Thread Hollywood Reporter: Dave Chappelle Slams Michael Jackson Accusers and "Cancel Culture" in Netflix Special
"If you had just heard the modulation of his fake chinese accent when he compared being trans to him being chinese, you'd understand he meant no harm" I just don't see the point in bending over backwards to be charitable to Chapelle when what he's doing is as dim as it is. You can hand wave one or two things if you really want but there's a whole special of it. Two specials of it actually.

I'm sorry to be the first to inform you that stanning transphobic garbage is going to attract a sideeye or two from transpeople. It's really not that hard a concept that words have meaning, hardly a secret. Go ahead and call it a character flaw of mine, justify it however you want as long as you spare me the same phony rhetoric that bigotted garbage is somehow something other than bigotted garbage if it's on a stage and told as a joke.

I'm trans and bisexual, I guess things are different for me because there isn't really any hiding who I am. I wouldn't feel comfortable being out in the environment you're in. You obviously have to work and sometimes we can't choose these things but I'd at least make it a long term goal to find work somewhere more accepting because while people like that may rise to the challenge a little if given the chance, I don't think I personally would ever feel comfortable there knowing they're trash. Im sorry you have to deal with that dude.

Thread What is the best Alien film after the first two?
I think that Alien 3 is significantly better than Resurrection if only because it at least feels like it exists within the same framework as the first two movies, whereas Resurrection just feels like such a different kind of thing. I think the actual answer is probably Prometheus though. There's PLENTY to nitpick in all four movies after Aliens, but the most important part of Alien is atmosphere, and Alien 3, Prometheus, and Covenant at least don't shatter that. I'd say Prometheus works for me more than any just for the sheer spectacle of it.

Thread What’s the best decision you ever made in your life?
Whenever I try to look at my life like that I can never really come up with anything. It always feels like my life is one small decision after the other that was built up over time. For example, I ended up in University via community college via night school via dropping out of high school. I’ve had two big life changes in the last year and a half, my girlfriend and my job. I don’t want to jinx the job by announcing it’s been a big life change as I’ve only been there a year, who knows if I’ll fuck it up. The girlfriend has been a super positive impact in my life, but again, I don’t even know how I got her so I’m just thankful in general I guess.

Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country 1 in particular are so calming to play for me, the feeling of jumping on multiple enemies or plowing through a level without losing momentum is such a relaxing feeling. This was a LEGO Ideas set, it was created by a fan and won a contest to essentially be put in front of a panel of judges who see if it's actually viable to sell / possible to license, then it's tweaked and turned into a finalized set. So if it's your dream to see a set like that, you should submit it! I'm not sure what the LEGO rules are around alcohol, I believe it's mostly literal war themes that are risque. I think a set like Cheers could theoretically pass (although I'm unsure if there's enough support out there) in the same way Star Wars or Overwatch get a pass, they're about a thing but not really about a thing. Anyway, I hate Friends and I have to admit I'm little bummed this really took up an IDEAS slot but I'm trying to be happy for those who are happy, : ) .

I can't really agree with people that recc. The Orville. To each their own but I find the Seth Mcfarlane humor really off putting. The whole "my first officer is my ex wife" plot is really boring, honestly to the point that I find it almost insulting to the viewers intelligence. TNG and it's ilk are built upon taking topical matters and talking about them through sci-fi, but I also gotta say I found the trans episode extremely uncomfortable and it seems like Mcfarlane is just way out of touch with the world.

Super Mario World 3, if only because it's my earliest memory of a desert in a video game. The angry sun is classic. Thread This Generation of Consoles versus Last Generation
Hard to say until this generation is actually dead and buried. The Playstation 3 had some serious heavy hitters in it's last two years. This is a strange way of thinking of it, but if we were to cut the two hardware generations lifespans into a first half and a second half It would go: 8's Second Half > 7 > 8's First Half. But also, I think certain genres have done better in other generations. I feel like FPS games have waned quite a bit this generation, and I also find myself missing Bethesda and Bioware's renditions of the WRPG from previous generations. JRPGs have waned as far as ""AAA"" games are concerned, but are thriving with Indies and whatever we're calling that not-quite-indie-not-quite-AAA part of the market. 7th gen was in many ways the rise of indies, but with 8th it's business as usual. Not sure how to compare the two. It's tough to say because a lot of developers and franchises that were missing strong releases are starting to reemerge. Capcom came out in the second half and Square could pull things out in the end with FF7:R.

Thread High school drop out-Era
Hey there! I was a high school drop out! Have a bachelors degree now and working an office job that is about as happy as can reasonably be expected. I went to a private catholic school for three years, always a D to F student, passing just barely enough classes to retake two in summer and retake others the next year, just barely keeping up enough to not stay back. I could go into why this was the case but, closet gay, closet trans, Catholic school, etc. You get the idea. They kicked me out after my junior year, which they would do a lot to keep their "99% of our students go on to college" statistic in check, etc. I had also clashed a bit with staff. After that I went to public school my senior year, everything was new, couldn't handle it. Pretty much started skipping all my classes and never going. I had lots of friends but I was spending most of my nights on the internet and sleeping through the days, and my parents never questioned my lies when I covered things up as they were dealing with their own shit. So I dropped out in the second semester. After high school I went straight into night school the next year, this was probably around the time my life started getting better. Still depressed but with things being easier and getting little victories in school, I started caring more and getting good grades, which was also the case whenever I went to summer school, basically a wake-up moment. Then community college for three years. Then I managed to get into a modest but actual four year school. Started getting to do the things I wanted to do with my life. Came out as trans and gay. Started living. Graduated. Had some bad jobs, had some good jobs. For the first time I have a girlfriend I've been with for longer than 6 months, and I'm happy. Work still feels like a grind, but it's one I can live doing everyday. What's really crazy about it is I still to this day have dreams about being a high school or college fuck up. Things in my life are better and I'm really glad to be out of that state of my life, but it stays with you.

It really depends on the place. Black skinny jeans are PROBABLY fine but there are some places that are just total sticklers about that kind of thing and even though it's totally the norm now it just will never be OK in that locale. I think paradoxically it's less professional places like retail, etc, that are going to be really "NO EXCEPTIONS" on jeans, everywhere else it basically comes down to if you look clean and professional or not and the fabric of the pants isn't going to matter or be scrutinized. I basically wear nothing but long open sweaters w/ tunics and shirts and skinny jeans and leggings and it's always been fine and pretty much the norm.I'm now imagining you wear business jncos

There's no way in hell that Hopper is dead as others have said. If you don't see the killing blow, it didn't happen, or they at least want to keep the door open and haven't decided yet. Also, did they ever explain what the green goop was? Edit: I literally just finished watching 30 minutes ago so I'm still sitting and contemplating the finale but I'd like to also say I find it a tad bit frustrating that they "redeemed" Billy in the end when he was shown to be a racist in the second season. Not as bad as Three Billboards, etc, but it annoys me the way a daring sacrifice in the end and a troubled childhood handwaves away a character whose primary attribute the previous season was being a horrible violent racist. I'm not saying that characters like that can't have complicated plots that make them three dimensional characters but I feel like it's shitty to give him a daring sacrifice sendoff without having ever addressed the fact that he was a bigot.

I might put ORAS over Sun and Moon, but never X and Y. X and Y are the still the low point of the series to me, Sun and Moon were significantly more entertaining to me. Edit: To elaborate too, X & Y were fine, but there has to be a least favorite and for me it's easily this gen.

Thread Would you own a pitbull as a family pet while having small children?
A Pitbull that I raised as a puppy, absolutely. A rescue? Maybe on my own, but probably not with children involved. This is an uncomfortable story for me to share but I see these threads with a lot of mixed emotion and figured maybe I'll just share it this time. I have a rescue pitbull who I love and adore, named Roxie but at one point I had two. Roxie is the most non-aggressive dog I've ever had and is an absolute sweetheart, and I trust her as much as I'd trust any other well trained dog. The other dog, Marshall had major aggression issues and would attack anyone who entered the house. We had so much good experience with the first dog, we thought we could handle the second. Long story short, my family wasn't well equipped to deal with the issues we had with the dog at all. The agency we rescued with had an arrangement that if you rescued the dog from them you couldn't give them away or euthanize them if issues occurred, they had to be returned back to the agency. Well, we had Marshall for years and I loved him to death, but a lot of shit happened. He bit one of my friends and drew blood, and while walking him on leash with my father on a hiking trail he got free and bit a horse, throwing the rider off it's back resulting in the women breaking her leg, my family was sued for the medical expenses. Another day, he jumped on the couch to snuggle with two of my younger cousins and everything was fine, until someone made a sudden movement he couldn't see and he snapped and bit my cousin on the face, she was okay but it was severe enough that she was bleeding. It was honestly a really terrifying ordeal. We loved this dog as much as any other dog we had ever had and it was traumatic for me, he was an angel with our family but he was a different animal when other people got close to us, and despite all my families attempts to train we couldn't make it stop. When I left for college and my parents divorced, it got even worse. My mother made the hard decision after years to try and return the dog to the agency and told them what happened and that we couldn't take care of the dog anymore, but after hearing about the bites they refused to take him back despite everything that had been said and agreed previously. Marshall ended up being put to sleep. II'm hesitant to share my experiences because frankly I still feel shame that I let my family put the dog down despite everything, and because I don't want to be called a fear monger. Because of what we humans do to these animals there are a lot of tortured abused animals out there in shelters that need homes like any other dog, I just believe they aren't good fits for families that aren't equipped to handle them. A lot of those dogs are pit bulls. Anyway here's a picture of my potato-puppy Roxie.

Thread Anyone else starting to think about their game of the decade list?
To name a few, - Halo Reach, the last great Halo game and the last great console shooter of the console generation for me. - The Last of Us, another end of the console generation but on the other platform, and one of Naughty Dogs finest. - Dark Souls, either this or Bloodborne. My gut says Dark Souls after weighing in how influential this game was and how iconic the map was for me. - Minecraft, most hours spent. - Super Mario Odyssey, Just a delight. - Mario Kart 8, considering the hours spent on both Wii U and Switch - Doom, best PC shooter, best return of a franchise - Nier Automata, i cry everytime - Undertale, same This list is sorely missing indie games and I go back in forth in my mind with how I weight those games with ""AAA"" games. Minecraft and Undertale are on the short list at least. The lack of traditional WRPG and JRPGs is both a bit of a shock reflecting on things. I don't think this decade was as great for RPGs as the one before it.

Somewhere in the thick of things there's a debate to be had about how responsible the entire body of a company is for shit like this, sure, but it surely does not start and end with one individual. This does not occur over and over again in a vacuum. Also, it isn't exclusive to CD Projekt Red, this is the culture at large.

This one is kinda case sensitive for me honestly, interested to hear how other people feel. I personally have and do call other women dude, but I probably shouldn't. When someone calls me dude and I'm unsure if they're clocking me as trans or not irl it makes me anxious and overall makes me feel bad. Most of the time, probably 99% of the time it isn't malicious, but has it made me feel bad? Yeah. To me it's a small potatoes thing but if we're talking about it, that's how I feel. It isn't COD4 or Skyrim as games of their ilk were inevitable, Online first person shooters and open world RPGs were not going anywhere and one will always stand above the rest. I have a lot of feelings about that episode. I feel like they more or less did as well as they could with what the previous episodes had cornered them into. I really do find Arya and Jamie utterly baffling in this episode and it's a bummer watching Tyrion go against everything his character stands for and also now he's a damn narc on top of that. The cinematography was absolutely stunning as usual and the actors perform there roles damn well but there's only so much "war is hell' cinema they can throw at us before it all washes off as the same. I'm sick of battle scenes, and that's a damn shame because when they were used sparingly there sure were a treat.

Thread Sega says the Sega Ages games are doing better than expected outside of Japan
What a welcome change, I'm curious as to how we got here. It feels like for the longest time being interested in retro games meant the Nintendo and Super Nintendo and not much else. More and more it feels like systems like the Mega Drive and Master System or even the TurboGrafx-16, Neo Geo, etc are getting more and more enthusiasm from a bigger audience. I wonder what the main contributors for this might be. My first thought is the increase in indie games that point back to a lot of these originals. Another thought is emulation but I feel like if that were the biggest contributing factor interest in these kind of games would have arrived well before now. Maybe it's just that as mainstream audiences become more and more familiar with video games the enthusiasts are burrowing more and more into niche? SEGA is hardly niche, but nicher than say, Nintendo.

1. The Death Penalty is legal in the United States, we know. There are a large chunk of those that view the death penalty as ethical that find abortion unethical, and both are legal. Yes, the definition of murder is unlawful killing, but arguing about the definition of murder is pedantic. Honestly why are you wasting your breath arguing about the legality when we're debating the ethics of that law? 2 and 3. Wrongfully killing any innocent life is unethical. I don't think killing anyone guilty is ethical either, but even removing that from the equation, we kill innocent people in the United States. You say it's unethical for extremely dangerous people to be mixed with the general prison population as if there are no other alternatives. Which is silly. There are a million different solutions including putting violent dangerous criminals in a separate population (Hey, we already do this!) or we reform how incarceration works altogether and find something amicable that minimizes risk of everyday Americans while y'know, not throwing lives away frivolously.

Thor seeds parts of Captain America. The Tesserect, etc. But regardless, speaking broadly (not just the MCU) deciding to watch something chronologically is rarely ever illuminating, you're often removing any sense of intruige or pace to whatever it is you're viewing. The author or creators released them in an order for a reason. Viewing chronologically at best you're doing no harm, at worst you're removing any kind of cohesion the source was trying to create.

What I said was, there are plenty of ways to express their love of games without violating copyright law. In example, by creating indie games that don't violate copyright law. In a sense I think creating fan games is kinda punk rock and I think it's cool, but I just don't see the point in villainizing Nintendo when they're pretty much acting extremely in character.

Thread Clearing some misconceptions, or Nintendo should be as nice to their fans as SEGA and Capcom are
There are plenty of ways that ultra-talented fans can express their fandom and talent and passion for games without violating copyright law. In a sense I'm playing devil's advocate here as I would prefer that Nintendo relax on these things as well but I can't in good faith call it shocking that they choose to play these things conservatively. There are naturally going to be companies that find their niche being the cool ones but companies like Nintendo that put an extreme amount of effort into maintaining the brand are gonna exercise every right they can legally to protect said brand. It's historically been difficult for Nintendo to hand properties off to smaller dev teams or western teams within their own company let alone welcome a fan game in open arms. It is not their way and never has been, your time would be better spent asking rain not to be wet.

I believe that it's in these companies best interests to lean into fan works rather than lean out, however. I just think it's a bit entitled to bark at Nintendo or any other developer about this sort of thing. They're creating games that fans love and while I may personally think of these fan games and fan content as celebrations of the original, it's hardly fair to cry out if a company thinks of this stuff as a direct competition directly siphoning off their own intellectual property and hard work.

Thread Do you think Nintendo has a GOTY in their cards?
In 2019? Large sweeping adventure games like Horizon or Breath of the Wild. These kind of games are fantastic and invaluable but fun casual games, niche games, and platformers are invaluable too. Sony is organized specifically to output games like the ones I described, every year. Nintendo can shake things up with Mario and Zelda, but not every year. Not proposing anything controversial, just that games like Animal Crossing and Mario Maker are undervalued, and that's fine.

I'm not genuinely comparing the two. I'm attempting to highlight that the poor rhetoric used to critique Days Gone creates false equivalencies like the comparison of the two. If we are to believe that Days Gone's fatal flaw is that "zombies are tired" it invites this poor comparison. The objective of the thread is to sharpen the rhetoric we use when critiquing games like Days Gone, not to literally put two games on a scale and weight them.

Thread Why is Days Gone a tired zombie premise in the minds of many when Resident Evil 2 is not?
Pretty much. Resident Evil 2 is currently sitting as the highest rated game of 2019 on Open Critic, and it's not undeserved. We don't know how Days Gone is going to turn out but it's obvious there is a genre fatigue of sorts clouding it's release, I just feel like summarizing it as "another zombie game" doesn't go far enough to describe why this game isn't resonating, but has become the shorthand for a series of other checkboxes this game is or isn't hitting.

I think the major city / country angle might be part of it for sure. I find it interesting you cite RE's non-zombie enemies. I usually hate those in most games and always get a little "bleh" on RE when the monsters start to just become organic matter with giant eyes poking out everywhere, although RE2 bucks my opinion on this with some really strong enemy design.

Thread Why is Days Gone a tired zombie premise in the minds of many when Resident Evil 2 is not?
I suppose this could be considered a false equivalency of sorts, but it's one I'm interested in tugging at nevertheless. You don't have to look too hard to hear people pipping up about their lack of interest in Days Gone, how zombie games are played out and that it's a tired trope at this point. People have been harping on this since the games earliest trailers, and yet, Resident Evil 2 came and went without any of the same sentiment. I'm curious as to what it is exactly that causes this. I myself am currently working through Resident Evil 2 and am absolutely in love with it, but when I hear of Days Gone I get the feeling that it might end up a solid game, but I just can't find the urgency to play it. Is it because Resident Evil 2 is just objectively better? Is it because Days Gone is open world? Is Days Gone too close to The Walking Dead and The Last of Us? I harbor these feelings myself but I don't know if I have a solid reason. For the record, this thread's intention isn't to shit on Days Gone, so let's not get too vitriolic towards one game or the other please and thank you!

Thread Shazam! Spoiler Thread
I finally got around to seeing this and ended up hating it. I feel bad being the one to shoot a film down, which is why I feel so utterly confused by what I watched, it felt like I saw a completely different movie from everyone else. Usually my opinions don't differ too greatly from the RT scores so really, I was shocked. Girlfriend didn't like it at all either. Firstly, it seemed really strange how out of sync Asher Angel and Zachary Levi were in their performances, didn't feel like they were two halves of the same character at all. Shazam acting vapid and weird and letting things get to his head wasn't telegraphed by how Billy acts without his powers at all. Sivana's goals weren't clear at all and him being a character motivated by envy was never conveyed, at all. Just a stiff performance without any kind of emotion at all. The conference room scene where he gets revenge or whatever, there's almost nothing to that at all and we never really get to stew in the fact that this is a guy whose been hunting for the powers of Shazam at all, and when the two finally meet there's almost nothing to it at all. We don't really get to see what the sin's motivations are at all either, nothing is developed at all. A lot of people spoke of an emotional payoff at the end of the film but I didn't feel it at all. When the rest of the family gain their powers it felt weird and unearned, save for Freddy, who I was convinced was going to have some sort of emotional scene with Billy. But it never happens, save for the cafeteria scene which comes after all is forgiven. Just about every emotion or event driving the characters never gets the time or energy or pacing it deserves to feel anything at all. Even something as simple as a more pronounced musical score could have helped here. Anything. At the end of the day the only endearing thing I found about the movie was it's humor, which, if consistent would be fine. Humor carries plenty of movies and I guess at the end of the day you could consider the genre of this film as comedy or even parody, but only about half of the jokes landed for me and I went in more than willing to be meet the film halfway.

I am so damn anxious I constantly toss and turn in my sleep remembering my greatest awkward hits. I'm pretty neurotic and anxious but I doubt I'm unique in this. A lot of these moments were totally innocuous or non-malicious, the kind of things people probably just shrugged off or got over, but they'll forever haunt me. - One time in college a friend hosted a party during christmas time at his parents house. Me and my other friend were sitting on a bench that couldn't support our weight (while fairly intoxicated) and broke the bench while taking a selfie, falling backwards into their fully decorated christmas tree. Somehow the tree was fairly unscathed, but we totally destroyed that bench. I think it was antique. His parents were polite and shrugged it off but I pretty much wanted to die. - When I was an awkward high school student I professed my love for another girl I went to school with via note (ugh. UGH.) . The next day she pretended it never happened. This was like 13 years ago but if I saw her walking down the street today I'd probably duck into a bush, or christmas tree. - When I was 5 my parents thought I ran away from home but I was actually hiding under the couch. My dad called the police and the entire block had a search party looking for me, I don't know what I was thinking at the time but once the cops showed I was so scared to face the music I couldn't come out. It makes me sick to my stomach how freaked out my parents were for absolutely no good reason. Anyway I thought it would be fun and maybe a little cathartic to ask: what embarrassing moments still haunt you? Please don't post anything that's unkind to another person, let's stick to our own stories. Also I would suggest not posting anything that could damage your career or social life, or anything that's too much of a bummer ;) .

For the first time in forever I've been playing with a dedicated party, usually a couple rounds a day and we've been having a blast. I'm truly in love with Pathfinder, I feel like objectively speaking he isn't the strongest pick in the game but the ziplines and grappling hook can lead to so many interesting encounters it's just been so pleasurable to play as. The loot table is pretty awful though. I've been eyeing the different packs for purchase because I'm ready to show this game my support but I think I'm going to hold off until March and see what the future brings.

Currently, 0. I've had horrible insomnia my entire life and would nap a lot during the daytime, but inexplicably it just stopped being a problem for me over the last 6 months or so, which is absolutely unreal and has been a weird blessing. It turns out....not being depressed helps!

Thread Anyone else struggle with tab organization?
I'm usually quite comfortable at home but at work it can be a nightmare. I have a two monitor set up at work and really need a third, I basically have two programs that need the entire space of a monitor and then at any given time another internet window to look things up in, a notepad with it's own tabs to take notes in, as well as constantly needing to check in on email, skype, my schedule, etc. It can be a huge pain in the ass. My problem is I often find myself opening new tabs and dragging them out of my fullscreen web apps that never get closed rather than opening a dedicated third browser window so I end up with a bunch of forgotten windows pulled up like it's 99'.

Thread When reports about cannabis being not harmless are published, people can be angry
As mentioned by many previous posters, the article is crap. I smoked a lot of weed in college and for a bit after college and found that in the short term it was very helpful for my anxiety and depression, but in the long term it made a lot of those problems worse for me. I eventually phased it out of my life. I still have a lot of friends who smoke every day, some for fun and many as a coping mechanism. Considering I went down that path myself and found it ultimately did more harm than good for me, I have mixed feelings about it all, but it isn't my business. I don't think it's a miracle drug but obviously it's less dangerous than alcohol, it's less dangerous than cigarettes, if it helps people let them have it.

A prime example would be the "Kimmy is a feminist!" episode in Season 3. Also Tina Fey ends up apologizing or sticking her foot in her mouth for race related jokes a LOT, isn't exclusive to Kimmy Schmidt. I really enjoy her brand of humor a lot and I think there's a lot to like in her work, I just find that I'm wincing almost as much as I'm laughing these days. Edit: I only just found this opinion piece but it sums up a lot of the sentiment I had about this episode, and a lot of the elements of this episode that I found mediocre in particular have slowly leaked out into the rest of the show.

Thread Introvert ERA: How do you cope with your personality?
I'm definitely an introvert but that surprises a lot of people. I don't think I fall neatly into the category but I'm definitely not extroverted. I'm pretty talkative and I find a lot of enjoyment out of bonding with other people, but I often find myself dreading going out to parties even when it's people I know and love. What I've found is that I try and take the initiative whenever possible to socialize but on my own terms, for example, I'd much rather host a party than be a guest. My job at work is actually in customer service, and I don't mind it at all. There's a piece of mind in knowing that a conversation is fleeting and isn't the rest of my life. Also, I've accepted that sometimes in life, you have to be uncomfortable.OP, I'm sorry your relationship ended. My only advice is that the future is unwritten and when life has me down I try to remind myself that it's presumptuous to think that I know where my life is headed, and that's a good thing. There are a whole slew of good things and interactions and people in your future. Also whoever said not to date another introvert, I don't get that at all. Me and my girlfriend are couch potatoes and I love that.

This isn't my favorite of TLM2 sets so far, but definitely interesting, the play functions on the box look kind of cute. I'm just about finished with Overwatch Wave 1, I'll post some pictures when I'm completely finished, I just have to do the scaffolding on Gibraltar. Overwatch could potentially be one of my favorite themes, but it's execution at least sofar doesn't feel quite where it should be. With the (rather big) exception of Mercy, the minifigures are really fun. 75974 Bastion and 75973 D.Va and Reinhardt are easy highlights for me. I think "over-sizing" the D.Va mech / Reinhardt suit but keeping the characters minifigure scale was a really spot on idea, it's nice that it creates a backdoor to include those mini's in a lineup with the rest even though those sets are out of scale with the game and the rest of the playsets otherwise. That all being said, I'm left a bit disappointed by the rest of the sets. 75970 Tracer vs Widowmaker is kind of in the middle for me, because at least the value proposition is a bit better, but 75971 Hanzo v Genji and 75972 Dorado Showdown don't do anything for me short of collecting the minifigures. 75975 Watchpoint Gibraltar seems like a waste of the price bracket. I like how it can be supplemented with 75970 but it's just too bad some of the best minifigures in the wave are trapped in that one. I do think the Peanut Butter and Banana inside the shuttle are super cute though, and the good news is, they're definitely getting my mind turning on how I'd like to improve them and add on to them.

This is a weird question to answer. I feel like, if Metroid was a property that was getting continuous consistent updates staring Samus, there would be plenty of room in the universe to expand out to other characters. But that ISN'T the case. So no, I'd much rather have more Samus! I'm reminded of Halo Reach and Halo 5. When Reach hit, it was refreshing to play as a new protagonist. But in 5 it's just grating. I feel like if they tried to remove Samus from a game like Metroid Prime 4, it would be the later.

Shaun's a good dude, watching the video now. Transphobia is far from a problem unique to the UK but yeah, they've always been a step behind in this regard. It's ridiculously difficult to transition in that country and it wasn't all that long ago they forced transpeople to go through ridiculous hoops like dressing as your identifying gender in public for over a year before prescribing HRT. Basically, if you're really trans and you really want these pills to help you assimilate and be yourself, put yourself through a year of hell. I've heard wait times for HRT can be like 6 months to a year, altho this is all anecdotes I've heard from my friends over there. I'd rather have just had something more akin to Shadow Moses or Big Shell, sure, but Ground Zeroes wasn't really all that. Remakes often aren't always better in every sense of the word. A lot of games had really strong aesthetics that got stepped all over in remasters. Which is just one example, there are plenty of reasons to play an original even when a good remaster exists. Twin Snakes comes to mind. I think Twin Snakes is a nifty game and there are some really goofy fun things about it, it deserves to exist, etc. But it's not faithful, at all. Do remasters have to be faithful to be good? No. But it's a perfectly reasonable reason for wanting to play and experience the original. In another example here, I can't say I'd blame people for preferring one of these to the other.

I'd like just a teensy bit more in terms of character individuality, like each character should have some sort of class ability or modifier that sets them apart even further than what we've already seen in Arms 1. I think that despite all the different unique arms, this was actually something that made the game feel so barren to many, once you've learned one character there really isn't much to the others.

I bought it and to be honest... I love it! I’m learning procreate and getting used to drawing on it, but it’s been a lot easier for me compared to the cintiq sofar. First doodle I drew. Definitely still getting my sea legs but it’ll be a fun process. I think I need to just force myself to dive into a big illustration to get a solid grasp, sofar I’ve just been drawing goofy little cartoons.

Like I said, I don't really like calling it liking it "ironically" becuase that sort of feels like a dodge, why not just be comfortable in your own skin and admit that you like something sincerely, etc. BUT, I don't think I enjoy the aesthetic in like, the way it was intended I guess? Thread Hey art teachers, stop discouraging student's love for anime and manga art
I got my bachelor's in Illustration in about three years ago and this was definitely a thing. I have mixed feelings about it. In my experience I found that professors usually used "anime / manga" to describe a very specific kind of student, the ones who typically refused to learn figure and perspective and were sort of stuck poorly replicating whatever their favorite anime or comic was. If a student presented work like in my avatar though, that would fly no problem. I really do agree that there is a bias especially with older professors and that it's a problem and unfairly shames or secludes artists for liking what they like. That being said? A lot of the students I knew that were hyper into anime and manga styles came out the other end better for it, including myself.

Thread Thinking about selling my Wacom Cintiq 13HD and buying an iPad Pro. Am I crazy?
For pretty much the entire span of my young adulthood, I wanted a Cintiq. I always dreamt about getting one and thought it was what I needed if I wanted a career in art. Well, about a year and a half ago I finally fufilled my dream and got one, and I don't much care for using it at all. The screen fidelty seems really spotty and dark, so dark I need a preview panel up on my real display so I can judge color as I go. Drawing feels just as unnatural as using a cheaper tablet and I struggle to draw in the same way I do on pen and paper. It's also difficult to get into a comfortable position with it, the wires are always taught. It's basically been a heavy paperweight on the side of my desk since. On the other hand, I've tried my friends 9.7 iPad Pro, and I love the thing. I was immediately pumping out pretty good sketches on it, and her artwork looks beautiful, she doesn't seem inhibited by the constraints of the iOS apps at all. I've never owned a tablet (that kind of tablet I mean) before. I'm an android user, but the idea seems pretty appealing to me. And with the upcoming phones this year not really catching my eye, it would help me pad out the length of my current phone (a OnePlus 3T) a bit and I figure if I'm impressed by the old models, the new ones might really blow me away. I don't know, are there any other artists out there that work on the iPad? Am I crazy for wanting one over my current setup? Regular iPad users, I'd love to hear your thoughts too.

Thread LTTP: Resident Evil VII and why it reminds of, wait for it, A Link Between Worlds.
Some early game spoilers here. So I was looking for some spooky games to get into the holiday spirit and finally decided to nab a copy of Resident Evil VII. I have a pretty spotty history with the franchise. I'm more or less an advocate, Resident Evil 4 is one of my favorite games period, and I really like a lot of the games that Resident Evil spawned like Devil May Cry, Onimusha. etc. But I actually really only have a personal connection to RE4 and REmake. To keep it short, RE4 was the first game in the franchise I played and beat. I was too scared of the other games as a kid to really embrace them and was such a goody two shoes I didn't really touch M rated games until the second half of my teenage years. Anyway, I did eventually play REmake and loved it, I've gotten a couple hours into a ton of the others and liked them, but just never really finished them. My understanding of ""the lore"" is pretty weak at best, I forget who characters are and why they're relevant, etc. BUT, I think I've gone back a fair bit and have a general understanding and appreciation for what these games are or were to people. Anyway, I'm really early in REVII still, but I'm totally loving it. I've encountered Jack twice, just at the point where I'm really exploring around and fighting molded, etc. I know there are dozens and dozens of write-ups about RE7 at this point, but what it really reminds me of is LoZ: A Link Between Worlds strangely. The thing about both games that really strikes me as masterful is the way that they both innovate to create nostalgia. Both games change fundamental gameplay but do it in such a way as to replicate the feelings of the original game, feelings that were long lost. The feeling that players had in 1991 when they played A Link To The Past was a feeling of openness and exploration, but when you play that game today, it comes across quite differently. Following the series over the decades, we all know exactly what to expect in a Legend of Zelda game, and in reality it isn't very "open" at all, and that's fine.Playing Ocarina of Time today feels very different than what it felt like when you played it all those years ago. After decades of experience with the franchise, we have all trained our eyes, and we can now see the strings. ALBW innovates by cutting those strings and freeing the player, and as a result we actually get a product that feels approximate to what it felt like when I was a little kid playing Zelda for the first time, and that's really something. What's so thrilling to me is how REVII feels like that kind of game to me. We've all seen a dozen first person survival horror games at this point, and they all sort of follow that Amnesia model. REVII is different. REVII takes that first person perspective to deliver a true, classic, Resident Evil experience. Making that mad dash away from an enemy, only for Jack to smash through a wall right in front of you? Turning around and dashing to that safe room, low on health and ammo? Hearing that safe music begin to play when you're finally safe, Jack still rambling by the door? You could remake REVII entirely third person fixed perspective like the original games, with it's camera shifting from one angle to the next each turn, and sure, it would mechanically feel very similar to classic RE. But those tricks? They don't work anymore. Both RE7 and ALBW make bold risks with gameplay and series convention to shine a light on the past. And that's rad. Anyway, I'm rambling quite a bit here, but I'm having a blast and just wanted to share my thoughts and wanted to hear what others thought now that the game is almost two (!) years old.

I've tried it at my friends a couple times and each time I never really get the effect that I'm supposed to. I think it's because of the poor eyesight I have in my left eye. Thread Why didn't Final Fantasy V and VI get 3D remakes like III and IV?
I've heard this argument many times before but it isn't like Final Fantasy IV was bereft of any serious tone. The aesthetic of the DS games was well thought out and looked quite good for the hardware if you ask me. Also it's not like those original FFVI sprites were grim and serious looking. I'd actually argue the Matrix Software models matched the tone of the concept art more than the SNES graphics, with the exception of the enemy sprites which were masterful in the original. They look about the same to me, honestly the SNES spirtes are more deformed than the DS models.

Sargon is a literal white supremacist (not hyperbole) who has peddled conspiracy theories about the death of Heather Hyer (the women murdered during the Unite the Right rally) which is really only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this guy and the kind of content he makes a living off. Like Shaun said in the video: he assumes as much but it's making a presumption, and the fact that such a presumption has to exist isn't great. I still honestly can see it going either way. I find it suspect that the jokes included in the trailer were ones that could be so easily misinterpreted. Anyone unfamiliar to the previous game has absolutely 0 context that those jokes could be aiming at satirizing the co-opting of progressive rhetoric. Call me cynical, but I think it's quite fair to at least complain that this looks suspect, which is all anyone really did, myself included. Shaun explains it perfectly, honestly. And as far as "it's Bethesda", I don't see your point at all, part of the concern is BECAUSE this would feel like a betrayal so quickly on the heels of Wolfenstein 2 and it's press, which really is the only example I know of in which Bethesda capitalized on progressive politics for it's marketing campaign. So, how exactly does that suddenly translate to infinite good faith? This is large corporation, which anyone lauding DOOM 2016 and it's brand of humor would presumably be suspicious of inherently.

My first forum was Gamefaqs, which I signed up for about a month before I turned 13. Kind of weird to think I've been an obsessive internet forum poster for 15 years now. I remember my signup date particularly well because I was technically breaking TOS. Before that it was AOL chatrooms. At Gamefaqs I orbited around LUE, the PS2 social board, and The Couch. After Gamefaqs I spent time in the Gamefaqs spin-off scene, a lot of young users were learning PHP and it was pretty popular to attempt various Gamefaqs clones. Gamefaqs Hell, Aqua Boards, Twisted Legacy, Outboards, Special Ops, etc. One of the seedier and more popular was Luelinks, which basically existed solely to circumvent Gamefaqs TOS but became it's own thing. From there I ended up discovering places like Something Awful and 4chan, for better and for worse. Mostly for worse. I was a dumbass and have grown up a lot since then and wouldn't go near places like that today, but as a young teen that kind of "no rules!!!" space was appealing to me. Eventually discovered NeoGaf, did a lot of growing up in late high school and college. Moved from NeoGaf to ResetEra.

I always find it slightly uncomfortable in these films where a white savior swoops in and saves the minority population from themselves. Also it kind of bothers me when these films focus in on the racist converts humanity over the rest of the cast, like the only character that audiences will empathize and relate to is the white racist character and all stories about race positive or negative need to be told through that lens to be successful. Kind of like what happened with Three Billboards although I'd argue that Three Billboards is a worse offender. I should probably rewatch this film as it's been awhile.

As someone who works in customer service, I'm not entirely convinced that dividing their pool of reps by something as arbitrary as geography is going to lead to a reduction in wait times. Making sure that reps are actually meeting QA goals and having an appropriate staff size would be the most important thing I'd imagine, although I always find these kind of restructuring ideas interesting so i'd be fascinating I guess to see if this sort of thing actually plays out well. And yeah, unfortunately customer service reps are typically not treated well, by customers or by other staff.

I have an odd fondness for She's An Angel and put it on just about any playlist that is vaguely romance-y. They really have a great career but pretty much all of my favorites are from Flood and Lincoln and their self titled. My uncle gave my sister a copy of Flood in 91' for Christmas. She shelved it for a year and later became obsessed, and being my cool older sister, I basically had a deep love of TMBG from like 10 years old onward. I think my second concert ever was TMBG when I was around 13 years old (the first was Atom and His Package, another one of my sisters). - She's An Angel - Birdhouse in Your Soul - Ana Ng - Don't Let's Start - Lucky Ball And Chain Edit: Also isn't this a list thread? They already get exactly as much attention as they deserve. Most people on this forum are aware they exist, which is saying something considering they are the product of a bizarre licensing arrangement on a commercial flop of a console. It doesn't deserve a place in any conversation regarding the core series, as they aren't Nintendo games and do not represent Nintendo's intentions for the series. If anything, the black sheep that should enter conversation more would have to be Zelda 2. Anyway, I get a lot of enjoyment from your topics brainchild, but this one seems a bit obtuse.

I feel like it's probably too good to be true just because of how distinct each is, and how many original models that would mean creating, which would be especially difficult as so many of these characters haven't been seen or heard of from NES days and would require more time in the oven than something like an Inkling which they can model after a recent preexisting game. Still, this would be the dream and the Smash team has been known to go above and beyond in the past (Koopa Kids)! Just realize this is probably quite a request for a single character.

Watched all of Season 2 this week and have finally caught myself up in Season 3. I'm blown away by this show and am pretty sad I can't binge watch it anymore. At the beginning of the series I felt like the show's greatest flaw was how transparent it was that Elliot was Mr Robot, I was floored by just how well they executed on it though, when Darlene was revealed to be Elliot's sister, my jaw was on the floor. I always was a very meh at what seemed like the glorification of real life groups like Anonymous, etc, but as the show progressed we all know how that turned out. Christian Slater and Rami Malek are phenomenal actors and as cheesy as this sounds, I want to emulate Darlene's aesthetic so so bad.

I actually did miss it, not sure how tbh. Thanks for mentioning it. It really does seem like Spider-Man has huge appeal, which is why I found it interesting Homecoming didn't gross as well as Dark Knight Rises. It's not like Homecomings numbers are even close to being considered small potatoes, just an interesting observation if the licensed product sales are really THAT much higher. I wonder if it's just toys and if so what it is that makes Spidey kill in that sector? Especially considering how long the movies floundered, and it seems like it's been awhile since there was a landmark animated series or anything of the sort for Spidey.

But for the sake of an argument, didn't Dark Knight Rises gross more than Spider-Man Homecoming? Also a quick googling indicates that Tec Comics is outselling Amazing Spider-Man currently, so IDK! I think Last of Us 2 outselling God of War is quite likely considering both Last of Us 1 and Uncharted 4 both did over 10mil. Not sure about Spider-man but I wouldn't count it out. God of War 3 only did 5 mil, granted God of War is making far more of a splash and seems to be somewhat of an evergreen but I imagine that when bigger and better things come PS4's way it'll eventually be overshadowed.

Currently between jobs (but I've got an interview for a job I'm really excited about tomorrow! So wish me luck! >:) ), but at my last job it would depend on the type of workday it was. If it was 12+ hours I'd usually just go home and immediately crash, or watch TV and play one of my unwinding games (currently MTG:Arena and Minecraft, haha). If it was a short day like an 8h or whatever then often I go over to my friends house and hang out with him and his roommate for a couple hours. I hope you feel more welcome here! Sorry I sat on responding to this for a bit. This was a lovely post and I appreciate you taking the time to write it. Minority groups like the LGBT are capable of bigotry just like anyone else, and there are plenty of trans people who need checking too. In the same way that some cis queer people can harbor transphobic views, we have our own problems with bigotry towards nb and masc trans people from within our own trans community. It's not unusual to see transpeople who think that their experience is the only valid way forward, gatekeeping other transpeople the same way others gatekept them. We should all aim to be our best selves and work to break down barriers instead of erecting them. It's pretty basic stuff and it's echoed all the time, but it bears repeating. If we all strive to be a little more empathetic the world will be better for all of us. When I see TERFs and intolerant LGBT I try and remind myself that they do not speak for all of us.

Most specifically with it being fodder, episodes like this make for great jumping off points later in the series, and with the way Season 2 resolved so much of the greater plot, these sort of points are going to be really valuable in the future. Also binge-watched or not, breather episodes are not a bad thing provided they don't overtake the core plot.

Thread Tell me about your go-to VGM playlist
I don't listen to VGM much at all but when I do it's usually somewhat ambient in nature or something that feels more like pop music and less like a musical score. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that music quite a bit in game, I just don't get much pleasure jamming out to that stuff out of game. Recent exceptions to the rule would probably be DOOM, Tropical Freeze (I'm a sucker for Wise, but who isn't?), and surprisingly Tekken 7.

Thread Final Fantasy XIV worth it for an FF fan that's never played an MMO?
Yes, yes, yes, a hundred times yes. First off, it's filled to the brim with Final Fantasy-ness and is very much a game for "the fans". Additionally, it is very playable solo and while the dungeons and party content are the best part and required, it isn't a daunting experience at all and is very straight forward, with little player interaction really required if that isn't your cup of tea (but, if it does end up being your cup of tea, I've found that while toxic players are still a thing, FFXIV has a much more tolerable userbase than your average game and doesn't feel nearly as vitriolic). Storyline is actually really captivating and it's one of the better FInal Fantasy worlds, straight up. While Heavensward and Stormblood are the best content in the game, I wouldn't recc. boosting myself. A Realm Reborn has a lot of great content, never saw the point in paying money to skip gameplay that is actually fun and entertaining.

Thread Is it time for Chloe and Sam to be the faces of future Uncharted games? (open spoilers for UC4 & LL)
People are waaaaay too hard on Sam. One great thing about Sam is he doesn't feel as squeeky clean as Nate and Chloe do, which makes the murdering of tons and tons of pirates and merceneries a little easier to swallow. Personally I think it would be really neat if they went with multiple protagonists in the next game. Sully / Nadine / Chloe / Sam / Cutter each having chapters could be pretty interesting. If not that, maybe some other way to split the game up that feels a bit different. Another idea that crossed my mind was the length of Lost Legacy and how refreshing it was. What about a double feature? Make a game starring Chloe and a game starring Sam and then wrap the two up with some epilogue that brings the two together as a pair. Something like that. I truly hope they never bring Nathan back though. He's had enough.

Thread What is your goal in life?
I'd like to transition to a career in art. I have a bachelor's in Illustration and would like to use it, which thus far I have not save for commissions here and there. I'd take a pay cut if it meant getting to work in the field I'm interested in, and basically I'd just like to be able to draw for a living, Other than that, just relationship goals I guess, want to settle down, have had dreams of adopting a child, etc. It would have to come much later down the road as I'm just not financially stable enough to even contemplate those sort of things.

Thread I'd like to see more shows approach sci-fi with a similar tone to Star Trek: The Next Generation
Star Trek: TNG, DS9, and even to an extent Voyager are really something special. I think one of the things that makes Star Trek so appealing is how it kind of cons the viewer into thinking they're smart. The show isn't really that high brow at all, it's really just a bunch of philosophy 101 stuff, but they present it in a way that gets the viewer going. I think DS9 felt like a more realized world than TNG did, even if it meant undoing some of the egalitarianism you've mentioned. Voyager unfortunately drives me nuts in the way that Janeway frequently chooses the objectively wrong choice when faced with a moral issue (looking at you, Tuvix). There were some really standout episodes in TNG. The Inner Light, Family, Chain of Command, Redemption & Sins of the Father, too many to name really. A friend recommended The Orville to me and I absolutely couldn't stomach it. The trans episode was really embarrassing and the show was kinda downright sexist and tired. Discovery is kinda cool but it's not the same. We'll get something one day. I mostly just wonder about what happens after Voyager and the TNG movies in the original timeline. Does Sisko come back? Does Worf ever captain?

Thread That Metal Gear Solid 4 Raiden fight (and other cool game fight-scenes)
Depends who you ask. The name "Solid" was removed during development to convey that it was a spinoff, but if that makes it canon or not is a bit of a debate. I believe Platinum insist it's canon. I don't think Konami or Kojima have said anything clear regarding it, and probably don't care. It seems to be more canon then games like AC!D and GBC MGS, as it hasn't really been refuted yet where others have.

Eh, I disagree I guess. I did enjoy the gameplay quite a bit and it's not like MGSV left me outraged or anything of the sort, I just find it hard to justify a numeral for what little story it provided. Honestly if they had called it Peace Walker 2 I'd probably have raved about it, as silly as that is.

In middle school I went on an overnight field trip to Boston. My parents gave me like 50 bucks cash for food, which I promptly spent on a copy of Capcom vs SNK 2 EO for Gamecube. Grabbed as much as I could from the continental breakfast at the hotel and I was GOOD. Ended up hating it, who the hell thought putting specials onto the analog stick would be fun? It's so lame!

Man, it's really time for me to replay through the whole series again. MGS4 has so so many problems, but I really loved it and will defend it to this day. I really wish they had just ended the series with this one as 5 really added nothing. I also loved MGR:R but kind of wish they had gone with the initial idea of sticking it during and before MGS4, was really sad to see that poor Raiden got pulled back into the game AGAIN.

I have to admit I was a real sucker for this film. Nolan's basic plotlines and concepts are always kind of all over the place, but he really is great at wringing the emotion out, and honestly that's more than enough to have me leaving the theater happy. His movies are cathartic.

It ties in perfectly! It answers a real question that Trigger left wide open while being thoughtful and careful enough not to much too much directly with Triggers plotline, which so many sequels do and fail at spectacularly. And the art, music, and atmosphere are just so good! It's such a delightful aesthetic that really sells it's unique setting. It has this fascinating feeling that is almost like, both comfy and yet alien and bizarre?

Thread With the popularity of Alexa and Google Home was the hatred toward the Kinect justified?
I never had any problem with Kinect existing, it was just exhausting seeing Microsoft lead with it for like, 4 straight E3 conferences when it was near unanimously considered a blunder. It was strange to see them double down and bundled their next console with it. The technology is interesting but they never really did anything compelling with it. It was around for like, seven years before it was discontinued and even with all that time it never "arrived". The privacy concerns were valid, but people can find actual utility with the smart speakers, which is why I have like 3 of them. Kinect never really had that short of turning the TV on and off.

Thread Games for Which There is No "Definitive" Version
I'd argue that none of the DS version's improvements are actually good, making the original the definitive. There's new content, but it grinds the game down to a halt and effectively introduces the same kind of elements that people blast DK64 for.

Thread Games for Which There is No "Definitive" Version
I've never agreed with this, tbh. Subsistence controls just fine and I wouldn't consider the alterations in 3D to be improvements. If anything, I think the strongest argument for MGS3 not having a definitive would be between Subsitance and Snake Eater, with the concern being that Subsistance's new camera features actively makes the game too easy, in the same way that Twin Snakes effectively destroys the challenge of MGS1, although to a much lesser degree.

Persona 3 and Final Fantasy VI have been listed already but are great examples. Kingdom Hearts 2 comes to mind as well, as there are a lot of criticisms of the HD Remasters and Final Mix in general. Chrono Trigger as well, although the DS version is thoroughly the best version, it also introduces it's own issues into the mix. Yep, this too!

Thread Have you ever gotten detention?
Got detention a LOT in high school. I went to a catholic school for my first three years of high school. I had a gym teacher who was abusive and would call me the F word a lot. This particular teacher got a lot of complaints but he was untouchable with the school and the gym was named after him. I acted out a lot, especially in gym and basically refused to participate, never bought the gym uniform, so I couldn't do class, would just take the F and sit on the bleachers basically. They'd hand out office detentions for kids who wouldn't participate, so I had a 1 hour office detention every Tuesday and Thursday for three solid years. Would have to walk the 4 miles home because I missed the bus. Parents got home late from work and I had just enough time to walk home and get my paper routes done before sun down and my parents coming home so I basically never got caught by my family. It sucked butts but at that age it felt like the path of least resistance, which I did a lot back then. The silver lining to all this is I had plenty of time to steal dodgeballs from his office and throw them in the dumpster out back. I'd take one religiously every day, and every once in awhile he'd have a meltdown about where all the dodgeballs were going. I thought i was really REALLY cool.
