Thread Should a school record kids (6-12) internet history and send it to parents?
What sort of privacy do kids have on school computers nowadays? Back when I was in grade school the computer labs were fairly large and a teacher wandered around checking in constantly (and there were parental blocks). I have a hard time imagining kids looking up genuinely bad things in that environment (public + parental controls). Not that kids didn’t find and play flash games or watch YouTube, admittedly. Kids would presumably only look up questionable stuff on their own computer/phone/gaming whatever.

I was wondering what he was up to. He was in a TON of documentaries back in the day and his complete absence from stuff I’ve read and watched over the past few years made me a little worried. Maybe we’ll get lucky and there’ll be a great documentary about whatever it is. That Saqqara Tomb doc on Netflix was incredible (and ended with a cliff hanger).

I just don’t understand how you get to write a freaking JUSTICE LEAGUE MOVIE and this is the plot you go with. Out of all the plots you could shoot for. It feels like a C+ tier Elseworld story. Like, it’s not necessarily awful in practice if done well... but why bother? If it makes you feel better pretty much every beat of this plot was either copied from or reused in the various direct-to-video Justice League movies they’ve made and/or the Injustice games. Flashpoint Paradox is pretty good.

I know it means nothing as he was likely a pack-in with Joker or something, but I did find it odd that Mona was the only non-playable character in that picture that I saw. Just kinda sticks out as it seemed everyone else was playable. I wonder if they were ever going to do slightly more with the Persona party than background extras, or if he just likes Mona much. Thread Who struggled more in the transition to 3D? Game Freak or Sonic Team?
Young me LOVED Sonic Adventure 2, but it’s very clear that Sonic Team really struggled in figuring out how to do Sonic in 3D. Game Freak’s 3D strategy is the equivalence of if Sonic Team has made Sonic 4 on Dreamcast and it was just a new 2D Sonic game with CG graphics. Sun/Moon’s problem is they tried to both maintain the original Pokemon flavour and add in a big modern open world. That’s not an issue with 3D, it’s an issue with intent.

Thread Five-part documentary series "Playing with Power: The Nintendo Story" premiering on Crackle on March 1st
There were definitely some Japanese Nintendo employees interviewed on that Netflix videogame documentary, so I'm just hoping they're not listed here due to lack of name recognition (I imagine they did not get Miyamoto). If this good, maybe the team that make The Imagineering Story for Disney+ needs some work, because that's the sort of thing I'd want for a Nintendo doc.

I hope this is good. Like, really good. I want at least one entire episode that deals with them before gaming. Ideally it'd be something like: Episode 1: Before Gaming Episode 2: NES Episode 3: SNES Episode 4: N64/GCN Episode 5: Wii/Wii U/Switch Maybe Episode 3 could go in depth on Game Boy too? And presumably 3 or 4 would have to go into Pokemon. Honestly, I'm not sure what big historical stuff happened with the GCN and Wii U, even though I like both systems, to justify spending a lot of time there. It doesn't seem like the damage from the Wii U had any lasting effect. A little concerned it doesn't say they're interviewing anyone who's Japanese? Unless I missed it.

Thread I want to watch The Clone Wars but I don't want to watch the bad episodes, what do I do.
When Rebels is firing on all cylinders it's a sight to behold.I feel like my problem with Rebels was that for awhile it struggled getting tone right due to being aimed at a younger demographic. You can definitely do it right, looking at stuff like Gravity Falls, Over The Garden Wall, and Ducktales (2017), but Rebels took forever to figure out how to balance things, so you'd get these theoretically intense plots or ideas tossed out that often felt toothless in execution due to lack of budget or bad tonal shifts.

Thread I want to watch The Clone Wars but I don't want to watch the bad episodes, what do I do.
Personally, in terms of the canon cartoons, I'd say Clone Wars is allover the map in terms of quality but it's highs are REALLY high and it gets better and better with each season, Rebels is never as good or as bad but takes way longer to get amazing, and Resistance seems to be incredibly consistent at being 'that was ok' (though I haven't seen Season 2 yet). Once Season 3 hits in Clone Wars the only episodes that aren't great, if I recall, are ones that tried to do something utterly insane and didn't pull it off. I don't remember Rebels getting good outside of season premiers/ends until the Rogue One crossovers started happening, and even then only the last season got close to the highs of Clone Wars.

It is kind of confounding to me how misused Zeb and Chopper felt for much of the show. Chopper they eventually got working, but Zeb was simultaneously the ‘butt monkey’ and the tragic ‘last of his kind’ which never gelled well for me. I just wanted the poor guy to get a break. Thread This March marks one year of staying at home for a lot of people, how are you doing?
I work retail so we were only shut down for about two months or so. Half the store is acting like everything is normal and going out to eat and see movies and visiting friends and the other half has dubbed our actual lockdown as “the golden time” and look back on it nostalgically. I’m in the latter group, have only gone out for essentials (with one exception) and while I’m looking forward to movies and traveling once the pandemic is over, I’d also be thrilled to actually be able to WFH for the next six months. I will say that EVERYONE was absolutely thrilled to see each other again after the lockdown lifted and employees started coming back. We were and are absolutely pissed at the shoppers though.

Thread Era, I'm signing up for The Criterion Channel. Recommend me some movies.
Yes.Double yes. With the two GOATs covered, some deeper cuts from Criterion I adore: The Human Condition Trilogy (1959) Is it possible for man to be good? Is it possible for war to be just? An idealistic Japanese man is sent to Manchuria and determines he will run a slave labor camp in a morally right way. Things go poorly. Twenty-Four Eyes (1954) A new teacher watches as her students, and Japan, deal with the some of the most traumatic decades in modern history. Starts off as a cute family movie then spirals rapidly as things go from bad to worse. Kwaidan (1964) Do you like ghost stories? Do you like art? Well I got art all over your ghost stories, I hope you like them. Dawson City Frozen Time (2016) A bunch of old nitrate films found in a frozen pool tell the story of the twenty first century, America, and the creation and evolution of film itself. A Legend or Was It? (1963) What if Harakiri was a scathing rebuke of wartime civilian submissiveness to authority? And had female leads? Moonlight Serenade (1997) I saw it described as ‘Titanic but Japanese’ and it kinda is, an epic and sprawling historical drama about a family trying to go back to normal after WW2 (and spend a lot of time on a boat). Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees (1975) Do not look up anything just watch it. And just real quick recommendations: Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Thick Walled Room, Morning for the Osone Family, Fantastic Planet, Farewell to Dream, I Live In Fear, Narayama, Ugetsu, Dear Zachary, M, and Carnival of Souls.

The Space Invader being the symbol of gaming might wind up in a ‘floppy discs save icon’ situation in a bit, as I see Space Invaders showing up less and less in collections and arcades. I’d say that and Pac-Man Ghosts. The ghosts might ‘actually’ be more famous than Pac-Man. (And I think Koopas might be more recognisable than Goombas just because their design is more complex).

Thread Anime Is Booming. So Why Are Animators Living in Poverty?
Maybe? But that’d require them to be fluent in English for there to be openings. With stuff like Disney shutting down Blue Sky recently, there’s already a ton of US animators out of work. I would imagine that actually moving to the US and speaking fluent English with extensive animation in your resume would make it much easier to land a job when there are openings.Isn’t this also true of manga? I know it’s not quite as bad in the US but I see a lot of comics artists and writers on twitter basically say ‘the only reason to do this is because you love it because you do NOT get paid well for it.’

The smartest thing the criminals can do is just tie the dogs up in a park somewhere and then never speak of things again. If they try to collect the ransom they'll get caught, and if they do anything to hurt the dogs they'll be chased forever (if they won't already be with the whole pretty significant attempted murder thing). Thread Do you believe modern TV/shows (especially w/streaming) rely too heavily on "mystery box" writing?
There was definitely a wave of this to capitalize on Heroes/Lost but I feel like it's subsided a bit? Though each network seems to try again every year or so with some super vague quasi-genre thriller where the mystery is 'what is the plot even about.' It be done well but I feel like for a lot of shows they either don't think it through or don't have anything else going for them but the mystery. I feel like Netflix and other streamers usually put a big reveal right at the end of the first episode, so you know the biggest mystery of the box early and then work back from there. As opposed to each episode barely revealing anything.

I don’t watch ‘that’ many shows but I also can’t recall a streaming show make meta jokes about its binge as much as this one. There’s a great meta-continuity with a lot of jokes referring to stuff we saw a few episodes ago, knowing we saw them recently, that would never work on regular broadcast TV where the episodes might not be played in order (or binged).SAME!

Thread Were you aware of this BotW feature prior to the video upload?
I thought destructive weapons was a brilliant idea, personally, and adored it.That's the whole point. There's tons of systems in place and we don't have to use them in the original game because gear is often over powered. By making it less over powered you'd actually have to use game systems more and get more out of the game in return. Cold enviroment? Put on your best jacket but your health will still slowly drain if you're out too long, so hopefully you brought a lot of snacks to beef up your health killed a bunch of fire chu chus and can hold their jelly for warmth use your fire arrows on a tree to light it on fire and warm yourself take refuge in a cave to get out of the cold and explore inside for a bit collecting more food to keep going. Hot enviroment? Your cooling outfit has really poor defense and all your heavy weapons just make it worse. Time to get creative. Maybe find a big metal door to drag around with you for shade, collect bottles to store water in to cool off, maybe that ice wizzrobe staff will keep you cool if you use it as your main weapon, maybe the ice your wizzrobe staff will melt into small pools that you can cool off in.

Thread Were you aware of this BotW feature prior to the video upload?
Those systems exist because they're kinda the whole point of the game. If you're avoiding them you're kinda avoiding the reason the game exists as it is.Agreed. I'd tend to hoard 1 of every weapon I liked most and not use it until I found a duplicate. I'd also be ok if they allowed you to pick up broken weapons and get them repaired, if it made other people happy that there was a way to get weapons back eventually.

I had no idea. I know this might sound like blasphemy, but I kinda hope the sequel make clothing something that can be damaged/destroyed. A lot of the cool minutia of this game is never needed because you can eventually just get a coat or something that makes extreme temps irrelevant after a small bit of exploration. If clothing damage was a thing (or if clothing was simply not as strong against extreme weather) you'd wind up having to find ways of being more creative.

Thread Were you aware of this BotW feature prior to the video upload?
Yeah this makes sense. Like, the clothing should have some sort of drawback. It would make sense that even the warmest outfit wouldn't keep you safe from a blizzard forever, and that outfits for extreme heat would eventually deteriorate and need to be repaired. The fact that otherwise resources are not infinite would require and allow for more experimentation, as opposed to a 'I'll just keep doing this one thing over and over again' that could happen otherwise.

Thread Which Hyrule Warriors Game Was Better?
This is really hard for me. I love both but... The original had moments that just annoyed the crap out of me. Bosses that constantly repeated and were just repetitive to fight, really hard to figure out retro maps that didn't value the player's time, and if I recall didn't it take until the 3DS/Switch editions for you to be able to swap partners? Calamity has some really fun movesets and is super streamlined by comparison. I don't think I ever got frustrated at a level unless I went in knowingly underprepared/it glitched on me. That being said, it gets a little same-y quicker than the original did. I don't like how a lot of side missions limit you to one or two characters while Fire Emblem Warriors had nearly every mission available with not just a team of four but with back up units. I imagine my favorite would be the Switch edition of the original, but I only played the Wii U version.

Thread Which Nintendo series has been handled the WORST?
It's gotta be Star Fox, right? They canned a nearly complete sequel, have now done 2 (?) reboots of the same game instead of new stories, a bunch of really experimental games that moved away from why people liked the core games, etc. Pretty much all what the OP said. Paper Mario is a runner up but the series has altered so much with each entry it's hard to tell what a 'core' Paper Mario game is. F-Zero would probably be next but it kinda makes sense that Nintendo just doesn't feel a desire for two racing games even if they are super different. Metroid had a bump in the road with Other M/Federation Force but it was doing great before that and with Samus Returns and Prime 4 it should be back on track. Earthbound seemingly ended on it's own creator's terms and Mother 3 seems like it has a bunch of complicating factors for the West (but the series gets a ton of love in Smash Bros.). Yoshi and Donkey Kong are doing great, and have mostly been doing great since they started.

I remember disliking Gen3, liking Gen4/5/6, disliking 7, and liking 8... which feels like the opposite of everyone else? But it’s likely just nostalgia for most people. None of the Pokemon games are ‘bad’ so the only people who are going to care a lot about each generation are the people who liked it a lot.

The Ted Cruz thing is funny because it shows he understands Star Wars as much as he understands Watchmen or Avengers. Which is not at all.We still don't really know the timeline for things. Mando S2 was written before S1 premiered and before this became a bigger issue. It's possible they were already trying to phase her out, but were going to just try and ignore it and not acknowledge it, but she crossed a line and they had enough.I wouldn't think the writing would be that far along, considering it's still three series and over 1.5 years out minimum. If she was going to be the lead, that's trouble, admittedly, but it's not like they can't create a new character or borrow someone from the EU (Disney or otherwise). My impression is that they're saying they weren't going to be working her in the future anyways and after these posts they want to make that absolutely clear. It's not 'we fired her because of this' it's 'we hadn't renewed her contract and what she's saying is abhorrent so we never will.'

I’d do the nickel thing just cause Manson is an absolute asshole and I wouldn’t want to be associated with him in any way. I’m on the first choice for the other two. For people struggling over the grave thing, for anyone to care you’d have to argue that: 1. Ghosts are real. 2. Their souls are linked to their flesh cocoons and they actually know where they’re buried. 3. They would find it insulting. If ghosts ‘are’ real I don’t think they’d be linked to their bodies unless they were murdered in that spot and buried there, which I guess is fair for this example... but still. If they’re pissed off and haunt you all you have to do is solve their murder and it’ll be fine.

And as others have said Vader knows he’s not dead. I hope it’s somewhat more psychological though, like Hayden being the voice of doubt and failure since Obi lives with the guilt of letting all this happen to Anakin in the first place. This makes me wonder what’s going on with the writing of Mando. If they were looking for an excuse to fire her and ‘just’ found it, did the writers already know not to include her in scripts? I assume after the Rangers note they’d have known, I guess.Seems to be both. They were content not acknowledging her but she pushed it far enough they released a statement making it official. Worth noting that Mando S2 was written before S1 even aired, so they were likely limited in what they could do there.

I kinda figured/hoped they were going to drop her between seasons and hope they didn’t have to say anything, especially when they didn’t mention her during the Rangers thing.I feel like it’s easy enough to create a bunch of new Rebel characters to fill it in. They could even bring in the X-Wing pilot from Mando or characters related to the ST or Squadrons. It’d be great for a diverse cast, since they could also get some aliens in too.

That’s the issue at hand, though. ROMs do have legal owners that can shut down and/or sue preservation sites that just let anyone download them, killing the digital museum in the same way that loaning out all your (not clone-able right now) dinosaur bones would kill a physical one (well not the same way, but hopefully my point comes across).

I think the preservation/piracy divide would be easier to deal with if people actively preserving games for that purpose limited who had access to the ROMs in the same way museums don’t just let people walk home with dinosaur bones. Realistically the law needs to change and there needs to be organisations lobbying for changes that enforce preservation and accessibility. Gaming preservation is far more complex than for any other media and there has to be a big organisation that can take the reins on fixing it.
