Thread RTTP: Star Wars The Old Republic - The MMORPG that has more player agency than most modern single player RPGs
My favorite TOR memory, speaking as someone who sadly will never play it unless it's ported to consoles, is when the game first launched and a wave of anti-BioWare-ism flourished in the form of "TORtanic" memes... only for the game to then stabilize and it's been doing fine ever since.

Thread Television shows you feel reasonably confident will never be "revived"
With all the TV revivals going on these past few years, it's easy to dismiss the practice as being so prolific, anything can be revived. But there are thousands of shows that are either so far off the radar that even TV execs recognize the fruitlessness or they're too entangled in studio red tape to ever find a continuation. We could fill this thread with stuff that lasted three episodes before it was pulled off the airwaves, but I'd rather center on those shows that at least a fair number of us have encountered that likely still do not stand a shot. I'll start with these three. CBS Sitcom (2000-2006) This unfunny mess had everything going against it, including critical panning and a 2004 cancellation that was reversed when the producers to CBS' satisfaction. Everyone I knew found it so bland they couldn't fathom its six-season longevity. It was the bad gift that kept on giving. Yet clearly, someone was watching. Enough people tuned in every week to make it a sleeper hit, which is sometimes enough to warrant studio interest in a revival. But I will literally eat a raspberry if this thing ever comes back. I hate raspberries. And no, this thread is about "wait, OP hates raspberries?" now, damn it. PTEN Action/Crime Drama (1993-1997) By contrast, was... well, it was better than Not the highest of compliments. Kid me liked it, though! My grandmother was definitely checking it out every week for David Carradine, and you know, in hindsight, who wouldn't? Chris Potter's "1990s JRPG protagonist living the life of a procedural TV cop" was nowhere near as interesting. The show is dated in ways that the original somehow isn't, and while isn't some perennial zeitgeist or anything, I definitely see it talked about way more than its sequel series. This one was canned after four seasons at the start of 1997 when PTEN -- more cult-classically notable for being the home of for 80% of its run -- came to a crash and ceased all broadcasts. Really don't see anyone lobbying for more, especially with Carradine long gone. NBC (1993-1996) "Wait, damn you! I actually watched this show! Why don't I recognize half the people in your photo? Where the hell is Roy Scheider?" If you're in the market for a relatively short-lived show with not only a revolving door of actors and actresses but the most lunatic tonal shifts I've ever seen, may be right up your canal. Originally launched as a proudly educational science fiction series about a near-future centered on ocean exploration, felt like the underseas answer to that no ever really asked in the first place. But that was OK, because it had the big bucks and interests of Steven Spielberg, and it started off with decent enough ratings to keep afloat. In the first season, the crew kept running into lost treasure troves, ancient mysteries unraveled, evil submarine pirates, you know, the works. But as Wikipedia states, it all had a believable air about it: "The first season's storylines primarily dealt with plausible oceanographic research, environmental issues, political machinations of the world and the interpersonal relationships of the crew." After cast spats led to numerous departures and the show was relocated from Los Angeles to Orlando, the network pushed for a less realistic tone for the second season, with episodes centered on killer plants, time travel, a giant fire-breathing worm, an ancient demon... yeah, this was no longer sophisticated. It concluded with the crew being teleported across the cosmos and forced into a civil war. Mark Hamill was there, I kid you not. The third season, which never even finished being made before NBC finally said no, was a hot mess with even further cast departures, a literal show renaming (), a military dystopia, and Michael Ironside. Well, at least that happened. I'll just leave this here:Apparently, I had a lot to say about But the point is the same across the board; this show ain't coming back, either. What are some of your picks, Era?

Thread Deadline: Kalinda Vazquez Set By Paramount To Script Original ‘Star Trek’ Movie
My thoughts on big-screen Trek have been few and far between since the franchise returned to its rightful place on TV. I'm sure there are exceptions involved here but the consensus I get from fandom is more or less the same. Either they're happy with the modern shows or they aren't, but no one seems to be shouting from rooftops that the way to fix anything is via movie theaters. That's just now how Trek works, even if -- indeed, a few of its greatest stories have been told in cinemas. My thoughts today... are more or less the same! But by all rights, Kalinda Vasquez is a cool gal. It is inevitable that someone is going to successfully create a new Star Trek movie. *shrug* May as well be her. Now my real question is, does this thing premiere on Paramount+ simultaneously alongside theatrical release?thisisresetera.jpg

Thread Which Final Fantasy has your favourite magic system?
In terms of the usefulness and splendor of spells, FFXII: The Zodiac Age ranks supreme. There’s a decent degree of depth involved and it’s fun strategizing for magic-heavy optional battles. Worst here is probably VIII, for the same reason many others have mentioned. On the other hand, the systems built around the gaining and strengthening of magic peak in FFVII. Spells are bought or found, which is part of what makes games like FFV and FFXII cool, and then they level up over time. It’s stylish (materia orbs are visually satisfying) and kind of addictive. I hate FFVI’s, ngl. On paper, the notion of permanent stat growth at level-ups courtesy of equipped Esper is rather cool. In my personal experience, it’s just a lot of frustration. I’d like it more if I didn’t feel the urge to time everything at least passably well so that I don’t wind up with suboptimal character builds I didn’t intend to create. This urge leads me to micromanage the heck out of my party as their levels climb. FFVI’s battle system isn’t engaging enough to support that menial dryness. (I know my critiques re: FFVI’s system are entirely subjective.)

Only issue I've had thus far is that the console started going to a black screen for two seconds or so every... 4-5 minutes? This started when Skyrim attempted to load HDR automatically; my TCL television has that "quasi-HDR" thing but it isn't the real, HDR10, deal. I disabled the console's setting that lets apps try to enter HDR mode automatically and that seems to have fixed it.

Thread LTTP: Morrowind is both atmospheric and bewildering
My Elder Scrolls history is short and sweet. When I was 15 years old, I played an hour of Morrowind are my mom's boyfriend's house. That hour stuck with me. I didn't touch the game again until three days ago, but I never forgot my time wandering near Seyda Neen. There was something so different from what I usually played and so vividly memorable. I played Oblivion even less -- approximately 20-30 minutes on a display unit at a GameStop. Like many players, it wasn't until Skyrim that I spent any real length of time in Tamriel. And, like many players are equally quick to declare, I never even finished the story. E3 2018 came and went, and the excitement for The Elder Scrolls 6's announcement prompted me to go back to the pseudo-beginning. Back to Morrowind, to relive that lone and lovely hour and -- perhaps -- go further. I'd watched the recent documentary The History of Bethesda Game Studios and remembered why despite relatively little personal history with their games BGS still impresses me. I asked for help finding lore videos and guides so I could finally, finally make some sense out of Nirn. And then I downloaded Morrowind and got to work. My character is Nora Navarre, an adventuring Imperial who ran afoul of the law and got stuck on a boat. She doesn't know why, and neither do I, but the Emperor himself has pardoned her and sent her to Vvardenfell. Immediately I felt transported back to my youth, to when this opening sequence and revolutionary openness first stunned me. I recall contextual clues and Fargoth's voice and the glorious silt strider as if it were all just yesterday. I suppose it helps that Morrowind is beloved, and thus spoken-of often on the internet. I've joined the Blades, working for a shirtless fellow with an obvious drug problem. I've joined the Fighter's Guild, clearing out an outlaw orc's house and making it my own. I keep getting attacked by assassins, and I don't know why, but their armor fetches a pretty penny so shine on, you crazy bad guys. I'm blown away and confounded by the number of gameplay systems at hand. I see items like greef and I have no idea what I'm looking at. I keep getting told it's my lucky day and I don't understand why. I love it. I grew up on JRPG stock. BioWare got me into WRPGs, but mostly I've stuck to BioWare. I'm taking my first measured steps into truly exploring Tamriel, and these giant trees look like mushrooms and it's like video game crack. Even the feeling of going down the Wikipedia rabbit hole every time I talk to somebody -- underlined clickable words ahoy! -- feels new and vibrant to me. If anyone here happens to be a Morrowind vet (oh come on, half of you probably are) and has any tips for a first-timer, I'm all ears. In the meantime, I'll keep reading every book voraciously and devouring the gorgeous world-building and alien environs of Vvardenfell. Cool game, yo.

I think this is a rare case where there could be an appreciable uptick in sales for a remaster courtesy of a years-out official sequel reveal. Next March, ME3 will turn nine years old. People still struggle to get two pages into any Mass Effect thread without bemoaning the endings. This short reveal trailer tells us specifically from that trilogy will move forward in way, even if (apart from Liara) we don't know the details. There's a not-so-subtle implication here that Shepard could show up, either in the flesh or in remodeled flesh (ha) or as an AI or who-the-hell-knows. It's the sort of stuff that I can say without irony is the one thing that'll bring some folks back. And if they're coming back anyway, they may as well replay the trilogy.

Yeah, sometimes I have to wonder if my love for Inquisition has a bit too much to do with being a fan of all the franchise's media tie-ins as well. The fact that I speak with folks who still enjoy that quest even without being the Dragon Age nerd that I am is perhaps a testament to its innate presentation, but without "The Masked Empire" it's simply not on the same level narratively.

I'm not going to detail the incident (much of it is available on the net anyway) but Ellis has been messed-up for a long time. He was briefly reported missing in May 2016 after a "manic episode." By no means does this excuse him for proving himself a piece-of-filth human. It's simply a terrible shame that the Dragon Age fan community worried over Ellis' mental health for a long time and then he's gone off the deep end sociopolitically and damned himself out of future opportunities because he's such a mean-spirited jackass. What a waste.

Thread Casey Hudson, Mark Darrah leave BioWare
I trust that Dragon Age remains in solid hands. I said this back when Mike Laidlaw left and I still mean it today. Despite the infamy of DA4's development the minds at the helm are truly talented and I hope that shines through in the final telling. But between Laidlaw and Darrah departing (and David Gaider if we're going farther back), there's something damn sad about it all. As for Casey Hudson, he's a nice dude but I'm not as fussed. The one thing I'll note is that (and this is 100% conjecture) I'd be less concerned over Mark leaving the company if he didn't do so simultaneously with Casey. Maybe there's nothing to that. Maybe they simply mulled it over together (or even separately) and this was the best time for them to leave. But to me, it feels like Mark Darrah has positioned folks to take over more smoothly whereas (from what limited public information we have via those blog posts) I don't know that the same can be said for Hudson. Which makes the synchronicity here potentially troubling.

I quite dislike how TV manufacturers are permitted to use the "HDR" term even without real HDR. Back when I grabbed my 2017 TCL for like $300-$350, I knew it wasn't legitimate HDR. I don't mind that (although I'll certainly upgrade eventually) but it's just so irritating as a notion. My Xbox Series X has been working like a dream except when it's perceived my television as HDR-capable -- I was getting second-long screen blackouts every few minutes until I went into the system settings and disabled it.

I think you'd get plenty out of owning both, OP. If I had enough spending money right now I'd be tempted to do the same. Game Pass is phenom. Full-on backwards compatibility is a pathway to many old games some consider to be... unnatural. (Palpatine dot gif.) I'm going with the PS5 first because there are some more immediate-future perks involved; FFXIV running more smoothly, FFVII Remake hopefully (cough probably) getting an update, Demon's Souls Remake. A few more things. But the Xbox Series X is certainly on my 2021 queue. Probably not until around year's end? It's where I'll want to be for things like Dragon Age going forward since Origins and 2 are both on Game Pass alongside Inquisition. And of course, it's also going to be my Elder Scrolls/Starfield machine. And Obsidian machine. It's cliche given where I work and all but RPGs truly have mapped out my next-gen future, ha.

If that’s the case, this is a fine line, tightrope sort of play. It’s also possible I’m completely off-base, or what we’re seeing here won’t even prove to be suitably accurate in the final telling. Regional climate change likely played a substantial part in the collapse. Once-verdant fields would suffer droughts, leading to massive human displacement. Those displaced would need fresh resources to survive. Some of them likely became "the Sea Peoples." The Sea Peoples, as scholars such as Eric H. Cline have posited, were less "cause" and more "effect." Of course, this is just one of several key angles. I recently read this book and recommend it: I disagree with Cline here and there. I think his structure could have been improved with a more cutthroat kind of editor. But overall, it's a terrific read, and it does an excellent job showing us what researchers now believe was the "Perfect Storm" that led to the Bronze Age Collapse.

Alright, so a few episodes into this I managed to convince my anime-watching friend who watched the XY seasons with me to finally get started on Sun/Moon. Since the Sun/Moon thread is understandably long in the tooth now, I thought I'd offer some thoughts on the first 20 or so episodes here. I love the cast! It's still taking me time to say goodbye to XY's, and I don't know if there's anyone here I like more than Serena, but the expanded number of characters is really helping. We've got several personalities and that's great. Some of the cast's goals (at least at this point) seem a little lol; Lana apparently wants to make bigger and bigger bubbles. Hey, got for her, I guess. But I've already witnessed a fair degree of character development for a few of these folks. I'm glad that that's continuing because I'm not sure offhand where XY ranks for anime fans but it's my highest bar right now and a big part of that was thanks to the character arcs. Like many, I wasn't thrilled with the art style at first, but the expressiveness and detailed animations are more than making up for it. I also love how Team Rocket has been utilized up to this point. Sparingly, yet meaningfully. I haven't tired of the Bewear shtick either. Litten is wonderful and I'm psyched to see more of him later. All in all, I'm enjoying this a great deal! I'm an easy please, admittedly. I didn't ever zone out in the slower parts of Johto or Hoenn. The one saga I haven't seen is Best Wishes, but I'm just not sure it'd be worth it due to everything I've heard online.

Thread So, uh... Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
What do people think about it? How many folks here have actually played it? It seems to slip under-the-radar in Final Fantasy discussions even more than stuff like Lightning Returns. The DS had a couple of Ivalice Alliance titles that brought back FFXII characters in canonical continuations (although in FFTA's case, it's just Vaan and Penelo) but even among FFXII diehards, I seldom see much chatter about those games. Especially Revenant Wings. Personally, I like it for what it is! I'm not a big fan of the art style and it isn't what I'd call an especially ambitious game. But the RTS-esque stuff is, oddly, the RTS I've ever gotten into? Probably just a matter of Final Fantasy flavoring doing its job on me or something, whatever. It's almost definitely my favorite game directed by Motomu Toriyama (as in, 100% Toriyama), though the bar isn't all that high for me in that regard. I don't know. It's a weird one. As someone who loves Ivalice, I grabbed it on release day and never looked back. But the amount of chatter I've heard about Revenant Wings... well... that would imply there any.

That's pretty badass. Now, if you don't like all those shows, obviously this isn't as big a deal for you. Of the three, I understand that is easily the most divisive of the bunch. Here on Era, like everywhere else on the internet, there have been arguments galore over the quality of that show. Whatever! I like it. But regardless, it's just a cool time for fans of this sort of setting. Do y'all remember this time last decade? The well was drying up big-time. The streaming world has changed all that. Personally, I'm most excited for but whew -- weekly episode drops for all three is just heavenly. It reminds me of the old days, with and airing every week. Or, years later, the time when and were one great, big, epic three-hour block on The Sci-Fi Channel. (Heck, intersected with that time period, too.) Are you a fan of this sort of setting? Are you looking forward to the returns of any of these shows? It just sort of reminds me of something my man John Crichton once said in "Wait for the wheel." The wheel has spun, and we're back, space fans.

100% this. Look, I never enjoyed MMOs before FFXIV and I know a lot of us didn’t. The team behind this game is so talented that I overcame that hurdle because hot damn it’s a good Final Fantasy. But even for those of y’all who can’t get past the MMO aspect, I get it, you don’t have to play the game; just please trust me: they are the best team at Square overall. Incredibly talented and their passion and reverence for the franchise shines through constantly even as they pave bold new roads for what it means to be an FF.

Didn't care for it much then. Dislike it even more today. The music and moment-to-moment gameplay are both terrific. The cutscenes are incredibly well-directed. But on the other hand, the story and characterization both disappointed me a great deal, and the gameplay experience felt repetitive and lacking in particularity.

Thread What is your opinion about Dragon Age's artstyle and identity?
The artstyle specifically in Inquisition is phenomenal. The design team did an incredible job crafting a beautiful yet jagged world, with so many lovely touches. The tarot cards are particularly gorgeous, and exactly the kind of visual that will age like fine wine.I don't agree with this. The castles have had regional flavor ever since the beginning. Origins had a tendency to look same-y in some ways, and 2 as well, but they were both smaller in scale (especially 2, obviously) than Inquisition. Even within that scale, I can sense an identity to the series that isn't present elsewhere. Inquisition just took all that and amplified it wonderfully.

Thread Dragon Age 4 Speculation Thread
So here's a less pleasant bit of speculation: what do we suppose the live service elements are going to be like? We know courtesy of that DA4 had a structural reboot in order to accommodate the live service model in some way. Casey Hudson (I think?) got on the twitter mic shortly thereafter claiming that all "live service" means is a continual flow of post-release content, or something to that effect. (Do not quote me directly on this one; I'm going off of memory here.) While I've seen the overall Dragon Age fanbase take Hudson's remarks at face value -- seriously, I am scared to even attempt to bring this one up in certain online circles that shall not be named -- it makes zero sense to me whatsoever that the game would need a reboot so that it can offer a ton of DLC. That's the narrative I've seen passed around, is that the reboot claim is false and we're just going to be spoiled with bucketloads of DLC is all. I... trust all of us here concur that Jason is correct on this front, and something big changed. So here's my guess. In a sense BioWare isn't lying and we'll be given quite a bit of DLC if the planned structure pans out. But what we'll discover is that plenty of plot threads will go unresolved in the release version of DA4, and it will have a short starter campaign which will be greatly expanded upon over the course of a year or more. In the vanilla version, a major threat will be brought down but other major threats will not be dealt with at all, being saved for ongoing material. In between story updates, we'll also see event months with crossover themes for not just BioWare IPs but other EA properties. Last but not least, cosmetic options at launch will be a far cry from what Inquisition offered, enabling a wider sphere of cosmetic microtransactions. Just a hunch. I'd love to be wrong about this plot approach. But if Mike Laidlaw left the company when he did because of anything pertaining to the structural reboot, I could totally see it being this drastic. And it had to be drastic to some extent anyway, right? Why else would the team need to go back to square one from a development (but probably not narrative) standpoint? It should go without saying that this is all pure supposition on my part. Furthermore, it's 4:13 in the morning over here and I'm texting this all up on my mobile while half-asleep, so it's possible I've mistakenly attributed paraphrased quotes to Casey Hudson. Regardless, it is my understanding that BioWare steeply downplayed fan concerns over Dragon Age 4 shooting for live service elements, and it would be rad if we really are just mainly looking at bonus optional story stuff (and live event fare, I guess). I'm just not sure that would be nearly enough reason to toss out plenty of work.

I'm sorry that you feel this way, but leaving aside the fact that each of the series you've cited have their fans, there is also a ton more coming out than you're giving the genre credit for. Literally any Trails game is, at worst, decent. Dragon Quest XI. Octopath Traveler. Persona 5. Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Plenty more. Thread Best and Worst pacing in open world games
I think I'll go crazy with this and list a bunch of open world games that I've played, strictly in terms of pacing. (Meaning, the list may not correlate with how I'd rank the games overall.) Now, when I think "open world pacing," I get the same idea that a few of you have already cited. Pacing is going to be an issue in the genre regardless, but how engaged do I feel on a moment-to-moment basis? I can at times consider lonely wanderings as totally engaging -- provided the atmosphere is great -- because I'm into that kind of thing. But more broadly speaking, this list has a lot to do with content variety, emotional beats, and main storyline compulsion. It's likely that not every game I list will agree with everyone's standards of what constitutes an open world game. Double whoops. 15.) The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall There was never a single moment in which I felt engaged in exploration. 14.) Assassin's Creed II Cool representations of a nifty historical period. Felt like a chore to me, anyway. 13.) The Legend of Zelda It's got some neat tricks to it and I'm a sucker for the series. But it hasn't aged well enough that I'd care to go back. 12.) Digimon World: Next Order I like the combat and it's fun wandering around with Digimon partners, but the environments are aesthetically subpar. 11.) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion It's Elder Scrolls post-Daggerfall, so fun and unexpected things happen in a vast world. Only, they're often rather same-y and don't happen often enough for my liking. 10.) Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Sailing the open seas is a gem. An absolute gem. I'd do it forever in a game of global exploration if I could. But once I made landfall, I never cared nearly as much about anything. 09.) Final Fantasy XV The story suffered hard for it, but I quite like driving around the Lucian continent. Running around on chocobos rarely gets old, and the best part is all those optional dungeons that make me feel like I'm playing a gorgeous rendition of the very first Final Fantasy. Too bad the rest of the game isn't so well-crafted to say the least. 08.) Fallout 4 Another case where the story just fails to take off, although at least in Final Fantasy XV's case there are still a few moments where I could feel a tear coming on and a handful of characters worth giving a damn about. Yet Fallout 4 outranks FFXV on this kind of list because Bethesda pulled a Bethesda; the world is a treat to traipse across. Unfortunately, most of the quests don't earn their keep by comparison. 07.) Dragon Age: Inquisition Yes, many of the zones (which arguably disqualify the game from "open world" status, I know) needed a lot more engaging content. But I think the issue can be overstated at times. There a few zones that successfully rope me in with clever quests galore. Crestwood is a good example. But even in those places where it's fetch after fetch after nothing whatsoever, the Dragon Age team made a beautiful, beautiful game with Frostbite, so all is forgiven. Except for the Forbidden Oasis. Fuck the Forbidden Oasis. 06.) Final Fantasy XII You'd be forgiven for wondering why I'd rank XII so high (again, if it even qualifies) when almost everything revolves around battling. It's true, there isn't a lot of variety in that regard. Not even relative to many prior Final Fantasies (and even XV). Like Dragon Age: Inquisition, though, I have a lovely time wandering around anyway. FFXII, for those of whom it clicks with, can be a charming continental tour with excellent music and enough storyline momentum to carry it. It'd rank higher if that momentum didn't fall apart at times, especially for a vast chunk of the second act. 05.) Fallout 3 Some would scoff at me for this, but I prefer Inon Zur's moody, post-apocalyptic tunes to the staple Americana jingles everyone always seems to have blasting through their Pip-Boy. I'll turn those on every now and then, but wandering across the ruins of a world gone by, in the middle of the night both in-game and outside of it, isn't complete without the right minimalist sounds to complement all that moodiness. That's why I love best about Fallout 3, but it has enough engaging quests and dialogue romps scattered throughout that the pacing comes out looking clean. 04.) The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind That's going to be a recurring note for most of the remainder of this list -- clean pacing. Morrowind features smarter writing than Fallout 3, too, and while I'm not quite as enchanted with the alien game world as some, I still quite appreciate it. There are some bizarre beauties to be seen; sunsets over purple dunes; the moon rising over giant mushroom things. This is a game that has to be experienced firsthand to be understood. 03.) Fallout: New Vegas Ever-cleverer writing holds New Vegas up so high, creating a terrific sense of pacing out of a world which just doesn't interest me as much as several others here in terms of active exploration. In other sorts of lists, New Vegas would place lower. If I were simply ranking open worlds from an aesthetic perspective, hot damn, this wouldn't be it. But there's no dearth of things to do -- damn near ever -- as you encounter all kinds of memorable characters seemingly at every turn. 02.) The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Overall, Skyrim's writing isn't as great as a fair few of these other games. There are blatantly missed opportunities to make things feel more urgent, and to make me care more about the extended cast. I'd still take the writing here over Oblivion's, mind you, but Morrowind's is on another level. So what gets Skyrim so far? Hundreds of hours in, and I still can't get enough of its titular realm. There's a majesty about it, and a sense of bitter loss and primal courage, that still shines nine years in and will continue to shine for many years to come. And though there are far too many instances of dead people in caves and bandit ambushes you saw coming from kilometers away, there are also enough heartfelt questlines (especially in the DLCs!) to mostly make up for that problem. Bethesda knocked it out of the park with this game. 01.) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild What can I say that hasn't been said? I could link you my LTTP for it, but it's already been read plenty, and there are folks who have penned better tributes besides. All I can tell you is that I can understand why Breath of the Wild doesn't work for some, but I am part of the majority here who thinks it's more than justified as a critical darling and sales evergreen. "But you hardly even do anything," some will argue. Maybe. But I was stunned by how many towns there were strewn throughout, and each town's population drew me in, made me care, and gave me a sense of heroism that cannot be rivaled. What matters more is everything in-between those towns; Hyrule is the leading character in Breath of the Wild, and it's a Hyrule so vast and yet so perfectly handcrafted that I "worry" we'll never see anything quite like it again. I don't need hundreds of intricate dialogue-centric quests in every game I play; I want that on the regular from certain other developers, because it's their bread and butter, but for Zelda I want to be set free and ride a horse across a mystical land filled with charm. I got so much more than that here.

Thread Which 3D mainline Pokémon games thus far have been your favorites?
Yeah, I’m in a Pokémon mood this week. So there’s a fairly common consensus among Pokémon fans that the older, 2D generations are generally superior to the newer, 3D generations. This isn’t to say that some don’t feel otherwise; especially in the case of younger players, I’d imagine there’s real pushback against the idea. But among the older crowd, at least, I think it’s the majority opinion. As a result, there’s been a lot of discussion as to what exactly the 3D installments have lacked that the 2D years, especially throughout the DS era, had in spades. But something I’ve seen less often is 3D-only chatter — barring drive-bys from people chiming in real fast that they “all suck” or that a particular entry sucks the most. :P So whether you’re a big fan of certain 3D entries or choosing between modern mainline Pokémon games is like pulling teeth, I challenge you: share with us which games are your favorites! No lamenting that Platinum had better postgame, or HeartGold/SoulSilver’s gameplay variety is so much better, or Yellow’s Pikachu cries used to put you to sleep on a hammock in your dad’s backyard and nothing else will ever compare. Just pure, 3D-versus-3D discourse. For my money, and speaking as someone who has completed an entry in each pair of 3D games except USUM (I’ll get to them soon), I would say Sun and Moon are my favorites. I understand why the linearity and intense cutscene repetition are major turn-offs for folks; really, I do. I’m not the biggest fan, either. But I enjoy Alola more than Galar and certainly more than Kalos. I like its vibe. I love how much Game Freak experimented with proven formulas. Totem Pokémon are rad! I’m grateful for the sheer number of “random” little events featuring various Pokémon throughout the island chain. And I love some of the story beats, especially the growth of Lillie and the true villainy in her relations. Sun and Moon aren’t perfect, but that’s OK. I like them a ton, anyway.

Your career is on the line. Think about financial success and failure. Don’t just type everything you want in a hurry — unless you’re certain that everything you want is profitable. What do you focus on? Which aspects do you let fall by the wayside a little in order to improve upon other features? Where do you draw the line? Do you keep the current graphical style, try something new in the 3D space, or maybe even push for a 2D vibe? Do you try to convince your peers that a more complex world design is necessary or do you not care so much about that part? How do you revamp the online functionality? What kinds of music would you like for the soundtrack? All these questions are yours to answer. Your very own Pokémon directorial journey is about to begin...

Thread If you love Xenogears, it's imperative you play/watch Xenosaga III (Spoiler Warning Inside)
Xenosaga’s legacy preservation status occupies that small, sad region where remastering isn’t even a fan fever dream; it was actually addressed by a producer but the idea did not pick up traction and now it’s a direct no. Given the ongoing success of Xenoblade, it’s a tragic state of affairs.

Many people played it. Many people who played it generally liked or even loved it (though some, of course, did not). Also, the world is pretty much on fire. The discourse around Part 1 will regain momentum as we gain information on Part 2. In the meantime, JRPG threads will reference it. Final Fantasy threads will spark essays about it. And most other threads here will largely ignore it -- which is kind of natural even when the world on fire.

I was invited to a friend's work party in 2015 and everyone was dressed like Mario characters. The costumes were fabulous. The drinks were delicious. The romantic aspects were mutually agreeable and invited the prospect of future sexual relations. If we're restricted to official entries, however, I would say 6.

We'd probably be speaking in terms of 2030s projects at that point and I'd prefer not to crane my neck quite so far into the future. But sure, I mean, I adore FFVII Remake thus far and I wouldn't mind seeing similar treatment given to at least FFVI.

Even if this didn't screw up my job situation for obvious reasons, the stipulation involving not being allowed to go back and play these games even after the launches of the PS6/Nextbox just make it patently ridiculous. I'd only begin thinking seriously about this around $350k or so. At that point, I'm set to cover my bills for a few years and enjoy the rest of life to the fullest, so it begins to appeal to me. I'd still need to think things through, though. Missing the Switch successor in particular would Jesus, right. That just makes this even less appealing to me, ha.

Thread Did The Last Of Us Part II Live Up To Your Expectations?
I didn't like it as much as I had hoped that I would. The story is a bold and beautiful mess. Bold, beautiful, and messy stories often click for me in exciting and unusual ways and can go on to become some of my favorites around. But that isn't always the case, and in the case of TLoU 2, it felt like less than the sum of its parts. There are some incredible moments in there but in the final telling I just wasn't as invested as I needed to be in order to step away from the credits and say that I was truly satisfied. That said, I do believe I am in the minority here. I'm happy to see that so many players love the game this much.

Thread Which Pokémon games have the best campaigns? Which have the worst? And why?
I’ve been playing Pokémon Platinum lately as sort of a “just before sleep and/or prior to my cat usurping my entire right arm as her pillow” gig and I’ve been steadily impressed with not just the diversity of the game’s world but also the length of its campaign. It’s by no means some Xenogears-sized epic in clock time, nor should it be, but Sinnoh has a lot going on and the story events occur with enough frequency to keep me from beelining straight to the Pokémon League in no time at all. Added together with the fact that the game isn’t even a hyper-linear adventure a la Sun and Moon, and I’m thinking maybe Platinum is my favorite installment in this regard. But I’ve also rather enjoyed a few other Pokémon campaigns. Hoenn’s springs to mind, specifically Emerald’s version. And while Alola is indeed an exercise in railroading, I still had a good time admiring the scenery and soaking in the storyline. (I haven’t played USUM yet, for the record.) My last time with Johto was way back in Crystal, if memory serves, but the aesthetic has stuck with me well enough that I have a feeling I’ll enjoy my traipse across HGSS rather nicely after I finish Platinum. That said, I do remember folks frequently stating that Johto itself is disappointingly short, and I’m pretty Kanto’d out again after LGPE, so we’ll see how highly I wind up ranking all that jazz later. I can’t wrap up my own thoughts without tossing an honorable mention out toward the Unova games; I don’t care for Unova itself quite as much as I do Hoenn and Sinnoh, but I think Gen V is the gold standard in storytelling. That alone warrants a high ranking in my campaign quality thoughts! As for downright weaker campaigns, I reckon it’s a matter of listing what’s left. I grew up on Kanto first like many other thirty-somethings but I don’t really hold it in super high regard. I don’t dislike adventuring across the OG island, but I don’t exactly crave RBY/FRLG/LGPE replays either. Sword and Shield’s campaign was weak on several levels; the lively assortment of rival figures and growing array of locations courtesy of the expansion pass are helping me to reassess, but the story was so hands-off and the lack of dungeons and routes so linear they make Alola blush... doesn’t add up to a big winner for me. Still, I dig both Kanto and Galar more than I do Kalos, not just in map design but in storyline as well. I know the XY hate is common around here, and I don’t mean to belittle Gen VI fans (...I’m sure you exist somewhere?) but apart from Mega Evolutions I’m not into it much at all. What about y’all? Favorite campaigns? Least favorites? What do you look for in them most of all — postgame depth? Overall difficulty? Length? Location diversity? I’d turn this into a poll but I don’t want to simply list generations, since when we add in all the remakes and the friends we’ve made along the way, I’d actually be leaving several choices off the list.

Thread It's been 8 Years, What was the CORRECT Mass Effect 3 Ending choice?
Oh yeah, I hear you, man. It’s downright comical how little sense it makes. I just wish the Destroy narration sequence had much emotional impact on me. It really kind of doesn’t. It’s not that I dislike Hackett or anything but I feel more attuned to Shepard’s narration in Control and far more attuned to EDI’s in Synthesis. (Say what you want about the character but Tricia Helfer is amazing in that sequence.) The other thing that hurts Destroy for me is that the whole split-second “Shepard lives!” bit has never done anything for me. Well, that’s not true. I chuckle dryly at it every time I see it. I get that the brevity is the point but the point flies straight past me as a result. lol

Thread RTTP: Pokemon Platinum - Now featuring 20% less mud and snow
Hey, this was a great writeup and this thread is deserving of more attention than it received. I’m really excited to play Platinum for the first time. I played Pearl when it came out but as far as I can recall that is my sole experience with Sinnoh. Lately, with all the woe over the bulk of Galar’s routes being so short and straightforward, I’ve been desperately craving more encounters with the Game Freak design philosophies of old. From the sounds of things in this thread, and based on all the talk that I have seen about how Pokemon games apparently started becoming increasingly linear because kids were getting lost in Mount Coronet, I’m practically bursting with excitement. Team Galactic seems rad too and the addition of the dimensional thing (I forget what it’s called) is neat as well. I really don’t even remember enough about my launch playthrough of Pearl to recall what the deal is with Galactic and the box legendaries and all that jazz.

I had an acquaintance in the film industry (I guess I still do, but we've drifted apart) and back when said acquaintance was doing tech stuff for various productions she had the honor of chatting with Kate Mulgrew a few times during cigarette breaks. That is to say, I'm sure there are better options out there but I'm in a mood right now so please also give me information pertaining to this. Drive-bys like "Just play Eternal lol" won't help me. :P So anyway. Is this game a microtransaction festival? Is it totally pay-to-win? If I play against the AI alone, can I get away with not dropping too much cash? I want to practice because I'd like to play IRL at the local comics shop when the United States ever recovers from coronavirus. <_< I've played maybe three times in all the years since turning 15 or so. To say that I'm inexperienced would be an understatement. I win against the fellow who played against me in the intervening years, but to be honest it had nothing to do with my skill and more to do with the fact that he was always drunk as a skunk when we played. Anyone here have firsthand experience? What'd you think?

Up to 2x08 now. I still feel kind of weird about them including the Solomon Drive short story during 2x06 but I am less against it now than I was when the episode premiered. I kind of hope they don't do stuff like that during Season 3 though. It's nice seeing the ancillary content being brought into the adaptation but the show's ratings aren't strong so I'd rather they focus on blasting through the books (without rushing of course).

Thread The Expanse |S2| You guys look like shit
As much as I love this season, the finale doesn't completely work for me. The scenes with the creature, while gorgeously-produced, are hampered somewhat by the insular set and a bit too much back-and-forth editing work. The scenes above Venus mess with the pacing a little, too, because those just aren't characters that are going to stick with people compared to the rest of them, and we hadn't seen them at all in the previous, fantastic, episode. The rest of the finale performs its functions well, though. It's kind of an awkward place to leave things for 2017, but as someone who's read this volume of the source material I get where they're coming from. It's nice emotional stuff where the crew of the Roci really comes together and reflects (while doing battle, heh). And the Bobbie/Avasarala side of the plot basically shoots for a similar spin. On SyFy, The Expanse draws a weekly crowd of ~550k-750k. I don't know how it fares on Netflix and Amazon. I hope it does OK. I've said it before and I'll say it again: this is a show that deserves so much more awareness than it gets.
