Thread LttP: Final Fantasy 7 Remake - This game is honestly pretty mediocre (please mark spoilers!)
Can y'all chill with the spoilers JFC Why am I reading comments about the final boss and shit? Come on people. He was the very definition of tryhard. "look at how zany and cool and funny we are lololol" - nah breh lol @ "don't like fun" YesHow does an unrelated scene invalidates my comment concerning the camera framing around Tifa? This is really not the gotcha you think it is. Stop being obtuse. The issue is that this is a sexist trope common in anime, not that it's something that just happens to be common in anime and that's why it's bad. The constant grunts etc. are also "anime" but are obviously not problematic the way the infantilization of women are.

Thread LttP: Final Fantasy 7 Remake - This game is honestly pretty mediocre (please mark spoilers!)
I was waiting for a PC port of FF7R so I could mod out all the things about it that would inevitably annoy me. But, well, it dropped on PS+ and you can't beat free, so here I am, finally playing this for real. I tried the demo when it came out and while the nostalgia factor was strong, I didn't like the gameplay much. This hasn't been improving with the full game, in fact, I think it's getting worse... Let's see. I am currently at the Wall Market (chapter 9 I think). Explored it a bit, but saved for the night before reaching Don Corneo's mansion. Full disclosure: I do not like Real-Time-with-Pause combat. Never have. So, I am obviously biased against the game here. But I suppose I can explain what I really dislike about it: it's essentially the worst of both worlds. It's mediocre action combat constantly interrupted by commands input which I find really tedious, with lots of chaotic elements going on that are beyond your control. And yes I'm playing it "right" and not button mashing. I'm using skills to stagger enemies and then spam my strongest damaging skills while they're down, I optimize my materia/weapon skills/etc. as best I can, I even peeked at this and I'm not seeing anything I'm doing that go against the general tips there. I am experienced with RPGs and I am not struggling with the combat. I just dislike it, the whole flow of it, it's tedious and annoying for the most part, and just not fun to play. I don't see this changing. Bring back full ATB or even pure turn-based, or go FULL action like Ys games do. Not this in-between shit. And worse, this is setting trends, as I'm hearing future Kiseki games may be inspired by this system, FML. Okay WTF. What is this 2008 quest design horseshit? Killing rats or drones in an area I've already explored? Then making me return there yet again for part 2 or 3 of the quest? Are you fucking kidding me? The game has done this repeatedly to me now. Absolute filler, bottom-tier side-quests that make the lamest Ubisoft sidequest seem downright clever in comparison. "Just skip them", you might say, but I always fear missing out on materia and such, and who knows if there is actually one side-quest out there that's worth doing and I miss it, I don't know in advance if it'll be a decent one or not and I do have a bit of a completist side sadly, so I do have to check them out. But optional is no defense for outright terrible content, anyway. (At least they do offer to teleport you back at the quest giver right after it completes, I'll give them that) This game is sometimes pure torture to play. Remember all the forced slow-walk sections we complain about in Naughty Dog games? It has so many of those it'd make ND blush. Hell sometimes you can't dash around for no apparent reason. There's no dialogue you have to hear or vistas you are forced to look at, but still, you are moving like a turtle in this section because... reasons. Oh and the game loves to wrestle control away from you to force you into these "cinematic" little segment like that because, of course. Oh remember those "can't go there, go back into the story/combat zone!" warnings from the PS360 days that annoyed us all? Boy does this game like to hold your hand that way too. Look, a dead end, except your character could totally climb over that minor obstacle or even squeezed through narrower passages before? No matter, do a detour where you operate a bunch of crane mini-games in an incredibly tedious manner, adding several minutes to what should have taken 5 seconds to traverse. People made fun of the ladder/raft sections in TLoU, but FF7R takes this nonsense to parody levels and somehow make them even more boring. There's no challenge there, no puzzle to figure out, no simple excuse for more additional combat encounters or whatnot... it's pure padding, a total slog. Oh boy. Aerith and Tifa are both terrible, honestly. My expectations were low, since, well, I'm familiar with JRPG tropes, but they ended up being worse than I expected. I'm not really gonna go into Tifa's design because that's a tired conversation (I will mention that the camera is verrrry male-gazey around her though), but I want to talk about their body language/animation and mannerisms. They do not behave like people; they are waifu/anime school-girl caricatures. You know what I mean, right? The constant leaning forward with arms behind the back (no one does that IRL, ever), the raising of both fists at shoulder level in cutesy excitement, and so on -- stuff that actual adult women never do; hell, even kids don't behave that way, not past the age of 10. They are infantilized, saccharine, insipid, cutesy waifu bait. It's even worse with the high fidelity graphics, honestly, because it gives a horrible uncanny valley to everything and makes it stand out even more. What irritated me the most is probably their running animation. It's parody level. They are not running or sprinting, they are , with their arms flailing about daintily in some complete caricature of what it would look like if you asked someone to . Like, was this mo-capped? If so, who directed the mocap actresses so I can wish for them to step on legos every day forevermore? Since we're on the women, I want to talk about Jessie a little bit. Jessie was not as bad as I feared, but was a bit of a missed opportunity. Her boob armour is obviously stupid and distracting, but whatever (yes I know it's the original design, it was bad then too), that's not what I want to talk about. Basically, she's turned into yet more waifu material for Cloud, and that's annoying. However, I will say that I actually find her far more likeable than Aerith and Tifa. She flirts aggressively, and is obviously horny for Cloud, but... the way she's written makes her at least more relatable/human than the other two, somehow? Like she behaves more or less the way I'd expect a normal, flirty woman to behave. The thirst gags ran for a bit too long, but it was at least kind of amusing, I guess. That said, they could have done a lot more with her character than reduce her to "bomb engineer who's thirsty for Cloud", and that kind of sucks. Basically, a lot of the characters in FF7R are flanderized version of their original selves, I could talk about how they've done Sephiroth dirty too, but the women fare worse here. Speaking of flanderization... yes the OG had some cartoonish, goofy stuff of course, but nothing as cringy as Roche the douche. Who added this and why? That shit isn't funny or cool or entertaining. It's just flat-out dumb, like what a boomer thinks the kids think is cool these days or something (inbefo someone says "but you're the boomer"/Principal Skinner meme.jpg). It wouldn't feel out of place in Trails of Cold Steel, and that's honestly not a compliment. Even McBurn isn't that cringy, and FFS, do you know how low of a bar that is? xD I continue to be baffled at the constant praise for the soundtrack. It was incredibly disappointing in the demo, but I was promised the full game would change my mind. It sure has shit hasn't, 9 chapters in. Not a single track in the remake so far has been an improvement over the OGs except maybe Underneath the Rotting Pizza which is about similar I guess. New tracks that I don't recognize don't impress me either. Often gone are the punchy synths, replaced with generic and overdone orchestrations. Even when the guitar version of Still More Fighting finally shows up (during the Airbuster boss fight), they still felt the need to throw in a bunch of random choirs in there, just to make everything more bombastic and overwrought, and it's silly and out of place. Even Aerith's theme is weaker. The original had an elegant simplicity to it that worked perfectly, the remake slows it down and makes it a more soaring/swelling orchestrated type and it's frankly boring. Fair question. I guess I don't have a whole lot to play at the moment, it's free, and, being real honest, the setting and the nostalgia is doing all of the heavy lifting here. I do enjoy some parts of the game. Cloud's characterization seems strong and accurate to the original and I enjoy his "whatever, asshole" attitude as much now as I did then. Barret is very cool too and massively improved over the original. Traversing through Midgar in a fully realized 3D world is pretty dope (when they actually let me explore). Having played the OG about 2 decades ago, I still remember the major plot points but not all of the finer details, and revisiting the story has been enough motivation to keep going... for now, at least. But this remains a pretty bad video game. Perhaps my opinion will change as I play more (doubt.jpg). I heard good things about this Wall Market section (though so far I don't see the fuss, it looks kinda cool I guess). Speaking of, I'm gonna hop on the TV and play that now. We'll see how well my opening post ages, I suppose. :D

Thread I hate grinding. Help me pick a JRPG
I honestly don't recall JRPGs being grindy since, like, the PS1 era at the latest? And even on PS1 the grindy JRPGs were like, niche ones and all, the mainstream ones weren't grindy at all. I don't get why this idea that JRPGs are grindy still persist decades after it's no longer the case. In any case, I would recommend Octopath Traveler, as this is the best modern JRPG I've played recently by far.

Thread Should I buy Assasin's Creed Valhalla
Haven't played it, but as someone who actually did like Origins and Odyssey overall (despite their bloat problems) I am still waiting for a better sale. I'm in no hurry to play these games. Hell I'm happy just replaying NG+ and onwards in Nioh 2 lol They were very pretty to look at, that's true, I remember being in awe. But overall I didn't like them much honestly and don't have fond memories of the content. I had a decent break between the main game and the DLCs, but I still burnt myself out and by the time I reached the 3rd world, I was sick and tired of it and had no motivation, had to force myself to finish it. The shitty side-quest involving Brasidas in the 2nd DLC also really soured me on the whole thing. I can tolerate forgettable or banal writing in quest design but this was some of the most insipid and offensively bad writing I had come across in the whole game, it actually pissed me off lol. Didn't help that the rest of the writing was pretty bad overall...

But this isn't true lol. It was definitely used in the Gutter, Black Gulch, and the Abyss covenant dungeons, it was also useful in Shrine of Amana. And it was expanded further in Scholar. I don't think this post is made in good faith. If you aren't a From fan, you'd still know the answer to this question. Six stellar, critically acclaimed games in 12 years is an track record, and a "magnum opus" project from such a developer, showing familiar tropes but also cool new things like horse riding, open fields, stealth, jumping etc. is guaranteed to be exciting.

I'll venture a guess and assume it'll be similar to Souls games, whereas you have some starting stats/loadouts but are free to customize your character how you want later. [Edit: confirmed by Omni a few posts above mine] The footage so far has shown us a typical "knight" stock character, a wanderer/sellsword type (curved sword + turban kind of headgear, similar to the sellsword class in DS3), and a magic user.

Thread Which Hyrule Warriors Game Was Better?
The original (Wii U one, haven't played DE) is better in every single way tbh. Better characters, better pacing, less bloat. The story was trash, but so's the story in AoC, and caring about a story in a musou is kind of lol The amount of filler side-quests in AoC is obscene and you have to sift through tons of them to unlock valuable stuff. So many of those are also just kind of "boss encounters" instead of proper musou and.... they suck especially in split screen. The game's combat mechanics are not remotely good enough to support so many missions or make them fun. And the divinity beast missions are a slog, too. Original HW is a proper musou game with mostly actual musou missions, it focused on being a musou, and was a much stronger game for it. Also, Impa was a million times better so OG HW wins by default. :P

Doing the Foundation DLC but the game annoyed me a lot tonight. Two quests glitched on me. The "swift platform" one had the literally disappear on me with a sliver of HP left (I stuck around for several minutes and nothing happened), forcing me to reload... then I died. Twice. This quest was charming at first with the synthwave pink neon thing but I quickly soured on it. Having what's basically is not good game design or fun at all. Then, later, the ID card quest glitched on me too. The objective won't update after picking up the last card and guides tell me I'm meant to insert them in terminals but I didn't have the prompts. I got fed up and quit the game, but googling, there might be a way to reset it somehow. I'll try that later, but that's very annoying, even if it's a side-quest. I liked the game but it's kiiinda overstaying its welcome I think. I'm ready to be done with it now...So that's why this game is so damn dark... >.>

But I wasn't expecting Dishonored to get mentioned in the action category haha. This makes the choice a lot tougher. In the end I very reluctantly voted for Billie Lurk in the poll but won't be mad at all if Cherry wins. I mained her in SoR4 and it was a no-brainer, she's just the coolest. Great write-up on Barret, too. I always liked his character a lot, even if the unfortunate Mr. T stereotyping is undeniable. Thread Triangle Strategy ("HD-2D" SRPG from the creators of Octopath Traveler) announced for Nintendo Switch in 2022, demo available NOW!
This is a good thing. Fuuuuuck permadeath. There's numerous ways to punish the player for losing units, perma death is the least fun one. Those battles are SUPER long too, imagine having to reset (which, let's be real, almost everyone does when losing a unit in games with permadeath) at the very end. Fuck that. If you lose a unit early on, you're already punished by them missing out on XP. But here's how other games did it that I think are OK: - Shining Force: paying a fee to "revive" or treat their wounds after the battle. Since Shining Force 2, you also have a death counter of shame lol, funnily enough it was a big incentive for me to try and keep everyone at 0 for as long as possible (I'd usually give up around the Geshp battle... xD) - Fallen units have 3 full turns before being lost forever (FFTactics). This gives you some time to revive them with an item or a spell. Not my favourite mechanic as there's still potential permadeath/incentive to reset, but it's better than a permanent loss because of an unlucky crit or whatnot. - "Injury" system (Fell Seal). Units that fall in battle are marked as Injured x1. You can still deploy them next battle but their max HP is lowered. If they fall again, they are Injured x2, losing even more max HP. Benching on one battle allows them to fully recover for the next battle (if they are injured x2 I believe they need to sit out on 2 battles and so on). I really liked this system but it admittedly works better in games with smaller parties where there's a regular rotation of members in and out. In some games it might just mean some characters who fall once, will fall massively behind in XP. But that's still better than permadeath. Shining Force is the most lenient in terms of punishability. The money loss was rarely an issue unless you lost many units and often. But frankly, it's fine. The loss of XP is enough to disincentivize losing units to begin with. Any other examples of different mechanics? I don't recall how Jeanne d'Arc or Vandal Hearts did it... maybe I should make a new thread about this Yeah you can. Did it all the time. Edit: oops, missed your follow-up post, ignore me!

Like others did, I reloaded my save and picked the other story option where . Really cool how it massively changes the story and even gameplay. The alternative battle you fight is completely different. Not only it's a different map and enemies, but uses entirely different terrain gimmicks to work with, too. Although I'll say that, unless there's additional context we don't have because it's not the full story, it really seems to be the worse choice in terms of story payoff. It's basically a huge self-own, lol. If I had some feedback to give to the devs, for now it would be this:

Thread After replaying all the Soulsborne games I realized that I absolutely loath Dark Souls 3
Spare me. I played the games in order of release. I played Demon's Souls in 2009, then I got every subsequent game at launch and have sunk hundreds of hours across all of them. I'm well aware of the Stormruler connection and all the other stuff, that's not the point. The point was that your post wasn't just an opinion on the game (which you're entitled to), you generalized and insulted its players (and even its creators, disregarding them as some "greedy committee"), too, in an incredibly condescending way. "People who liked Dark Souls 3 either haven't played the others or are too dumb to see it's a pale cash grab imitation" is pure toxicity. I've actually defended the fandom from unfair attacks and generalizations of us being all smug gatekeepers before, but you're really not helping to contribute to this image.

Gotcha. I did beat Mizutsune, but carted twice and had trouble avoiding a lot of its attacks, including the bubble spam, so I was actually low on potions when I finally did it. I used the the switch axe. I'm a decently experienced MH player too (played lots and lots of Tri and 3U, a fair bit of World (just not Iceobrne), and a fair bit of MH Generations U), I was never all that good at the game but I still managed to hold my own, so I was surprised at much how much trouble Mizu gave me. Still, I remember Mizu from Generations but I don't remember having that much trouble with it, but maybe I'm misremembering. Thread Which game(s) represent the gold standard for difficulty modes/challenge options? Which games missed the mark?
- The good: TLoU2. Hard mode is tough but fair, and if some specifics annoy you, you can customize it as you please. It's not every game that can be expected to have this level of micromanagement though. Horizon Zero Dawn seemed solid. Its hard mode provided a good challenge and sense of danger, and required you to really understand the combat mechanics, but if you don't care about that the easier modes could carry you. Ys games are typically fairly balanced too. You got the very easy modes, the more standard modes, hard modes for experienced players who aren't super-hardcore-youtubers, and then the inferno modes for, well, those super-hardcore-youtubers. - The "you tried, but kind of goofed here": God of War doesn't do it very well. Just makes enemies spongier and the game more tedious. Wolfenstein 2: TNC has like 7 modes, but doesn't really explain the differences between them all, and it's confusing to know which you should pick, so it's another example of poor balancing. I picked one of the middle ones IIRC and got my ass kicked pretty bad lol. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order's hardest mode is very hard, but its second hardest mode is pretty trivial, so it's another one that kind of messed up the balancing here. I regretted lowering it and switched back to Grandmaster even if the damage was a bit much at times.

Thread How to play Dark Souls w/o Shield?
I use a shield on almost every build. Yes, even on builds where I mainly dual wield or two-hand my main weapon. Because of two reasons: 1- it's always nice to have a tool for emergency blocking. Rolling isn't always practical. Like narrow ledges where a slightly off angle to your roll means sudden death, compared to how safe it is to hit L1 to block that projectile? Yeah. 2- it's always nice to have a tool for parrying. Parrying is a useful mechanic, and it's generally much easier and/or safer to do with a shield than, say, with your hand or an off-hand weapon. Not using shields at all is of course viable too. But there's this annoyingly persistent idea that "Souls games are better without shields" or whatever and it's just... always been nonsense. Bloodborne is obviously the exception because shields sucking in it was by design. But Souls games all have very good, useful shields, and no one should feel bad or embarrassed to use them.

Thread A scary alternate reality: Hillary wins in 2016, Trump wins in 2020. One of the reasons why? The COVID-19 Pandemic itself.
People suggesting there wouldn't be a pandemic at all if Hillary had won... come on, guys. Yes, the Trump administration fucked it up at catastrophic levels, but almost NO country escaped the pandemic (and those that did are pretty much all islands). There is zero way a large landlocked country with 300 million people escapes it. It's just that the death toll would be drastically lower. But remember, bitch eating crackers and all. Hillary had a lot of people who just outrighted hated her no matter what she did. Even if you had, say, 1/10th of the death toll, I do think Hillary would absolutely have been blamed for every single one no matter what efforts she would have taken to mitigate the disaster. The biggest flaw in the OP's premise is assuming Trump ran again in 2020 after losing 2016. I think that would be unlikely, frankly. Yes, the Trump cult started before he was elected, but it was definitely amplified by him actually winning. Nobody likes losers. Honestly these alternate timelines/what-ifs are so full of variables that it's impossible to predict what would happen, but I don't think the OP's version of events is a realistic scenario.

Thread Has there ever been an actual "<insert popular IP> killer"?
This was posted in PC-Era Discord just now: Laughs aside, it made me wonder... ever since I was a kid, I've heard of upcoming games that were purported, whether by publishers trying to hype their own product or by media being kind of clueless, to be the "X killer", where X is an established, successful franchise. For example, I remember some previews calling Syphon Filter the "Metal Gear Solid killer", and... well, no disrespect to Syphon Filter, but, that really didn't happen. And it got me to wonder -- has there been an actual "killer"? Something that was advertised in some way as blowing away the dominant, established IP and actually did so? I can't think of any example, but maybe I'm missing something obvious. Note: for an example to qualify, it should be explicitly advertised or predicted to have been the "franchise killer", not simply become popular and huge on their own. So, while you might think that Resident Evil blew away Alone in the Dark for example, unless people at the time anticipated that RE would be an "Alone in the Dark killer" or Capcom advertised it as such, it wouldn't count.

William is loosely based on , an English sailor who landed in Japan in 1600 and remained there and became samurai. He was made Irish for the game (presumably so the game could use Celtic lore for the guardian spirits stuff) and they invented some story about him pursuing his enemy (also verrry loosely based on Edward Kelley -- basically Edward Kelley turned into an anime villain lol) and seeking the power of magic yokai crystals etc. I love both games, but the story is frankly rubbish and William is a very dull and one-note protagonist, so yeah, you aren't missing out on any story or characterization by just starting with Nioh 2 haha. Switching to a character creator was the best decision they took for the sequel. The story will be confusing either way, but it's not intrusive and easily ignored.Wikipedia says:No source, but I do recall reading this on some article or interview at some point.

I don't think the historical accuracy was a factor. The main game features tons of women in various combat roles, including female samurai. And it's not a historically accurate game anyway because samurai didn't even exist during the Mongol invention, they came about centuries later. I'm assuming it's a technical limitation but they could have at least made it so that it's 2 men and 2 women. :\

ASoIaF never being finished will be one of life's tragedies. 3 excellent books between 1996 and 2000. Then 5 years until we got the underwhelming AFFC (still good, but noticeably weaker in comparison) and then 6 more years after that to get the also underwhelming ADWD. Then 10 years of except a TV show that fucked everything up and potentially spoiled major plot points. There's to be (at least... lmao) one more after that. Remember A Dream of Spring? I love this series so much, so it will always bum me out. I envy those who say "I don't care anymore" because still care. Ouch, I thought I had it rough as a "started in 2000" reader. Yes please. Thread Do you prefer it when WRPG's have morality systems
I like a system of choice and consequence, but morality systems often fall flat. Even in Fallout New Vegas, the karma system is... kind of useless? I can't recall it having much, if any, effect. What did work well was how the different NPCs or factions responded to your actions (depending on whether your actions benefited them or not). This makes a lot more sense and gives much stronger world-building. Greedfall actually followed this New Vegas "faction/NPC reaction" template too, rather than a binary moral system, and it was stronger for it. Not an RPG, but I actually liked Dishonored's chaos system. Wasn't a fan of how the first game did act a bit judgmental on high chaos at times (with high chaos resulting in Emily suddenly turning into Joffrey because she looked up to Corvo), but I appreciate that there were nasty consequences if you went on killing sprees and so on, and the endings weren't completely black and white, especially in 2. Hell, sometimes the low-chaos mission choices were bleaker/more depressing, lolThis is weird and feels like it's missing the point of the alignment system. Like, I'm no tabletop expert... but I thought the whole point of the alignment system was to describe a character's actions, not determine their actions. It's descriptive and evolves with time, it's not supposed to be deterministic. No?

And, seriously, mistakes happen and all but... wrap it up next time, for the love of Satan. xDOf course it's not "old". But fertility in women start to plummet drastically after the age of 35. This is fairly well known. It doesn't mean pregnancy is impossible, only that it's more difficult for women to conceive after that age. Some couples try for years without any luck.

Thread PC Gaming ERA | February 2021 - WE'RE THE PHANTOM THIEVES ON STEAM
It depends on how much Nioh you crave I guess? Like, Nioh 2 just kind of improves on every aspect, honestly. At the same time, it's often called Nioh 1.5 in that it's essentially the same overall game but with more levels, more enemies, more weapons, etc. but with a few new mechanics and various QoL improvements. If you were getting fatigued by 1, I would say just skip ahead and jump straight into 2. If you had a blast with 1, and do plan on playing 2 regardless, then just finish it normally.

Thread Game of the Year 2020 Voting Thread (Voting open from January 27 through March 1)
What more can I say beyond what I already wrote about Nioh 1 back in 2017, except that it improved on the game in just about every way? Sadly, the improvements aren't super major or drastic or anything, but the QoL improvements are still welcomed. And the character creator is one of the best I've ever seen so far. It's fucking Demon's Souls except prettier than ever before. Yeah, that alone makes it GOTY. Because . Blew me away completely. It obliterates the first one, which was already excellent. Abby is one of the boldest creative choice I've seen, and it just worked so well. That boss battle, jesus fucking christ. I didn't want to. I just didn't want to. You know the one. Well, the , honestly. Beautiful Metroidvania that borrows heavily from Hollow Knight but in a good way, and a stunning OST too. And, this game made me cry. Like straight-out bawling at times. People say TLoU2 is misery porn but it's actually fairly bittersweet in comparison to how depressing and cynical Ori 2 can get. After being lukewarm on the initial game and finding the sequel description to be dubious, I'm happy to eat crow, this game is amazing. This one surprised me, I had fairly moderate expectations. The game obviously looks stunning especially on PS5 on an OLED TV, but I was mostly very wary on the combat, but it's pretty dang fun especially on Hard mode. Parries are very satisfying, the stand-off mode is a lot of fun, the story is strong and individual character stories are also very solid. Although this game is very bleak, cruel, and depressing (another one that makes TLoU2 look optimistic), beyond the fact that You Can Pet the Fox; but hey, grimdark is my jam after all. Oh, and the free coop mode DLC is surprisingly addictive and a lot of fun. Very fun with friends, and faithful to the spirit of the original series. Plus Cherry is a really cool character and very fun to play as. Needs more of that synthwave music, the Das Mörtal track is baller. An HD remake of a Saturn classic? Yes please. Very short game but fun and pleasant and hit me right in the nostalgia gut. It's pretty and relaxing. Fun traversal and puzzles. The character looks super cool. I won't revisit it to clear all the towers or whatever, but I had a good time with it and I appreciate that it was made. Also: :3 A surprisingly decent action game. It has some glaring problems, I won't lie, but I had fun with it. I think the 6 or so Metacritic is fairly harsh, it's a decent 7-7.5 for me. I had some decent amount of fun playing this with my SO, but holy cow this game has issues. From the ridiculous performance, to the terrible character designs and sheer bloat and clutter, to the terrible ratio of fun vs annoying to play character roster... this isn't a very good game, all in all, and the Wii U original game was much better. But I'm a sucker for some couch coop... -_-

Thread Ys IX: Monstrum Nox | Review Thread
One of the earliest scenes in Ys 8 introduces a female character accidentally dropping her towel so Adol sees her naked and then she screams and stomps off and stays irrationally mad at him for a significant portion of the game. Every female character is also very questionably dressed (especially compared to the male ones). It's not the worst offender or anything, and it hasn't reached "dealbreaker" status for me yet (unlike Cold Steel where I'm fed up with the trashy sexist nonsense that keeps getting worse and worse with every game), but Ys games have become increasingly sketchier with times with the way women and girls are portrayed.

The original was cool. The new tracks are goddamn . I actually prefer the original OST here overall, but Saori's new songs are a great homage to the classics. I may dislike the game a lot but I can't deny the soundtrack is baller. Music that makes me cry, from a game that makes me cry. ;_; Lots of soaring, bombastic epics too. Some repeats from 1, but the lots of new great tracks too. Das Mörtal's track (Next of Kin Showdown) is the best by far though. Synthwave > dance or trance or whatever. Sorry, it's true. All new SoR games should have synthwave soundtracks.

You don't need previous seasons, each episode is self-contained. While Bannon is gross, there seems to be some decent pardons in there, assuming no outright lies in some of the descriptions. For example I'm seeing some people serving absurdly long, sometimes sentences for non-violent drug offenses, or twenty+ years for lying on a mortgage application, which is completely obscene, assuming that's the actual charge. Though I did note one guy was commuted from a life sentence but the crime was not described, which is suspicious. That said I wouldn't credit Trump with those. No doubt some attorneys pushed to include those so it could make Bannon an easier pill to swallow or something like that and he just went along with it. I am very certain he doesn't know any of those people at all nor does he care. and lol @ the Paul Erikson one. Fuck off. And yes, this presidential power needs to be abolished, FFS. Very interesting article and it has given me a lot to think about. But I have to agree that the claim that being a tenured professor isn't an elite position is some breath-takingly blind spot from this guy, heh. Also, the headline doesn't really match the article content a whole lot. Or rather it doesn't go into predictive details. What will make this coming decade "worse", and worse in what way? The article doesn't even mention climate change, which is odd.I interpreted the "align" part as the counter-elites exploiting the commoners for their (the counter-elites) own goals, rather than the counter-elites caring about their plight. An antiquated or medieval equivalent would be a group of nobles convincing commoners that the current rulers are corrupt and must be deposed for the common good, when in reality they just want to seize power for themselves and use the commoners to further their own goals.

I enjoyed it too. I'd give it a 7.5 or so, a 6 average is super harsh IMO. But I'm kinda glad it was a gift, I probably wouldn't have paid full price for this (wait for sales etc). But it does have undeniable problems. Featuring coop but no matchmaking is inexcusable. The game crashed constantly (PS5 version). The lock-on system is absurdly bad. The memory leaks or whatever is causing massive framerate drops (sometimes 1-sec freezes) that routinely pop after playing for an hour or so, forcing restarts, are just annoying. And of course, the game itself has no level design, no personality in terms of story, art direction or characterization. Which, well, it's fine, really. Diablo 3's story is trash despite them investing heavily in the VAs, fancy CG cut scenes, etc. and you really wonder why they bothered. But the combat and looting is pretty fun. It reminds me of God of War's combat at times. I kinda like the soul-shatter mechanic and the special attacks. I admit though, I didn't play much more of the post-game. I did about 3-4 "dream" thingies, but it got a bit tedious and repetitive without no new enemies. It's cool, though, I don't generally care for endless post-game grinds.

It's for the second trial that he's accused of murder. But like the article says it's... unclear who the "Tyrion" in this story is...Yes, they do. But it's literal combat in the story, not something metaphorical. And moreover dumbshit Trump fans can easily take it the wrong (or, in his case, likely intended) way as an incitation of violence. Thread Say what you want, but I prefer Sekiro over Souls games for having LESS OPTIONS - and therefore being more focused
They didn't "stuff Tenchu mechanics in the shell of a Souls game". That's a reductive and kinda shitty way to describe Sekiro. They made a ninja action/adventure game that re-used minor gameplay elements from Souls DNA such as the bonfire and Estus mechanics. Sure, comparisons are inevitable because of the shared DNA and the same dev, but it's still a very different game fundamentally, and the insistence on pitting both types of games against each honestly kind of annoy me. Sekiro's core combat is rhythm-based, Souls combat is methodical and stamina based. Sekiro has you traverse the world with high, insanely fast mobility and jumping/grappling everywhere (and also using this for combat encounters), Souls is about slowly inching forward and careful approaches. Sekiro has a more traditional form of storytelling, Souls is more minimalistic and lore-focused instead. Sekiro's character progression is linear and minimalist and the playstyle is tightly crafted and focused on being a gradually stronger shinobi, Souls is about developing your own character and playstyle to open up multiple approaches and playstyle to encounters. They are different of games altogether.

Seeing the red letters warning me of the invader made me go "oh shit oh shit oh fuck" and sent my heart racing. Then I saw them. "They have no shield, they must be crazy," I thought. But I was so terrible at the game that I still failed to kill them, but I gave them a good fight (they must have been as scrubby/noobish as I was). It was such an exciting moment, I started craving the presence of invaders later on, and eventually started invading myself too, starting a long-lasting PvP addiction. That's a good one. I remember this moment very clearly. I saw the "Shinobi Execution!" screen pop, and thought, "whew, I did it..... wait, why didn't an achievement pop like it did for previous bosses? Why am I not getting the Memory? Oh my god are you fucking kidding me Fro.... (the ape stirs) yeaaahhh of fucking course, you assholes!" HahahaHow about realizing that those its eyesYep, that's another great moment. After the suffocating swamp and the dreary catacombs, seeing this was absolutely phenomenal. I also loved the dawning realization that you were going towards Anor Londo after beating Pontiff: - First, the somewhat similar architecture, but you think, "oh, it's just typical Souls castles architecture" - Then, the black knight archers. Like fucking six of them. But you just think, "Haha you wankers, got like six of them now huh? Cool little throwback, good memories, good times". - Then you reach the circular room with the statue, and the illusory wall leading to Gwyndolin. "Waiiiiiit.... this isn't a throw back anymore..." - Then you reach the switch and the elevator and you go "oh my god it's not a throwback at all it's absolutely the Anor Londo elevator" all giddy like - And yet, even as you've known it's Anor Londo for a while, just seeing the words pop on screen with that chime sound effect, "Anor Londo", as you reach massive stairs... yeah, I got a chill, I won't lie. I love those games. :3

The first Ori isn't too bad but has some fairly difficult (and excessively frustrating) escape sequences. The sequel is better there, at least on Normal, you should be fine. Ori 2 obliterates everything about 1, I am happy to eat crow about this after being skeptical that the additions would improve it, but they totally do.

Thread What are your most memorable FromSoft "moments"?
Lecture Hall followed by Nightmare Frontier. Nightmare Frontier especially. I didn't even get to Rom before the cosmic horror hit me. I found the tonsil stone in Forbidden Woods, read the item description and headed to the place, which pulled me in the Lecture Hall. Before that, only the brainsucker enemy was a hint, and well, I just chalked it up to an enemy similar to the mindflayers in Demon's Souls, having tentacled mini-Cthulhus is fairly standard in fantasy settings so I didn't think anything of it. But there were a few things. Like the insight thing with Madman's Knowledge, which hinted at some thing deeper than gothic horror. And when I got to the Lecture Building, I thought "haha, am I in Miskatonic University now" kinda jokingly. And then I entered Nightmare Frontier.... and wow. The dream-world, feel of the place, like in those Dream Cycle stories. The "impossible geometry" of the place. The giant white apes. The white slimy shoggoth-looking creatures creeping about all over the place. It was like I had entered Unknown Kadath or something. And then, of course, Amygdala in all her glory and not just a spidery silhouette from a forgotten trailer. "I am in a Lovecraftian nightmare. Holy shit." I went in blind too, but now I had gained new insight and it blew my mind. After that, the little alien blob in the woods was simply the clincher. "Yep this is cosmic horror now." Byrgenwerth and Rom were almost no surprise. And when I found the Upper Cathedral Ward, and saw the Make Contact gesture, and the Celestial Emissary, and then Ebrietas, it was like "yep yep, of course, cosmic horror, I knew this". Haha.

I've been playing this lately. It's really good. Imagine something similar to classic Contra gameplay (though you do have a bit of HP instead of dying in 1 hit), with incredible pixel art, solid level design and enemy variety, cool bosses and guns, and a ripping metal soundtrack. I know Slain didn't have many fans, but this is improved upon it in every way. And it's really cheap right now!

I don't see sexualization here (mayyyybe if they had a Joel cosplay that was fully clothed right next to her, then it'd be kinda suspicious :P). There's nothing actually about the pose or presentation or outfit, the clothes make sense (no metal bikini nonsense). Showing some skin doesn't mean sexualization. She looks like a pure badass IMO. It's actually the kind of "scantily clad female barbarian" done right. Like the image on the right, compared to the left: edit: if anything, this is a perfect example of why Kratos sexualized.

I mostly like her. Yeah the cleavage and hells aren't great, but they're also fairly tame (by fighting game standards at least), and she looks otherwise pretty cool. I don't feel like she's being objectified at all. Plus, she wear pants. Actual pants. Triple bonus points for that! lol. But yeah, it feels like a decent example of a woman who, while still sexy, is not actually objectified. Honestly I dislike the music in the trailer far more than the design. I used to love Guilty Gear music (GGXX on PS2 is still my favourite OST of the franchise), those modern tracks with the crappy vocals are a bummer.

Thread What games or sections in games fit the "nobody asked for this"?
LoS2 is an amazing game in many ways , but fails at execution at so many aspects that it's one of the most frustrating games I've ever played. I really wanted to like it, as it improves on LoS1 on a number of things, but goes backwards in so many ways... and yeah the forced stealth sections are mega-annoying.More or less. At the start of the game I could kiiinda understand since Dracula just woke up from a long slumber and is weak/doesn't have his full powers yet blah blah... okay, sure. And honestly the rat transformation is not a bad mechanic. There's some decent puzzles/exploration section that involve the rat transformation mechanic, not just stealth sections, and they're not all bad, quite the contrary. I kinda enjoyed them, even. But there are indeed invincible enemies, big guys in modern hi-tech armour that apparently are invulnerable to all your weapons/abilities including all your late-game powers, and their canons basically OHKO you, so each encounter with them is some sort of stealth puzzle mini-section, and while most are easy enough, some of them are rather annoying and not a single one of those encounters is remotely fun at all. It's pretty bullshit too especially since they remain invincible even after you regain all your powers. It'd have been at least satisfying to slaughter them a bit later on, but for some reason that never actually happens. It's just a big fat "why? who thought this was a good idea??". The worst part is that this isn't even the most annoying aspect of that game. I could forgive this poor design choice if everything else was on point. But there's just so many little things about this game that are just this , as if the game really didn't want you to enjoy yourself. Like how there's a rather big Metroidvania-style gated world with power-ups scattered all around and you can come back later when you get the traversal abilities to reach them, but... there's very little in terms of map to orient yourself, or shortcuts to unlock, or fast travel, meaning it's an outright to get back to wherever. Or how there's a room with various combat challenges, but you have to deal with an incessantly shrill voice talking to you constantly as you do it, because reasons. Or how that character with the annoying voice (the "Chupacabra") is a fairly useful vendor but really inconveniently placed, making visits to him excessively tedious. Or enemies respawn constantly and harass you as you try to get from point A to point B (like, for instance, going back to collect some power-ups...) and throw unavoidable projectiles at you as you try to climb away, knocking you down and interrupting you, forcing you into yet more repetitive combat encounters before pressing on. I just found myself constantly swearing at the game and it wasn't because it was too hard or anything. It's so, so . The combat is decent, the old castle looks stunning as always, the vampiric powers are neat and clever and remind me of Legacy of Kain which I adore, there's a decent atmosphere going on. But the execution is overall a shoddy mess, resulting in a frustrating game that falls very short of its potential. Oh and the final boss is super lame, too. It's a bummer, really. That said, forced stealth is even more annoying in Gravity Rush 2 than in LoS2. The game is overall a better game, but holy fuck did those sections suuuuuuuck in GR2.

Thread Top Ten Sh*ttiest Games Of 2020 (The Jimquisition)
1) The main point is that a 6/10 game probably does not belong on a " of 2020" list. Especially if there wasn't any hype behind it that may have lead to some massive disappointment or whatever, it feels cruel to add a possibly underwhelming, but otherwise decent indie to a "worst of" list. 2) As for why people play "6/10" games, well... perhaps it's not a 6 to others? If it's in a genre or style that someone really enjoys, or if there's a uniquely appealing aspect to the game amidst its flaws, what's an unremarkable game to some might be more enjoyable than a popular "9/10" game because of the niche appeal. I'd rather play a 6/10 Souls-like myself than the newest Mario game, simply because I enjoy those types of games more. My time is enjoyed more when spent on that then on a so-called 9/10 game in a style I don't care for. Frankly, your comment about "selling themselves short" feels kind of condescending. I know what my time is best spent on, thanks. That said I only played the Hellpoint standalone demo and not the full game, but if it's representative of the final game, I would agree with the consensus in this thread that this game doesn't belong on any kind of "worst" list. It's a competent sci-fi Souls-like, at the very least.

Thread I am still upset I missed the Dark Souls 1 DLC (why did From design it like that?)
It's a pretty big fucking flaw, lol. But that means nothing for first-time DLC buyers because they don't have the pendant to start with. When you buy the DLC you don't know it's set in Oolacile or anything like that. It's just called "Artorias of the Abyss". Why would you know to explore the Darkroot Basin, or the Duke's Archives, to get started? This is why I'm saying this DLC access was badly designed. It forces the player to re-explore every single inch of the game map to "spot the difference". This isn't a cool puzzle, it's just pure tedium and it's indefensible. The mental gymnastics in this thread are strong indeed.

Wat. You say I'm not arguing in good faith when I'm literally the type of player I'm describing, when my main argument wasn't even the Oolacile connection anyway (but the pendant being dropped by that golem in Duke's Archives), and then you... flippantly disregard all the original Dark Souls players who bought the DLC? Those "plenty of ways of knowing" were basically just a google search lol... not in-game hints. The real solution would have been to either give a clue to go to Duke's Archives in Firelink and get the chain started, or better yet, just pop the broken pendant in your inventory when you buy the DLC. Which is what Dark Souls 2 did, and it worked great.

Nah, you don't need a guide normally. The only times you need a guide is to do all the secret optional stuff. And even From and/or Miyazaki agree since outside of this DLC nonsense, which is actually an anomaly, the games and their respective expansions are still all fully playable from start to finish without guides. The whole "this was by design" defense does not hold up to scrutiny.A hidden Easter egg != DLC content you pay for Seriously, what are these takes?Nah. lmao, ok, not taking your bait anymore. This is incorrect. In the original DS2, the keys were automatically added in your inventory when you bought the DLCs. The riddle in Bloodborne is not even really a riddle, the item appears in the Hunter's dream, where you can't miss it.

Thread I am still upset I missed the Dark Souls 1 DLC (why did From design it like that?)
This is missing the point, though. Yes, the games are known for being obtuse and esoteric. It doesn't mean that when you pay $15 for DLC, you should be required to just so you can find where to even begin to access what you just bought. When you buy the new game, you start the game right away. You don't need to solve a puzzle or use Google to even . A DLC expansion is much the same. The DLC itself can have obtuse secrets within its content and whatnot, and hell, you can even maybe throw a puzzle in there to get it started, but at least give us to start with. An item description, a hint, anything. Artorias of the Abyss had literally nothing to give the player, so new DLC buyers had to either use Google, or play through literally every inch of the game world all over again... it's dumb and indefensible. And even From knows it.That too, though to nitpick, you mean "before Dark Souls 2", because that one was fine too. Bloodborne regressed on that, weirdly.

Thread Are many bosses in Demon's Souls kind of bad?
For the game that started it all, I think they hold up okay. You can see how Penetrator and the False King were the prototype of the "magic knight" type of humanoid boss that became more refined with Artorias, Sir Alonne, Lady Maria, etc., and how Flamelurker and Maneaters were the prototypes for the "giant prowling beast/monster" type of boss later refined with the Gargoyles, Manus, Aava, Cleric Beast, and so on. The Demon's Souls versions have far more limited movesets and fewer distinctive qualities compared to later iterations, but still have the same building blocks in terms of playstyle and are those who are still fun to fight again even on replays. Whereas the "gimmick bosses" can be sometimes a bit tedious on replays, but are, at least, memorable. I agree that it was nice to see the variety of environments and I do wish we'd see more of that again instead of the generic "boss arena" (or at least better ones than Micolash's nightmare, lol... hate that thing, very tedious). Not that there's anything wrong with those, since, after all, the best bosses are in such rooms, but some variety is nice too. Also the Old Monk is a great boss, fuck the haters. :D The only bosses I'd really call bad/mediocre are Dragon God, Leechmonger (there's potential, the visual design is cool as is the idea of its regeneration, but it's just too primitive in its moveset, and the boss itself is way, way too easy), and Dirty Colossus (really forgettable and too similar to Leechmonger gameplay wise). Hell I even used to dislike the Storm King, but in the remake, I've enjoyed it a lot. The atmosphere and music is just insanely epic. Bluepoint really nailed that set piece.

Thread I am still upset I missed the Dark Souls 1 DLC (why did From design it like that?)
The sequels fixed this, but yes, it's indefensible. Especially when the DLC was first released. You have nothing popping in your inventory or anything indicating you where to go. So yo could have a saved file at any place in the game, so without a guide, you'd have to scour through in order to spot something different and see if it might be DLC-related. It's completely ridiculous for content you just paid for. I looked it up at the time, and have 0 regrets. For people who bought the game with DLC included it's not as bad, it's possible to find it on your own, but it's still really obtuse and ridiculous. The golden golem doesn't immediately spawn after you beat the Hydra, remember. So you can kill the Hydra, and then... there's nothing in that lake. Nothing at all. So why would you go back there? People defending this are cringy, to be honest. Every follow-up From Software game made its DLC far more accessible. This was a fuck-up, not intentionally clever design.Oh my god, stopEvery single follow-up game had the DLC more accessible than this.Like, this is just not true. Bloodborne's DLC drops an item in a highly trafficked area, the Hunter's Dream. It's almost impossible to miss this item because the Hunter goes to the Dream all the time. You pick up the item, read the description, and it's immediately obvious where you need to go. I never had to look up anything. In Dark Souls, a similar solution would be to drop an item in Firelink Shrine, at the very least, but nope, we don't even have that. edit: I misremembered, it's not even an item description, it's literal instructions! see:

A questionable outfit and/or joke scene like you'd have in old games in no way compare to the rampant, constant, ubiquitously creepy horseshit you see in so many modern JRPGs. Yeah, 1 and 2 were bad enough for weeb trash, but Cold Steel 3 really pushed the limits of my tolerance for it. The humble farmboy turning legendary wizard-warrior archetype is way overdone in fantasy now, but at the time, it wasn't a tired trope (at least in cinema) and it has definite appeal: a normal dude with hidden potential who starts out a bit of a loser, but grows and matures into a strong hero through adversity etc. and learns not to take anyone's shit. And I also love grumpy Luke because letting bitterness and jadedness get to you as you get older is very, very relatable :D Edit: Darth Vader (not prequels Anakin) and Han Solo are better characters overall, though

I unfortunately agree. I haven't played Valhalla yet, but Odyssey amplified all the bloat issues that Origins had, and that sucked, because I felt Origins was already too bloated and could have used a lot of trimming. And now I expect Valhalla to be even more bloated than Odyssey.... It's unfortunate. Perhaps with Hascoët out, things will change (not just for the employees but for game design philosophy as well, the dude sucked there too, unsurprisingly), though I don't know how much of an impact he had on this specifically.

None taken, but clearly the people discussing this topic do care about having strict standards for this award. Pretty much where I land. That's production, more than direction.I struggle to see how arbitrarily disqualifying some games/studios from a single category (category which has nothing to do with corporate management or production) would actually send a strong message at all, is all. If TGA wanted to send a message about crunch, the way to do it would be to exclude those documented problematic studios from nominations to begin with, and make a statement as to why they are excluded, and perhaps even air testimonies of devs during the show to highlight the problems. But, well, that's not what TGA is all about, lol. TGA is a celebration of vapid hype culture and fandom. It feels very naive to expect this from the group that hires random cinema celebs who likely never played a game in their lives to read a teleprompter about "telling stories" to suddenly start criticizing the industry it's intending to celebrate with all that fluff. I mean, this is the show that played War Pigs during a Call of Duty trailer, lmao. Now was some tone-deafness they could have at least avoided with minimal effort.

Thread Ian Walker (Kotaku): Games Made Under Crunch Conditions Don’t Deserve ‘Best Direction’ Awards
Exactly, it would be impossible to regulate. Some companies have widely spread articles about their crunch problems, sure, but others (especially in Japan) are secretive, and unless an employee blows the whistle, you wouldn't know if they had a crunch problem. So you might disqualify Naughty Dog, but not From Software, not because From doesn't crunch, but because they haven't been documented as such. So how do you regulate such an award, you gotta do investigative journalism on the corporate culture of all the nominees? lol. It's easy to agree with the article because it's well-meaning and feel-good, but in practice, the suggestion is myopic or borderline impossible.

While I'm fine with having awards that reward games made without crunch, I don't really agree with the premise. "Game direction" is not "corporate direction" or "employee direction", at least not in the sense that TGA defines it: It's about the creative vision and game design. Moreover, you'd have to disqualify a lot of nominees because most games are made with crunch.

I'm playing the DLC on Dream of the Strong, using weapons around 160-170+6 or +7 and armour 170+9 or so (looted from early Dream of the Demon missions), so maybe I'm missing something that's more useful for later difficulties, but I'm struggling to find much use in the Stone of Penance mechanism. I tried it quite a fair bit and all I ever get is a solid, sometimes difficulty buff, for a significant amount of time before I get a measly +1 stat to an accessory, which gives me maybe 3 points of defense. Like, what? For instance, the rematch (in that "Four Fists" post-game sub-mission, the one in the flooded castle map from the main game) was insanely brutal with a Stone of Penance at +2. I decided to remove it, and suddenly she was way more manageable, borderline easy, even. I set the Stone's difficulty to be Dream of the Strong, btw, not Demon, but the difference was still staggering. All that for ultimately +3 defense or so on an accessory?? Can anyone give me a reason to keep bothering with this mechanic? --- Unrelated question: does anyone use HDR in this game? I just installed my new OLED TV (finally!), but when I tried enabling HDR for this game, I felt like the saturation was way over the top, at least on the defaults, and it honestly looked better without it, so I turned it off. If you do use HDR, did you have to do some calibration from in-game? I have an LG 55CX, btw

160+2 for Dream of the Strong is kind of weak gear even for the main game, I think? In the main game on DotS I was running around with 160+5 or so. 170 gear is very rare at that level. I did get some weapon to drop one time, and I soulmatched that to my favourite spear, making it quite strong even at 170+5. For this DLC, well... Last time, I had dipped my toes a bit in Dream of the Demon and it's raining ~170+8 gear in there lol. I went back to DotS for the 2nd DLC, but didn't use those weapons (yet) because I feel too OP. I did keep all the good armour though, because I like being able to take hits (even so, the first boss hits really hard, as we discussed previously). All my armour is 170, between +8 and +12. I still die semi-regularly and enemies still hit fairly hard, so I don't feel like I ruined things for me. It just adds more survivability. Though, a lot of them have Active Skill Damage boosts too which is lol when they're all stacked >.> One thing that really helps in making your gear stronger: tempering and remodelling. For your main weapons, make sure to remodel to your dominant stat, you get significant boosts if you pumped a specific stat a lot (mine are Constitution and Heart since I mained the sword and spear in the regular game). Remember that tempering can re-roll some options. So, if you temper a disposable property on your weapon to get something that's decent but whatever (and cheap), like, "high attack ki damage +6%", you can grab that, and then see what new properties show up. You might be surprised. Sometimes even in the low-quality tempering I find the Constitution scaling boost A- after barely a couple of tries, which is awesome for my weapons. Temper armour too. Defense boosts, projectile damage reductions, backstab damage reductions, etc. when stacked on your entire set, can help with survivability. But, IMO for DotS, you need at least 160+5 stuff. Instead of selling off or dismantling all your divine drops, soul-match them. For example, you got a headpiece +2, and got more headpieces +2? Soul match one of those to make your headpiece +3. Then soulmatch the remaining +2 ones to make an extra +3, soul match it to your +3, gain a +4. You should be swimming in cash so that you can just spam soulmatching like that by now. ...Or just peek in the early missions of Dream of the Demon and loot some 170 stuff. lolShit no. Team Ninja has actually been really good on portraying women in this game, don't ruin a good thing.

Daaaamn that detailed walkthrough. putting in the work!Yeah that confused me at first too. If I'm not wrong, this happens when your Burst Counter reduces the enemy's ki to zero AND you hit the grapple button fast enough (though less sure about that, I think I triggered it with just the attack button a few times maybe? not sure). If you wait even half a second it will just do a normal attack on the ki-depleted enemy, IIRC, but if you press instantly after doing the counter you'll see this brief yokai grapple animation and it does tons of damage.

Here's a quick idea of the mission structure (skip to 1:15:18 if the timestamp embed doesn't work), no spoilers, just a glance the world map: You hover the cursor around and pick the mission you wanna do, ! ones are just newly unlocked ones, and it shows what type of mission it is (story or side) with the main loot reward, recommended level (which can be largely ignored tbh), etc.

Nah. Only the "enemy rush" side missions are like that. Regular story missions are big levels that you explore, grab loot, explore side paths, unlock shortcuts etc. and of course fighting enemies, but there's no strict requirement on killing enemies, there's some you can ignore. You do have to beat the boss though of course.

Thread Nioh 2 |OT| Dark Soul Cores -- 2nd DLC, "Darkness in the Capital", out now
Yes, no, yes The structure is a world map, and you select missions as they become available. Each mission is a self-contained level. There are story missions, which are mandatory for progression, and side-missions, which are typically much shorter. Story missions are typically very large levels, on par with the largest Souls levels (think Anor Londo, Central Yharnam, etc), with multiple shrines ("bonfires"), shortcuts looping back, etc. and a boss at the end. Side-missions are typically much shorter. There's a variety of types, from simple one-room enemy rushes, to 1v1 duels against another warrior, to missions that are shorter, partial remixes of previous maps (slightly adjusted and partial layout of the story maps, with different enemy/item placement, etc). They are an opportunity to gain more XP and loot, but can be skipped entirely.

is correct. Soul matching isn't all that good in NG, but in NG+ it's basically the best way to ugprade your gear, since you are unlikely to often find gear a) that match what you want (say, you want a water sword or a lightning spear or a purity kusarigama etc. with decent non-temperable passives) b) that are diviine and c) with significant + values. So, the moment you got a good divine weapon, remodel and temper it, and then make its + values go up with combining it with other + loot you can afford to consume. Otherwise, you'll be stuck with a regular, say, +1 divine for a long time until you just "find" something better.

The High-Spirit Demon remains the hardest mission overall I think (even if the boss is really easy), I remember it being a total pain in NG, and in NG+ I've been breezing but so far it's the only NG+ mission that gave me trouble. It's weird, why is everything at level 160, except the rare 170? What happened to 161, 162 etc. Just weird that you can do 160+1, +2 etc. but then nothing between 160 and 170. I also got my very first 170 drop in Calling on the Fire God, a level 200 mission. It was a weapon type I didn't main, but at least I can soul-match it. My Otegine+4 (water-imbued spear) s now level 170 with B- scaling in Constitution, by far my strongest weapon. O_o Speaking of lousy RNG, the skill drops can kiss my ass. I got exactly 2 skill drops so far (one time in NG, and once in NG+ just now, that's it). At least the first one was for a weapon I did use, but the 2nd one was for a weapon I didn't main. Bleh. Why lock skills behind super rare RNG drops? Ridiculous. As an aside, I apparently got the Plat yesterday. Huh. So ringing those bells did do something after all. I completely missed that you could ring them in NG (tried hitting and it did nothing, but I accidentally discovered that a strong attack did ring them when redoing the mission in NG+) and I was wondering what it did, it seemed kind of useless. I was hoping it'd weaken the boss or something.

(Recast as needed, refill when you reach a shrine and recast, etc.). Onmyo proficiency is kind of whack, it increases when you do damage while the spell is active. So if you cast it, damage and kill a bunch of enemies, you gain proficiency points. Eventually you'll unlock the mission. Fair warning, there's a follow-up mission later that's like, 250k points...

It's a great challenge and very tense. It's got a few cool secrets for the careful explorer. It gives a high souls payout, so the more you explore it, the higher your souls count, and so the tenser it gets because it's full of traps everywhere. You have to move forward very carefully or you'll fall to your death or get beamed to death by a Reaper ghost. It's got cool architecture and I love the transition between the moody, dank catacombs and the wind-swept, rainy cliffs outside. And the boss is easy but that's fine, because overly hard bosses with retry loops shouldn't force you to repeat a long level, but an easy boss is the perfect way to reward your careful efforts. Replaying the remake, I honestly greatly miss this kind of level design from the Souls series, it's notably absent in the follow-ups IMO. 4-2 embodies the Demon's Souls experience to perfection: a tense, meticulous level where every mistake is highly punishable but the careful and patient adventurer will be greatly rewarded.

Thread Reports indicate users abusing PS5 Plus Collection are being banned (more than 50 different accounts logged into one console)
To be fair... lots of people genuinely tried to get a pre-order on and were still not lucky enough to get one, hah. But that's a separate thing from the collection being PS5 only.

Thread I just discovered this conspiracy chart, and it's (mostly) spot on
I absolutely would. They are similarly detached from reality in extreme and inexcusable ways. See below:Yep, exactly.I think 9/11 is covered by the jet fuel thing yeah. Also, this conspiracy wasn't popular in the 90's because it literally emerged in 2001.... :POh they were around... I was exposed to a bunch of them by hanging out in Skeptics forums and such. However, the main difference is that they were extremely fringe. Now, pizzagate and Qanon is almost mainstream, what with people in Congress and even the POTUS promoting them. what's truly fucked up. I remember really laughing at the likes of David Icke back in the early or mid-2000's, but I can't say I'm laughing anymore.

Thread WIRED: The New Demon's Souls Remake Tries Too Hard to Be Realistic
TIL that moving realistically in armour is unrealistic, and that vegetation growing through decaying architecture, which every Soulsborne game already has tons of, is a "westernized convention"...Thank you! This is the fluted armor (female, or "body type A", version) chest piece. It's the knight starting gear, but it's also obtainable early for other classes (3-1 level, aka Tower of Latria). The gloves and pants are mixed light armor. I think the fluted armour looks better on body type A, despite the body type B version being more "iconic".
