Thread Era, sell me on the MCU. Is it even for me?
MCU isn't really big in Japan, so it took me a few years before its popularity elsewhere of it caught my eye. I saw Avengers on an airplane in 2012, then AOU in 2015 in theaters. Didn't really stick with me. I saw Civil War a year later as I liked the idea and Spider-Man finally showed up, but again it didn't really resonate too much with me. Saw GOTG Vol. 2 on a plane and thought it was funny but nothing to get too excited about. Black Panther was the next one I saw, given its ties to Civil War and its immense popularity. I liked it but once again I wasn't hooked. A month later, I saw Infinity War on opening night with friends, and that's what finally got me invested in the whole thing. Then I went back and saw Thor: Ragnarok, Doctor Strange, Guardians Vol. 1, Spider-Man Homecoming, Iron Man 3, Winter Solider and Ant-Man, which finally allowed me to appreciate the universe-building elements Marvel and Disney were going for. I like the MCU a lot now and will see new movies and streaming series on day 1 if I can. I did eventually get back to the Phase 1-2 movies, like Iron Man 1, 2, First Soldier, Hulk, Thor and Dark World... and they are rough. I'm actually glad those flew over my head upon release due to their lack of popularity in Japan as I probably wouldn't have bothered by the time Infinity War rolled around. It surprises me that Iron Man and The Dark Knight were released in the same year. The latter is a far better film overall and I would've bet on DC over Marvel in 2008 based on that.

Thread Capcom releasing Resident Evil Outrage (Revelations 3) within 1 year after RE: Village according to Dusk Golem
The urban legend is that CODE: Veronica had the number "3" in its title at one point. CV was never a "numbered RE." But CODE: Veronica is very much a "mainline RE" with a highly relevant and centralized story, and therefore is important to the series in ways that other non-numbered games like Umbrella Chronicles and Revelations aren't.

I have a Master's degree, although it doesn't really have much to do with my current job. That said, I think it was worth it because I went to grad school for two years starting with the beginning of the financial crisis of 2008, when the job market tanked. Grad school (and the scholarships I received) let me ride that out while the economy recovered, and I improved my Japanese knowledge while I was at it (I went to grad school in Tokyo).

Seeing what Capcom accomplished with Revelations 3DS and now Monster Hunter Rise, I'm personally not worried at all about how a Switch-developed RE turns out. All 7 RE ports have performance issues, but that's clearly due to lack of optimization rather than the Switch being unfit to handle those games.

Thread Resident Evil Total Game Sales Ranking (All ports counted) - As of Dec 31st, 2020
I've been maintaining a private database of RE shipment figures going back to 2005. This graph compares RE2, RE7 (+GE) and the original releases of RE5 and RE6 in their first five or so years of sales (RE7 and RE:2 aren't there yet). The rate in which RE:2 is selling this early in its lifecycle is unprecedented for the series. It's pretty much inevitable that RE:2 overtakes RE5, even when combining all of its various re-releases. Here's another graph of the same games, but with all versions accounted for (last gen remasters, Gold Editions, etc.). It's not a perfect graph because we're not sure how RE5 Gold Edition sold before Capcom abruptly reported that 2.3 million copies were sold by Q2 2017. But still, I can't see RE:2 not taking the crown in a few years.

Actually, it didn't. Revelations' total doesn't include the Switch, PS4, Xbox One and 3DS versions. Capcom's internal data suggests that the 3DS version sold around 1 million, 500K on Switch and another 650K on PS4/XB1. I imagine in a few years, the Switch and PS4/XB1 will gain their own entries in the Platinum Chart. We're not sure why the 3DS version isn't, but Capcom might add it someday.Same reason as above–Revelations 1 is missing 4 platforms' worth of sales.

I can tell you that Capcom stopped caring all that much about Resident Evil sales in Japan when the company decided to make RE7 into a FPS. Japan still contributes to their overall sales, but trying to make RE more popular with Japanese gamers has stopped being Capcom's priority for nearly a decade. Japan now makes up under 10% of an RE game's total sales. Monster Hunter, on the other hand, is something Capcom will always keep Japan in mind for. That's why Rise was in development before anyone knew how World would do globally.

Thread Complete Chaos At Tokyo Retailer Over PS5 Sales
Microsoft also sells out every Xbox they ship to Japan nowadays. That doesn't mean the thing is performing well. And it's the same with the PS5. For what it's worth, this "one store" is actually Japan's biggest single electronics retailer in their biggest location in Tokyo. It's actually their flagship store. To be fair, Japan has largely managed COVID much better than almost all Western countries. Shopping hasn't proven to be a large source of COVID clusters (whereas activities like bars and restaurants have proven to be more problematic). Nintendo sells tons of Switch and software in retail stores every day, far beyond what Sony has been able to provide. And there have been no reported issues. The PS5 is in a zone where the supply-demand ratio is severely unbalanced and a vast minority of people misbehaving can create the chaos seen at Yodobashi.

It's not unheard of for custom-made coats to go for $1000+, but based on the information Capcom's shown, there is virtually nothing redeeming about that jacket. It looks amazing on Chris in the game, but the real life replica looks so disappointing... I had a coat tailor made at a reputable tailor in Tokyo back in October, and that one set me back $1300, but the fit is perfect and the materials and details (buttons, seams, etc.) well-made.

Thread Capcom needs to include more women protagonists in Resident Evil sequels
Those ROBOT CGs and high fidelity pre-rendered backgrounds weren't cheap to make. RE0 required tons of outsourced labor; just compare the staff lists of RE0 and any RE before it. Capcom also had high expectations for the game back in the day, so poured a lot into its marketing. The game was also in development from 1998 to late 2002, which was a long time back in the day. RE1, RE2, RE3, CV and REmake all took between 18 and 27 or 28 months. So, one can say that Capcom bet it all on the game that was only a prequel and starred a female protagonist. RE0 underperformed commercially, paving the way for the transformation of RE4. The extremely high budget of RE0 paid dividends when they remastered the game for last gen consoles. Visually, it looks fantastic.

Now, I definitely think the RE series needs to do more with non-white character portrayals. Sheva, Josh and Ada were steps in the right direction (Ada's impressive considering she was in RE2 1998) but there definitely needs to be more of it. I can't think of a single Asian male character in the series...

Thread Capcom needs to include more women protagonists in Resident Evil sequels
It's probable that Resident Evil 2 remake is going to become the best-selling singular title in the series. Internally at Capcom, the remakes occupy that same production pipeline that the Revelations titles did. But they're still important and notable. It's also worth remembering that RE2 remake was green lit because Revelations 2 did so well. RE2 and Rev 2 have the same director (and Rev 1's director went off to make RE7). In fact, the RE2 remake was Capcom hedging their bets in case RE7's first person focus didn't pan out commercially. That just goes to show how important RE2 remake was as a product for Capcom. Looking at different example, I personally think Disney's 2019 remakes of Aladdin and The Lion King were very important films when it came to representation of non-white actors and actresses. They were multimillion dollar productions that each grossed over $1 billion in the box office. Do you think them being remakes with known plots somehow detracts from what they've contributed in terms of representation? (Nevermind one's opinions of the quality of the films)

Thread Capcom needs to include more women protagonists in Resident Evil sequels
You've crafted your requirements in a manner so highly specific that I'm not sure there's really anything I can say that hasn't been said to you already. I disagree entirely with your assertion that remakes and spin-offs somehow matter less. Why is "moving a story forward" such a stringent requirement here? The Resident Evil plot doesn't linearly move forward; it bounces back and forth between the past and present. Looking at the series in this way is, at best, highly selective and flawed. RE0 may have been a prequel, but it easily had the highest development budget of an RE game until RE5 came out. Yes, it was an even more expensive game to develop than RE4. RE4, by intentional design, had a story that was not meant to matter at all. RE3 originated as a spinoff. CODE: Veronica, a game you disregarded in an earlier post, has one of the most important plot lines in the entire series, Claire has 65% of the playtime in that title and Alexia is the primary villain. The only reason it had no number was because it was a non-PlayStation title, not because Capcom considered Claire unimportant. Revelations had Jill playable for 75% of the story. Revelations 2 had 3 out of 4 protagonists as women, which is a very high ratio for series standards. Both games had women as primary antagonists. These titles matter just as much as the numbered RE games do in terms of the integrity and legitimacy of the products. Revelations outranked two counterparts (ORC and RE6) in 2012, and Revelations had more bearing towards Capcom's post-2012 direction with RE than RE6 did. I think RE5 did a great job keeping things balanced. It was Chris' story, sure, but Sheva and Jill were easily part of what made the entire game so memorable. RE6 isn't as dire as some have asserted here, either. Helena, Sherry and Ada were all important in their own right due to how the plot played out, and had more stake in the plot than Leon, Chris and especially Piers. RE:3 (the remake) also appears to be retconning certain elements and added a new cliffhanger ending, so even saying it "doesn't move the story forward" might not end up being true.

There’s so much ambiguous defining of importance and non-importance of a character’s appearances in this thread. Almost every female character in RE plays some kind of important role, whether it’s to advance the plot or support a gameplay design of some sort. It doesn’t necessarily have to be defined by gameplay time or number of appearances, and we’re at the point where we shouldn’t be disqualifying something because it’s a remake or a non-numbered title.

Thread Masahiro Sakurai discusses performance, development, & refunds regarding Cyberpunk 2077 [Via Source Gaming translation]
Just for context, refunds in Japan are far less common than they are in other countries like the US. For example, most of the big electronic stores offer refunds or exchanges, but only for extenuating circumstances like incompatibility (wrong size or format) or defects. Stores do not have return/exchange counters like you'd see at a Target or Walmart. The only big retailer I'm aware of that lets you flat out change your mind is Amazon Japan, and this is clearly something inherited from the US headquarters. (EDIT: IKEA as well.) Even retailers can't return stock to distributors or publishers if they ordered too many, or negotiate a discount, hence the prevalence of the "bomba bin." It makes sense then that Sakurai would be very surprised at CDPR offering refunds. It's a very unfamiliar concept in Japan and people on this forum who aren't familiar with Japanese retail practices shouldn't take that for granted.

One element people here often overlook is that Japanese business relationships aren't always focused squarely on the financials. The trust companies have between each other can be just as important in determining how a company decides where to release games. If a Japanese publisher feels like their Western sales on Sony platforms are sufficient, they may very well go down that path while ignoring the Switch entirely. There's already an underlying assumption that Western sales are more profitable for the AA/AAA-level publishers in the long run. I personally believe it's time for every developer with reservations about developing for Nintendo systems to bury whatever hatchet they might have, but there are some who just won't favor a Nintendo-centric approach.

It's also worth noting that major stores close an hour or two earlier than they did pre-COVID, cutting down shopping time. I imagine many are ordering online alternatively, and people choosing to stay in will buy plenty of games (explaining why software can continue to do well). On the other hand, tomorrow (Christmas) should be most people's final work day of the year, which means a longer holiday week and the potential for foot traffic to pick up and lift hardware sales above the crucial 300K mark. Thread US brands Vietnam, Switzerland as currency manipulators
There's definitely a history as far as Switzerland is concerned. After the Mark went away, the Franc (CHF) became Europe's only safe haven currency. During Lehman and the Eurozone debt crisis, the CHF rose very rapidly and was worth more than the USD for awhile. In response, the Swiss National Bank had to intervene in currency markets by selling the CHF in order to devalue it. The SNB even committed to maintaining a minimum exchange rate between the CHF and EUR, which is something all developed nations (including Switzerland) are supposed to avoid in the interest of free and fair economies. Japan's the other big example among developed nations. The Yen (JPY) should, in all honestly, probably be around 80 or even 70 yen to the USD based on market fundamentals, but the Japanese government tends to pull out all stops once it falls below 100. The Bank of Japan will do something like dump tons of liquidity into banks and drive interest rates down, or outright intervene by selling the Yen. They do this to simultaneously bolster their exports and prevent deflation. In my opinion, the JPY is weaker than it should be but no one in Japan has the willpower to admit it. I'm honestly not sure why Germany and Italy are on there. The EUR tends to rise and fall depending on whatever crisis or lack of is affecting the region. If there's a no-deal Brexit, it'll likely fall, in line with fundamentals.

Slight correction: Capcom upgraded Nemesis to a numbered entry because it would bolster Capcom's financial position, which was affected by the delay of Kamiya's game (and the PS2 itself).

Thread Square Enix’s Matsuda: Covid-19 has caused “time to stand still”; “we couldn't develop anything.“
There are inherent difficulties in instituting WFH for game companies, including large Japanese publishers like Square Enix. For one, many homes in the Tokyo and Osaka areas are small apartments with limited space. This means potentially being stuck on a kitchen table with a laptop instead of an ultrawide or dual-monitor setup. Another consideration is the quality of the internet connection, whether it has the speed and bandwidth to work with the rest of the organization quickly enough, or if it meets various security requirements for server access. Imagine having to download a 60GB game build several times per day/week... It's not a trivial thing no matter what and to suggest so is oversimplifying the challenge.

It's not that your understanding of the overall narrative is flat out wrong – it's just the details aren't correct.Correct.Mostly correct. But RE2 was actually planned for Saturn as well as PlayStation even when the game existed in its 1.5 form. This isn't the best way to describe its development. RE3 was originally RE1.9, and intended to be a short spinoff. That's why the gameplay in it is so unorthodox and we see almost none of it used in any following RE (CV, REmake, RE0).In some ways, yes, but the "next level" talk was always intended to manifest in Kamiya's RE2 sequel (which became DMC), not with CV. CV was meant to be a graphical and narrative leap over RE2, but not necessarily a gameplay one.Sony had no say in CV's development or RE3's numbering. Capcom wanted numbered REs on PlayStation systems out of their own volition. Capcom's upper management didn't want people to buy a Dreamcast for RE"3", an N64 for RE0 and then a PS2 for RE4. In this sense, CV and RE0 were a bit expendable if you only owned a Sony system, but that doesn't change the fact they were more important than RE3 itself. This just isn't true. And none of this is either...

RE3 barely advanced the story because originally there wasn't one. It also wasn't written by the main series writer of the time (Noboru Sugimura) because it was so unimportant. CV, on the other hand, has implications explored as recently as in RE7.

Mikami said the same thing to me in our book interview a few years ago. Other Capcom figure heads have said the same; even RE3's director recognizes that CV was a more significant game than RE3 in terms of production values and plot, and that getting the number 3 added to it sort of did a disservice to the RE brand as RE3 didn't, in their eyes, reflect what a numbered RE should've had. You definitely don't have to agree with Mikami or the others who think this, but I feel like this was reaffirmed with RE3's mediocre remake, which was partly outsourced and de-prioritized.

CODE: Veronica didn't get a number because Capcom was committed to having numbered RE games on PlayStation systems, which were considered the main home of the RE franchise at the time. It's the same reason why they went with Resident Evil Zero for Nintendo 64 (think of "Zero" as a word and not a number here). CODE: Veronica had a much, MUCH larger budget than RE3 all around.

Very little of this is accurate at all. Sony never "sabotaged" anything and was always content with what Capcom planned for its platforms until Capcom moved RE4 to GameCube.

Navigating the Japanese Xbox website is such a nightmare. It's clearly not designed for Japanese readers and isn't fully localized. At least it gave us pure comedy such as this

Thread ‘Resident Evil’ Reboot Films Casts Claire, Jill, Chris, Wesker, Leon, and Birkin
Three different TV-film productions at the same time is a lot for one franchise like Resident Evil. It’s like Capcom saw what AMC was doing with all those TWD spinoffs and decided it wanted a piece of the action. Glad they’re taking different approaches. One is canon to the game series, the other a reimagining and the third its own thing altogether.
