Thread Secret blacklist prevented people with Irish surnames from booking in resort
It seems weird then to target travelers by use of surname then and not specifically based on address, especially within a pandemic where you might be able to get away with a blanket ban under such pretenses. It's doubly-weird then because the ban list apparently includes really common Irish surnames in it, and not the specific surname within the article (which accounts for less then 0.1% of residents). I know bigotry is inherently irrational, but this one at face value is over my head.

Thread Vaccinated ERA: Pfizer or Moderna?
Because mine went away with the famotidine immediately, I assumed nothing of it and that's why I'm hesitant to contribute it directly to the shot. Nighttime heartburn also isn't a new thing for me. I think had the nausea been longer lasting, I would've suspected something was up. Update from yesterday: Two ibuprofen tempered the pains, but I spent the entire workday in a fog and feeling "off." Finally got home, complained to the CDC on the VSafe website, and slept for 11 hours straight. No symptoms today aside from fatigue and slight soreness in my arm.

Thread Vaccinated ERA: Pfizer or Moderna?
Moderna. First dose I felt nothing aside from a very painful arm. I did have slight nausea for about 10 minutes in the middle of the night, but I attribute that to nighttime heartburn and not the vaccine. Popped a famotidine and went back to sleep. Got the second dose yesterday at 8 PM. Arm hurts less because I exercised it by staying late. 7AM now and I'm in pain all over- noticeable headache, and my neck, shoulders, joints in my hands, even my fucking ribs hurt. And I have a 9 hour shift today. I'll power through it with Motrin and prayers.

There is nothing else I can add that is particularly insightful from my perspective as a black person, although I do want to reiterate deep's mention of the fact that I don't really have any meaningful relationship with "Asian people" as a community, both because we don't live together (In Georgia, there aren't a lot of mixed black and Asian communities), the invisibility aspect that Asian members have discussed, and my own lack of knowledge of all the various cultures that are widely grouped under the "Asian" label. I have met innumerable Asian individuals at my school and jobs (East Asian and Indian, primarily), and they have each run the gamut of political experiences and thus their empathy Black folks. Most I had no beef with, and even the ones who have slipped up by saying something prejudiced don't really muster up any hard feelings because that is ultimately a symptom of white supremacy, and not an indictment of the whole of the culture that any individual would belongs to. At the end of the day though, we congregated for work, and after punching out, I went to my neighborhood and they went to theirs. So, sadly, I have no meaningful relationship with the "Asian community," but ultimately this also means I'm not sure how to approach a topic that implies we have anything to hash out. Asian people aren't the problem in my life.

They could've made money just by having the entire thing as a standalone app you had to pay for (don't put me in charge; people not wanting up upgrade would've gotten less). Boycotts don't work in gaming and the majority of the Overwatch community would've bought this Day 1 regardless. If all the holdouts care for is the PvP, then they're not being neglected by not being given OW2 skins, no more then I was by not buying the Legendary edition of OW1. Again, this just seems like a very arbitrary line to draw.

I don't know the extent to which the OW base has shrunk, but I don't believe those who say it's dead. Even if I'm wrong in that assumption, if all of the content we've been privy to up to this point isn't enough to make a person want to purchase it, then they just don't want to buy it right now. That would remain true regardless of how the content was divvied up between those who upgraded and those who didn't. Like, either buy it or don't lol.

I'm not sure why when black people ask for black representation, other minorities feel like they...can't? If anyone wanted to claim Tetra as brown, they're free to do so and I would support that, nor would I characterize it as dismissive of black people. In general, I, nor this thread, nor other Black Era members who agree with this one author's premise are getting in the way of other groups asserting the kind of reclamation and representation they want to say. Hell, I would take a Zelda game that actually leans into an East Asian culture, because there's no reason why it has to remain rooted in the basic Medieval get-up. It's funny how in a thread about black people, you as a non-black person think you have any high ground to call agreement with the idea insane. And no, Fact of the matter is, Link and Zelda are usually reincarnations. They are designed differently most installments, and until recently you have been allowed to name Link whatever the fuck you want in the first place. Changing their skin color is not about to cause any issues with canon. Only thing it's going to do is upset diehards who think Link and Zelda being light-skinned is somehow integral to their personality without being able to explain why they think that is. And the thought that Nintendo can't create any original IPs alongside development of existing ones makes no sense either. Republicanism is really only about achieving a straight, white Christian ethnostate. All other so-called principles that they hold are only in service to this ideal. For example, these fuckers would actually be happy to pay higher taxes to better their community's infrastructure and amenities. The only reason they're about low taxes now is because the thought of a black person in a public pool they helped pay for is completely offensive and untenable. The real question is seeing how long they would last before they fucked around and found out regarding expansion, whether that expansion was through things like trade or for when they originally got restless in their own borders and felt the need to try and colonize some non-white folks (because racists can't just leave others alone). 50/50 they either get destroyed or perhaps get smart enough to hunker down into a NK-esque scenario and just stay in their misery for all eternity.

Thread What are your views on cultural or ethnic identity?
It's pretty much what you make of it, depending upon your individual experiences, and how those experiences compare with what a wider sociopolitical landscape at large communicates about any given identity ne? I'm just black American. I have no knowledge of any specific ancestry from whatever country my ancestors were kidnapped from, and at this point feel like, even if I did, I still wouldn't feel any real strong national identity anyway. So all I really have in that regard is "blackness." There is an element of sadness to this, but lately I've embraced both the process of uncovering black American culture and accomplishments, and finding relation and kinships with other black diasporas stranded by the slave trade. I've been able to talk to black folks from Europe and South America and we find commonality in our experiences within seconds. "Do people do x, y, and z to you?" "Sure do." There is an element of universality to blackness that makes it feel like, in a way, you have a big-ass extended family. There is also an element of rebelliousness in being openly proud and happy to being black in a world that is still thoroughly anti-black, so I also find fun and fulfillment in that aspect as well.

Yep. A lot of my Black History education in school was about a few key historical figures, and the general timeline of slavery --> Jim Crow --> civil rights. It's a depressing overview and gives the impression that development and contributions to the culture at large, and general opposition to white supremacy, weren't simultaneously happening, which in turn has the affect of making black folks feel passive or as if there is nothing exciting to learn about us. What's even sadder is that is all by design.

No one is doing that shit from their head. Now with rotoscoping, you don't actually want to draw over everything exactly anyway; there is still a level of artistic interpretation at play, because for some reason whenever you do copy it line for line, it legitimately looks like wobbly shit. While I'm medical and thus a phase 1 recipient anyway, I got my first dose only because someone at my pharmacy dropped out, and the pharmacist asked if I wanted it. I don't personally mind it, but it does suck that such doses aren't going to the high risk folks who need it before even I do. We've also had a couple of creepers stalking our vaccination site waiting for that coveted drop out. Like, dude. C'mon.

to help is another matter. Would you intervene? And to what extent? Because again, the predator to go off and kill else to eat. What about that prey animal it finds outside of your purview? Thread The “why didn’t you help X animal” comments annoy me to no end
If a person wants to interfere in a situation where a wild animal is trying to eat another wild animal, I mean, that's their choice, I guess. But it isn't an explicitly noble or moral act, because nature doesn't operate within the bounds of human thought and sentiment (which is also why I don't care when folks like Timothy Treadwell fuck around with predators and get eaten; we're animals too and still part of the food chain). Frankly it's hypocritical from the context of animal welfare- carnivores, especially obligate carnivores like sharks, have to eat, and eventually you're going to have to let it kill if you actually give a damn. Prioritizing certain specimens' safety over any others before or after such an intervention is ultimately just a waste of yours and the predator's energy, energy that predator needs to properly hunt to live. As a result, going a step beyond to others for deciding to interfere is legitimately juvenile, the peak of useless sentiment and fragility. Such people should save that trite concern for their fellow man- the poor, the sick, the destitute, and the oppressed who not only actually need your help and empathy, but can actually reciprocate it and perhaps turn around and help make the world just a little bit better for all, human and animal alike.

Thread The “why didn’t you help X animal” comments annoy me to no end
It's ultimately not about the one shark. It's about the fact that a lot of misguided human intervention in nature, bleeding hearts "just trying to help," can at best, lead to the death of animals that become too dependent upon human kindness (see the numerous bears needing to be put down because people couldn't heed the "Do not feed" signs), or result in an upset in populations because people like those in this thread think sharks are bastards who deserve whatever is coming to them. Tons of shark populations are vulnerable and endangered too, and no one is shedding tears for them simply because they're not cute enough. Wildlife advocates emphasize as little contact with wild animals as possible. Yes, that deserves shaming.

Yep. Pretty much all the dreads I come across daily are well kept and maintained. No smell, no signs of damage, no bugs (seriously, this is just straight apathy if it gets to that point). There are obviously methods and maintenance practices for keeping them in good condition, especially in work environments that allow them, which exacerbates just how charged the negative stereotypes are. Published

Thread Are dreads on white people okay?
Seems like a bit chicken and egg to me. There is a negative perception of dreadlocks that exist in white culture far more extensively than in black culture; whether that is due primarily to racism or primarily to the fact that the most common hair types that white people express don't take well to them (or both) does not mean that this sentiment doesn't also seep into the perception of dreadlocks on black people, and subsequently that it doesn't compound the issues we have in maintaining our hair in a society that is hostile to the very way it even grows out of our head. These things don't exist independently.

Thread Are dreads on white people okay?
Again, you can wear whatever you want. I ain't gon run up on you (just make fun of you in my head). But you don't really get the right to dictate how other people feel about you muscling in on something that is not only more common in their culture than yours, but is something that is inextricably tied to the social stigma those people continue to face on the daily for wearing the very thing you're playing around with. That's what Era collectively fails to understand every time black hair comes up. Racial dynamics exist. Racial hierarchies exist. We live in a world of racial disparity, where double standards already exist in favor of white people. Sorry that you get made fun of or ostracized for experimenting around with a hairstyle that people whose hair better trends towards get stigmatized for. If you want the pushback to stop, help black people out in destigmatizing black hair and its subsequent styles in education and the workplace. No one has really shown photos of white people who are rocking the look just as well as black people on average do. I mean, hell, you even have other white people saying white people on average look shit in them (which, again, is not to say there is or never has been a single individual who has been designated "white" who cannot look good in dreadlocks). But honestly, all this hemming and hawwing about Viking culture is just derailing away from the point that dreadlocks are an inextricable part of modern black culture, and as a result, white people are going to have to navigate racial politics when discussing it no matter who wore them centuries ago. Too bad, so sad. Should probably stop telling us to cut ours off if you don't want any uncomfortable pushback. That is legit dedication to the cause, although funnily enough I'm willing to bet those houses are sturdy as fuck. xD
Published

(54526702)

Thread Are dreads on white people okay?
You've got me all twisted now. That's the thing. Nobody denies that dreadlocks are a widespread hairstyle in terms of historical contexts. But when a person asks if it's okay to wear them if they're white, they're asking about modern social contexts. I would argue that, yes, dreadlocks are much more endemic to today's black culture than they are to today's white culture, and that the politics of black hair are thus relevant in this context, hence why you have a lot of black people that get fired up about it. At that point, it doesn't actually matter where dreadlocks originally came from (especially since no one can even pinpoint if "white cultures" even had them or not, which is its own rabbit hole), because again the question being asked is "is it offensive to black people?" (it is to many) or even "is it appropriating modern black culture" (yes, it is in many contexts). Saying "x culture wears/wore them" is basically a middle finger to black people within the scope of the discussion.

But okay, let's back up a little bit since people balked at the first post of my sentence. I'm not saying you can't do whatever the fuck you want with you hair, even if it looks silly. I'm not one for trying to physically police how people wanna express themselves. I'm not truly gatekeeping anything; if you wanna look like a fool and damage your baby fine-ass hair, go on ahead. But a lot of people up in here are acting like dreadlocks, in the year of our lord 2020, are not an extremely visible and somewhat intrinsic part of black (and I don't just mean black American) culture. People responded by saying "Bu-bu-bu My white metal friends wear them" and in general people are pointing to how the Vikings and other cultures wore them hundreds, sometimes thousands of years ago. Okay. So basically, unless you are part of a specific subculture like metal, or your are expressing a relatively niche historical culture, . Meanwhile, dreads are just a normal part of black people's hairtstyling repertoire. We wear them in blue collar settings, and in white collar settings. We wear them when we're young, and when we're old. We wear them using our own hair, or we style them using wigs. We wear them for secular reasons, and we wear them for religious reasons. They are part of our modern language, our art, our music, and our representation, (see my avatar). Black people wear dreads because it's now, today, a part of to wear them. If we're going to acknowledge that culture shifts with time, if we're going to acknowledge that things get appropriated all the time, if we're going to acknowledge that culture and identity is fluid and changes decade by decade, era by era, century by century, then you cannot balk at the argument that customs and practices that may have once been part of one culture, or may have just been culturally ambiguous because everyone was doing them, c You also cannot argue that customs can become sociopolitically charged depending upon how they are tied up in larger conversations regarding how certain peoples are treated, hence the issue with black hair politics- the stories you hear of our dreadlocks just getting cut the fuck off by some racist who thinks they know better- and why black people get pissed about this shit. So, when people- particularly white people- talk casually about dreadlocks , and they face grievances from black people who are living in modern times where dreadlocks have been far more of a custom for us than it is for them, despite the fact that wearing them comes with racial animus, saying "well, the Vikings wore them" and "But metalheads" or "It's just a hairstyle; who cares?" is fucking irrelevant, misses the point, and is dismissive. The way this situation is treated on the forum when black people get upset is appalling, which is partly hilarious because- again-

Thread Are dreads on white people okay?
White people living today don't wear dreads because of the fucking Vikings. They wear them because they see how good they look on black people, while simultaneously upholding a society that shames and harms black people for how our hair grows and what maintenance is required for our hair, including those same deadlocked styles that were stereotyped onto black people by ignorant whites in the first place. So yeah, there is cultural appropriation at play, there are double standards at play, and no I don't have much to say to white folks wearing dreads. They look shit on 99% of y'all anyway.

Thread Do you think there is a good argument to be made that Trump will be a long-term net positive for the country / world?
To be fair and amend my original post some, this forum is filled with minorities that have been hurt one way or another by Trump's actions. We're not really inseparable due to the presence of a keyboard, so in "anonymous" spaces like this, you actually can't assume you are having these kinds of discussions in places where LGBT people don't exist so you can run your hypotheticals about how Trump's actions- including the anti-LGBT ones- may have been great in the long run without the risk of hurting others. My ultimate sentiment, however is that this isn't really a discussion that begs for nuance, no more than "at least we got advancements in medical science and Fanta out of Nazi Germany, amirite?" It is plainly clear that whatever benefits have been had by a period of horrific governmental rule are not enough to really counter the lives lost and the damage wrought, and that ultimately the conversation serves to do little more than to give Trump credit he doesn't deserve and make small little in-roads for whatever alt-right trolls and undercover conservatives are browsing right now.

Thread Politico: Why Democrats Keep Losing Rural Counties Like Mine
Because Republicans at least provide a dopamine dose of bigotry on the side to make them feel better in the interim. It doesn't really matter though that the party is completely wrong and horrible and fascist. What matters is that when they get into power, they enact policies to fuck over minorities. Like, they actually DO something. Which I think the more salient point here: there is a running theme here regarding dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party. Whether you're a rural white farmer in Ohio or an urban black retail worker in Maryland, the theme is the same: "Democrats don't do enough/do anything to address my concerns." People don't want a neoliberal/centrist status quo. They want better. Dems need to heed these messages to make it harder for the GOP to make inroads. Even if we cannot physically bring back small town utopia, there's gotta be better solutions, different solutions, than letting these people rot.

That would be fine, but clearly they know what they're doing is contentious and can't take the criticism, hence why they put out this bullshit statement of trying to feed their families, which is even dumber in the philosophical confines of capitalism which- again- does not exist to make the world a better place. Just take your money and go home; don't try to guilt me into feeling sorry for you for being a good little capitalistic dog.Yawn. For one, I'm not outraged. I made a flippant comment about some assholes and apparently that was enough for you to get in your feelings. Not that it matters. Why in the world do you think the entire foundation of vaccine testing and production is not being rigorously used and considered in this instance like it is for every other vaccine that is developed, that we're starting from complete scratch in terms of knowledge, development, and ethics, and thus the covid vaccine will likely be harmful? Did you apply this level of skepticism to the new flu vaccine that hits every year (flu shots are not the same every year because the virus mutates), or the new shingles shot that came out only a few years ago that eligible persons are recommended to take even if they got the original shingles vaccine? Ultimately, why do you think it's naive to trust scientists than to not trust scientists? Because literally the only way a vaccine gets approved for public use is if the science says it's safe and relatively effective for the general population.

Thread Would you vaccinate today?
I am ignorant as hell when it comes to vaccine research and production. But I'm not dumb. The only way this shit even gets to market, where you- the average person- can walk into a CVS and get stabby-stabbed with a needle, as if the producers of the vaccine have gone through all of the testing required by all relevant oversight committees, and just general ethics codes and observational skills, to get it rubber stamped. The overwhelming majority of people are not going to die or even suffer serious side effects from this, because such side effects would've been hashed out during the testing phase before it is approved for mass consumption. Like, they would've seen test subjects dropping like flies, gone "Oh, that's ," and just fixed it, then tested it again, and they do this over and over until it just fucking works. Like, do you really think this thing is going to cause immediate spewing of blood from every oriface the moment it's injected, that the literal tens of thousands of people who they've already tested it on have had that symptom pop up, and you just happen to be the unlucky one who's a unique case study? The worst that probably happens to you is a mild immune response- fever, aches, chills etc., like with the flu shot (which just means the vaccine is actually doing its job and making sweet little antibodies)- or that it just doesn't do anything for you, since it's only 95% effective, and not 100% effective. This is like if Ford announced a bangin' new Focus for 2022, and people who are interested in the new Focus came along and asked "How do I REALLY know the Ford Focus 2022 is going to not have the engine fall out when I drive it off the lot? I don't wanna be the first sucker!" I mean, fuck me. I dunno how car production works. I just place faith in the systems that be that Ford has to abide by- as well as the belief that they don't want the PR nightmare of explaining such a dangerous bug- to do everything physically possible to prevent the engine from falling out. Does that mean it's 100% impossible for a car engine to not fall out from a new car? Of course not. But I have driven many a car in my lifetime, and have seen tens of thousands more cars, and I haven't seen an engine fall out yet. PRETTY SAFE TO ERR ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT YOUR NEW CAR ENGINE WON'T FALL OUT, AND YOU CAN BUY THAT NEW BANGIN' FORD FOCUS 2022.

I think there is lots of room in an ever-diversifying society to allow other music genres to score our media, for people to discover new sounds, instruments, and local folks songs to provide more unique and/or more accurate soundscapes for different works, without tying it back to a typical orchestra. The way the article framed the initial set up didn't sound like a spoiler, but more of a set-up or tagline. "A woman who kills her husband with a frozen leg of lamb" implies that this is not the entirety of the story or even the ending, but that it is set-up for the rest of the plot. Okay, she killed her husband with frozen meat. What then? Surely there must be more, and the more would be the spoiler in my view. But the later part of the article makes a point in that stories are enjoyed for a variety of reasons beyond the ending. Like, of course once you know the basic plot, you're free to rewatch to see the supporting structures or smaller details you missed, and that a spoiler theoretically shouldn't decrease the value of these other components of a narrative, which is true. My favorite films are my favorite films for reasons beyond any twists or endings. Thread Violent clashes spark mayhem in DC as protesters face violent far-right Trump supporters.
Agreed, but I think efforts need to be made on every front. We need to collectively ensure an environment where it is uncomfortable enough to not be worth the effort to be a Trump supporter. That means hard talks with one's social circle, it means deplatforming them from social media and larger networks, it means refusing business and employment to people who outwardly display their bigotry, it means fighting them in the street, it means greater funding for hate crime legislation and efforts, and on and on. No quarter should be given from any facet of society to anyone identifying as a Trump supporter. Subsequently, that means positive reinforcement needs to be made on the back end to reward people and efforts towards creating a more inclusive environment. We should be highlighting, promoting, and donating to minority individuals and causes. No one said anything about the ethics of every individual Insomniac employee, so don't move the goalposts. This is about JAT and his bigotry. It is okay for people to decline buying the game in protest of his continued status as Ratchet's actor. To imply otherwise suggests a responsibility for consumers, especially minority consumers, to prop up companies and products that they don't believe represent their interests. And that's not how this bitch works. I'll buy or not buy whatever I want for any reason. Trying to squeeze a redemption arc out of racist whites and their tap-dancing friends is more important than leaving them behind, because it staves off the uncomfortable reality that these people are consciously irredeemable, and otherwise empathetic white people who voted for Biden cannot handle the consequences of just how legitimately horrible their own family and acquaintances are. As a result, there is a legit emotional demand for these repetitive-ass stories, hence why news media keeps airing and publishing them. It's also why you will see similar op-eds regarding minorities and white liberals/leftists who voted for Biden. While there is a long-term need for a media landscape that reflects the reality that we are the majority, there isn't the same emotional crisis with us. There's no redemption arc to be had, no sliver of hope that we can be pulled from the edge of depravity, and thus no story. Thread The True Power VS Tournament by SilphSpectre; Pokemon Trainers Battle To the End!
So I happened across this video months ago in my recommendations: SilpheSpectre is a Pokemon channel with a bit of a twist; concerned about the lore of the trainers, the channel seeks to determine what each major character in the Pokemon franchise would have as their most powerful Pokemon roster. This is done by analyzing all of their canon, in-game appearances and putting together a workable team from there. I was enamored with the original concept and binged every single one; I think it does a great job in really communicating the idea that these gym leaders, even the low level ones, are rightfully deserving of the position, and even breathes new life into characters like Professor Oak and Agatha. But there's only so many trainers and whatnot to go through, right? So I had my fun once it looked like the idea had reached its limit and went off to do other Youtube'y things. Then he did the next best possible thing with the material he compiled: set up Wi-Fi battles using these teams, with anonymous players roleplaying as the trainers themselves, in a huge tournament complete with losers bracket. And now I'm back in: Even if you were to ignore the pure wish fulfillment of the concept of watching the Gym Trainers and Elite Four beat up on each other, the battles themselves are legitimately entertaining. Not only are these players pulling off some interesting strategies and predictions, probably necessary in a tournament style like this where there is no real tiering system, and not only are upsets pretty common, but SilphSpectre is surprisingly coming into his own as an esports announcer by doing this. He's already developed a catchphrase: "That Pokemon's been put on a timer!" It's also great that he doesn't reveal the winner in each subsequent video, so you'll actually have to watch through to see how this all plays out (or you could put two and two together using the thumbnails, but where's the fun in that?) The Kanto Region Champion has been decided, and now we're on to the Johto Tournament. Ultimately, I've been having a ball with it. Whenever a new one comes out, I slot it in on my work lunch breaks. Give it a watch and see what you think.

I've been saying for awhile now that part of America's insistence on not finally nailing racists to the wall and getting this stupid shit over with so we can attempt to have a civilized society is that we are asking them to take a stand against their friends and family. White people are ultimately unwilling to accept that we view their social circle with the same distance afforded to total strangers that they view non-white people, and subsequently that we have no motivation or inclination to care about racists beyond the actions they perform against us. All the calls for empathy and understanding and forgiveness towards Trump supporters? That shit is a call for mercy against their own blood because liberals- deep down far enough- know we are more than justified to feel some type of way about these people. But they're either too spineless to pull these folks to the side and check them when they're out in public, or these people are too far gone in the QAnon bullshit to pull them back, but they still love them. Ultimately the safety of the white racist in a society increasingly coming to terms with its continual horrors and approaching the bridge of what to do about it is still more important than anything else.

Not at all, but that wasn't the only thing that sunk Hillary. I also think pointing to Biden's victory is a bit misleading; centrists were holding a gun to progressives' heads to vote for Biden or else the entire season, and frankly it was more left-leaning minorities in key states who inched that shit over the line. So you're welcome.I think this is true to an extent. Different states have different needs. I'm not adversed to the 50 state coalition. But another thing I think is being left to the wayside is the Dems' inability to engage with people who don't vote for whatever reason. If the adage is true that increased turnout shifts in Dem's favor, it would probably be a healthier outlook for the party as a whole to go after the untapped half of the country that is disenfranchised, rather than trying to capitulate to white independents and conservatives all the time in the hopes that they'll be gracious enough this time to give them votes.

Thread Zachary Levi calls for understanding and sympathy for Trump Supporters
I want to preface my post with this: There's been plenty of times that I've done harm to others that was unwarranted. Perhaps I said something ignorant, or did or didn't do something that made them feel slighted or unwelcomed. In many of these cases, the people involved did nothing to deserve such action. When I've become aware of the harm, either through my own rationalization or someone telling me, I've apologized and vowed to do better. I cried in the shower today. What was supposed to be a quick affair turned into half an hour of me just trying to work out my feelings. I'm angry that I've been made to live in an administration that delights in the abject suffering of others, and that we barely defeated it. I'm sad for all the people who were sacrificed as victims to this ideology. I'm happy that, in the end, America said that the amount of misery is not okay, and now the world is celebrating and dancing in the streets. I feel beat up and emotionally whiplashed, like I legit have PTSD and I'm having flashbacks. And I can barely take time to leave this shit alone because not only do I have to moderate this place, but because I've got special elections to deal with in two months. All of this coming up- the fact that I haven't breathed in four years.... It's not the fault of BLM. It's not the fault of Antifa. It's not the fault of LGBTQA+ people. It's not the fault of Central and South American immigrants. It's not the fault of leftists. It's not the fault of the media. It's the fucking fault of the Trump administration and its supporters. It's the fault of Nazis. It's the fault of silent Republicans who saw what was happening and did nothing. To say we need to come together assumes that the people who aren't at fault- the victims of the last four years- are equally culpable as the people who were responsible for every. single. slight of this godforsaken administration. If you sincerely believe this, fuck off. You want healing? So do I. Trump supporters need to acknowledge what they did, what they supported, apologize, and vow to change- to NEVER vote for this fascist shit ever again. They need to be the fucking adults in the room. Only then can we move on.

Skyward Sword is my second favorite Zelda game, only surpassed by BotW for the latter just being that fucking good. SS was my first jumping point into Zelda, and I fell in love with it. I love the watercolor filter and the general light-hearted aesthetic, the characterization is absolutely charming, and once you fight Ghirahim and the story gets into full swing, it opened up into an adventure I just couldn't put down for the week I initially ran through it. And the music is to die for; I got the soundtrack CD and would listen to it in my old car during college. Without the experience and expectations of other Zelda games, none of the padding or handholding really bothered me. I just enjoyed the experience, so much so that when I went to play Twilight Princess, I was disappointed with almost everything on offer. "This isn't what I expected" was basically the gist of it (at which point I learned that every Zelda game is radically different from one another, for reasons). In general, Skyward Sword serves as a genuine moment of nostalgia for me, and honestly perhaps it's better that it hasn't been re-released. Without the game inevitably being tainted by its poor-ish reputation or just the change of game development standards, I can hold on to the memories I had with it at the time of playing forever.

Of course most are in favor of it. I maintain Innuendo Studios' conclusion that conservatives are drawn more to rigid hierarchies than equalitarian democracies just as a general philosophical preference, and thus don't really hold the same regard for democratic systems and the role of law that left-leaning folks do. Thus, conservatives will rationalize any hit to democracy to maintain power, because that's all they value, whether it's because they legitimately believe that non-conservatives are trying to destroy America and they want to do whatever it takes to stop us, or whether or not they desperately want to fulfill their race war LARPing and want to kill up a bunch of minorities because it gets them off or whatever. Whether or not they legitimately believe they are the last bastions of the American regime really doesn't matter. Ultimately, democracy is just a means to an end that can be happily discarded if it isn't working out for them.

Refusing to believe uncomfortable truths because they're uncomfortable is an easy way to roadblock solutions from being implemented. A fascist does not need conscious declaration to be a fascist or spout fascist ideals (a convenient cover for a group of people who thrive on coded language), and every fascist is someone's relative. Evil is not special; instead it is banal and considerably easy to perform. The American Republican Party at this moment in time is fascist, and anyone who wholeheartedly describes themselves as being aligned with them is at least subconsciously okay with fascism in the pursuit of their ends. Instead of hemming and hawwing atbthe characterization because fascism is obviously bad, or because a relative of ours is down the rabbit hole, we need to call Republicans for what they are.

We don't have the leeway to let white supremacy grind the gears to a crawl with climate change on the way. Like, covid has exposed that our inability to enact meaningful change in a reasonable amount of time while catering to white feelings to the detriment of even your own power is actively costs thousands of lives. Also, minorities being in seats of power is nonetheless dependent upon those minorities' viewpoints. Of the minority politicians that are Democrats, not all of them are on a similar philosophical plane as AOC. Like, you think progressive firebrands like me give the slightest fuck about Cory Booker? I've heard this before as well, that Democrats being in power allows progressives the leeway to make change. This doesn't normally bare out- turns out that when people gain power as a matter of a lack of meaningful choice, there's no incentive for them to actually do much in the way of compromising with progressives. And when those progressives want to leave the table, they're threatened by their so-called allies with four years of a Republican. Whole system is a fucking farce if you ask me. Now, I don't think things are inherently fucked. I'm just painfully aware that I will not get a civil America in my lifetime, and it's this truth that breeds apathy. Like, yeah, I voted for Biden. Thread Dear Era: Meet Huey, Dewey, and Louie
So, this little trio is quickly becoming a staple of my day. Background: My neighbor two houses down acquired farm fowl some months ago. They have at least one chicken, a rooster who, despite popular belief, crows whenever he goddamn well pleases, and what I thought were some geese just due to their size. Now, these "geese" were once penned outside and just living their so-called goosey life. Until one day a few weeks ago at night my dog started with what I call his "alarm bark-" the bark he makes when something is confirmed to be in the yard. I rush outside to see the fuss and notice the geese are just posted up at the edge of my yard and my immediate neighbor's, and they haul tail back to where they came. I congratulated my dog for posting up on geese- you know, the worst birds of all time- and I thought that was the last of them. Until yesterday morning I saw them rustling around in my backyard's bushes and, upon closer inspection, realized these fuckers were not geese, but ducks. Absolutely huge ducks. Once again, they saw me and hauled it back to their home. Last night they pushed it further; roosting, feeding, and doing whatever the fuck it is ducks do in the front yard. Now, I love me some animals, and I didn't want them to get hurt by running into the road or meeting with a cat or something, so began the near half-hour task of trying to get them to go around the back of the house. They were legit scared, huddling together and running between my neighbor's bushes and mine, instead of going backwards to the house. At one point I had to near dive in front of them to prevent them from running towards the street. Eventually, they got the hint and went home through the backyards. And yet, their horror film adventure where they're chased by a stranger at night hasn't deterred them at all. The pic is from this morning, and I presume at the time of writing that Huey, Dewey, and Louie are still foraging. Which is fine. They're just ducks, being all cute and quacky. They're free to stick around, I guess. xP

Thread Politico: Biden eyes GOP candidates for Cabinet slots
"Not the right term?" It's a completely ridiculous statement that enflames things and completely shits on leftists' right to civic discourse, which is the proper term for attacking a political candidate. If someone listens to an argument and decides that Biden is not worth voting for, oh fucking well. There's only 6% of undecideds a few weeks out at this point, which is not enough to swing an election with this big of a margins gap anyway. This shit is locked in. The outcome has already been decided. Regardless, no one's vote is being physically or legally suppressed by people criticizing Biden. To use that terminology is fear-mongering. This is the same shit that always happens in this godforsaken country. Leftists get told to be quiet until after the election because they're "ruining everything," after which when they ask for some sort of handout, they're told that the candidate has too much on their plate and can't possibly compromise. Ultimately we're not welcome in the party unless we acquiesce to the moderates. This shit is infuriating.

I'm interested in seeing racists punished, and for minorities to have actual legal recourse so we can stop with that dastardly cancel culture that ultimately does nothing. This doesn't mean we can't simultaneously improve society to actually reduce criminal behavior. I'm all for it that. Free healthcare, redistribute the wealth, and abolish the police and all that. Thread Bill Burr on white women (his SNL monologue)
I don't think he's saying that LGBT people don't need a whole month because the solution to the issue he saw wasn't to get rid of Pride, but to simply give black people the month after, and ultimately brought up the positive consequence of black LGBT people getting 61 days, which is a recognition of intersectionality. And while he approached a deconstruction of how whiteness and Pride intersect ("You guys weren't enslaved,") a guy like Burr was not about to A) Do it well, because he's probably not knowledgeable enough to do it, and B) Make that part of the bit when the entire set up to the Black History Month punchline was the deliberate offense caused by merely questioning the existence of Pride Month. To do that, I think, would've been way too much and would've been kicking LGBT people unnecessarily. It is just enough playing at the line to say "Why do you guys get a month (dramatic pause)......... in summer, while Black people who were enslaved get a shitty, short month? Give black people July." The entire first half is, ultimately, a deflection that relies in Pride's sacrosanctness to work, but it's use as a deflection to point out the dourness of Black History Month doesn't mean that Pride Month's existence is contentious here, because again he never concludes that Pride shouldn't exist as it does. As for the Karen jokes, they are easier to make because white women being racist assholes has finally got mainstream attention. For being the best part of the bit, it's honestly low-hanging fruit. Dunking on white women is easy af.

The joke about Pride Month was not that it shouldn't exist, but rather wondering why do LGBT people get a full 30 days during the summer full of parades and black people get February, which is the shortest month during a miserable time of year, and no parades. His solution wasn't to end Pride. It was to put Black History Month right after it, so that everyone gets an awesome summer month, and black LGBT people in particular get 61 days. He was literally being intersectional by first subverting the point through the questioning of Pride Month. Nothing he said about that was wrong either.

The beginning of the joke has him unknowingly in a Pride parade, which he characterizes as a sudden claustrophobic gathering. He asks someone to explain and they say "It's Pride Month." The stereotypical acts he named were acts that were going on during the Parade, to point out the obviousness of his previously ambiguous location and to shit on himself for being an out-of-touch old white man who couldn't tell he was indeed in a Pride Parade. He was not saying that's all Pride Month is, nor was he deriding LGBT people. To say "Two guys kissing" or "Rainbow flags" in the manner and context he did was not homophobic.

He punched towards white men, for one thing. Second, white women are the butt of the joke in service of non-whites with that specific part of the monologue, and by noting that white women will put themselves before other minorities and have also participated in colonialism and white supremacy, he is making a basic remark on- you guessed it- intersectionality, the idea that you can be privileged in some ways and oppressed in others. The joke itself is ultimately punching up. I can understand most well-meaning white dudes not having the daring-do to make that joke, but when it came down to it, he didn't miss.

White women who have faced discrimination will never have to deal with being non-white on top of it. Indeed, white women who have outright fought for feminism, suffrage, equal wages, the existence of rape culture and other fights in the front of misogyny have nonetheless engaged in and advocated for the very same fucking white supremacy that drives white men to put boots to necks. The part about "swinging their Gucci-booted feet over the fence of oppression and jumping " is also part of the point. Sure, Bill is being reductive with the mock whining and not every white woman is comfortably middle class, but the salient take-away- the part that everyone should actually remember and learn from- should be that white women have more leverage than non-whites do to advocate against their oppression, and they don't always repay the attention back in kind to other groups. On top of it, this hijacking behavior completely underscores white womens' hands in white supremacy, which is the fact that y'all stood by and watched black and brown folks suffer untold horrors, not because you were victims, but because you believed the same fucking things your husbands did. Another friend's sanity was way too low after several runs, so I was charged with going into the house to agitate the ghost for more proof. Got caught in the garage and once again emotionally shut down until it left. I came out of the garage in silence; my friends asked me to go into the bathroom to check for the proof. Got the fuck out and never went back in. Same for the second round- nope'd out at the first sign of trouble, which was a whisper in my ear. Not long after that, another friend got caught inside. He asked another player to leave with him- said player was already outside. Eventually the friend ended up crouched by the window screaming and crying for mercy. Oh trust me, the first time I sat down to watch First Stage, I cringed hard at the CGI. But I had to take into account it was made in 1998- that's only 3 years out from Toy Story. You can't expect anyone to make Forza looking scenes on a shoestring anime budget. xD (Now if you want some good television CGI from an anime, Zoids: New Century Zero. The fact that they're robots allows them to get away with limited animation, and the flat shading is genius. It's the kind of intelligent corner cutting that allowed animators the leeway to make the Zoids actually be expressive; like, Liger Zero has a personality and emotes during battles. I loved it so. <3) You're right about Second Stage; the entire digital look on it just turns me off, and I gotta admit though, I fell out of it when Takumi got on the brothers' team and never really went back to it. It got way too stagnant and slow, and I was waiting for him to, like, get on a fucking pro circuit team or something lol. But I do remember that even the character designs got stiffer and more limited with the turn to digital animation. Just...bleh. xP

Holy shit, I've found another person who loves the Xerox era too. When it comes to traditional drawing, I find that the more you clean up the art, the more you lose things like suggestion and weight that either are just gone forever or, instead, must be made up for in other (admittedly less appealing) stylistic ways. There's a tangibility and a grit to the Old Men's sketches that makes these drawings so damn solid, so damn perfect, and for someone to come in behind them and clean them up with ink and paint removes the weight and feel. And to think Walt was about to let his company go under until they figured Xerox out, and that he hated it until the literal end of his days (whereupon he finally realized he had the wrong opinion). Thank you 101 Dalmatians. Back more on the main topic though, it's ironic what I said above about, but I miss ink and paint as well. Sorry zoomers, but digital colors and physical colors do not look the same, nor do they act the same when either exposed to light or projected by light. That gives them a different look and feel. A bad drawing from an intern in Dragon Ball/Z will always look more pleasing and relaxing to the eye to me than the best drawing from a key animator you can pull from Super, simply because of the fact that the latter is made on the computer. And for some reason, no one has been able to, like, get a night scene to look good, with the way dark colors play off of each other. Think back to shit like old Initial D or Yu Yu Hakusho, and those rustic browns and blues. I can hear the jazz music playing in my head already.

Of course, I left a lot of things behind in Odyssey just gunning for the end with the minimal amount of Moons, but the fact that there wasn't a single point in Odyssey that necessitated me travelling to another land to finish a mandatory task in another land made the exploration more inviting and less like a chore. That's the real kicker. In the Asian Era Takeaway thread, I never once posted anything to hijack the issues at hand onto the issues of black members because I at least have the empathy to keep things grounded to the issues at hand, to understand when and where certain issues matter and that it's not always about me. You couldn't even be bothered enough to give black people the same respect and space. But you wanna imply I'm the one who's performative. Y'all have been arguing with black people rightfully upset that you all are wishing a white supremacist well, turning us into the enemy. You have defensively construed this justified upset and the mere apathy to Paul as wanting to wish Paul a painful death in a stunning display of a false binary and strawman arguments. Many assumed that people who didn't care about Paul didn't have a personal history with strokes, and that they were coming from a position of privilege. That's funny; black people are notorious for having cardiovascular issues, mainly because we're so stressed by living in a fucked-up world run by whites all the time. Throughout all of this, only one member has apologized. The rest either scurried off, or have tried to argue "bu-bu-bu no one meant any harm" as if black people are supposed to treat grown-ass whites like children every time they throw themselves on the sword of the status quo at the expense of the minorities they supposedly care about. And what pisses me off more is that y'all had the audacity to argue. It's clear the forum collectively know fuck all about Paul's white supremacy, and even less about black people, but you still got defensive, almost like you were offended that we came in and set the record straight. Imagine the gall, the arrogance, of being offended when people who know better than you correct you, instead of just shutting the fuck up to listen. That is a facet of white supremacy, by the way. Of looking at a bunch of black people collectively banding together for a cause and getting mad about it. This thread was an easy slam dunk for solidarity and maybe even a learning experience, and y'all failed to an extent that would make the Clippers balk. Correct? I posit then that rushing past minorities to wish their ailing oppressors well simply because the act of wishing someone- anyone- well, makes you feel fuzzy inside, and a fuzzy feeling MUST automatically mean you're a good person, is the left-leaning version of "thoughts and prayers." However, I especially do it when a bunch of minorities are saying a person who had a health episode is instrumental in furthering their oppression. Then I REALLY shut the fuck up. Frozen just feels fraught with development issues. The song padding in the beginning is atrocious, and the plotting and characterization is a bit tepid, like they didn't know a direction to go in regarding Elsa (boo on them for being cowards and not making her a villain). It is, ultimately, a serviceable film that is carried more by pop culture permeation than its own real merits.

If you have a problem with my being an admin, make an appeal to the staff and tell them why you think I deserve to be demoted for calling you obtuse. But yes, if you acknowledge that her platform was built by Harry Potter, it is self-evident that continuing to buy Harry Potter shit is the most direct way of sustaining her platform and ultimately her transphobic views. Because remember, Harry Potter is also a children's franchise; It's probably at hundreds of millions of not a billion or so readers at this point in its entire lifespan. That is a lot of people- particularly children- in the wheelhouse of a transphobe, who are more likely to be more sympathetic to her and less so to transpeople because they made a book series they really dig. Buying the game maintains her platform. If this bothers you, either don't buy the game or buy it used if you need to play a wizard roleplay video game THAT badly.

The devs aren't getting "punished" in this scenario though because- again- no one is obligated to buy a product for any reason, nor are people obligated to maintain support of a product. If someone wants to buy a product, but then changes their mind for any reason, whether it's ethical concerns, or they won't have the money, or a better product comes along, then oh well. The creators of that product are not being "punished." Lost sales are the reality of capitalism. Furthermore, you also cannot disentangle the devs from Rowling's pockets; "supporting them," aka, buying the game, is giving money to Rowling, meaning the end result of supporting the devs is giving money to a transphobe. You literally cannot buy a new copy of this game and give Rowling your money. This is why I say the intent doesn't really matter. Donating money to a transphobe because you want to support a company was contracted to produce a game based on that transphobe's IP has as donating that same amount of money to a transphobe because you don't care about the collateral damage of the game's success and just want to roleplay as a wizard: in the end, transpeople get hurt. And to me, that's why this is issue is actually simple as all hell. Either the devs come first, or transpeople do. It's one or the other. And gamers as a whole seem intent on proving that the devs matter more. Which I would respect more if they, like, just...admitted that they don't care and just want to play "the game of their childhoods" or whatever. Like, buy the game and play it if you want to. Just don't complain when people disagree with that decision onmoral grounds.

All I'm doing is dismissing the use of the term "punished" because I think it is needlessly sympathetic. 99.9% of working adults work for a company or in an industry that is problematic as a necessity of just surviving in the world of capitalism, which in turn is exploitative and immoral as hell, and thus boycotts happen all the time, whether they be individualistic or more widespread. If someone wanted to boycott my workplace because of some valid ethical concern, well, good on them! I hope the company changes. And I hope fans of the company don't run to my defense saying that I'm being "punished."

"Associating with a bad person" is a reductionist take on what is happening and what usually happens. Bad people do not exist in a vacuum nor do they impart upon the world actions which have no consequences. Bad people tend to, hence why they're bad people. In Rowling's case, she is using her influence to advocate for transphobic beliefs and organizations, influence that is significant enough that we've got people attempting suicide due to her participation in a transphobic environment. It is, at this point, pure stochastic terrorism. And people are balking at the implications of what supporting this game means on an ethical front simply because Rowling wrote the book series the game is based on, a book series that was dear to them in their childhoods. I mean, that's the reality of the situation. Our money, our actions, our support of individuals, however trite in their individualism, nonetheless have effects on the wider world at large. And people can either choose to either confront that by simply trying to take actions that reduce their impact without regard for the egoism of their intent, or they can continue with old habits in the pursuit of base consumerism and simply keep buying Harry Potter shit without regard for the fact that the money is going to someone who is, at the end of the day, hurting transpeople. Those are the choices people have, and you can't get mad when people judge you for making the choice that is measurably harmful to their existence. If you "don't agree with withholding intended support from this game," then fine. But you live with that choice.

I don't think everyone making the argument is doing so in bad faith. I think the argument itself, regardless of whether you're invoking it to be an asshole, or you're invoking it because you- for some reason- feel morally conflicted in this situation, ultimately hurts transpeople, and I personally care more about transpeople than I do video games or the Harry Potter franchise. To me, the priority is clear, so yes I view it in a pretty binary way. Sue me.

A developer making a game in a genre I don't like is not a "fault." Like, it's not a "failure" that developers make car simulators like Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport. It's a difference in interests. I am just a person who will never buy that kind of game because it's boring, even if I can recognize that within the confines of its design and intentions, that Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport are still good games. No one is telling me to buy it because I have to support the devs, that I have to think about their livelihood. That's the game of capitalism. Game developers aren't owed financial support from the audience. I don't have to buy anything I don't want to, for any reason, because the fact of the matter is if those reasons are ones concerning the ethics of the creators in question, it is still functionally no different from someone declining to buy the game for any other reason anyway. A lost sale is a lost sale; so why do people insist on badgering minorities into thinking about the poor artists and not the guy who hates microtransactions? Also, my post doesn't concern itself with intent because I think we should be concerned less with intent- with whether or not we are good or bad people- and whether or not the consequences of our actions result in positive or negative consequences for the downtrodden. If you're making arguments that, at the end of the day, put artists' livelihoods ahead of trans lives, I really don't care that you "didn't do it maliciously." Transpeople are still getting fucked over, and the focus on intent only serves to reroute energy from the real issue here, which is money going into the pockets of a TERF with massive amounts of social clout.

Thread A call to Era's developers and mods about the "think of the poor devs" argument.
If I decide not to buy a game because it looks boring, or it's not my cup of tea, or I rage against the sudden introduction of microtransactions, no one tells me to think of the devs. If I decide to not buy a game because the creators are mired in bigotry somehow, then magically I now have to think of the developers. It's obvious what is happening here rhetorically. When people en masse decide to boycott a game for ethical reasons, gamers who were excited for that game suddenly feel like baddies, and they recoil at the thought of being baddies. There is no worse thing on Earth than the sinking feeling of gamers confronting the possibility that they are not little angels. But more specifically gaming is a capitalist hellscape- the most meaningful way to interact with the medium is to buy shit. As a result, there's tension- it's either taking a stand for minorities and not buying a product, or not giving up on one's consumerist desire in a hobby fraught with rabid consumerism and thus going on ahead and buying it. So rationalization comes into play, and that rationalization has to- at the very least- come across as an ethical position versus a selfish or capitalist one, a morally noble reason to continue consuming even with minorities telling you why a specific product is harmful to their quality of life. Thus enter "think of the devs!" After all, you wouldn't want to harm poor artists would you? I mean, sure, artists aren't actually an oppressed minority, and the artists themselves habitually tell us they don't like being used as a shield, and yeah outside of this situation I am habitually silent and apathetic about their shitty working conditions anyway and thus really don't care about them.....but the artists matter too! Indeed, it's not too far removed from All Lives Matter rhetoric, where the point is to downplay a specific issue by disingenuous browbeating concerning some other superficially moral issue, usually an issue that is not as pressing as the one people are trying to refute. It is transparent as hell. So if you see it, report it.

I mean, to me it's not a nuanced question at all because I try to consistently prioritize minorities over my media consumption habits when I see situations like this. I really....REALLY.....don't give a fuck about video games, and of the few service ones that I do play, I would drop them in a heartbeat if it came out that the creators were bigots. There's too much content in the our globally-connected culture to be a slave to any of it. You don't owe anyone shit (which is why these "what about the devs?!" posts are disingenuous as fuck. No one guilt-trips anyone for not buying a game for any other reason, like disinterest. Game devs aren't entitled to your money). So to me, this situation is a no-brainer: If Rowling's bigotry is a deal-breaker, stop supporting the Harry Potter franchise. If her bigotry makes you uncomfortable but you still really, really want to get the game or whatever, buy it used. If you really just don't give a fuck about transpeople and have FOMO, admit that and buy it day one. Like, this isn't really all that hard. There's three simple choices here. But you can't be mad if anyone judges you for any of them when the cards have been laid bare.

This is reductive. JK Rowling directly profits from every piece of Harry Potter merchandise, including this game. Rowling is a TERF and advocates for anti-trans causes. Thus, buying this particular, individual video game ensures a bit of money will inevitably go to anti-trans causes. If that causes a moral quandary, good. That means you have empathy. But ultimately what you do with that information, and especially what you say to transpeople's faces about it, is still on you.

That would make sense; Brazil took in the most slaves. That was a (slightly) amusing part of the book I read; the amount of slaves in Brazil made slavery logistically untenable after awhile, even beyond the waning economical returns of the practice. It got to the point where in São Paulo, around 10,000 slaves just said "fuck it" and left in protest; the slavers asked Portugal for help and they were like "We literally can't do shit about this."

It's funny; in many ways I feel the opposite. I think the hands off approach to abolition and the insistence on not outright codifying segregation like in the US inevitably allowed Afro-Brazilian culture a permanent place in Brazilian society, even if this wasn't necessarily intended by good-hearted individuals, nor if this has resulted in a full on reckoning with Brazil's slavery past and the present ramifications. When I see Yoruba practices being done or capoeira being played in the street, I honestly get jealous. Black Americans have no real deep ties to their original African cultures, which is isolating and depressing. The nature of American slavery and the conscious attempts to assimilate and brutalize non whites have robbed us of everything from before the Transatlantic Slave Trade. And the fact that such obvious satire is being willfully misconstrued as a direct attack on 9/11 victims plays right into the conservative strategy of always hijacking the movement of anti-racism to undermine it, no different from when Kaepernick's protest was hijacked to be about veterans. Racism can't normally be proven 100%, and putting the burden impossibly high means you are not equipped to recognize it, much less fight it. Because there's always some other reason, some other extenuating circumstance, some other explanation, as to why the thing that black people are seeing and remarking upon collectively is- in fact- the thing, and that we're actually fucking crazy. "It was a mistake." "That's not what's in my heart." "I treat white people like that." "I was angry." "I was tired." "I didn't know." "It was the alcohol." "I don't have a racist bone in my body." I could keep going forever for all the excuses people have lined up for when they get caught in even the most middling of examples of mere bias. And that's the thing. No one was offended, at least as far as I can see. No one has been banned. I've grumbled about it offline, but at the end of the day it's not that serious. But even with that mild example of racial tension, y'all got fucking scared quick and began rushing to tell us why we're totally wrong. So whether or not you, specifically SJurgenson, were wrong for reasons outside of racial bias isn't actually the point of contention (because, again, I literally cannot prove what is in your heart, meaning it's a dumb-ass litmus test for anything). The point of contention is, that when you have a bunch of minorities going "Lol, that's kind of racist," trying to talk down to them and tell them why they're wrong is only reinforcing an environment where racism is allowed to pass. And I'm tired of racism being passable. You would've been better either apologizing or just not saying anything at all. Now here I am, once again explaining shit to a non-black person and being annoyed, when I could be doing literally anything else on my off day. It didn't need to get to this point. Yet here we are! "What are you saying; we all look alike?!" is not a cliche' borne from fucking nothing. Acting like there is racial bias going on with some of these responses- particularly those trying to explain it away (extra points for white examples)- is fucking wack. It's textbook fragility, basically everyone showing their ass because they got their hand caught in the cookie jar over something that is, at the end of the day, extremely trivial and even amusing.
