GMTK is so good. I realised I didn't watch the second video in the series yet, so I watched both back to back. While it's good to see developers putting more thought into accessibility options lately (like holding down a button instead of button mashing/QTEs), I love how he details a lot of ways in which improvements can still be made. Looking forward to the final video.

My amiibo purchases have definitely slowed down in the last couple of years. It's rare for me to get anything non-Zelda related nowadays. I did get the Mario Odyssey wedding amiibos, though.

I caught up with episode 1 and 2 over the weekend, and really enjoyed it. Despite being made by a different studio, they have nailed the feel of the game and the characterisation of the characters. I have to say, it's really painful getting emotionally attached to Rachel knowing what happens to her. Seeing more of Chloe's backstory stings for similar reasons.

So I have a question about getting dusty tokens. I just drew with someone in a challenge and got 0 dusty tokens from it. I already sent this person a challenge earlier and vice versa. Is that why? Not sure if there's a cap on how many you can get from the same person per day. With the challenges the best thing to do is to do the battle one in the marketplace and only defeat one Nevi. Then let the time run out. Send it to a friend who understands that they should either do the same, or lose so that you win (if they don't need the dusty tokens). I have managed to get around 500 today from doing that.

Some shrines are hidden behind rocks/boulders, and other tricky places that can't be seen from afar. If you have the Sheikah sensor turned off for most of the game (like I did), it'll be pretty hard to find them unless you scour the entire map again and happen to pass nearby. Others are hidden behind side quests, so look for any NPCs that you haven't encountered yet, particularly in less explored areas. Something that did help me out a bit was looking at areas of the map that didn't have any/many shrines, but that might not help you a lot at this stage. That said, I'm happy that I had it turned off for my first playthrough, as it heightened the sense of adventure and discovery.

At this point I'm doubtful we'll see much or any more improvement when it comes to the framerate. Not sure what it is about this specific area that causes issues. A difference I've noticed, though, is that I no longer get the one second frame hitch after attacking a Moblin with a two handed weapon. It's okay if you don't think it's a masterpiece, honestly. That's incredibly subjective, so you don't have to agree. I was trying to assess my own views about the game after completing it, too. I do think a game can be a masterpiece despite its flaws. For me it depends on whether or not the game was truly able to achieve what it strove to do, even if it stumbles in some other aspects. With BotW, that would be the open-air formula and the sense of freedom and exploration, which it absolutely knocks out of the park imo. It's also the type of game where I can completely understand if it doesn't click with someone. It depends on how much the things it does well matter to you, or if you prefer an entirely different approach when it comes to those things. I agree so much about it being like a warm bath, and easy to dive into. It can be almost therapeutic in a way.

If you want, keep the diamonds, rubies and sapphires for now. Sell the other ones as they spawn very frequently, and although they don't sell for as much as the ones I mentioned earlier, it adds up quickly. There are also NPCs that will buy certain precious stones for more than your average shop owner/vendor. But in general, as you get in deeper in the game, you'll find sites that are rich in mining ores, so there's no problem with selling your precious stones if you need the money.

Hold ZR to switch between bows/arrows on the left and right d-pad. There's no limit on how many shrines you can do, the world is your oyster. Rupees are definitely not worthless, you need them for certain items that will be sorely needed to progress through certain areas. There are ways around this, but getting these items is the smoothest way to move forward. I recommend selling your precious stones to gain money quickly. They can be easily farmed later on as you open up more of your map. Selling cooked meats is also a good way to earn money. You need to take horses to stables in order to register them. o/

The game doesn't really hold your hand. You won't get waypoints or little dots on your map telling you where all your points of interest are. You see something? You figure out how to get to it. That doesn't mean the game doesn't tell you what you need to know, you just need to do a bit of experimenting to figure it out at times. Exploration is one of its strengths, so if you don't enjoy any of the things I mentioned, then it may not click for you. I would at least try to go to the first settlement in the game before giving up, though.

There are two levels of fire/heat/cold in the game. Death Mountain (near the top) is hotter than the areas around the bottom. You're not in the right area yet if even the Fireproof elixir is doing nothing. What you need is another item or piece of clothing to help protect you from burning (aka two items of clothing OR one clothing item and the elixir protects you from the secondary level of fire - equipping an ice weapon also acts as a layer of fire protection). Are you trying to find a settlement? Or just generally exploring? No, you don't need a special item for the Lost Woods.

No, I don't think any of them break the game. Iirc you can't upgrade the DLC armour, so it'll offer you less protection in combat. But each armour set or item is useful in its own way. Like the Korok mask helps you to find Korok seeds. The others have their own buffs, but it's nothing you can't already get in the game from other outfits. There's also a talisman that you can use to teleport back to places that don't already have a fast travel point. The hero's path feature is pretty useful, too. The main attraction in the outfits is style/nostalgia imo. Don't worry about getting them right off the bat, though. They're hidden in specific places on the map, and the game will give you a hint as to how to find them, but they're very spread out. You'll probably find them organically through your journey. I've only played them in normal mode so far, but I definitely wouldn't say it's impossible. It can be challenging at times, sure, but imo it was the fun kind of challenging. If you run in without thinking, it'll be hard, but you can get through it with a bit of strategy. I wouldn't say I'm a pro at the combat or anything, and I managed just fine. From what I am hearing DLC 1 is difficult in an unfair way in Master Mode, though.

Yeah I found my first 70 or so without even having the Sheikah tracker thing activated. I turned it off as soon as I could because I wanted to find them naturally through exploration. You can see a lot just from scanning the horizon from high surfaces like the towers. There's also always one near a stable or town. So if you come across a new stable or settlement, you know there's one near by.

If you'd really rather not, then I think it's worth it if you plan to continue to play the game on Switch. The expansion pass definitely enriches the experience. However, don't go in expecting a meaty story or anything like that. It gives you a bit more insight into the Champions, and offers some cool challenges. It's basically a bit more of the things people loved about the game. I enjoyed it a lot, but definitely temper any expectations about the 'story' part of the DLC.

It's integrated into the game itself. All of the treasure chests can be found right away. DLC Pack 1 has a certain condition that I won't spoil. DLC Pack 2 unlocks after you're done with most of the main quest. I'd advise you to try to finish them both before completing the game, instead of afterwards.

Good to see it finally clicked with you! The DLC is content that is integrated into the game itself. That said, besides the outfits and talisman that you get from treasure chest, the core of it isn't something you'll be tackling at the start or early on in your journey, so you can wait a bit if you'd like.

Yeah, Guardians, as well as all non-boss enemies in the game, respawn after a Blood Moon. I would just come back later once you have a lot more Guardian parts rather than grinding. You should be able to get a decent amount organically through playing the game.

As you defeat more enemies, you'll get stronger ones with better weapons that you can claim (and you should eventually get better weapons from treasure chests, too - the ones in shrines are dependent on the kind of weapons you have already found). Hopefully you get some stronger weapons soon!

I used the Pro HUD for my playthrough so I didn't even know that was a thing until I finished the game. :P Stamina buffs helped me out a lot at the beginning. You can probably still get there if you cook up some meals. I got the giant ancient cores from some shrine treasure chests. I think I got the regular ancient cores from defeating Guardians. Giant ancient cores might be a rare Guardian drop, too, I think.

Yeah they come back, which is why it's advisable to sell them if you need money. You can kind of tell what you'll get from them, but not exactly. I've noticed that ones that tend to shimmer yellow are more likely to contain precious stones. And the ones that shimmer blue always have luminous stones in them (it's more obvious at night, as these ones glow).

I would personally play the DLC before finishing the game. At least the Champions Ballad part (and imo Trial of the Sword if that's your thing, since the reward is powering up the master sword). The Champions Ballad is unlocked after completing all four Divine Beasts so you can wait until you've completed that if you want. Btw the shrines in the Champions Ballad are some of the best in the game imo. A lot of them have been really clever or interesting, but not obtuse. I say this after completing all 120 in the base game.

All of the DLC content (Trial of the Sword and Champions Ballad) can be played during your playthrough. The treasure chests (with outfits and such) will be placed on your map, as well, and you'll receive quests giving you hints about where you can find them. I would say the Champions Ballad is best played in your initial playthrough, but it's only unlocked once you have completed all of the Divine Beasts. If you're going to get the DLC anyway, I would say yes, it would enrich your current playthrough.

The stamina can be a bit frustrating at first, yeah, but weirdly I enjoyed it. I liked having to be careful and plan out everything, even something as simple as climbing a cliff. One day I'll go for that Great Plateau -> Hyrule Castle run. :P The autosaves make it pretty stress free, so maybe that's helping with the difficulty. Good luck with getting it done before Christmas~ There's a lot I need to wrap up before the year is over, too. I had to work out my feelings towards the game for a month or so, but in the end I decided it was in my top 5 games of all time, too, and my second favourite Zelda game. Yep. When you get out of the opening area, you have the option to go in any direction you choose, even though there is an objective to chase right away if you want. Some people played the game in a fairly linear fashion (even though there isn't any real order to doing the main dungeons), others chose to go off the beaten path, and others chose to uncover the entire map before even attempting any of the main quest. It's interesting to see how each person's journey varied (and finding out that some people missed some pretty cool moments/quests despite playing for 100+ hours). When I replay the game, I'll definitely do things differently. I guess that would depend on how skilled you are at the game. I wouldn't say it's too difficult to pull off. The guardians can be pretty terrifying at first, but I was able to handle them later on in the game. Great to see my alt here! :jolly: There are three 'levels' that come with a set of rooms (I think 16?), each increasing in difficulty. You can take a break and save between each level. I finished the first one and managed to finish it on my first try. The enemies and items in each room will be the same, so even if you die on your first attempt, you'll be able to figure out a strategy for the next time. I think most people are speculating that we'll find out after XC2 is released. Maybe at The Game Awards? Aonuma has reconfirmed that it's coming this year several times, at least. After the radio silence I hope we'll get something substantial, too. I know we're getting a new shrine and new challenges on top of the new story, so I have to assume these take place in a different area. Here's hoping!

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the Wii U version has gotten much performance updates? It being the version they were working on for the longest, it's probably optimised as much as possible, so this video should still hold true for the Wii U version at least: The Switch version has had a few performance patches since then, though. A bit late on the moderation issue, since I was trying to work out where I stood on it. I don't report that much, in my opinion anyway, but I have found that most of the time it results in a warning or ban. I think warnings and temp bans tend to serve as a guide for others on what is or isn't tolerated in a thread and the forum as a whole (for most, anyway), unless it's a very heated and fast moving discussion. But honestly, even on the old forum where perma bans were frequent and came even without prior offenses, those kind of threads tend to continue to get low quality and inflammatory/offensive posts either way (see the recent Pewdiepie controversy which resulted in a never ending graveyard). So first of all I'd like to thank the moderators for being pretty quick in responding to reports, and trying their best to maintain a welcoming forum. With a forum as active as this one, I know it isn't easy. However, while I understand that finding a balance between being too heavy handed with moderation and being fair while not giving too much leeway is hard, I do wish things were a bit more strict when it came to repeat offenders. I don't see why people who have made their intentions clear with repeat offenses should simply get a slightly longer ban. Those kind of people don't deserve a platform, in my humble opinion, particularly when they make it clear they only post in these threads to spread their agenda and dismiss the concerns of others, instead of participating in an open dialogue. It's to the point where I see several familiar faces in threads that deal with progressive issues, and though they have gotten one or several bans, they continue their antics. It makes it an uncomfortable place for women and minorities to discuss, and I think it's gotten to the point where I no longer have the desire or energy to post in these threads. It's disheartening that even on Era it feels like a big boys club over on the gaming side, and as things currently stand, that won't be changing any time soon. But it's good to see this is a process that is still being worked out, so I hope to see things improve in the future. Thanks once again for your hard work!

Some of the posts were outright defending sexualising child/child-like characters just because they're fictional ("You do know anime isn't real, right?") and only one person got banned on the very last page. Then you have others calling kiddy characters their waifus. The entire subject was just treated like a joke after the first couple of pages. I have no idea why that was allowed to go on for as long as it did.

It's pretty easy to fabricate that kind of thing in an online discussion, so probably. But there are also some women who have sexist/misogynistic views, sadly, even though they don't benefit from thinking that way at all. Just as it's possible to find people of colour who excuse racism against their own people. They're always in the minority, though. In any case, it doesn't invalidate the complaints that many women have, and it's a really cheap tactic employed by men to reassure themselves.

It really bothers me when people assume your gender on a forum, especially in this forum since all it takes is a click to see if the person has chosen to display their gender or not. People often make that assumption about me, too, particularly in threads that concern women. The worst kind of posts for me though are the disingenuous ones 'defending' women from other women. Like "I feel so sorry for all of the women who are being shamed for what they wear", and similar arguments in a thread criticising sexually objectifying character designs.

It's honestly demoralising trying to discuss or read most topics related to women in video game forums. Era and the old forum were a bit better in the sense that at least there were more people speaking out against sexist and misogynistic views, but it still feels like it's a bunch of men talking over you a lot of the time. I applaud the people who have the mental fortitude to keep discussion going in these threads, because I get worn out quickly.

I've seen that term thrown around (by guys) the second another guy speaks up about sexism, or defends a woman in any way. I agree that there are disingenuous people who are putting on a front for ulterior motives (or just generally ignorant/misinformed), but there are also other people who genuinely have empathy and respect for their fellow human beings. When I see men throwing it around it's usually with a lot of venom, as if they have betrayed their own gender or something.

The negativity surrounding 'white knighting' is strange to me. Same as the anti-'SJW' rhetoric. It's as if having empathy for other human beings is a bad thing to some people. I can't tell if we're making progress or regressing when it comes to certain topics, but I think we are making some progress... albeit slowly. It's a shame that there's so much backlash against said progress, but that's always been the case in history. When you're used to having it better than others, equality seems like oppression. At least that's how it is if you lack basic empathy, I guess. Regarding men talking over women, I've seen men explain how a woman's anatomy works in the presence of women (usually to justify excessive jiggle physics as being 'realistic'), amongst other things, so yeah... things can get pretty frustrating over on the gaming side.

Some reactions might come across as exaggerated, but I'm sure that's just because we all like the allies and enjoy their content a lot. Kyle not being there for the Nintendo direct is a bummer, but I'm keeping my hopes up for a fun stream. A lot of the allies are big Nintendo fans, so I'm sure we'll still get some great reactions.

I honestly have less time to watch YouTube these days, so I have no problem with just skipping a group stream if I find it boring. EZA are putting out more than enough content for me to keep up with, so a game that I'm not interested in winning every now and again isn't a big deal for me. But then again, the group streams go live at like 2AM for me, so I can understand people who usually watch it live being a bit more disappointed.

The way I see it is that two games that you enjoyed to somewhat varying degrees both being 10s is fine. It's not meant to be a 100% accurate and unique representation of how much you enjoyed it. You'll find that information in the content of the review itself. Most reviewers seem to reserve perfect scores (regardless of which scale they're using) for games that they deem to be masterpieces/masterful (i.e., what 5 stars was for EZA). I never took a 10 to mean that it was the pinnacle of my enjoyment of video games, and that nothing could surpass it. I think the 20 point scale is useful in the sense that it offers a little bit more leeway than the 10 point scale, but isn't as nitpicky as the 100 point scale. Kind of the perfect balance for me.

Happy with the change, myself. The 20 point scale is the perfect balance between simplicity and just enough nuance. Not fond of the 100 point scale because it seems too nitpicky to me (I prefer the 10 point scale to this). I guess it's all a matter of perception at the end of the day. What matters the most is that the Allies now have a system where they can comfortably express their opinions, and not feel misrepresented.

Even if they end up picking BotW, I think the process of picking the top 10 will still be intense and interesting. I'm personally looking forward to it, and I don't think BotW winning is as much of a guarantee as some think. Either way, I hope they fight for whichever games they truly believe in instead of trying to put on an 'interesting' show and going against the grain. That would be a disservice to themselves, and I personally watch them to see them being honest and passionate about their opinions. And... I don't think PUBG will be #3. I will be surprised if it's in the top 5, honestly. I haven't heard anything from them to suggest that any of them feel passionately about it. All in all, it made the atmosphere a bit awkward, even if the sender didn't have any bad intentions. I don't think Jones' attitude towards women and minorities is the reason the gift was sent, or at least nothing in the note suggested that. First of all, I didn't hear anything about Jones being okay with 'ruffling feathers'. Maybe I missed something. My takeaway from it was that Jones is okay with being 'roasted' by the community, because he thinks it's possible to learn from it and he's grateful for the support on patreon, so it's a small price to pay in his opinion. Jones tried to challenge Colin on a few points, such as how to deal with someone being offended by something you did/said even if you don't see your behaviour as offensive. However it felt pretty disingenuous when they were talking about how no matter what you do someone will be offended, since Colin clearly doesn't care whether he offends people with his behaviour or not. Despite Jones challenging Colin on some issues (basically being more diplomatic and trying to reach an understanding with others instead of being dismissive), it was pretty disappointing to see Colin throw a huge pity party about how he was defamed and vilified, and to not be challenged at all on how he behaved during the whole ordeal. And apparently we held our wallet like a gun to Jones' head, but Jones countered that by saying he's proud of everyone who left. I can sympathise to an extent since Jones isn't a confrontational person, and he was a guest on his podcast, but it's pretty sad that those issues haven't been addressed by Jones at all the past week or so. I think listening to the podcast, it doesn't come across as harshly as the summary, and it probably went as well as you could realistically expect. One thing I will say though is that it's unreal listening to how wildly different their attitudes are. Jones is certainly the more mature and well adjusted individual, to put it lightly.

As a heterosexual and cisgender person, I can't imagine ignoring LGBTQ people when they try to explain why something is hurtful or harmful towards them. It's just incredibly arrogant and cruel to pretend that you know more about these issues than them, or that you have a better grasp of what they have to go through on a daily basis. Sadly from what I have seen this is how Colin reacts in every kind of situation that is similar to this.

The problem is that that conversation started with this: So he was already aware that his behaviour was offensive. That individual and one other person went into detail to explain why that kind of behaviour (comparing nonbinary genders to inanimate objects) is transphobic and hurtful to nonbinary people. He then went on to say "Cool. I think you should be able to identify as an oak tree if that's what makes you happy. Or a stop sign. Or a woman." If you don't think Colin knows what the impact of his words are here, you're basically saying he is unable to pick up on social cues and has no reading comprehension, because he was literally just told that was offensive, and yet he did it again anyway. Because he doesn't care. If someone was talking to a minority and they explained how a certain phrase or word is used in a racist way against them, would any empathetic and decent person immediately use that word against them? He was asked to listen to transgender people, and basically just dismissed them instead. This is why people say that dialogue with Colin goes nowhere.

I understand your concern, but I don't think this will break the community. Amongst the people who are disappointed by the way things were handled, some are still patrons (probably most), and there's nothing wrong with either reaction. Even the people who are happy or fine with the situation, 99% of the posts are respected and don't lead to bickering. The problem is when people come in and dismiss other people's feelings on the matter simply because it isn't important to them, or come in to gloat and antagonise the community. That was never going to lead to anything productive. Regarding the mood of the thread, I think trying to force the conversation on to a different topic will only make people dwell on the issue longer. Last week I noticed that when people tried to urge others to change the topic, that only led to more tense posts. When people naturally steered the conversation to other topics through their own posts, that was a lot more effective. I would suggest the same here again.

It's about giving a platform to someone who we feel propagates hateful and spiteful behaviour, and alienates a big part of the audience. Of course we can't control the allies. They are their own people, and we are supporting them voluntarily. Brandon did ask for feedback, though. He said that if the audience really hates the idea of something, he wants to hear that kind of feedback. That's all you're seeing. I'll just say this. It's really easy to tell people to tolerate people who spout sexist and racist things, when you aren't directly affected by those things in your life. This really reminds me of when people told black people to not be offended by the N word after the Pewdiepie debacle because it's "just a word" and we shouldn't give it power. It's easy to say that when you haven't had that word used against you since you were just a child. We didn't give that word power, the people who used it against us did. It's not just a word when racism has a very real effect on your life. This way of thinking shows a complete lack of empathy for marginalised people. Do you have to personally experience something for it to matter to you? When women are constantly shut down with sexism and misogyny, sexist jokes aren't just simply 'jokes'. It's a reminder of the sexism we face on a regular basis. Yes, we should be kind and respectful to others (see how no one is taking issue with Brandon being on friendly terms with Colin), but that doesn't mean you should be giving a platform to someone who is proud and doubles down on their offensive views, and I'm not talking about politics. I'm talking about basic human decency. To see people turn around and say we aren't showing love and respect to others because it isn't a big deal to them is just saddening, frankly. What's more saddening is to see people care more about racist/sexist behaviour being labeled than the actual racist and sexist behaviour itself.

I remember some people arguing that it was 'setting the bar low' to call someone a racist for using a racial slur as an insult in a certain thread on the other forum. No, let's call a spade a spade. If you do racist or sexist things and revel in it, don't be shocked when you're labeled a racist or sexist. That's on you and no one else.

Yep. Ian is the best. I also feel like my feelings about games doesn't always align with his, but I enjoy hearing his take on things nonetheless. He always advocates for people to play what they like and enjoy, and acknowledges when his opinion on something is the outlier (e.g. TLOU). I was feeling pretty down over the weekend, and decided to rewatch some old EU episodes (particularly the ones where Ian is just chilling with one or more of the allies) and it did a great job of cheering me up.

The other allies were interjecting through some of that. Ian wasn't randomly pausing for no reason. As for Ian's careful phrasing with the male presenting part, I think that was referring to gender expression and identity, which is something that Ian has avoided talking about explicitly before for obvious reasons. As Maiar said, the point was clear, even if there were some pauses or thinking phrases/sounds sprinkled in between. I don't really get why you're saying you're siding with Kyle when they're all on the same side and are making the same point. I know Ian isn't afraid to get political, but the people in the comments insinuating that Ian in particular was pushing politics are just going after an easy target. Like I said earlier, Ian wasn't even the person who discussed the topic in depth the most during that episode.

Welcome to the thread ! I don't really get this comment since Brandon went way more in depth into the topic than Ian did. In fact Ian was there when Kyle first said they weren't going to discuss the NeoGAF situation and supported Kyle's decision to not discuss it (he said something along the lines of "What would we achieve?"). All Ian did last episode was assure victims that they were on their side, even if they don't discuss these things on the podcast.

I haven't looked at the comments, but have gotten a gist of it based on what people are saying. It's strange that these people are singling Ian out, because Kyle and the rest of the allies present all agreed with the sentiments he expressed. Kyle even said "That is the official EZA stance going forward" (paraphrasing). More importantly I am constantly confused why these people are even following the allies, when they make it so clear that they have an attitude of love, respect and tolerance for others. If it's a closed minded and bigoted stance they're looking for, I'm sure there are other channels that share their sentiments?

It has always appeared so genuine to me, especially since he seems to take an optimistic approach to life in general and not just video games. No matter how in love with a franchise or game he is, though, that never clouds his ability to be critical and acknowledge a game's faults.

I sometimes suspect the same thing. I remember in the comments section of the episode where PDP was brought up during the L&R section, some of the comments were straight up insulting the intelligence of the allies (because they said don't use racial slurs...). I can't fathom how such a person would be a regular viewer. These comments were also somehow the most upvoted comments, too, so that theory of having like minded people mass upvote certain comments has merit, I guess. I can't say I felt 'offended' by the recent trailer for TLOU2, but I did find it a bit unsettling. I think people raise a good point when they question whether such a graphic and violent trailer was in good taste during a conference/showcase. I'm sure those scenes will make sense in the game, with the necessary context. No one is doubting Naughty Dog's ability to make compelling characters and well told narratives within games. However, most of that context was missing here. And honestly if you're playing TLOU2, you're going into that game knowing what to expect. Not everyone who is watching their PGW conference wants to see that, though.

I think the fact that this many months after release, people are still finding out things that you can do in BotW is what made that experience so magical for me. With the newly added 30 second capture feature in Nintendo Switch, people have been uploading cool short clips to twitter that make me think, wait, you can do that? And I played that game for 190 hours before forcing myself to move on. That's what BotW was for me. The sense of wonder, freedom and exploration. I think it all depends on what you treasure the most in gaming. That's why I can see why BotW could be the GOAT to one person, and not click at all with another. But honestly I think some people took the 'you can do anything!' comments in reviews too literally. Of course you can't do anything and everything. But the physics engine allows you to do a lot of things that you wouldn't think to do normally in a video game, but make sense with the set of rules present in the game's universe. Most people would not think to use magnesis on a spinning boomerang and use it as a buzzsaw, but you can do it if you're creative enough to think of it. That and the world being extremely charming to me made the experience I had playing it unmatched, even if there were some glaring faults that stuck out to me. It's just overall the strengths far outweigh the shortcomings. What makes me most excited, though, is the way that they can build on the formula in upcoming games, with this being the team's first attempt at a modern open world Zelda game. BotW isn't my favourite Zelda game, but I can absolutely see why it would be someone else's.

I agree. And besides the side quests, there were a lot of cool things in the game that were not tied to any kind of side quest, and I just stumbled upon due to exploration (What's that thing over there?) or an NPC casually mentioning something related to it, e.g. Some of the side quests are simple fetch quests, yes, but there are others which encourage you to explore naturally like the which I found very touching. One of BotW's greatest strengths is that points of interest are not revealed to you in the map, but rather the game directs you to them through either the NPCs or it silently guides you to them through game design. That's why I personally saw the towers more like the maps that the fish draw for you in Wind Waker rather than Ubi Towers. Only the outline of the area is revealed to you, but you have to find any points of interest yourself. There's something about scouting out shrines, stables and towns yourself from a high vantage point that makes exploration so much more rewarding.

Still haven't finished Odyssey (I think I'm at the part where it supposedly gets better and better), but BotW is still my GotY for now. Nothing I've played this year has matched the feeling that BotW gave me when playing it, and I had serious post-game depression after completing it where nothing else felt fun or engaging for months. I'll be very impressed if Odyssey matches or surpasses that kind of experience once I'm done with it, but if any game is going to do it, it will probably be Odyssey. Persona 5 is a great game, but I felt the pacing wasn't that good. I had to drag myself across the half way-ish mark, but it eventually picked up for me towards the end, so I'm glad I finished it. I'm going to play NieR after I'm done with Odyssey, so that could be another GotY contender for me too.

Kyle and Ian may vote for BotW, but maybe they'll be more enamoured with Odyssey? I have no idea what everyone else will vote for. BotW and Odyssey probably have the biggest chance. I'm happy that BotW and Persona 5 released earlier on in the year. It will give them time to chew on both of those games' pros and cons. They kind of touched on that a bit with BotW's dungeons in today's Frame Trap. Distance allows you to really consider how you feel about a game.

Thread 52 Games. 1 Year. 2018.
. Figured I'd do monthly updates. Here's my January update: 1. I pushed this to the front of my backlog as the servers are going down soon. I finished the main missions/beat the game and collected all of the dusty token rewards. I still plan to go back to the game now and again to complete some side quests that I missed, but for now I'm going to focus on finishing some other games before the GOTY season is over. I really enjoyed my time with the game, and hope that against all odds, we see another game in the franchise in the future. 2. I... really didn't enjoy this. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it a little bit more if I had gone into it 100% blind, but I don't think it would have made a significant difference. I felt the writing was poor, even by visual novel standards. And it handled the delicate subject matter with as much tact as a bull in a china shop. It was so over the top that I didn't even find it creepy, just comical (and I'm someone who is creeped out fairly easily). And that's when I wasn't just flat out bored. Although it does have some interesting and clever ideas, but overall, I felt it was incredibly shallow. It's free and pretty short, so I guess can't complain too much. 3. I loved this game a lot more than I thought I was going to at first. In fact it's currently in my top 5 games of 2017. I loved almost everything about it. The music (oh, the ), the loveable cast and the sense of responsibility you have over them, the setting and lore, the intensity of the Rites and all of the micromanaging involved between them. The more I played, the more attached I grew to the cast, and at times, the choices I had to make weighed heavily on my heart. I love that your choices matter, and that often, there really isn't a 'right' choice to make. It's always difficult. All in all, this was a fantastically unique game that will stick with me for some time. 4. A very short but enjoyable puzzle game that's bursting with creativity. There's not much I can say about this without spoiling it, but I will say that it's one of the most interesting (and beautiful) puzzle games that I have played. 5. - 21/01/2018 I was fooled somewhat by the anthropomorphic animal characters and cute art style. This game touched on a lot of difficult subjects, and I was left with a heavy heart when I finished it. Despite that, I really enjoyed my time with this game and had my fair share of laughs with it, too. I can see myself replaying it to get all of the doodles. I finished with 8 pages missing. 6. - 22/01/2018 Not much to say about this. It was... okay? I liked some aspects of it, but it was pretty mediocre all around. The Wolf Among Us and Tales From the Borderlands remain their best work, imo. 7. - 22/01/2018 I decided to buy Bastion and Transistor during the January sale since I fell in love with Pyre, and wanted to check out their earlier works. While I didn't enjoy it as much as Pyre, it was still an enjoyable game with great atmosphere, interesting use of narration and a great OST. 8. - 28/01/2018 As my first 2018 release, this game really did not disappoint. I went into Celeste knowing very little. A little bit about the subject matter of the game, and the basic mechanics outlined in the Nintendo Mini Direct. Oh, and that it was getting a lot of praise. Although I usually dislike having games hyped too much before getting a chance to play them, I'm thankful for it in this case. It wasn't really on my radar before then. Celeste is a beautiful, sweet, charming and challenging platformer that's bursting with creativity. The subject matter is one that hits close to home, so I did anticipate being emotionally invested, but the depth and charm of the characters took me by surprise. Although it can be challenging at times, it never felt overly frustrating for me. Whenever i stumbled, it simply felt like a learning experience. --- A lot of smaller games, but I've also made decent progress through some longer ones, which I should hopefully finish this month. Hopefully I can keep up the pace.

Let's be real, he's very charming, but he barely has a personality and doesn't even speak. I remember some people being critical of how Link barely reacted to things in cutscenes, too. Most of your ideas about him are meant to be left to interpretation. That's kind of the point of his character. I'm one of the people that would prefer to have playable female characters, and have well written female characters take a more prominent role, instead of Link himself being changed. However, I don't think Link's personality or the story is really a counter argument against those who would like to play as fem Link, though. I don't see what sets Link apart in this game compared to other 3D Zeldas. Apart from not being able to change your name, of course.

Are you trying to imply that women and men face sexual harassment or abuse at the same rate? Women face sexual harassment all the time. Even in situations where the person doesn't have authority over them. We get harassed just walking down the street. Of course sexually harassing men is wrong, no one argued otherwise. That's not what this thread is about, though. It's a critique about the constant sexual objectification we see when it comes to female characters in this medium. Also, the 'it's a fantasy world' argument is weak. Why is it that in these fantasy worlds, men are almost always dressed in a way that makes sense within that universe, and if they're wearing armour, it looks like it would actually protect them? And more often than not, the women in these worlds are wearing high heels even though it's impractical and uncomfortable for the situation (jumping, kicking, running), and are not wearing armour that would protect them in the same manner as the men? Oh, right. It's because it has nothing to do with it being fantasy and everything to do with making sure that female characters look sexy and attractive at all times, because that's the primary focus in their design, and the primary focus in them being there at all. To be eye candy.

I noticed that some people criticised XC2 for 'having its cake and eating it too'. This is an issue that Persona 5 has, as well. The game tries to promote justice for the outcasts of society, people that are normally too weak to fight back against the cruelty and prejudice in societies. Then it turns around and pokes fun at some of the most marginalised people in society, and presents them in a negative way for gags. And yeah, Ann being on the receiving end of so much sexual harassment after her arc was so stupid. It's okay now because it's coming from teenage boys? It's a shame that the trope of gay men and transgender women being some kind of predators is so common in shounen anime and manga, and apparently some JRPGs. It bothers me when people say that the people who are impacted by these things should just ignore them, since it's common in the genre and there are other things to like about the game. Particularly when its people who are in no way affected by these issues in real life (men, heterosexual people, etc.) that say this.

? I wasn't making a statement. Maybe a better question would be if the old OP is going to make the thread over here (or if they moved over). Sorry if questions like these are asked too often, just not sure on the protocol for these things.
