older PS4 discs. Maybe I'm too old for this. But I once had to learn to play Final Fantasy on a PlayStation. I had to learn to play Sonic on a GameCube. And I had to learn to play Perfect Dark on an Xbox. I kinda think that Miles Morales 60fps/RT mode is giving people false hopes for what other games are gonna do. It had to make sacrifices beyond just lowering the resolution. They massively reduced the pedestrian density and RT shadows. Not every game has things like pedestrians that they can easily cut down to get performance back. What you gonna cut in Control? Desks? They’ve presumably pushed the RT mode as far as they can. Simply lowering the resolution by another 200p would not double the frame rate you’d imagine.

It's kinda hard to say because there being no third parties left because they were all acquired by the platform holders (I think that is your hypothetical?) would mean that first party support would be INSANE and unlike anything we currently have. I think, if all developers in the world were under the umbrella of the platform holders then, yeah, probably. Played through the demo now. I like it! But, to be clear, this isn’t Mario or Sonic or Astro’s Playroom. This is a new Billy Hatcher for better or worse. It feels like it’s made for a very specific player. If you have never ending nostalgia for the GameCube or the PS2 era of AA platformers then this should trigger some of that. It basically feels like you’re running Dolphin and playing an up-ressed Gamecube/Saturn game. The sound effects/music are pure Nights. Like, the collectibles are basically the same sound. If that means something to you then you’ll get a kick out of it. I can see the potential of the costumes. There are definitely multiple ways of doing certain things and hopefully it’ll be fun to experiment with them (you can have three costumes in your ‘bag’ at once and each is basically new moves). The world one boss is 100% a Nights Into Dreams boss. This will not be a huge seller. It will be embraced, at best, by Sega fans and lapsed GameCube era players. This is a new Sonic. But I’m excited!

Thread Game of the Year 2020 Voting Thread (Voting open from January 27 through March 1)
A list absolutely shaped by a weird 2020. Needless to say, certain games rose with the tide of shit in 2020 and other games fell thanks to the constant, crushing woefulness of the year. With that in mind... 1. Microsoft Flight Simulator As the official (editor's note: unofficial) Euro Truck Simulator mod, it's the law that a boring sim like Flight Simulator needs to be on my list. But number one?! Look... in any other year I would have spent my year travelling the world, sitting on planes and visiting friends in other countries. A typical year will see me flying abroad probably six or seven times due to my line of work and having friends/family across the globe. It is what it is. 2020, on the contrary, has seen my industry on it's knees and has had me sat in the same room, on my own, for basically 365 days. I haven't seen my friends or family basically all year. Microsoft Flight Simulator let me travel. It's no surprise that a game that let me visit would be pretty freakin' important to me in 2020. When I sat back and looked at my list last week I couldn't, in good conscious, put anything higher than this. Truly an important game for me. And sims are cool! 2. Yakuza: Like A Dragon Similar to the above, 2020 shaped a new journey with the Yakuza franchise for me. I've always played Yakuza and I would paint myself as *a big fan* ever since the PS3 entries. But during lockdown v.1 back in March, my partner walked into the room while I was messing with Yakuza 0 and, unusually for her, got absolutely hooked on watching me play it and exploring the world with me. Like Flight Simulator, this was virtual tourism. We should've spent Christmas and New Year's in Osaka, visiting our best friends. We've spent the last four or five years travelling back and forth from Japan. It's truly special. To experience such a beautifully rendered aproximation of cities that we know and love in a damn VIDEOGAME hooked her and we set out on a challenge to play through all of the Yakuza games before Yakuza 7 finally hit Western shores. We failed, only getting as far as doing 0, Kiwami, Kiwami 2 and Yakuza 3 Remastered but this journey culminated in experiencing a new Yakuza game in the same year that it actually released and, to make it better, with my wife. Also, what a fucking game. 3. Paradise Killer This one came in super late for me. I actually bought it day one thanks to some good eShop pre-order discount but it sat there, installed, on my Switch for basically the whole year until I finally decided to see what was up in December. Holy fuck, I'm glad I did. A gripping investigation that just leaves the player the fuck alone and let's you work it out yourself. An city-pop soundtrack and unexpected references to 2000's era ska-punk that truly took me back to the grimey walls of pub venues as a teenager. 4. Spelunky 2 I actually thought Spelunky 2 was going to be my number one GOTY for most of 2020. It's a flawless game and, no surprise, if you loved Spelunky 1 then you need to play it. I have no slight to put against as to why it didn't make number one. It's basically perfect. It's just that other games came in late with more of an emotional punch. But, yeah, still absolute 10/10 and might as well be number one. 5. Half-Life Alyx It's a crime that more people aren't able to experience Alyx due to the constraint's of the hardware and, let's be honest, space. It's the peak of VR support so far and a shining beacon of what's possible when a giant, rich developer puts everything they have into a genre that's generally dominated by smaller, cheaper, experiments. It's barely worth pointing out (because everyone already knows) that Half-Life Alyx is a must-play if you have the gear to play it. 6. Animal Crossing: New Horizons Another '2020 made this game', really. For a whole heap of reasons, I really can't argue that Animal Crossing is 'the game of 2020'. It just is. It came at the perfect time and truly crossed boundaries and gave people a prime slab of Nintendo awesomeness and escapism when they needed it the most. And it's a great Animal Crossing! I might not've got quite as hooked on it as many of my friends (I see you with your 500 hours logged on your Switch accounts, friends) but I had a good 40 hours of daily check-ins, visiting friends and doing dumb seasonal events in the zeitgeist with everyone else. 7. Dreams Ah, Dreams. Such an ambitious, wonderful project. I almost didn't put the game on here but I've realistically been playing it since 2019 since it entered Early Access but, it's true, the game didn't really kick off until full release and more people could get their hands on it. It hasn't quite set the creation world on fire like I was hoping it would but there's a large part of me that's glad that the fucked up, experimental, arty crowd are the one's who are seemingly carrying the game. I don't need 'Crash Bandicoot demo made in Dreams' version 345. I do need the more experiemental things we see and that are largely the cream of the crop of the community. Nobody can doubt the amazing job that MM have done with creating this suite of creation tools. It's honestly a million times better than it has any right to be. 8. The Last of Us Part II Yeah, that one. I can't think of many games I've played that exude the 'AAA'ness that TLOU2 does. Everything in it is absolutely top tier, best in class and it all comes together in one of the most essential journeys that you can take in the medium. Without straying into spoiler territory, I truly connected with a lot of the decisions that the writers took based on the end of TLOU1 and that honestly blew me away. I think a lot of people felt this, but it felt 'made for me'. Just finally bring me Factions 2.0 and we'll be complete. 9. Assassin's Creed Valhalla Valhalla stands toe-to-toe for me with TLOU2 as 'big AAA game about sneaking through grass and hitting triangle on dudes while crafting and putting points into skill trees'. You know the drill. But it also stood toe-to-toe with it in terms of a lavish, large production that truly wowed me so often. I give it extra points for bringing Assassin's Creed to parts of the UK that aren't London (who hasn't wanted to go on a viking assassination spree through Tamworth and Repton?!) and, again - hi 2020 - travelling even that far, to places that I actually know and would normally frequent, was a positive this year. 10. Streets of Rage 4 I was so ready to case SoR4 onto the pile of 'why did you ruin this legacy'. But then I played it at EGX a couple of years ago and the demo piqued my interest. It... wasn't shit?! And then the game came out. And I loved it. It's a triumph. How a studio has managed to drag something with such narrow scope into the modern era while giving it new gameplay but still retaining what it is that makes it 'it'. I have few bad words to say about Streets of Rage 4 and urge everyone to play it.

Sounds like SoT isn't really ideal for you then anyway. It's not greatly conductive to short sessions. This Seasons progression is aimed at solving that to a degree but a session of the game is very much strapping in for a 'session', not loading up and having fifteen minutes of fun at a time. Nothing on your ship (in terms of supplies, loot, current missions etc) saves between sessions. You're starting with a fresh ship every time you load up. It's more comparible to a game of Dota 2 or something (in terms of starting a fresh game each time, long session with others) than playing some single player game that you can just stick in rest mode.

Thread Game Pass hits 18M suscribers, gaming revenue above $5B in a single quarter for the first time, Xbox Series "most devices ever sold in a launch month"
I think it’d be difficult to get the numbers accurate because so many people presumably just sub to Game Pass Ultimate, which includes both. Like, even if you don’t game on PC, it’s worth subbing to GPU if you were already subbing to both Gold and Game Pass. Plus you get EA Play. So those people have Game Pass for PC even if they don’t use it. So it’s be some weird mash up of x percent sub to Game Pass for Console, y amount sub to Game Pass Ultimate and z percent subscribe to Game Pass for PC.

Yeah, there are twelve 'Tall Tales' in the game that, roughly, plot a campaign with a story throughout the world. They're really great and that's roughly about 20 hours of content just for that. It's totally possible to play 100% solo but you're basically playing very hard mode. You're playing Squads in Apex/Warzone but you're on your own while everyone else is in a squad of four. Everything will take longer and you need to do every activity on the ship yourself. I play a lot on my own but I've also got 2,000 hours in the game so I know what I'm doing without even thinking about it. I would say that, if you want to play Sea of Thieves, at least try playing with others. The game is designed that way and by playing solo you're taking the 'well I guess we ought to let people play on their own' design decisions rather than what makes the game the most fun. The matchmaking in game is largely fine (you can start a ship on your own and then open up your session if you want and people will just join you) or, better yet, use the Xbox/Windows LFG tool. Put out a notice saying that you're brand new and learning the game. People will join and help.

I think the Plunder Pass stuff is half old stuff that's already offered in the Pirate Emporium (the Banjo Kazooie wheel, the collector's KI Sabrewulf figurehead etc) and then a full new weapon set and a few other bits. Definitely not a full ship. It's basically a bundle of other odds and ends and new weapons. It's pretty minor compared to the 100 levels you get for free. Just a little extra. Better than the Season really requiring you to pay for the Plunder Pass to make it worthwhile I think. You can see the Plunder Pass items at 2:50 in the video...

I'd say the better takeaway is how stuff (100 levels of stuff and tons of stuff) is available for everyone, for free. If you don't want to get the Plunder Pass extras within the Season then they'll just all be available to buy sperately once the Season is done. They go into the Pirate Emporium after. Some of them are actually items from the Pirate Emporium already. From memory the Collector's version of the KI Sabrewulf figurehead and the Ruby Splashtail Outfit are both in it. The Banjo Kazooie wheel as well I think? Needless to say, $9.99 for those 11 items is a lot cheaper than they'd be seperatly if you're the kind of person who was going to get them anyway.

It's basically 'get renown for doing anything in the game' which, to me, sounds really good. It doesn't tie players down to very specific type of challenge to progress the Pass. What it should do, in theory, is encourage seasoned players to do all of that shit that they don't both doing anymore because they min-max every session. I can't remember the last time my crew did a regular ass Skeleton Fort or did a fishing trip. Because we've already maxed out all of those reputations. Which is sad, in a way, because a lot of those activities are super fun. They just got left by the wayside somewhere along the way. It's a game about making numbers go up while you hang out and have stupid adventures with friends. A whole heap of new challenges (and i mean ) with free cosmetics attached to doing... basically anything in the game... sounds like a really good move to me.

Thread What do you think is more important, gameplay or narrative?
I think this is an impossible question. It just depends. Gaming is too broad. When I play Euro Truck Simulator or Flight Simulator, it's not the narrative that's keeping me up late doing my journey. But it's equally not the gameplay arguably. It's... the vibe? The feeling? But when I spend the next night playing Tetris 99 or PUBG or Rocket League until 3am it is 100% the gameplay. Try telling people hooked on Fall Guys that narrative is the most important thing in games. But then when I absolutely marathoned Paradise Killer earlier this year it was 100% the narrative/story that kept me going. 'Gameplay' in visual novels is, unsurprisingly, not the game's lead selling point. I would say, overall, it's how a game makes me feel that is the most important. Great, additictive gameplay can make me feel. A strong narrative can make me feel. Basically, a game needs to trigger something... emotive in my brain that makes me want to stick with it. And that can come from the rush or satisfaction of strongly designed gameplay or from a well crafted narrative. It just depends on the game.

Yeah, this would be my take. It's a fun Linus vid where he (once again) builds a computer and tests games on it. It's not a scientific test, it's not flawless and I know that Linus won't care. It's content that people like watching. It's entertainment. No big stress.

Thread Why is Japanese console gaming on the decline? Does anyone find this trend concerning?
Agreed with this. It’s a pointless conversation. The Switch is absolutely as much of a home console as it is a handheld console. The fact that it can be undocked and taken away does not invalidate it as a TV based, home console. I agree with everyone and will always reiterate my POV here. ‘Console gaming’ isn’t on the decline when the Switch is absolutely smashing it. The PlayStation brand might be on the decline in Japan? But a couple of PlayStations selling less than desired doesn’t mean that console gaming is dying. And trying to paint the Switch’s success as purely ‘because handheld so it doesn’t count’ is basically just saying ‘PlayStation is the only console that counts and if they’re not selling then gaming might as well be dead’.

Thread Those of us who lived through PS2's dominance of the sixth gen should count ourselves as lucky
My argument would always be that the comparitive 'small' games with lesser budgets these days are more interesting, purely because the market supports independent publishing and varying price points. A world where you can make a game and comfortably sell it, worldwide, at the push of a button and not have to price it at $50/£50 'because that's what games cost' opens you up to do more things. I think modern 'smaller', risky games like Outer Wilds, The Witness, Minecraft, Firewatch, Gone Home, Hades, etc etc would've had a much harder time in the PS2 generation because they would've had to have signed with a publisher and pressed tens of thousands of discs that would've gone to Electronics Boutique with an RRP of $50 and no path for future updates/evolution without a full sequel. We're spoiled with smaller games these days!

I mean, somebody ripping music and uploading it to YouTube doesn’t get a great deal of sympathy from me if they start receiving copyright strikes from the rights holders of said music. What they’re doing is copyright infringement. That’s kinda basic? Also lol at them thinking that making their videos hidden (unlisted) will stop copyright strikes. It’s still on their channel, they will be hit.

Thread ayooo pause... - GamingBolt puts out a video titled "Why Kena: Bridge of Spirits may be the biggest game of the year"
Spoiler warning: No new footage Reason one for 'Why Kena May Be The Biggest Game of The Year' is 'because it's visuals don't go for realism and are cartoony like Overwatch' and reason number two is 'because it's going to be like Zelda' just read over looped footage of the cutscenes we've seen before. So that should give you some kind of insight into the content of the vid. I'm with OP that clickbait titles like this can be more harmful than good here... Kena looks fucking amazing and doesn't need to be sold as 'THIS WILL BE THE BIGGEST GAME OF 2021' to sell why it looks great. Having said that, we all had to eat crow when that Astrobot video that said it was PSVR's 'Mario 64 moment' turned out to be true, huh?

Thread Rare: When was the company at its best?
I'm gonna go ahead and suggest that 'the Nintendo years' isn't really specific enough. They made Nintendo games for like 20 years. They put out 45 games on the NES alone! I'm presuming people don't mean the Nintendo years where they were developing stone cold classics like Seseme Street ABC, Wheel of Fortune and WWF Wrestlemania Challenge as 'the golden years'. The Rare making Jeopardy in 1988 were presumably a pretty different team to those making Star Fox Adventures in 2002.

It's hard to imagine developer topping their SNES-N64 golden days. Even someone like Nintendo don't knock classics out at that rate. And, with how much longer games take to bake these days, it'll likely never be beaten. It's why I find it hard when people beoman that they'll never reach the heights of that era again. Correct. Nobody will. They were a hive of classics and frequent absolute smashes. Even taking the N64... Blast Corps Killer Instict Gold Diddy Kong Racing Banjo Kazooie GoldenEye Jet Force Gemini Donkey Kong 64 Banjo Tooie Conkers Bad Fur Day Perfect Dark Mickey's Speedway USA All that in only four years! And in between that they were still knocking out Gameboy Color games too. Kings of that era.
