Thread Xbox Live Gold will no longer be obligatory for Free To Play titles, price hike cancelled
It is unlikely this was a deliberate decision and we certainly shouldn't just assume that it's some of sort of bait and switch conspiracy simply because there was a quick response.

Thread Dirt 5 player count peaked at 824 on Steam.
I'm not sure the marketing was right this time around. I know that's a pretty vague observation, but it basically drummed up zero hype with myself and friends, who all really enjoy racing games (including Dirt 3 and Dirt Rally). Not surely what the solution is. But ultimately if you can't even get the new game to excite fans of the franchise, there are issues. I don't think much, if any, of the gameplay looked particularly different or interesting. I also didn't see much in the way of multiplayer and career modes. Most of the footage I stumbled across just showed single player racing footage and no explanation about what was new or different in this entry. I may pick it up on sale, but I'm not excited to play it.

Frankly, we needed more of this pushback. Every time was talking shit, recordings, transcripts or interviews should have been released to demonstrate how the discussion actually went. I'm sure there were a ridiculous number of similar calls made over the past 4 years.

I hope we never find out. If only because it will paint a huge target on someone's back. You can imagine how the extreme right will be thinking about this sort of stuff, particularly if there is an upset in the GA senate race.

Thread WaPo - ‘I just want to find 11,780 votes’: In extraordinary hour-long call, Trump pressures Georgia SOS to recalculate the vote in his favor
The grift is a huge part of why this is still going and being supported by so many. That is, the likes of conservative media, high profile conservatives and various Church personalities. But underneath it all, there are definitely people who think Trump won the election, including Trump himself, Giuliani and probably various Qanon idiots. The grift is all of the people attaching themselves to the 'cause' and seeking fame, power and donations off the back of it.

Thread WaPo - ‘I just want to find 11,780 votes’: In extraordinary hour-long call, Trump pressures Georgia SOS to recalculate the vote in his favor
It sounded like the only action point from the meeting was the lawyers were meeting (tomorrow) to discuss some data that Trump's team is contesting. However, Georgia's team were clear that the claims were inaccurate and they would show them why. So it sounded like a formality at best, and seems unlikely to change anything at all.

I've listened to the entire call and it is insane. I have to say, Trump makes a lot of infuriating statements. But by far, the most annoying part of it, is the general way he carries a conversation and talks over people, repeats himself etc. An absolute moron.

Thread 'Destiny' Is ‘World Of Warcraft,’ And The Live Service Looter Race Is Ending
I agree with this. Destiny seems to be the only game AAA game that has benefited greatly from this model. There are other success stories of course, such as Warframe. But I'm not convinced people are especially interested in the model. At least not to the degree that developers should be investing heavily in the space.

Thread 'Destiny' Is ‘World Of Warcraft,’ And The Live Service Looter Race Is Ending
This is a big factor. I have a bunch of friends who don't care enough about games to describe exactly what does and does not work in their favourite shooters. But unanimously, it is "Destiny just feels great to shoot". Bungie have nailed it, and on that basis alone, the competition is fighting uphill.

Thread Did you realize how bad the sound quality in Assassins Creed Valhalla is?
I thought the combat sounds were the worst part. For example, the finisher where you kick the enemies groin and then stomp. It had no impact and was almost like sound effects were completely missing or not mixed properly. In general I would say the combat was where I noticed most of the unusually quiet effects next to super loud effects. It seemed to vary from battle to battle, whether I was using a home theater system, or headphones. The whole experience was bizarre from a sound perspective.

Thread Coming from all-AMD builds, is DLSS too important to be shopping Radeon this gen?
I definitely did my research and managed to order a 6800 XT for a fair bit less than a 3080 would cost me. I was aware of DLSS of course, but this thread is full of positive impressions that make me want AMD to release their version. No. My order is for a stock card at MSRP. No idea if the order will be fulfilled with all of the stock issues. But fingers crossed.

Thread Trump asks congress to increase covid relief bill with $2000 checks instead of $600 [Up: House GOP blocks it]
This will be the reason the bill gets sunk. Republicans will try to stuff this through the process and the Democrats will strike it down. Then we go back to Republicans blaming Democrats for obstructing the bill. It's very predictable and tiresome. It would be nice if they could just push out the COVID assistance separate to all of this other stuff.

Thread LTTP: Dragon Quest XI S is the finest JRPG I've played in 15 years, the absolute best "classic" fantasy adventure you can have in today's consoles IMO
I played this recently and thought it was quite good. A solid 7/10. I'll never forget the overworld exploration music. But I wish I could forget the battle music. Combat was only "okay". I had my fun with it, but it was also very repetitive and didn't really feel very good. Story is surprisingly good and the cast of characters are pretty good, with the exception of the MC. I'd put a whole bunch of RPGs above it, but it was nice to play a simple, straight forward JRPG.

Thread Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales |OT| INTO THE PS5DERVERSE
Finished this yesterday. Great game. I'm a little disappointed at how short it was, but at the same time, I'm glad that IG just built on the solid foundations of the original. The characters, including Miles, were fantastic. The story was very predictable, but executed well. I don't think there were enough 'big' set pieces, but the ones that are in there are very impressive. Combat was stellar. Easily the best execution of the Arkham style combat mechanics to date. Just quick, punchy, and with plenty of variety. The venom strikes were savage, so I never got sick of using the powers to shred groups of enemies. The general aesthetic and style of the game was impressive too. I was a huge fan of Into the Spider-verse, so I was rocking that suit for a while. But music, the animations during swinging etc. It just played differently enough to feel like a new game, despite 90% of the foundation remaining exactly the same. Well done IG. Looking forward to the next game.

Thread Bounty hunters in AC:Odyssey are single-handedly ruining the game for me (LTTP I guess?)
I hated the system in Odyssey. The first few fights were interesting, but I quickly got frustrated and didn't like having to use currency to keep them off my back. The fact that they spawned near you and were at just walking towards your general direction, was just icing on the cake. Valhalla has a much more reasonable system. There are a set number of Zealots (far less of them), and they do not hunt you unless you ignore one of the quest lines. Knowing there were less, I actually enjoyed fighting them and sought them out.

Thread Demon's Souls |OT| Umbasa
Hmm. Not sure about this. I see where you're coming from, but showcase to me just means visually stunning and ahead of the pack. It's definitely that game at the moment. It will be interesting to see how Ray tracing is implemented as the generation progresses. I'm not sure the best 'looking' games are going to implement it to great effect. But I don't know enough about the tech and cost of using it.

Thread The Ultimate Graphics Poll (End of 2020 Edition)
This is a tough one but I picked Last of Us 2. RDR2 and C2077 are also very realistic options. I think TLOU2 pulls it off because it's just such a consistent package across a ton of different environments. The animations are probably the best part though. It's ridiculously smooth and realistic, and the facial mapping/animations are leading the industry. I couldn't believe I was playing it on a PS4. In contrast, Demon Souls wow'd me. But the animations let it down. That's not a criticism of the game, which was brilliant. But as an overall visual package, I prefer stuff like TLOU2 and RDR2.

Thread Why did you like Ghost of Tsushima?
The combat and exploration carried it for me. I think the story was decent but not at all impressive. Jin was also a bit plain. Voice acting was on point, but as an actual character I didn't find him all that interesting. But I thought it was a great game overall.

Thread LTTP: Wonderful 101
Huge fan of Platinum Games but never got round to playing Wonderful 101 on the Wii U. However, I grabbed the PS4 remaster on sale and knocked it out in about a week. I'm unsure how I feel about the game. It simultaneously feels like a great game, but a weak Platinum game. What I mean by that: Overall I thought it was a very good game, but I was surprised that the biggest issue I had with a Platinum Games title was the combat of all things. There was also some really weird/creepy vibes coming from a few characters. Wonder-Pink and Wonder-Green were had me skipping cutscenes on a few occasions. Era, what did you think? Was I way off on the combat or was it a pretty consistent issue?

Thread LTTP: Wonderful 101
Hard to explain, but I remember a few areas where I was trying to draw the Hammer. But between the giant turtle enemy, and some other obstacles, my heroes were just hurt/stunned and I couldn't complete the move. I ran into the issue repeatedly, and the only solution I found was to run to the other side of the arena, draw the hammer there, and then sprint back to use the move. I ran into this issue a few times throughout the game and it always left me scratching my head. I think I would have preferred if the drawing mechanic was independent from the arena/enemies, so you could always draw what you intended and get straight into it.

Thread LTTP: Wonderful 101
The only Platinum game title that I thought was worse from a combat perspective, was the Transformers game. But yes, I agree that it's mostly uneven. I did have some great fun with the combat at times. The boss fights were awesome. But fighting 2 x Hoedowns while my team is stunned was one of the most frustrating experiences I've had in years. And I don't normally get annoyed by those sorts of things. I was also puzzled by the decision to include enemies that could only really be damaged using the time bomb. The really fast, teleporting enemies were just annoying, because you had to draw the bomb. Quickly change to a better weapon, hit them until they block before, repeat. I didn't find them fun or interesting to fight at all.

Thread LTTP: Wonderful 101
I was aware of the mechanic, but I didn't know how to get it to trigger consistently. I found the best way to stun was to parry and then use the team attack. I would then just follow up with a throw if possible. But I'm not sure I ever juggled an enemy to be honest. It's a shame the game isn't better at explaining those things. That said, I'm not sure it would have addressed the core issues I had with the combat and damage/punishment system.

Thread Wasteland 3 is one of this years most criminally overlooked games.
I definitely got 'unfinished' vibes from it with my short time with the PS4 version recently. I should note though, it seemed fun and it's the type of game I'd enjoy. I am going to revisit it on PC in January.

How does the console experience compare to PC? I grabbed this yesterday on PS5, and the visuals are subpar. Which is fine, it's not a AAA game, but I am just curious if I'll have a better experience on PC? The controls also feel weird when using the dualshock. Hard to explain, but it just feels clunky to move using the thumbstick. Weighing up whether to return the PS4 copy and grab it on PC Gamepass. Or just stick it out on console.

After Astrobot VR and now this! I am convinced that Asobo are at the top of the game for platformers. Both games are a little lacking in content, but they're incredible on creativity. I also think it's great that they've managed to create a strong combination of mascot character design, strong visuals, tight controls and catchy music. It reminds me a lot of my favorite Mario games, which is impressive.

Thread The Grand Tour is back with an all new special coming December 18th on Amazon Prime Video
Have been looking forward to this most of the year, but I found it a bit disappointing. It was super focused on their cars, and as a result, I didn't feel like they did much with Madagascar. They also didn't seem to interact as much, with less slow, natural moments. Still enjoyed it, but didn't quite live up to my unrealistic expectations.
