See, I really like the more reserved designs of the protagonists. I think a lot of series trip into making their cast look kinda clownish - just too much stuff going on. Not always debilitatingly so, but to their detriment, at least. Nobara in particular looks just excellent to me. Mostly, what I like about it is some really good character writing. They feel more like actual people to me than most shonen protags, who tend to be defined by a single overwhelming character trait. In a sense, much like the outfits, they characterizations are also more reserved, which I enjoy. Other than Gojo, who is wildly over the top in more ways than one.

We don't really have a good index for how strong he is, I think. He's expended roughly the same amount of effort in every fight so far - minimal, in all of them. Even Mahito would be a non-fight, I think. There just isn't anybody around who can touch him.

Thinking about all the really terrible translations I've read... JJK doesn't rate, lol. At least this is mostly grammatically sensible, so many series I've read that feel like they were translated by somebody who didn't speak English at all. Really, a good editor could at least fix those. Here it feels more like a lack of communication, making it clear that Ougi is supposed to be a person and not a group, etc etc.

The thing is, Ruunan's is just such a huge damage buff, between the AS and the extra attack, and RFC adds consistency, range, and, again, a bunch of AS. They synergize well with each other too. Kalista with both of those and a Guinsoos will shred most teams, almost comp independent. .

Mmm I will say, I have noticed that recurve bow derivatives have sorta taken over the game. The AA characters strongly prefer them to more attack damage, and most of the spellcasting characters don't get nearly as much value out of their items. Only exception is the jeweled gauntlet and quicksilver cloak.

The issue is I think more about opportunity costs. Sure, you could put a Zephyr on somebody, if that's all that you can make, and it's better than having them on the bench... but if you could turn that belt into a Sunfire Cape and the cloak into a Runaan's that's almost always better.

Sunfire I think is strong partly because it works best against the aa heavy lines, and also because it's free stat-independent damage. Sort of a consequence of the Champs that're strong. Agreed on the other items also being fairly heavily nerfed. But Nidalee at least does build Shojin.

So, I read this manga, , and it got me to redownload this. Naturally I decided to bash my head against the wall that is Zheng Jiang again, but this time, the later start is actually working out. I kept refusing merc contracts until I'd captured the iron mines near her start, then I took one... from Cao Cao... to go fight Lu Bu. I shoed up right when Cao Cao himself was about to assault Lu Bu's one stronghold and so collected a few thousand gold Lu Bu's own personal spear for basically nothing. Meanwhile, Liu Bei took the city north of me, sadly, but I got another mercenary contract from Cao Cao to fight somebody who had the city straight south. Meanwhile, he was smashing the hell out of this dude everywhere else (I have no idea why Cao Cao kept hiring me, he didn't need the help), so I got a basically free city out of it. Was the guy's last province too. At which point, Lu Bu (who had joined Liu Bei) did the Lu Bu thing and snagged 4 of Liu Bei's territories in a rebellion. But I noticed he didn't have much in the way of actual armies, so I grabbed a basically-free farm province so I had everything in the commandery. After a few turns staring across a river between the farm province and a small city with a full stack worth of Lu Bu, I decided to take a risk and moved up into Ambush stance. He took the bait. Ambush failed and I was looking a pretty dire prospect, with 0 forests to take advantage of my vanguard deployment in, a small edge in numbers that was more or less negated by him having 2 units of heavy cav, and of course Lu Bu himself. I tried to get fancy and set up on a small island in a river, but it turns out shallow water doesn't do shit to cav charges and he ended up sweeping away basically all of my archers. Then something weird happened. He was refusing to duel Zheng Jiang, so I just had her follow him around and take potshots, and after a few of those he just sorta... went down? Like, really easily. After that it turned into a bit of a clusterfuck. Lu Zheng and her whole detachment got routed, as did most of my other units, but I'd snagged a legendary Vanguard general and gave him Lu Bu's spear, so between him and Zheng Jiang they managed to just grind out the remaining enemies like they were playing a Dynasty Warriors game. Was kind of ridiculous. But now I've got that city of his. He sued for peace while he was besieging it, and I was low on dude, so I took the money. Now I'm just looking for my next expansion opportunity. And hopefully some more money so I can get a second army off the ground.

Sure, but if you read all those examples, there's a lot more to it than "this region is the only place to get salt, and this one is the only place to get iron, and this is the only place to get..." honestly, I've forgotten what kingdom 3's thing is, and there's a very good reason for that. That kind of mutual interdependency means that they can't afford to ever go to war with each other unless you think you can achieve complete decisive victory in a very short period. If they wanted to get into how the holy kingdom's high taxation rate on their salt exports drove up prices across the continent and generated huge resentment, that I would be here for. But this is oversimplified to the point of being nonsensical.

Okay this is bugging me. The three powers in this game are said to be defined by their monopolistic hold over certain resources, which drives conflict (?!? but anyway). The holy kingdom's resource monopoly in this game is salt. But the good guy kingdom sits astride the continent's largest river. Rivers inevitably empty out into the ocean. Oceans are full of salt. Why don't they just... go downriver to get them some salt (And it's because of the alliteration)

I could see it, though considering the character stories we've gotten so far, I'm not super optimistic there, either. Man, I just wish one of these games would put in the effort on the politics/worldbuilding stuff. So many of these settings come off as exactly the same, and their idea of what conflict and machinations look like is almost laughable. There's all these moments in the demo where people go "what could that archduke be planning?!?" as if he hadn't just successfully taken over one of the only two rival powers on the continent. Why on earth are people looking for another motive? It's just sloppy.

A recurring theme in anti-semitism (and white supremacy and fascism more broadly) is the transparently implausible apology. The point is to be disbelieved by your critics and victims while providing enough cover for yourself if possible. It's about driving home the power imbalance and asserting control over the truth. "Look while I lie directly to your face. Yeah, I misspelled Jewelry, oops! Happens to best of us, definitely pay no attention to the star of David." I'm willing to give it a few issues. I've spent enough time watching wacky police procedural that I'd the mysteries or cast are good I can try one as a manga.

Messed around with this a bit. Got through the first battle. The aesthetic is gorgeous (not just the graphics, the character design is aces), the gameplay is fun, and the writing is... well, it's bad. It's not Fates, but it's not good. The worldbuilding strikes me as incredibly shallow, the "political" conflict, doubly so. The core conceit - that there's three nations on the continent (why do all of these JRPG medieval Europes have 2-3 countries at most?), each of which has one resource the others cannot do without, is just... it's dumb. That's a recipe for an interesting Cold War premise, not an ongoing open conflict - they can't afford to go to war with each other, they need the others too much. So the whole thing feels kinda hackneyed from the word jump. The dialogue is appropriately old-timey, but not nearly as strong as it could be. VA work doesn't help with that. Honestly, given that this is the studio that gave us Octopath, I shouldn't really be surprised that the story is... less than promising. Still. The gameplay great. It's adapted some mechanics from Octopath in a very interesting way, and there seems to be a lot of nuance to the tactics. I could see myself putting a lot of hours into that. And it's pretty. I just wish that the writing was better... maybe the full story will pick up somewhere down the line.

Wish I could've gotten a plat and gone for 9-elderwood but ended up doing 6 (w/ a Chosen), 3 Dragonsoul, 3 Mage, 3 Brawler. Totally screwed up my Shyvana items so that made me sweat a little (accidentally slapped something on her I didn't mean to) but ultimately the synergies are just so strong by themselves that it doesn't matter much. Although getting that round 3 Nunu Veigar drop certainly didn't hurt. There was somebody else going Elderwood, even had the exact same Chosen, but their secondary was Executioner to tie in with Xayah, who I skipped in favor of Shyv and eventually Swain. Xin Zhao, huh. I can't say I'm a fan of him. Always feels really anemic. Here, I had the Duelist spat on Yone along with an Ionic Spark and a Quicksilver, then a Deathblade and Fist of Justice (or whatever it's called) on Yone. Shen got the tank items. Stuck a Thieves' Glove on Lee Sin, that actually put in some work. My issue with trying to carry through Kalista here is that I only got the 2 Recurve Bows, and I needed one of them for the spat item, so there just weren't a lot of good items to stick on Kalista. Plus I was drowning in Long Swords. (Truth be told I was going for the 3 Adept quest this go 'round, thus the focus on Yone. Just surprised it worked out this well.)

But your art style can absolutely be dependent on your gameplay systems. Strategy games need your models to be readable at a glance at a great distance, which requires brighter colors and more exaggerated proportions, just as an example. Or maybe there's an effect you really like but it creates too much visual noise for your player to be able to land their shots in your FPS. Etc etc.

Sure, I guess. All I'm really trying to say is that I get why they did it and I think it's a fair enough reason that I don't really feel like it's worth getting upset about. Never say die, but given that we've gotten a teaser for the next game of an older Liara finding a ruined piece of Shepard's armor I wouldn't count on the happy ending mod in particular. And in general, taking nods from fan content is a great way to introduce legal issues for yourself down the line. I know some places don't even let their workers see (or admit to seeing) fan content precisely to avoid problems like that. I think the ending might get tweaked a little, so that they can set up one canon version, but that's about it.

Good chapter was good. I liked the pages of dialogue, very nice establishing technique. Tokyo is cut off from the rest of Japan, the Japanese government is in turmoil, cursed spirits meant to be secret (was wondering about that for a while now), and it looks like the official line is that cursed spirits are a Tokyo-specific thing since that's where the chaos is concentrated. I'd expect that they're just retconning Rika being gone. Always felt like it'd be hard to do Yuta without her. And yes, WHERE IS NOBARA

Okay, I think I got it all: Getwo went throughout the country marking 2 types of people. Those with the potential to become cursed vessels, and those with the potential to become sorcerers. The former he additionally had eat some kind of sealed cursed object. When he ate Mahito, he gained the ability to those marks, and in so doing, changed people with potential into people with actual powers. Then he undid the string, which unsealed those cursed objects he gave to the vessels. THEN all those cursed spirits showed up because he'd made deals to lock them away that were apparently made null and void at some point. The point of all this was to basically return Japan to a time when cursed energy and sorcerers were much more common, so he can work on somehow unlocking human potential, which whatshername thinks is best done by cutting people from cursed energy like Megumi's dad did. Which... if he's the model, fair. The stuff about other countries, I'm less clear on. The crux of the issue is that thanks to some particular circumstances, you mostly only get people who can use cursed energy in Japan, thanks to Tensen's Barrier. So creating a very clear and visible Jujustu Sorcerer Gap would piss off other nations at Japan. That's the US (and I think I saw China highlighted?) reference. But why the Middle East? Could be that you can turn cursed energy into... like, regular energy. So it's an oil competitor. But it's not like that's not happening with other alternative energy sources right now. Could be there's some competing spiritual tradition to be worried about from there, which would be interesting. I always like it when other magical systems intrude in stories like this. But if that were the case I'd expect it to be the Vatican or something, just because of how often that kinda thing comes up in manga.

So, it's been a rough couple of weeks, and I was needing some comfort food TV. Netflix popped SG-1 into my queue, and I went "sure, why the hell not." I'd seen the whole series before, but it's episodic, pretty easy to rewatch, and I figured why not? In my memory, I thought of it as a decent but problematic and kinda formulaic show. And to an extent, it is. The early stuff with Carter in particular is profoundly clumsy and kinda embarassing, it's very hoo-rah about the Air Force, and there's some weird and kind of embarrassing stereotypes in the early seasons when a lot of the episodes were them going to various formerly-Go'auld occupied worlds. And the less said about the Replicators' CGI the better. But overall, I'm just kinda impressed with how well it holds up overall, most notably in how it handles the civilian vs. military stuff and the driving force of the plot as the show goes on. While it's certainly enthusiastic about the military (how could it not be, given the pitch), it also doesn't ever really shy away from repeatedly putting a spotlight on how Daniel and the other cultural experts (and Hammond) are keeping the SGC moral, contrasting it strongly with the shady intelligence agency stereotype over at the NID. Kinsey rolls in and certainly comes off as the "ugh stupid bureaucrats getting in the way of what has to be done!", but over time it resolves into a much clearer picture - Kinsey wraps himself in the cloak of accountability and responsible behavior, but his ties to the NID show him as just being a regular hypocrite. Other political and civilian figures are much more sympathetic, often contrasting with characters like O'Neill, who's too quick to write off the soft touch approach. And while the show certainly episodic, I'd forgotten how damn continuity dense it is. Characters and events from seemingly one-off episodes will get referenced or even focused on seasons later. The core conceit of the show - that they're going out there to find allies and resources and technology to defend earth - gives them a good reason to bring back past bits of weirdness that in a Star Trek TNG type show would normally just be forgotten. The virtual reality planet gave us Teal'c stuck in a video game literally 3+ seasons later, the time they got turned into robots had the robots come back. Teal'c also apparently learned how to drive when they got thrown back in time to 1969 (which formed the basis of a later time travel episode, too!). And then there's the stuff I remembered it doing well, like characters (Christopher Judge does not get enough credit for Teal'c, dude is fantastic) and the march of the SGC's technology. I just watched the ep where they show off gate-fired missiles, where the Go'auld reacts to being painted with a targeting laser by... trying to flick it off of their shirt. That shit is FUNNY, and it highlights how far they've come from early eps where they were just barely figuring out how to take the fight back to the snakes. SG-1 definitely has its problems, and I'm not gonna try to defend them from those. But overall? I'm very pleased to go back to a show I remembered fondly and find that it's actually as good as I remember it was.

I still say Kamo really is Kamo because otherwise... what's the point? Maybe there was somebody else in the body initially, but it'd be dumb to repeat the trope. The mind we're dealing with is probably the mind that did the stuff that earned Kamo his rep. Maybe that's the original Kamo, maybe it's somebody else that assumed the identity, but I figure it's still "the most evil sorcerer in history," and I'd wager on that person's real name being Kamo.

What really struck me about the animation this episode is how smart it was - the shots were well-composited to get the most out of everything. Like, Yuuji vs. the 3 transformed humans on the rooftop. They pull back so you can see everything, don't even bother drawing in his face for most of it, and the resulting animation is just soooooo smooth. It's great.

I with lore (and a 10k foot pitch on mechanics). Everybody approaches the process differently, I guess. My advice would be... I guess it depends on what kind of game it is. You could start with some core setting aspect that appeals to you and work outwards from there. If you want to tie your mechanics into the lore, come up with a setting-appropriate rephrasing of how they work and expand from there. Or, coming up with one key thing that makes you go "oooh that's cool" is a great way to get the ball rolling. Maybe you want to include a particular place or character or moment - flesh that out, then figure out how everything adjacent to it/them works, then everything adjacent to those things, and so on. Like, when I'm thinking about the story, sometimes I'll start acting out scene in my head, then I'll go write down all the dialogue and stage direction, figure out who everybody in the scene is, what their roles are, their histories, etc etc. And the next thing you know I've invented the system of government and theological history for my invading empire. It's really impressively easy to work with. Can't imagine trying to put together my own engine, I'm still wrestling with blueprints XD

This is a good point. With so many jujutsu sorcerers killed or badly hurt, and Gojo sealed, can they afford to throw Yuji away? The counter-argument, of course, is that with so many jujutsu sorcerers killed or badly hurt and Gojo sealed, they can't afford to risk Sukuna seizing control. Altho given how strong Sukuna is now, I wonder if they even kill him. Like, even if Yuji wanted to let himself be killed, it's possible Sukuna could seize control of his dead body or some shit. Or he activates the pact and escapes, but the higher-ups don't know about that.

Basically, we leave decisions like that up to the population of the thread, unless there's some special circumstances that force us to adopt wider spoiler policies, like in the TLOU2 leaks. For example, in the Cosmere OT, people prefer to have spoiler tagged, because it's a very large number of books released over a very long period but they're all interconnected. If people insist on violating the thread's chosen spoiler policies, we'll threadban them because... well, at that point, they're just being a jerk. One thing you see a lot for anime series that started as manga is having a manga OT, which is free spoiler for all released material, and an anime OT, where spoilers from the source material have to be tagged, like you said. Could be a model if there's enough people interested in talking about the books. Anyway, if you're not sure what y'all want that policy to be, I'd recommend putting up a poll.

I think people sorta missed this thing in the prison fight, but it's good to see it hitting home this time: Sukuna is Yuji's super-powered evil side, but the emphasis is on "evil," not "superpowered." He's not like Hollow Ichigo, a part of Yuji that he needs to reckon with and master to improve. He's not the Nine-Tailed Fox, a somewhat-misunderstood force of nature, pissed off but reasonable if you can talk them down. Sukuna acts for two reasons and two reasons advancing his goals (whatever those may be), and fucking up Yuji's life. He got what he needed out of Yuji when the kid made the pact, so he's not going to pop out and help on demand. He can't be reasoned with, he can't be talk-no-jutsu'd, and he is absolutely going to be brought around to be Yuji's friend. Unless an enemy directly threatens him, his interests, or his ego, he's going to remain purely a negative force in Yuji's life. Sukuna is a monster, and that's the beginning, middle, and end of it, barring some dramatic future revelation. Part of why I like the character so much, tbh.

Right, I'd forgotten that one of Choso's brothers got hit with it too.Hmmm I was thinking that maybe it was Yuji's cursed technique - we don't know who his parents are, it's possible he's supposed to inherit something. But it's hard to square that with his clearly superhuman abilities - which we know are the result of taking on some great restriction. His parents could have given him a restriction that he couldn't use it deliberately, so it would only activate spontaneously when he's in great danger, but that doesn't really feel like it would merit being able to throw cars at people. Maybe it's related but tangentially. It could be some kind of protection he was given alongside the restriction, somehow. Sort of a very abstract barrier. Flipside, it could just be #1. Sukuna has some weirdass powers, as evidenced by him somehow managing to match Jougo using a cursed technique he really shouldn't (controlling and producing fire), given the rules as we understand them. Maybe he's got some mind juju. I doubt he'd be able to restrain himself from gloating, though. Ooooooh kinda depressing twist - this has been happening for a very long time. Yuji's grandpa? Not actually his grandpa. Found him when he was distressed after his parents died or abandoned him and the barrier/power/whatever him he was Yuji's grandpa.

Fushiguro's dad still seems to be the top level of what's possible by using this method - he gave up his access to cursed power, but not his ability to see curses. Could be he just lost more in the trade than Yuji by doing it that way, but whatever Yuji lost was impressive enough to make him his ridiculous superhuman self.

Added dimension, so far this has only happened to people who were putting Yuji in direct danger themselves. Grandpa the attempted child killer! Anyway, the more I think on it, the less likely I think that it's Sukuna. Yes, we only saw this happen for the first time Yuji got brought back to life, but like... Sukuna is a of things, but subtle is one of them. Yes, he keeps secrets, yes, he manipulates people, but he's too proud to downplay anything. He's incredibly cocksure and lives to flaunt. If he was saving Yuji on the regular, he would be rubbing the kid's nose in it. I honestly don't think he could help himself. ... Although... since he erase Yuji's memory after his deal, he might want to act without making wonder why he was helping him. Though I think he could probably get away with pretending he's getting soft. And it's sort of a weird way to go about doing it - even if he did want to use some kind of mental attack on people trying to hurt Yuji, wouldn't you expect it to be more... Sukuna? Blood, brimstone, giant piles of skulls? But maybe the idea is to revert the memories when he's ready to take control so all of Yuji's "friends" he picked up along the way because of this without knowing why suddenly turn on him. Sort of an emotional torture. Or a way to get around the terms of the deal... Gah, now I'm not sure again.

I'd reckon it probably wasn't the case for that ancestor that got killed by Megumi's ancestor, either. I think we can basically take it on faith that nobody currently operating is at Gojo's level. Certain events feel like they fire off earlier than expected, and the result is a strange lack of urgency throughout a lot of the book. I only felt it in the flashback chapters, tbh - they covered a lot of ground we already mostly knew. At some point there's going to have to be a "sit down and exposit about the Cosmere at great length" chapter and it's going to be dreadful but it's kinda necessary at this point. Gotta get the relevant perspectives in the same room and hammer things out. There were two little ones here, but they're couched in deliberate mystery in one case and metaphor in the other, so it's not exactly helpful. I'd honestly have figured that the characters would get a better education for themselves after the events of Oathbringer, but I guess they were happy to let sleeping dogs lie, mostly. My brain, it is swirling. So much shit changed at the very very end of this one. Goddamn. Edit: Okay a few thoughts in no particular order

I don't know how much I'd spread blame out on this, tbh. Ever since labor rights got blown up in the 70s, we've been heading in one direction and one direction only: corporate squeezes workers to get as much product for as little money as possible. Creative industries were doing better on that front due to strong unionization and the fundamental fact that if you screw over your artists you get shitty art in a way that isn't really true to the same extent of, say, manufacturing - you can set a procedure and get people to follow it exactly and so long as you do that, you'll have about the same quality of lugnut or whatever at the end of the day (though there's huge caveats there as well, naturally), but movies and writing doesn't work like that. Formula works until it doesn't, and you need to keep people happy to avoid ending up in a lurch. But ever since Google and Facebook kicked off the contraction of the internet and set the expected price of digital services at "free but ad supported," investors have been trying their damndest to get the effect to replicate over. As much content for as little money as possible. Look at what happened to Deadspin and news media generally - same shit. It's the core of the dynamics with Spotify, too. A lot of artists hate the service, but it's free, so people use it, which makes it incredibly hard to sell music directly (unless you're Mariah Carey or somebody), which gives Spotify more power to screw over artists. What's unclear in all this is that it's actually , or if it's just investors feeling like dividends are more important than actual longterm success. Sure, there's some new business models that are extremely appealing, but it's not clear if they're actually sustainable without massively fucking over employees - or, in fact, sustainable. at all. To invoke the earlier examples, Spotify is still l, last I checked, losing money. Deadspin is functionally dead. But oh boy, investors sure do love moves like the ones they made. Investment market bears no relationship to reality anymore, which creates all kinds of perverse incentives. So I don't think that this is "Corporate pushing boundaries to try and survive" vs. "artists struggling with change." I think it's just corporate fucks being corporate fucks. Maybe if there was some kind of history of them not being corporate fucks I'd be inclined to give them more of the benefit of the doubt, but like, the foundation of modern American business practices is "fuck over your workers as hard as you can so you can please your shareholders no matter what it does to the health of the company" so I really have no idea why anyone would assume anything else is happening here.

I would count that as backpedaling. Tho I wonder if it'd be enough for some of the talent. Some folks won't be happy without a public apology, and for preference, heads on pikes. It's a bit of a balancing act tbh. You're right that compared to a really active regular thread, a pinned thread is less visible. But for threads that don't get a lot of posts, being in the regular section is death. Falls off the front page and into the memory hole. Unfortunately, I feel like this is more the latter, so it'll stay pinned for now. We'll probably do some site-wide alerts later in the year as stuff like the registration deadline approaches to help boost visibility.I can talk to the tech team, but all that occurs to me off the top of my head is pinning a duplicate thread with the same OP that links to this one, which would be unpinned. Takes a couple volumes to really get rolling but hoo boy. It's got this great, organic worldbuilding with a refreshing lack of power tiers, and it's not afraid to take a swing at real-deal social issues and politics. Yeah, but that's usually something they do to sell the bad guy's invulnerability to an old power, thus inspiring growth. Having them *completely* no-sell the attack with that growth factored in is a lot more unusual. Even if the hero's new power isn't up to snuff, they'll usually at least get a "not a bad hit" kind of reaction. This fucker didn't even stop giggling.

There are martial artists in it, and they fight with martial arts, but like - it's not that. I think the HxH comparison is a lot better, right down to setting "rules" that can empower you in some ways while restricting you in others. I think Nobara is sort of the illustrative example. If you have a character whose fighting style is "pound nails in monsters and make them explode," that's not really a martial arts series any more lol.

I mean, Elderwood/Brawlers was always more Brawlers than Elderwood - just taking advantage of the fact that 2 of the Brawlers were Elderwood to snag an easy carry option in Ashe or, if you had to, Veigar (though Ashe was so so so much stronger because of the WW synergy, as well as being pretty busted in her own right). Without that, Brawlers is kind of lacking a hard damage source. Vi means you probably want something AD, but nobody else really synergizes that well off the top of my head.

Huh. It's funny, I'm going through Way of Kings again for a series reread and both of these things are what I'd highlight as the weakest parts of his writing, compared to a lot of other authors (as a most recent point of comparison, I've just read Django Wexler's new book , as well as and by K.J. Parker). I'd point to Sander's plots as great, and of course his worldbuilding is very cool, but the character writing is just okay, and I'm noticing a lot of "stop and explain stuff" moments in the narration that can make it read a little jerky at times. Overall, when I think prose in fantasy, my first thought is usually somebody like Sir Terry Pratchett. Not measuring up to Discworld is hardly a real hit on an author, though, because... what does?

The idea that basic physical and mental capacity are used as insults really harmful. There's not really any two ways about that. But it's also really, really hard to do. This language is so closely woven into the way we speak, even the way we , on a level that it becomes genuinely insidious. I've made progress but it's slow going, because whenever you're not 100% on it, it just... slips back in. We don't process terms like dumb and stupid and moron as in the same way, because as a society, we've never really reckoned with disability discrimination in the same way we have other types (not to say that we're anywhere close to solving those, mind). So even if the big faiths lose a little distinctiveness under the new system I think it'll be made up for in how many options it gives everybody else.

There's this thing people say about a lot of Shonen series, ones that seem like they're doing things differently but not differently enough. "It's like a regular shonen, just really well executed," basically. Radiant is what those series look like if that was actually true all of the time. It doesn't do a lot that's really unusual but absolutely every bit of it is just so, so well done on every level. Like folks mentioned, very diverse cast, and it makes a really strong effort to shuck a lot of genre conventions in interesting places. No firm power tiers at any point, just good action and some real emotional beats. Very, very excited to pick up the new volume.

Yeah, TPGW is done. It was an interesting pitch, though I was skeptical of how they'd manage to turn it into an actual series. Seems that the plagiarism angle sunk it so quickly they never got a chance to do anything at all. What an odd thing to have a hangup on. This is an audience that has accepted some genuinely incredibly reprehensible behavior from main characters, like, legit "go to jail and throw away the key if you do this in real life" stuff, but apparently plagiarism is a pain point.

Finally got around to watching the conclusion! They're setting up some cool stuff with the Shadow and Eclipso and Starman being alive, but I didn't actually like the finale all that much aside from Jake letting Grundy go. Felt like the ISA went down too easily. We went from them styling on the heroes - including original JSA! - to getting their asses kicked in a straight fight without a lot changing in the interim. Oh, and Pat looking younger than Starman does make me think there actually probably is something going on with his age. If they'd made up McHale to look younger I'd have bought that Pat is just well-preserved but the extent to which they didn't makes me think they're looking to do something there.

Current draft list after some suggestions:Current plan is max of 4 tags per thread, so they need to be broad or else they're useless, and we don't want the pool too huge or else people can't find the ones they want easily and just pick "close enough" options. Ideally, all of the single-topic tags (so franchises like Star Wars, for instance) will be limited to stuff that makes up a decent proportion of threads so people who just truly don't care can filter it out. So probably not any one specific game franchise, since that usually only happens around new launches. With that in mind, hit me with whatever you got. Edit - Currently suggested additions:

Alright, finally rolling this out. I've got a few thoughts of my own. Different colors made a lot of sense when they were prefixes, since it'd provide easy sorting into different groupings. Now that they're just tags, I think it makes more sense to have them all the same color. I like the purple, maybe we can just do something a little lighter. And a preliminary tag list I've been spitballing: Basically, two types of news to cover most of the bases, and then you get more specific with the single-topic tags. Threads would have 2-3 tags at most, ideally. (The reason US Politics is the only Politics tag on there is because it's the starting point, not because it's the only one. Figure we'd listen to the community and see what other variants you guys feel are most required there). Another idea we were kicking around that we're not 100% sold on is a [sensitive] tag that could serve as a guideline for discussion and potentially a content/trigger warning. The issue here is, on one hand we want to make sure people can filter out content that's bad for their mental health, but we don't want it to be an asset for the "No PoLiTiCs In My GaMeS" crowd.

Can talk to the tech team about if it's possible/feasible to implement that natively but it'd be a different system than the tag one. Could always do a Trump tag, but he comes up in a LOT of threads, even ones that aren't explicitly about him. And in the same way, other sensitive topics come up in threads that aren't strictly about them. I do like the idea, though. It'd be a good way to support members with traumas who want to take a really rigorous approach. I dunno how technically feasible it is, and I am still worried about misuse, though it might be worth it anyway.

Filtering by tags is 100% in the cards, yeah. You can do that now, actually, through your profile. Adding per-platform tags also looks doable. We don't want the pool to get too huge, since you start running into usability problems ("I can't find the tags I want so I'll just go for something close enough"), but an Xbox, PC, PS, Ninty set seems fine at a glance.

I really like Endeavor's arc, tbh. I grew up in a broken home with a pretty shitty dad, and like, the recognition that he and has no right to their forgiveness and they have no obligation to like him - even though some of them feel like they to? That reads... really real, to me. I don't think he can be redeemed, but I also don't think that's where the story is going, exactly. He's just complex. And tbh I would agree with the take that the adults are generally more interesting, and were more interesting right off the bat. It's not like we haven't gotten spotlight arcs for any of the kids, it's just that the adults are generally better constructed characters. Maybe after a timeskip the kids can catch up.I would hugely prefer that they remove Mineta, but he's supposed to be the butt of the joke. Which, granted, doesn't excuse the joke itself being creepy as hell, but like, he's not supposed to be a model for behavior, at least.

So, I read that article a while back, wrote some stuff up about it on Discord. It's true that the trans representation in the series is a very mixed bag. Idk how much better you can realistically expect out of Shonen Jump. I like that the effort was made, but it definitely could be better. Ditto LGBT representation generally. Magne isn't really presented as a joke, but like, she's also killed for the drama, which as representation goes... sucks. Tiger is presented a bit more jokingly and also is that kind of trans representation where it's like "they're totally trans you just have to read the data books" which, lets' be real, it's 2020. That doesn't count. I'd like to believe Hori would do more with less editorial control, but that's just me projecting, afaik. The politics of hero society I think are my one big disagreement with the thesis of the article. It's sort of been a recurring theme that while the villains might not be right about everything, they're not wrong that the system as it is is a little bit fucked. Like, they use, "Hero-Killer Stain" as a go-to example of how simple and wrong the villains are, but he's actually broadly popular in-universe precisely because people sort of resonated with his message that too many heroes are just for-profit enforcers of the status quo - and it's not something that the series tries to downplay, either. Gentle is presented as being failed society, that he's a good guy who just didn't manage to meet some unreasonable standards, and as such he's forced to act from the outside. Some of the LoV members get similar treatment, Toga and Spinner especially (Twice too, to an extent, but it's important remember he started as a fairly normal villain). And the cops... idk, there's this thing that I've been thinking is gonna be more relevant in the future, where the cops are fed up with the heroes but for the wrong reasons, wanting more latitude to use force, even while the government has their own killer hero on staff in Hawks. I don't think it's really as affirmative of the system as the article thinks it is.

Sasuke is, I think, much worse because of the way that the plot distorts around how he's a shitty person to accommodate for Naruto and Sakura's refusal to acknowledge that. Nobody really makes any bones about the fact that Bakugou's an abrasive ass, it's just that he's got the skills to mostly make up for it, and Deku doesn't take it personally. He's definitely got a reason to act the way he does, it's just not really used as an but rather, an explanation. Bakugou is every super talented kid who feels like they need to overcompensate for any perception of weakness. His relationship with Deku is shaped by that, and it's kind of exacerbated when he gets to UA and realized that he's not uniquely powerful/talented and might actually be outclassed in some respects. They really need to more directly address the outright bullying though, either by retconning it (just chalk it up to early installment weirdness) or putting him through an actual apology arc.

Thinking about endgame matchups... I think I'd agree that for the most part it won't be 1v1s. I'm feeling Gigantomachia vs. Kirishima/Mina/Others. This one's pretty well set up. Machia is a multi-hero threat, Mina and Kirishima have history with him. Then, Todoroki vs. Dabi/Geten to reverse the dynamic - he's gonna end up a major power in his own right, so you pair him with Dabi (for obvious reasons) and Geten (to complete the power symmetry). Unless Shiggy ends up giving Geten's power to Dabi at some point... could be cool. I see Uraraka vs. Toga, but I'd agree it's not a pairing as is. Needs more groundwork done first or else it'll just be a designated girl fight thing. Yeah, they both like the same guy, and Toga is also a little obsessed with Uraraka, but the first is thin and the second hasn't really been explored much. Shiggy vs. Deku is pretty obvious, might have Bakugou in there too, maybe. But I think that we'll start seeing the cast open up a bit after this arc, on the villain side especially. We got that setup with the PLF lieutenants that hasn't amounted to much yet, but I think we'll get more of them in the future. So all this could be pretty easily subject to change. There'll still be lighter moments/chapters/arcs, but the school trappings won't fit if things shake out the way they're looking to. Kids are gonna have to grow up. And... I think the series will be the better for it. Yeah, there's been some fun stuff, but by and large it's felt more like a restraint than an aid. Also, funny idea, what if they demonize Shiggy in public even while he's calling the shots in private? I think you do it without going all the way, I just don't think it'd be as good as if they did. I think there's a strong reluctance at this point across pretty much the whole shonen genre to move away from highschool, in terms of both character age and setting or premise, but I think that in a lot of cases it's to the series' detriments. Just as a recent example, the new oneshot that ran in SJ last week was made about a million times worse by the decision to stick it in a school than if you'd had a similar take but, you know, about adult characters and not a teacher. Just the latest example, but it's stuck in my head, and it's been a thing I've been noticing for a . And honestly, with how much cape comics are in MHA's DNA, and how little they've used the conventional school side of things... I think it's kinda primed to break with all that. Assuming the editors would allow such a thing, ofc. And assuming Horikoshi remotely sees it the same way I do, lol. (Oh, and a big component of the PLF getting heroes outlawed would be them getting the cops onto their team, which we know is at least possible because the police aren't happy with the heroes lately and want more power, which would just be such a cool piece of commentary too).

Sorta depends on how you handle the takeover. Let's say it's the political revolution thing. Shigaraki is in charge, not of the underworld but not in the open, either. They don't know exactly where he is, the police work for him. Heroes are rendered vigilantes by default. That's not a problem you can just punch away, necessarily. Or, I mean, sure, you could just Gordian Knot it, but I feel like that's not really an interesting way of handling. It should be presented as more of a long journey, drawing out and beating lieutenants so you can draw out and beat Shigaraki, while working on other stuff along the way to draw in allies and create power structures that can replace what the villains built while they ran the show. It won't be "and then everything went back to normal," I feel. Beyond anything else, it's been a pretty persistent part of the setting that the current status quo is pretty far from perfect. So they have to figure that out as they go, too. Done like that, sure, most of the cast would vanish for long stretches at a time, but that's something they do , too. Hell, we've had arcs where Deku barely showed up, and he's the main character. I could see the series leaning even harder into a rotating cast setup. Now, the one part of this that I just straight up don't have an answer for is the "would this actually fly with the editors" one. It'd unquestionably be a shift to just about every part of the structure, and like, it's not like they're not doing well right now! There'd be a lot of risk averse people to overcome to make these kinds of changes. But man, it'd work so well, and be so cool.

The social order would change, and some people - heroes, mostly - would know what's really up, but for most people life goes on. Sure, maybe there's a little more corruption and crime around the edges, but the politicians (I can't remember the name, but the PLF has a political arm in place, ready to take power already) assure them that things are much better, so maybe they are.Yes, exactly - though the analogy I'd go with here is the Thunderbolts, for obvious reasons.I don't think they'll completely win here, but I think we're one arc out from it. There'll be a prison break, which'll be reframed as a "liberation movement" a la storming the Bastille, probably focusing on Stain or, falling that, somebody more photogenic and sympathetic than AfO. Then you have your full blown revolution, complete with timeskip and/or fleeing the country.

Shiggy will be pulling the strings, but he'll be sitting in a mansion giving orders to the prime minister, that sorta shit. Some foreign heroes won't like it, but if the Japanese government is under his thumb, well... what're they going to do about it? Invade Japan, pick a fight with the "legitimate" government? Nah. So, what happens now? Maybe he wakes up, wipes out the heroes as expected. Maybe Gigantomachia smashes in and grabs him, they retreat to fight another day. Maybe some mix scenario, the heroes take huge casualties but not enough to take them off the board, Shigaraki gets away... I don't know how that one plays out. I think there's 4 basic scenarios, but I don't know which is the most likely (though I do have one pick for least): 1. Shigaraki wakes up, wipes out all the heroes around. Only the perimeter team and anybody evacuated due to injuries gets away. Shiggy is now in charge of Japan, more or less, with the help of the MLA. 2. Shiggy's resurrection is a failure, Gigantomachia grabs him and they run. Heroes go back to more or less status quo with the MLA rounded up and the LoV on the lam. I'd call this pretty unlikely. 3. Shiggy wakes up, heroes take grievous casualties, but a solid number of them escape and consolidate for round 2, which I'd be on being a prison defense. 4. Shiggy wakes up, the heroes take significant losses, but the regular cops come in with lethal force. MLA and LoV are on the run, but the hero society is shattered anyway by the new police state. I feel like 3 or 4 are the most likely, but I couldn't tell you which. There's got to be some payoff for that scene way back when the cops were talking about needing to make changes.

Mmm. That's the big thing, I think. If you've decided that they've already won, it's really easy to just... make that self-fulfilling. If they've won, why even try, right? But that's not what's happened. They're scrambling and pulling every lever because it's very possible that if they lose this one the way they're looking to, that that's it for the GOP as it currently exists. If we really get the trifecta this time, they might be forced into a position where, between voting reform, actual policy advancements, and cultural shift, their current platform becomes nonviable. Take heart from their panic, even though it means we're going to have to fight like hell.

"Trump allowed Putin to put bounties on US servicemembers" is godawful terrible, but it just doesn't feel like the disasters that've hurt his poll numbers in the past. In the abstract, I understand the reasoning on that Intercept article. If you're willing to work with people like the Lincoln Project on unseating Trump, or other mainstream Republicans on other bipartisan priorities, why not work with non-mainstream Republicans on progressive priorities? The difference is that while that all seems symmetrical on the surface, the simple fact of the matter is that the agreement you get on bipartisan initiatives generally is not really all that much like the agreement you get between the "populist right" and progressive priorities, because their support for those things is a fiction. They don't want it in any meaningful way, because their populism is a white, cis-male, straight, non-intersectional populism. It's about maintaining supremacy not class warfare. When they talk about "the elites" they mean intellectuals and Jews, not rich WASPs on Wall Street. Put another way, that Intercept piece is, speaking , somebody falling for the National Socialist label from the other direction.

More than anything else, my issue with the Biden statement is the stuff about many departments wanting to reform but needing money. A lot of stuff is policy changes, not something you need a ton of money to do. "Stop choking people" does not require a long and expensive training class. At the very least, he should have more in there about departments who will not change, like, for example, the ones publicly kicking the shit out of protesters asking them to be the bit accountable. It's not a great statement, and nobody has to act like it is. It won't sink the campaign to push him on this a bit.

Hm. The economic incentives around hiring trained - but black-marked - officers are interesting, but ultimately, I think not really all that relevant here, considering the behavior on display by the largest, best-funded police departments in the country. Why do we believe that Dolton PD would act differently if their budget was the size of the NYPD's? The rest... we've seen a lot of training programs that didn't really work precisely because of the institutional rot. Dealing with that has to be step 1, and that doesn't cost that much, in the grand scheme of thigns.

So, there is this whole policy dimension to this. Defund the police, in the sense that we should get rid of armed cops for like 95% of what they currently do and split their responsibility amongst more focused services, is a great policy for big municipalities with enough demand for those services that it makes sense to spilt them up like that. What do you do for the burbs and small towns? You need people located locally, because you need short response times, but you also can't possibly fund 'em at the levels you'd need to off the local tax base, and the demand isn't there to justify lots of different specialty services. There, I think you would see something shaped... a lot like the police. One central organization that handles everything. How do we fix of organization so that it doesn't have the same issues existing police forces do? FWIW, though it's not counted as such, public schools are the biggest share of the pie in most/all cities afaik - doesn't show up on the books like that because the districts are technically independent entities. But yeah, police departments are well funded enough that a reform approach doesn't really necessitate more funding.

See, here's the funny (well, "funny") bit. I think there's a strong argument to be made that the modern forms of racism are in fact arguably an invention of capitalism (or at least mercantilism), anti-black racism being so strongly rooted in the shitty-ass ethics people cooked up to justify the European slave trade. But at this point, I feel like it must be regarded as its own, separate thing, an ongoing injustice that propagates itself just fine. Like you said, they reinforce each other - how could they not? - but we absolutely still have to regard them as separate problems to be addressed. Sometimes you can look at fixes for one as fixes for the other, but right now, the specific issue being protested is police brutality - so it's best to look specifically to police brutality. Talking about the broader system of injustices is all well and good when you're talking theory, but people understandably aren't really looking for theory atm.

So, intersectionality is a thing. All these problems are, on some level, connected. But I can't help but regard the "racism is inexorably intertwined with capitalism" stuff with extreme suspicion. It reeks of this notion that if we can "solve" capitalism (by abolishing it and replacing it with another economic system) then we don't have to worry about racism afterwards. That just reads... so, comically, blatantly, obviously false to me. The specific forms of modern racism are of course a result of modern systems, but the xenophobia and tribalism at their roots predate all that by so, so much. "They're not like us" will probably always be with us, on some level. We will never stop having to deal with it. So I don't blame people getting pissed when they have a really specific complaint about racism and somebody goes "well, can I interest you in this discussion about CLASS." Related, sure, but it reads dismissively.

It's good, but not enough. As long as the explicitly racist cops are on the force they just undo all the progress that gets made in the training. You have to disband the departments and re-form them in a way that makes the civilian control much stronger and gives you the chance to create the right kind of institutional culture.

I think that it's a fine point of distinction, and I'm not sure how effective the actual wording changes are. If a police union reads "reform" as "disband," they can get people inclined to sympathize with them to react like you said "disband" anyway, and now you're left arguing that no, really, you don't mean what you actually do, which is never a great thing to be doing. The particulars of messaging are going to change from place to place and time to time. Right now, I think "disband" is stronger, but who knows.

Anybody actually saying "just vote!" is definitely missing the point (tho I haven't seen nearly as many posts saying that as posts complaining about it, fwiw). Like, even at a most basic, non-crisis level, it's not like you're supposed to elect the right people and then tune out forever. You always have to keep folks' feet to the fire. There'll always be something new they're not addressing, something old they're not addressing well enough. No elected official is perfect, and constant community engagement on some level is always necessary. What's going on now a crisis. It's actually no fewer than 4 at once, off the top of my head. So, yeah, people are pushing for change and they're right to. Not all change that needs to happen can happen in the short term, but it has to there. We can't wait until November for things to start getting better. By all means, everybody should vote, but that's not all that has to be done. For starters, we need to start putting enough pressure on local politicians that it outweighs the pressure they get from police unions. What's going on now (in the abstract) is a pretty great way to do that, tbh.

Other stuff that manages that... This is sort of the problem with establishment media - they're the only ones with the resources and editorial control to work as solid fact-based sources but so much of that editorial control is also bent towards really really bad ends.Sure. Maybe my own history is influencing my thinking here. My dad was a victim of abuse - parental, not sexual, as far as I know - and he grew up to transfer that behavior downstream. Someone being a victim of abuse does not mean they can't be a perpetrator of it later in life* and from what I'm reading, Shamima was. I have difficulty saying that it's unreasonable for people to react to that. Personally, I'm not in favor of retributive justice broadly, but I think that's a discussion you can have rather than something staff needs to make a hard, fast line on.There were... a fair few other words in that discussion, no?

Nobody's been banned for saying that she should have a trial, though. That perception is simply untrue. I mean, no. You're having discussion with . The discussion people had with Wind involved a lot more accusations of being effectively a Trump supporter (which is what I'm taking gammon to effectively be) and similar accusations and hostility. Thus the bans.

TBH that banner should probably have said "over multiple posts," thus the similarity in duration. Addressing this and 's points about public discussion of moderation here, history has sort of shown us that threads and topics dedicated to talking about moderation writ large tend to devolve quickly. A lot of people want to sincerely try to improve things. Others want to burn it down. And others still just want to relitigate old (well-deserved) bans. We can mostly screen out the last one, but the former two are harder. That's why we prefer formats like the upcoming AsianEra meeting, where the discussion can be public and we're sure it's focused on involved parties dealing with specific issues. Making moderation discussion public is definitely not viable. Respectfully, that's an enormous burden to put on people who are, at the end of the day, volunteers. What if somebody needs to share private information to give context to their thinking on a ban? Or what if they're worried about attracting offsite harassment for their opinions? I'd like to think we're not as bad as the actual cops. I dunno, maybe that's the perspective. Like it says in the staff post: this is a topic that it's possible to have multiple views on. Unlike police brutality, it's not as easy as saying that one side is totally wrong, excepting the people who say she should remain stateless, who were banned. No, it was not. As shown by reading the Guardian article at the top of the topic, this isn't as simple as clear-cut bigotry. Treating it like it is just shuts down discussion.

But it's not really about that. Journey, not destination, grasshopper. If you predicted it or not, it was still a ton of fun. Good example: the attempted murder at the very end. Me and like 4 other people all went "Prop knife" at the same time, but that wasn't the point. It's not a thriller. Thing is, the numbers are kind of hard to parse any other way than that there actually are a lot of Republican defections in the suburbs. High R turnout but huge swings. I linked a Vox article going over it, but it certainly looks more like that than a huge activation of previous nonvoters.

If they're numerous enough to form a marginal voting bloc - as in, the margin between winning and not - then, uh, they already have weight. Acknowledging that does not give them more. And I think that the case is pretty clear - I'm really not seeing the uncertainty you're putting into the article. If R, I, and D turnout are all up, but the actual D vote margine also goes up, there must be some unexpectedly large number of typically conservative registered R or I voters who changed teams. Otherwise, they'd follow the previously expected pattern. The decision to change the party platform to appeal to them is a separate call, which is going to weigh on a lot of factors. If we can get them on board without doing anything, as we seem to have done in 2018 and seem to be repeating in 2020, great. If that changes, I'd express a pretty strong preference towards not giving them a thing. The Republicans will be just as vile as ever. They can either vote for the only morally acceptable choice or expose themselves as everything they pretend they're not - because unlike others, they'd have no real excuse. This is, perhaps, not the world's most adroit political strategy, but I'm not a political strategist, just an observer. I would agree that activating already liberal/progressive nonvoters would certainly be preferable to making concessions to conservatives, if that's what you're looking for?

Oh, I think that there's been a miscommunication. I in no way shape or form think we should be working to appeal to never trump republicans on policywise, though I do think that they might've given us the suburbs in 2018. I just think they're numerous enough that the Lincoln project is probably targeting some of their ads at them. (Though now that I think about it simple bias would probably mean that TLP probably thinks that they'd be a group worth targeting regardless of how many of them there are).

There aren't really enough new voters to explain the change by anything other than some kind of realignment - and I don't think that these people have suddenly become good progressives or liberals. I think they're probably still conservative, but they're not voting R any more. And the thing about realignments is that they can be sticky. Though that's not really the question at hand - it's are there enough of them to be worth targeting. And considering the gains we saw in 2018 in districts like these, the answer looks like a yes.

Well, that's sort of the thing. They switched because Trump's politics weren't acceptable to them - but do we think the party writ large is actually going to be able to abandon Trumpian politics? Like, there's already buzz about Tucker fuckin' Carlson running in 2024. I don't think they're good people, really. I just don't know exactly how they're going to move after Trump. TBH this conversation just seems to keep going in circles because the arguments being made are not symmetrical. The Lincoln Project is full of awful people. They are, temporarily, working against other, even worse people. This has some value. But like, "they're terrible so stop signal boosting them" doesn't actually address that they are putting in some fairly valuable short-term work. I get why people are reluctant to shed allies right now, even if they do fucking suck. There's actually an interesting argument to be made that right now, we just don't them. I think that's a more compelling point, honestly. If this was a close election and it was all hands on deck, then sure, I can understand the short term alliance, but if the polling bears out, I don't know it's worth letting these guys build a platform they can use in the future. Buuuuuuuut of course, nobody who remembers 2016 is inclined to take that kind of thing on faith.Ehhhhhhhhh sorta. Some of it is. Some of it's targeting other Never-Trump conservatives, or people who could be. And some of it's targeting Trump, himself, specifically, to incite a reaction.

Not totally sure. One of the weirder phenomena of the past 4 years is the shift of previously Republican suburbs strongly towards Dems. In 2016, I'd have said that the never-Trump wing of the party was a joke. 2018 showed that enough people joined it over Trump's tenure that they might actually have some significant political sway. How they're going to shake out after he's gone is something everybody's sort of wondering about.

Thread Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Where is the outrage over anti-Semitism in Sports and Hollywood?
Great article. I hadn't known that about the Billie Holliday song. That... really speaks to me, for some reason. A lot of people don't give a fuck about antisemitism for a lot of reasons. Part of it's that it's viewed as an "old" problem, because it is, in the sense that it's as old as the hills. The holocaust helps and hurts that perception, since it gives a clear defining "and then it was over!" point, a little like the way the civil rights act does (or did) for white people. After we beat the nazis and discovered the horrors of the camps, everybody stopped being antisemitic, right? Well, no, of course not. Antisemitism is as old as the hills. It'll be here long after everybody posting in this thread is dead. It's also got a lot of really unfortunate intersectional fault points specific to it. Like, being woke means, to some extent, being anticapitalist, right? Even if you're not a full-bore socialist, nobody can deny the way the excesses of capitalism feed into other systems of prejudice. Buuuuut when you start chanting about the banks controlling everything you start picking up some pretty fucking unfortunate agreement. Because hey, you know who definitely agrees with that? Nazis, because they think the banks are all run by Jews. It's just that it's really, really easy to pick up on a thread of real oppression and get diverted into millennia-old conspiracy theories instead. The people with all the money have all the power, you say, and the guy next to you goes yes, they do, like those Rothschilds, and then you're off to the races. That's what people mean when they say that anti-semitism is bi-partisan. The left has antisemites and the right has antisemites and even though they might very well hate everything else about their opposite they will agree on that. That's not me drawing an equivalency, mind - the right's the one that built Auschwitz. But it gets tiring, hearing excuses from supposed allies. This is kinda all rooted in the the religious oppression, which is like, it's own kettle of fish. Antisemitism being both a racial and religious prejudice means it crops up across demographics that you wouldn't expect. And the way that Jews are variably white to most people (in NA, at least) and very much white to the white supremacists puts us on the outs with everybody, it sometimes feels. Anyway, KAJ with the great article. Recommend everybody read it.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Historically, the bossfights in Halo - that is, fights with singular powerful enemies - have been bad. Tartarus, bad. Guilty Spark, bad. Didact was more of a combat arena than a boss per se, but still, not great. And I think I speak for everybody when I say I don't want a repeat of the Warden Eternal. What's been good was stuff like the Scarab battles in 3. Large-scale encounters with dynamic enemies centered around some setpiece baddies. More of I'll take. Goblins would be great in that context. Maybe even have boss-esque figures stomping around that you need to avoid in those larger scale battles. But a singular boss-battle figure... no, thanks. I'm good.
