Summoning is exactly this. It lets you tackle the game with more people while not changing many aspects of the games mechanics themselves. Also I strongly disagree with your point on maps. Taking that away from the player is a key part of why the world building in this game is so good. You aren't looking at way points, you're looking into the horizon and seeing where you can go next. Levels are also intelligently designed to guide you down certain paths with visual cues.

Thread VR and Tetris Effect have made me believe that games can transcend the mediums boundaries
Absolutely. I've never had a feeling quite like Tetris Effect. The stunning visuals, mesmerising music and trance like state enabled by Tetris all culminate and compliment each other. There's nothing quite like playing this game in VR, and this is coming from someone who hasn't been impressed by a VR game before outside of Astro Bot. As you say, it's a spiritual experience.

Thread RDR2 is gonna win Album of the Year, right?
Highly disagree, the stunning visuals and trance like gameplay of Tetris compliment each other so well and the music is what really brings it all together. Tetris Effect has one of the most meaningful soundtracks of any game and when you're in the midst of playing (especially in VR) you go into a zen like state. The audio design is remarkable for gameplay purposes and the songs themselves are far more than "generic pop". The amount of genres crammed into this game is insane.

Yeah it certainly depends on if you've played these games before. I play a healthy amount on PS4/Xbox One but obviously some games just fall through the gaps so a nice amount has been new to me. Also forgot to say Windjammers! One of the best competitive games you can get!

"I love the Digital Foundry videos and find their technical breakdowns fascinating, but then I look at the comments and see that some people genuinely choose not to buy games because they uncover frame skips: when someone decides to pass on a game because it occasionally drops to 57, it makes me question whether I even want to be a part of this industry." I feel this. DF do such an amazing job creating entertaining and educational videos but people ignore everything they say apart from numbers. It's why they often leave the frame rate test to the end but people still ignore them.

Thread So now that it's mostly done, what did you think of the Switch's 2018 lineup?
I had a brilliant year honestly Dragon Quest Builders was an amazing surprise and was one of my favourite examples of Switch's hybrid design. There are moments in that games that are best off played when just chilling on the sofa while multitasking and others that need your complete attention. Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion, Donkey Kong Adventure and Torna the Golden Country weren't just expansions to some of the best games of last year but felt completely distinct from the base package. Torna and DK essentially had new battle systems. Mario Tennis Aces was one of the most enjoyable games in the series and while I wish it had a bit more variety, the base mechanics were so solid and got 50 hours out of me Tropical Freeze and Bayonetta 1+2 ports were awesome, Tropical Freeze is one of the greatest games of all time and you really need to play it if you haven't. Celeste likewise is also one of the best games I've ever played, it's such a clever platformer with a deep and meaningful message behind it. It's one of the greatest gaming experiences I've ever had. Portable Dark Souls was a dream come true, I actually mocked up a screen on Dark Souls back when the Switch was first announced, got 50 hours of the Switch version despite playing around 200 of the original. Pokemon Let's Go was way better than I expected, it does strip away components but it keeps the pure fun intact. Had a brilliant co-op experience with my fiancee and really hope elements like random encounters remain for Gen 8 Kirby was great, Mega Man 11 was awesome, Super Mario Party is the best game the series has put out in years, the Street Fighter Collection was freaking sweet, Dragon Ball FighterZ on a handheld is swell, Octopath Traveler was brilliant, really enjoyed Valkyria Chronicles 4, played and loved Hyper Light Drifter for the first time, Yoku's Island Express was a great gem, Wolfenstein 2 was way better than I expected and who can say no to Captain Toad on the go. 2018 didn't have the brand new heavy hitter first party titles like BotW, Odyssey, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2 and Mario Kart 8 but there was still always something fantastic to play

We're mostly a medium where music is used to build atmosphere with subtle tones or bombastic tracks but a small handful of games feature full fledged lyrical pieces that completely dominate the moment. So, post 'em! Tetris Effect is such a powerful game and a huge part of that is owed to its music. The opening song "Connected" is amazing in the context of the game but that version cuts out the majority of the lyrics. The version used in the credits, while still a little short, puts the song in an entirely new light. Take a listen:

Absolutely do! I'm looking at the DS remakes and people have suggested I try 5. Also plan to play 11 but I may just wait for the Switch version if I'm keeping myself busy with other DQ games Interesting, looks like it's been out since 2013 in Japan but I didn't know it had all the 3DS stuff!

Thread LTTP: Dragon Quest VIII (3DS)
What an amazing game. A little background, I started Dragon Quest 8 last year and got to the point with the evil dog and then for some reason put the game down despite absolutely loving it (I guess it was around the time the Switch launched). Ever since a Japanese demo for Builders 2 was announced I've been in somewhat of a Dragon Quest mood and while I was planning to get my hands on Dragon Quest V, it made more sense to finish the game I already started. I had no idea how close I was to the end. It took half an hour or so to remember exactly what was going on but once I found my bearings it was like returning home after a long vacation. The world of Dragon Quest 8 is so rich and charming, it's a joy to simply walking around the overworld and listen to the godlike score. It was a beautiful game on PS2 and while some compromises were made on 3DS, it's still absolutely stunning to sore in the sky with the Godbird Stone while holding this tiny little system. I didn't really mind the midi tracks either, it still sounds brilliant. I dabbled in the PS2 version a little bit before diving into 3DS and my god do I appreciate all the quality of life improvements. The lack of random encounters are a game changer but there's also smaller elements like speeding up battles, not having to wait for alchemy and being able to save anywhere. I can take or leave the two new party members as they come pretty late in the game and don't really feel like part of the main gang. I didn't know that the 3DS version was harder though. I challenged the final boss at around Level 36 and some of his attacks would blow my party away in one hit. It was clear I needed to grind up a bit (He has around 1000 more HP on 3DS). I went to the Casino, explored the world and battled a lot of King Metal Slimes and it was here were a grew an even greater appreciation for DQ8. Sure, I was essentially grinding but looking all around in search of materials for alchemy gives you a sense of mastery over the world. It's such a fun place to lose yourself in and being able to put the 3DS in sleep mode or save whenever I want really helped this aspect. I wasn't too fond of when the game forced this though. Right before you challenge the final boss you have to collect 7 orbs scattered around the world, it's not a long challenge but I was already revisiting older locales to collect materials, it was a little bit of a pace killer when it became part of the story. All in all though I absolutely adored Dragon Quest 8. The characters, the charming story that doesn't take itself too seriously and the gorgeous world that ties it all together. It's not just my favourite RPG on 3DS but it's up there with my all time favourites. I wish I played this properly back when it released on PS2 but I'm glad it's this version I ended up falling in love with. Now if we could get a version with all the 3DS improvements while maintaining the original presentation, that would be fab.

Thread I hope Gen 8 Pokemon keeps the good ideas from Let's Go, and ditches the bad
Caves and surfing don't make me want to cry anymore with the lack of random encounters I also really love taking Pokemon out of their Pokeball, especially the Pokemon you can ride like Arcanine. I was initially bitter at the lack of bike but Arcanine truly is way better than a bike. Let's Go simplifies a lot of the core elements of both battles and the overworld and everything will no doubt return to form with Gen 8. Heck, we don't even have a day/night cycle in Let's Go. They made a simple Pokemon game for people who stopped playing the core games and I think they did a pretty great job - Overworld encounters really do need to make it into Gen 8. The online setup is hilarious though. Please never use this again Game Freak...

I find cries more effective for overworld encounters. If I just heard "ONIIIIX" then I'll know immediatly that there's an Onix near me, hearing its cry however still maintains a layer of discovery - especially if you aren't familiar with that cry and only recognise that it sounds different to other Pokemon you've come across. As for full on voice acting I'm not oppose to it but I only think it would work in cutscenes.

This vertical and horizontal breadth to Hyrule begged you to see absolutely everything in that world without being guided by missions - it was simply inviting and allowed the player to form their own adventure. Everyone took a different path in BotW and has different stories to tell, I think that's part of what makes it so special.

I'm a big fan of Dark Souls and didn't even notice a drop in audio quality. Not to dismiss the issue, I just didn't include it in my review because it doesn't reflect my own opinions.

Depends on the outlet and what angle they're taking for the review. Some might just review the game, others may look at the technical improvements. I went back to the PS3 verison before our code came in to see if my memories of the frame rate were reliable (not just in Blighttown) so it was rather fresh in my mind.

It's partly responsible for the decline in the quality of Halo's foundation. The series thrived because of its limitations and didn't need elements like armour abilities and semi loadouts to keep it fresh. The point of Halo's multiplayer is everyone starts with the same weapon and they dominate with their knowledge of the map and natural skill. Can't deny that campaign though, Reach had a solid single player (even if the drop ships begin to feel artificial after a while with how frequently they appear)

Thread Not sure how I feel about Mr. Iwata's perspective of Console Hardware
Wii U was the only stumble. Wii, DS and 3DS were wild successes and a great deal of that was probably attributed to their lack of power. They found a balance between value and substance and power had to be cut to enable that. I mean just look at 3DS. When it first launched it certainly didn't have the balance of Value and Substance and was seen as an overpriced failure in its first few months on the market. That was quickly turned around and today the 3DS has sold an extremely impressive amount, especially as many analysts didn't think a dedicated handheld was viable with mobile gaming being so popular. Power did nothing for the Vita and I can't see the 3DS being more powerful doing anything for it either. Do you think the Wii was only successful due to its motion controls? I would argue it was successful because it was only £180 and came with a revolutionary game. If it were just because of motion controls then PS Move would have caught on, it didn't though because it was an expensive peripheral without a killer app. Mr Iwata's perspective on hardware is different to a lot of simply because many of us want great looking games. That isn't how you make a successful console though and perhaps none of these systems would have sold anywhere close to what they did if they went for expensive cutting edge visuals. Power is indeed a pillar of Switch but Switch is also in a unique position that I don't think you can apply to previous consoles. There's no longer a massive difference between mobile and console chips, that's never quite been the case before.

Not only was he back but he was completely modernised - he even had a a 3D trophy model in Melee with a drastically different interpretation of the character. The interesting thing with Pit is this resurrected design in Super Smash Bros. would become the basis of the character going forward and he would dawn the exact same getup in Kid Icarus Uprising. Modern Pit completely feels like Sakurai's character and it's only fitting that he would also direct Uprising. A few attributes were lifted from Myths and Monsters such as his darker hair colour but for the most part, this was a complete reimagining of Pit and it's very hard to go back to his older interpretation. That's certainly a broad statement. Warioware Gold uses features that the Switch either doesn't have or would struggle with. It was made for 3DS and that's where it's best off. Then there's developers who want to make cheaper projects, perhaps even reusing assets like they likely are in Persona Q2. Some games are made for dual screens, some are touch intensive and others just aren't HD titles. It completely depends on the context and I disagree with the conclusion.

Valid points but with pretty much every Smash addition you can look back at a recent game and find that character (Smash 4 had Shulk who has Xenoblade + Xenoblade 3D - Smash Ultimate has Ridley who appeared in Samus Returns - Smash 4 also had Palutena who appeared in Kid Icarus Uprising). I think the exception to this is classic additions like ROB and Duck Hunt but they're iconic remnants of their time. Pit (Brawl) may be one of the few exceptions here as I wouldn't have called Kid Icarus an iconic landmark of the NES and his series was all but dead at the time.

I actually find Spirit Tracks delightful. I'm writing the episode at the moment and it's so clever and well designed. Most puzzles in Phantom Hourglass are basically: "PULL THESE LEVERS: 4 2 1 3" and then you do it. Spirit Tracks has a similar take on this early on apart from the clue is "Hit the right switch before the top one..." - this kind of hint makes you think about the information being relayed to you rather than just noting down exactly what it's saying. It's so much more effective with the note system. I agree that Linebeck is a great character but he's the only great character. Spirit Tracks has a far more vibrant cast and world, including one of the best Zeldas.

Thread The Yoshi's Island sequels are so uninspired and derivative
Tropical Freeze was much better than the original Trilogy in terms of level design and contextual world building. Heck, Celeste from this year is up there with the very best games ever made. There are still tremendous 2D games out there surpassing many of the efforts from the 90's.

Thread The Yoshi's Island sequels are so uninspired and derivative
I just wrapped up a playthrough of the original Yoshi's Island and dipped into its two direct sequels: Island DS and New Island. Of course these games don't have the best reputation but the quality in level design isn't their lone issue, these games are just Yoshi's Island - again. Perhaps more than any other iterative franchise, the Yoshi's Island games just feel like remakes of each other. Same mechanics, same enemies, same locations, same level gimmicks...same everything. Island DS mixed it up a tiny bit with multiple babies each with their own ability but they feel like road blocks to progression that don't really add anything substantial. New Island just straight up doesn't do anything new. Its main gimmick is giant eggs which were actually in a single stage of the original Yoshi's Island, only not quite as destructive. The New Super Mario Bros. titles may be iterative but they at least all have distinct levels that don't just feel like remakes of one another. Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Island DS and Yoshi's New Island are so boring as a series that it makes my mind numb. Even when copying the exact ideas of the original game, the sequels still hardly come close to matching its quality. The original Yoshi's Island was extremely clever with its pacing and spacing of ideas, practically every single level introduces a new enemy and with that a new way to move around a level. The sequels are a lot more sparadic in that sense. My main issue is neither of these games attempt to be better than the original, they just want to replicate it and they even fail at doing that. Nostalgia is a powerful tool but only when used sparingly. There's nothing sparing about these two. On the other hand, Woolly World simply borrows the foundation of the original rather than taking all its level themes and it worked out extremely well. It's purely the titles with the "Yoshi's Island" moniker that are so depressingly dull.

Thread LTTP: Cave Story
The 3DS version is worth playing, I wouldn't exactly say it's better in any particular way though. The Switch version on the other hand renders in 16:9, had multiple QoL improvements and a couple of neat extra modes like co-op. If you ever get a Switch then I would highly recommend that version, it's the best.

Thread Brawlout has 150,000+ Switch players, Yooka-Laylee coming as playable characters + PS4 Date
It's quite a shallow and unbalanced take on Smash with uninspired original characters - most of which have moves remarkably similar to characters from Smash. It's the indie cameos that are the most interesting part of the game but even they don't elevate the core fighting mechanics. PS All Stars is a better game and I wasn't a huge fan of that either. There's value to it if you don't have any way of playing Smash but it's not a great replacement.

Thread What's the best New Super Mario Bros. Game?
The New Super Mario Bros. series is a hard one to judge. The classic games essentially reinvented themselves each time with the only iterative title being Lost Levels. Out of Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros. 2 USA, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2, you can quite easily select a favourite game simply by how they feel to play. NSMB isn't like that. While they all have mild twists like the spin in NSMB Wii and U or the coins changing up the pacing to levels in NSMB2, they all essentially control the same and are designed with many of the same philosophies in mind. For me I think NSMB U is the most inteligent in terms of level ideas. You're still going through the generic level templates but the extent the game goes to make each level distinct is executed smoother than other entries I feel. The squirrel suit power up was also far more interesting than NSMB Wii's propeller suit which was situational and had far too much down time. There were some really cool and clever levels beyond just the awesome Starry Night inspired one (though that one certainly puts the art style into question). So which game stands out to you the most and why?

Thread When was the last time you played FFVII, and how did it hold up?
So I first played FF7 I believe in 2011? It immediately became one of my favourite games ever and I've played it essentially every year since then. It absolutely holds up and I'm worried how certain scenes will transition over to the remake. There's already some uncomfortable content in there such as the Black Materia scene - that'll play out questionably in a realistic style.

Thread SSB Ultimate: Which character that is new, or wasn't in Smash 4, has you most excited?
Ridley for sure. He's been in every single Smash game since the original but this is the first time he's playable. I've been waiting what feels like my entire life to have Ridley in the roster! As a massive Metroid fan it's brilliant to finally have another series rep beyond Samus...and Samus again. They captured his character perfectly too. Ridley actually looks like he's freaking murdering people when he's in the ring, he's so violent and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Thread I hate asset flip "X in Unreal" videos but this Metroid Prime take is fantastic
It's a very strong fan demo. I think my issues come from the use of colour, it doesn't exactly envoke Talon Overworld and more something along the lines of Halo 5's darker artstyle. Perhaps with some more moss growing on the walls to make the area seem older and untouched would benefit the overall look.

Thread I Didn't Want My Hard Work Ruined By Someone Wanting Their 5min of Fame, Says Sakurai on Smash Leaks
There are of course severe consequences to revealing classified information and while it may be within a journalists interests to share them, is it right or ethical to do so when people's jobs are on the line because of it? Absolutely not. As someone who's teased things in the past, I've never gone into specifics on what projects are and usually try to do them moments before their actual reveal. I often regret even the smaller teases. Leaks can effect company shares, employee job security and damage public perceptions on a project. Sakurai's completely right, if "Everyone is Here" leaked then Nintendo's E3 would have basically had nothing.

Valve moved away from single player games and with that Half Life is simply going to be unfinished forever. The core talent behind the games appear to be gone - many of whom seem just as frustated as us. The leaked story from Laidlaw is all the closure we'll get.

Metroid Prime's map is still one of my favourite takes on 3D navigation. Being able to rotate it in 3D space really benefits the vertical design that many of the rooms have.It also maintains Samus' visor in the UI which makes it feel like it's actually being displayed to Samus.

Thread Game Freak's Junichi Masuda Comments On Pokemon 2019, Hints LGP/LGE May Be Forward Compatible
While I agree with parts of what you're saying, if Yo Kai Watch didn't have waypoints then I would have no idea where to go. It nails creating a busy and thriving world but it's not a progression format that I would call intuitive. Pokemon on the other hand has a certain element of minimalism to its world that doesn't require the use of waypoints. You're not being sent around from point A to point B, you're just always looking for the new point A.

Thread Which Pokémon game has the best soundtrack?
Every single region in Pokémon is defined by a number of traits and perhaps more prominent than any other is the soundtrack. You can almost immediately determine what game a track is from just by the tone of the music, afterall every region attempts to capture the feel of a different culture, but which is your favourite? I personally like the small hint of sorrow in Silver/Gold's soundtrack, Heart Gold and Soul Silver made these a bit more energetic but I prefer the slower and simpler original arrangements. The city themes in particular have a radically different vibe to Red/Blue despite being on the same hardware.

They released far too many high quality games in June, I've only just got round to Octo Expansion and Hollow Knight despite getting them both the day they came out. There's no short supply of quality, I just wish they spread things out a bit more. I've not even been able to properly dive into Fortnite with all the other stuff going on.

Depends on what metric we use to define "the best". The current systems already have healthy userbases + libraries and each have a unique competitive advantage. Google would have to bring something very unqiue to the table and release a good amount of worthwhile exclusives.

Thread Would you like to see more PS4 games support gyro aiming?
We're in an interesting position now where three prominent third party games support gyro aiming on Switch but the feature is absent in their PS4 counterpart These games are of course Fortnite, DOOM and Wolfenstein 2. The Dualshock 4 is perfectly capable of gyro aiming and we've even seen it utilised in a few games such as Gravity Rush, but it's by no means a system standard. The likely response to this is "PS4 players don't care about gyro" but wasn't that the case with Wii U owners until Splatoon? All the system needs is a high profile game to implement the feature effectively and then more would follow in its footsteps. Fortnite could have been that very game. I just find it odd that we have a controller perfectly capable of gyro and we're in an era where analog+gyro assistance has become a standard on another system. Wouldn't you like to see games like Uncharted 4, God of War and Horizon benefit from gyro aiming? And if not, why not?
