Thread Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon: are you watching it today/tonight?
Watched it today, an okay film at best. This feels like a TV show condensed into one film, like an anime recap film. Which isn't a good thing. The pacing is not great, emotional beats don't have a lot of time to breath, and characters are not very deep with rushed arcs. Also fuck Disney and their homophobia. Though even if the film had embraced the sapphic subtext, I still wouldn't have cared for it much. Also the anachronous dialogue makes this feel like a DreamWorks film.

Thread What's the better Tomb Raider game out of these 3?
2013 has the best/least worst story if only for the lesbian (sub)text. There is nothing heterosexual about this. In terms of game design, I feel 2013 is the best at borrowing from Uncharted while also doing its own thing. I flip flop on whether Rise or Shadow is better out of those two, since they both have their faults. I'd have to give Shadow the edge for having better DLC tombs and overall game design.

I hope people playing this for the first time learn to love the Sealed Verses. They kick so much ass and are way better than the watered down Pod Programs in Automata. If the amount of blood can be turned back to 11, there's a lot to enjoy in NieR Replicant's combat assuming the tweaks don't make it feel really off.Yeah there's subtle detail being lost, largely due to the shift to less cartoony facial models.

It'll be easier to compare when the game is out but it wouldn't be absurd for them to use that as the base. It's Yoshida's redesign of the outfit and it matches his new key art for older Nier. Of course it's clearly not just a simple copy paste as there are various tweaks, plus looking at the trailer there is probably a more complex model for the cutscenes.

Goddamn, I forgot how many plot beats the attract gives away. The English audio is really compressed and it doesn't look like they are improving the facial animation any. The lip synch is not great. I'm warming up to the new character model faces though. Edit: Silly me, the voiceovers aren't meant to line up with the scenes.

Cars and furniture stick out the most to me in third person games. If there's furniture for sitting, I will spend a bit of brain power pondering how the character model would look sitting down if they even can. In Final Fantasy 7R, the Shinra headquarters is one of the best looking sections of the game but the furniture is way out of scale. In Resident Evil 3R, it's impossible for Jill or anyone to fit into the cars.

I think it's plausible, they wouldn't really need to make much in terms of new assets. It's possible for DLC to be made without it taking away resources from the next game in the saga. I just want one game in the series with a happy ending for queer women and then the series can go in any other direction Deck Nine wants. Intersex is the proper, humane term. Also intersex people are cis if they align with the gender assigned to them at birth, which appears to be the case for that character. There's nothing inherently trans/non-binary about being intersex.

You're definitely right that they got some of the weakest routes, though I'd say Hijiyama's is the worst since Ogata had some interesting scenes even if they didn't mean much in the end. The loop and puzzles for Hijiyama feels really half-baked. Did anyone else happen to lookup DD-426 on Google and see it is the designation for a US destroyer that was involved in WWII? Though it wasn't part of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, so probably just be a coincidence.

You're right for bringing up that pronouns != gender identity, and since I wasn't clear I read him as non-binary too. I don't find him to be super egregious (like Luka from Steins;Gate) but I think that's thanks to the localization smoothing things out as much as they could. Oh yeah, I definitely agree that them not clearly being a couple yet in the epilogue is total bullshit. Especially given how overwhelmingly heteronormative the epilogue is. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it's clearer he is just teasing Hijiyama in the Japanese script about his virtual body. Speaking of heteronormativity, the script teasing Fuyusaka as bi after one of the battles annoys me greatly.

The game has some important plot points that get weirdly glazed over. For instance, the Sentinels being infected by DD-426 gets resolved off screen in a convoluted manner and you only learn how through the mystery files. Then there's the matter of Minami holding the D-Code key which doesn't matter in the end and makes Ogata's route kind of pointless. Also how did both Sekigahara and Shinonome get their minds stabilized by the end?Just finished the game and the ending bothered me for a number of reasons, especially this. I'm really curious how the localization for that scene differs from the Japanese script. I really don't know how to feel about Okino, since he almost squarely falls into the "trans coded character that is really just a feminine gay man" trope. I imagine the localization team attempted to smooth out that unfortunate aspect of Okino's character, but not much they apparently could do about Okino adopting a female body while they are visiting the simulation in the epilogue. WTF is even the point of that? It's not like that would change anything outside the simulation, just another way for him to tease Hijiyama and try to woo him. To me it seems like the localization tries to paint Okino as non-binary but they couldn't fix the fundamental problem. It doesn't help that Okino is probably the least developed character and Hijiyama's route is really weak.

That's unfortunate he shows up in Lost Legacy. Guess they really wanted to reuse the character model and everything. I kind of figure Druckmann's favoritism for Troy Baker after TLOU is probably why Sam Drake came into existence. (I figure Druckmann knew Baker wouldn't have a large role in TLOUII and thus wanted this opportunity to work with him fully.) In a better world, Uncharted 4 would have been Nathan and Elena going on one final journey together. Then again, as Druckmann has said in at least one interview he doesn't consider himself to be good at writing romance.

No, that is a misrepresentation of Elena at the beginning of Uncharted 4. It's the opposite, she encourages him to take a somewhat risky job offer only for him to go behind her back and go on a full blown adventure with Sam. At most she can be reduced to being the supportive wife. It's Nathan that tries to deceive himself and what his wants really are. That's his biggest character flaw throughout the whole series, honesty with himself and those he cares about.

Source So apparently Yoko Taro made Kaine intersex (honestly there's nothing to be gained by treating it as a spoiler) as a result of women on the team asking for a "male heroine." Her tasteless outfit was the result of the pervy character designer being told to draw a woman that had the left side of her body covered and was feminine. All the initial designs had her in lingerie which "shocked" Taro but he liked the "contrast" and pushed for the final design, despite other people on the team having hesitation.

Yeah, I know the AT&T's internal situation was affecting everything for a time. Since the showrunner already has a plan for S3, pre-production should be quicker than for the previous episode order. The emphasis on Naoki "The Man Who Saved XIV" Yoshida as producer and then giving Hiroshi Takai equal credit (in this context) for XIV is suspect. Takai was one of three assistant directors of XIV 2.0 and wasn't even a main staff member for Stormblood. Maybe I'm just trying too hard to read between the lines. With the history behind the development of XV, I can see why SE would really want to prop up Takai.

"Beloved" isn't the term I would use, since one's relationship with the series can be rather complicated. Tell Me Why has a completely different, to my knowledge, creative team. I think it best if we don't further bring LiS and its (potential) baggage into this thread. (Partly my bad.) After one season? I don't know how Disney TVA productions work but I get the impression that perhaps S2 wasn't greenlit from the getgo and thus some people were already lining up other jobs. The head writer, Rachel Vine, potentially moving on after one season is worrisome. She has a "story by" credit for every episode. Some storyboard artists moving on is normal to me but not that.Molly Ostertag is credited as a staff writer so she was in the writer's room. She has "story by" credits for 5 episodes, "teleplay by" for 2. Looks like Charley Feldman, another staff writer, is gone after S1.

I've been playing a lot of Valkyria Chronicles 4 lately and while I will never stop liking the core gameplay, I'm just so done with the sexism in the series. 4 is way worse than the first game and I never even touched the PSP games, which I imagine embraced the PSP/Vita otaku audience. It's not even the fanservice that truly bothers me but the roles that women and girls play in the story, particularly the Valkyria and their utter lack of agency. Two important (and underdeveloped) romances in the game revolve around the man being a sexist creep (Raz and Walz) and the love interest (Kai and Crymaria, respectively) putting up with it until they reciprocate. Raz is the worst of the two because his sexual harassment of Kai and general views on women are basically waved away because he's a man. Walz not respecting Crymaria's physical boundaries is pretty damn bad and hard to watch during a particular scene, even if it is contextualized in a non sexual way. Then there's Nikola and Chiara, whose designs and bare minimum characterization, exist to cater to a certain subset of the audience. Not to mention the implicit abuse and grooming they underwent at the hands of the lead villain. :| I don't know where I'm going with this but if the series is dead after 4, I'm okay with that.

The fact that you have to watch that to partially unlock the true ending says something about the creative team. Yeah the cartoon sexism and "feminism" there is really bad, though I didn't mind the gag with Minerva covering Riley since it fits her character. Would have been slightly better if Riley fully knew she was naked and didn't give a fuck. Speaking of Riley, she's basically a nuclear physicist but of course she has to be cute and a little ditzy. (As well as the protagonist's love interest.) How they try to justify the non-standard winter outfits for the primary women is quite laughable. Minerva having a skirt period doesn't fit her character, and I knew the game was going to be bad in that regard as soon as I saw the back of Kai's gear. There's at least one or two serious cutscenes where her ass is in the frame for no fucking reason. (Well, I know why.) I find it really funny (sad) that you can't look up skirts in the character model viewer but you can get unintentional panty shots during gameplay because the physics applied to skirts are borked while crawling and during ragdoll moments. Nothing like seeing Minerva gunned down or bombed to near death with her skirt glitching out.

The model viewer in Resident Evil 3 is extremely comical. Jill has breast physics in the remake, which you won't notice during normal gameplay at all. Pretty much every important character and Nemesis has some degree of physics applied to hair, some fabric and/or tactical equipment to add some dynamicness to motion. When you turn models in the viewer the physics are cranked up massively leading to very exaggerated effects. It's not a knock on the game itself, but it would appear someone on the team had some fun with model viewer settings or it's a glitch. Carlos has breast jiggle in the form of pouches. XD

I want what Part III to be what Part II was mostly advertised to be, Ellie's story. I can't be the only lesbian burned by the bait-and-switch that Druckmann and Gross pulled here. Ellie's story isn't over and what Part II puts her through and then where it ultimately leaves her is tragic and unsatisfying in way that is a tad cruel. I can't trust Druckmann, shouldn't have in the first place, so he would need to find a lesbian or bi/pan woman to lead the narrative for Part III to convince me to give it a shot should it come to fruition. That said, it can't just be Ellie's story since I think Dina deserves a bigger role. She doesn't have the happiest background either even prior to Part II. Also Part II didn't do enough, in my opinion, to flesh her out as a character. She's quite capable herself when it comes to danger, so she could easily be a playable character as well. Since Part II introduced Lev I don't think it would be fair to transmasc players to not include him in some capacity, which means Abby would also have to be involved in the story as well.

Outside of indie games, this is a tall order. One of my go-to recs for wlw content is the indie visual novel Hearts of the Woods. Congrats Neil and Halley, you did what you set out to do. *shakes head* Even knowing some spoilers, the story is still pretty damn potent. I'll give them that. That said I do not love it. Not in the least. They just had to subject Ellie to more trauma and ultimately left her as even more of a broken person. After the first game I really wanted a sequel dedicated to Ellie and they couldn't even deliver that, since Abby is given near or equal focus and importance. I don't hate her, just wish she wasn't retconned into existence in order to be the catalyst for the story, among other things. I'm going to be counting on fan fic writers to do better by Ellie and Dina, as well as characters like Jesse, Lev, and Yara.

This one is particularly illuminating.Apparently "Princess Prom" in S1 didn't go over well with some exec(s), particularly Catra and Adora's dance. I very much get the feeling she gained more bargaining power at some point during production and/or supportive execs emerged. There's a clear dividing line between the last season and the rest of the show in terms of what they could do.

Thread It just hit hit me it's Pride month and we are about to get a Major AAA game staring a unambiguously Gay main character.
The original release date was going to dodge June, so it's only because of the pandemic and leaks that we are getting it during Pride. Corporations don't tend to release queer media in June. Regardless, as a lesbian I'm fucking excited though tapering my expectations. While I'm quite fond of it myself, it's not the happiest experience and requires some content warnings. One game I can't recommend enough is the indie visual novel Heaven Will Be Mine. It's pretty much made by and for sapphic (trans) women, with a diverse cast.

Candace feud reignited needs to happen at some point. Candace is probably the only woman on the roster that I've seen that has great in-ring chemistry with her.

*sigh* Even if they had added them, they probably would have been tiny as fuck. That seems like a relatively easy issue to fix by the modding community, depending on how accessible the video files are. Someone just needs to swap in some with hardcoded subs. Though SEGA could do that themselves. :|

Thread Thoughts on Ethan Winters from Resident Evil 7?
Well, duh. He's suppose to be an everyman like the protagonists of many horror films that RE7 draws from. The game and story wouldn't have worked with a classic character as the protagonist, all things equal. *frustration intensifies*

Thread Thoughts on Ethan Winters from Resident Evil 7?
He was perfectly fine for the role he played and the kind of story RE7 told. Not every RE protagonist needs to be a cartoon character.Nah, since she is in the custody of Blue Umbrella/BSAA she'll be an asset in pursuing The Connections.

Thread [IGN] 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim trailer. And release date
I'm not big on Vanillaware but VN plus mecha tower defense is an interesting concept. How horny is George Kamitani in this game? The story trailer has groan worthy aspects like the girl running with toast in her mouth and then falling to expose a panty shot, along with the obligatory busty teacher/scientist holding her arms under her breasts in a way that no woman actually does.

Not as good of a reveal as VII's but that is hard to top. Really, really hoping Mia doesn't get friged but the alternative will likely be convoluted. It's rather weird that they don't have a 60 FPS trailers.

Don't know but it has native Windows support and it was in use for so long, so I'd assume mods are possible. It's owned by EA but the documentation is probably out there for the different versions of the engine. Max Payne 2 used it and there mods for that, as well as others I presume.

Thread In some 6 months, Resident Evil 3 remake was announced, released and forgotten
It was the most blockbuster Resident Evil game since 6 and fulfilled that role. Personally I enjoyed it and got my money's worth but it won't have the lasting impact of VII or 2R, to a lesser extent.

I hope not. Chronicles X in general is closer to the Xenosaga series in terms of aesthetic and X is completely unrelated to mainline Chronicles, I believe.

One thing I hate about both RE2 and RE3 is that you can't access the menu during the long drawn out death animations. It's really frustrating when I know I fucked up but have to sit through a long animation to reload my save. I presume it has to due with the dynamic difficulty system, otherwise I can't understand why they do that.I need this version of Jill to carry over into future games. I'm hoping that post credits tease ties into a future game set post VII.

Another nitpick I have with the game is that there isn't a proper sequence/explanation for Jill gearing up. She picks up that G19 from the dead cop and then she magically has her tactical gear on when that zombie breaks out of the bar. Kind of a glaring oversight when they could have waited until she reaches the subway. Hell, she could have obtained the new gear from Brad. I hope one day we get a clearer look at what all transpired during the development of RE2 and 3.

I finished my normal playthrough on nightmare, took quite a few attempts and both defense coins but I beat that son of a bitch. Now I'm doing an S rank runk on nightmare using all the coins, extra pouches, and the infinite assault rifle. Should be a breeze until the final boss. :|

Yeah, that seems to be the case which is good I suppose for speed runs but they are rare to find and hard to make. The game actually tells you that flame rounds are best for Nemesis, at least starting with stage 2. The way the game throws explosive rounds at you left and round confuses me. I wish they put all the tips from the loading screens under tutorials since I can't read 75% of them, because of my SSD.

I guess I'll test it more thoroughly on nightmare whether acid rounds really do more damage to Hunter Betas. On hardcore it takes two rounds, if they don't dodge. I only did that once because three shotgun blasts to the head does the trick better. The main advantage with acid rounds is it stunning them for a while as they convulse.

I'm expecting disappointment tomorrow, so setting my expectations rather low. It's not even just the queer elements I'm worried about, there's a lot that needs to be accomplished within 13 episodes. Thus far, the team hasn't had the best batting average in terms of economical storytelling. I don't even ship Catra and Adora at this point but I want some bold and explicit queer rep by the end. The fact that something like Netossa and Spinnerella being a couple, let alone married per the Word of God, isn't explicit indicates to me there is a limit to what they can do. It's not that the queer elements are below textual, they are just obfuscated to a degree. It's 2020 and after the entirety of Steven Universe, Adventure Time's finale, and such I want better. Progress is being made but there is still so much left to do.
