Thread Hulu Buys AT&T’s Minority Stake In Streaming Service For $1.43 Billion
Yeah, it's easy to look at the spending power of Amazon or Disney and say that "Netflix's days are numbered!", but international availability is an area where Netflix incomparably excels. Content Provider spending $50m on a new show doesn't really mean all that much in the grand scheme of things if its footprint is limited and the remaining distribution rights are geographically fractured. There will -- and, for many, perhaps has -- come a point where people just default to their service/s of choice and pirate everything else as there's a financial limit to the extent they can legally support the content they watch. To be clear, I'm not saying Netflix shouldn't be worried about competition or its large-scale competitors are doomed to fail. Rather, I'm making the point that the latter need to adapt for the reality that digital distribution means international distribution, regardless of intent or contracts. To paraphrase Gabe Newell, piracy is largely a matter of service, not price.

I decided last year that I wouldn't resub. I lost interest in online gaming years ago, and with the majority of PS+ sub bonuses being multiplatform games that I already owned or were otherwise available on PC, I wasn't getting anywhere near my money's worth. Really, subscribing to an online gaming service on a console, even with the bonuses, is a very tough sell if your primary platform is PC/mobile/whatever else.

That's a fair interpretation, especially considering how dev-leaning, well, was on day one.As inky noted above, Epic does intend to implement an opt-in review system. Assuming devs won't have control over which reviews are published publicly, that won't be a terrible compromise. If nothing else, I imagine the games that are on both Steam and EGS will have reviews enabled on both stores.

I feel like you're butting against my head for no reason. The second sentence of my post acknowledges that influencers can have a part to play in the success of a game; the third sentence floats the idea that there's more to word-of-mouth than influencers; and the entire second paragraph argues that user reviews and such versus social media needn't be a zero-sum game. In short, we're not in disagreement.

I think Chet said it best (to massively paraphrase because Twitter is playing up for me): people default to Steam's review system when they're angry because it's the strongest way to make their voice heard in a manner that can't easily be ignored. While it can be argued that the system can be weaponised represents a flaw, it is, as he also said (again, paraphrasing), indicative of a bigger question: do we want to remove reviews or learn from its faults and improve communication?

I don't have direct links on hand, but Galyonkin (or Sweeney, and I apologise to Galyonkin if my memory is failing me) extolled the virtues of social media reach in response to people questioning or otherwise criticising the lack of a review or forum system; the implication being that Epic felt that said features would do more harm than good and the social media alternatives were satisfactory. To be fair, however, these were comments made in the very early days of the store, and we've already seen a few renegs since then (e.g. the refund policy), so it's entirely possible there has been some internal rethinking on reviews/forums, especially in light of users relying on Steam Community hubs for help and discussion in cases where the game hopped from Steam to EGS (e.g. Ashen).

To say nothing of Anthem's rocky road to release, haha. I understand why EA pushes for Frostbite so hard -- internally-developed tech means no licensing or royalty fees, which can add up to a pretty penny, especially long-term -- but when your developer stable spans multiple countries and languages, technical support is paramount. I think Ubi's really the only the publisher that has ironed out all the wrinkles, and it juggles no less than three engines (Anvil, Dunia, and Snowdrop).

I think that tweet is indicative of his experience and therefore calls into question Galyonkin's sweeping belief that social media is the be-all end-all of word-of-mouth success. I mean, there is no denying that Twitter, Reddit, their ilk, and especially streaming services have their place in the current Zeitgeist. But, evidently, it's a net that can fail to catch smaller indie titles such as Supraland. I am not saying social media and platforms that seek to tether developers with users are mutually exclusive. Rather, I am saying they can complement one another. That's not a belief Epic seems to share, which is an understanding I would argue is flawed -- my point. Users want to be heard, but they also want a meaningful voice; in other words, the ideal playing field rests somewhere between Steam reviews and the reach of social media that Epic hopes to rely on. I'm sure there's an element of immaturity to review bombing, but I'd argue it happens because it's the only avenue these players have to express their dissatisfaction in a way that can't be flagrantly ignored. And that represents a problem. Not only with Steam's review system -- it remains to be seen how effective Valve's new policies will be at separating the wheat from the chaff -- but with the idea of public-facing user-to-developer communication in general.

But Epic hired someone whose only relevant experience is scraping an API for data, making embarrassingly specious inferences that crumble under scrutiny, and having a woefully tepid understanding of the one platform that indirectly got him the job in the first place; and he said social media is far more valuable than platform-assisted user-to-user/user-to-developer interaction. (Side-note: That's not to imply Steam's review system is perfect. It very much has its seat in the gulf between "worthless" and "perfect".)

Thread What could Steam do better?
I want developers to have the option of configuring an unlock schedule that is . While Steam does support rolling unlocks, the list of countries eligible for access needs to be updated manually, which is why they're so decidedly rare these days. Developers have the tools to ensure all their ducks are in a row, so let them have full control over when their games are made available. I'd also like to see the option of an unencrypted pre-load that delivers game data as-is but withholds the nominated executable/s until unlock o'clock.Contrary to what Galyonkin has claimed, Valve does test games as part of the approval process and has done so for a long time now. The actual problem is that the definition of what makes something inappropriate for distribution is fuzzy. There needs to be a clear line in the sand that is drawn by policy so those who approve titles know when to raise a red flag. Something like Rape Day should've never got as far as having a store page (store pages are also reviewed as part of the approval process).

A seemingly little-known fact about Humble's 95/5 split is that (not to be confused with store page), although, to be fair, the 75/25 split that applies to Humble Store purchases is still slightly better than 70/30. Discord's 90/10 split was quite literally a knee-jerk reaction to Epic's announcement and will no doubt eventually be adjusted to something that is actually sustainable long-term (as will Epic's 88/12 split, I strongly suspect). To be clear, I do think there's wiggle room for Valve, The Big Three, etc. to increase the developer's cut without compromising the operational integrity of the platform (e.g. no need to pass on payment processing fees to customers), and that sweet spot is probably whatever CDPR has settled on.

The Steamworks documentation doesn't mention this, but Valve will cover third-party licensing fees you're willing to have your cut reduced to 40% (i.e. Valve's cut doubles). It's how Garry's Mod became a paid product, and I'd guess the same is true of Prospekt, Black Mesa, and other paid indie Source games, too. But, yeah, it's a comparatively poor deal, especially since the cut applies for life and not just until the licensing fees have been recouped. With Source 2, the only caveat is that you must release your game on the Steam Store (not exclusively, to be clear), but it's anyone's guess as to when Valve will ship an SDK.

There's merit to the idea of mandating the use of an in-house engine -- it's a higher initial cost that, at least in theory, saves money long-term as you're not paying licensing fees or royalties -- but when that requirement spans multiple studios across as many countries, support becomes extremely important. Ubisoft appears to have figured this out as it juggles no less than three internal engines, seemingly with few issues.

Sort of. I talked to Valve about that warning a couple of years ago, after Sterling published his video response to Arkane's comment that people can just use the refund system to demo Prey 2017, in which he says it's dangerous advice as players may be blacklisted from refunds, and was told "[they] look at a variety of factors in your refund behaviour before declining". I'm not saying it'll jump from 12% to 30%, just somewhere in between. Epic must be aware that passing payment processing fees on to consumers makes for a soured value proposition, and that it is doing so makes it rather obvious that such a low cut, while great for PR, simply isn't realistic as a long-term policy. I do think there's one thing that's absolutely off the table, though, and that's walking back from waiving the UE royalty fee. Regardless of how Epic's approach to the store may change, "We won't take Unreal Engine royalties from your sales revenue" will always be a key advantage.

I think that'll happen when the first contracts begin to expire in December. That Epic can afford to throw around millions of dollars willy-nilly doesn't change the fact that securing exclusivity so aggressively isn't a realistic business model; at some point, the store will need to appeal to developers/publishers on its own merits. I also suspect the revenue split will be adjusted around the same time and changed to something that's sustainable long-term, although I would say there's a good chance Epic will meet current partners in the middle somewhat and leave existing releases at 88%/12%.

The short and sort-of-incorrect answer is that the Steam Store itself uses one licence type while retail keys use another. Publishers are free to region-lock either as they see fit, but in the case of Sekiro, the store licences are region-free while all of the licences used for retail keys are heavily region locked. Consequently, the VPN trick is working only for those who purchased the game on Steam directly as you can't have an IP address based in Asia and run the game with a licence that is restricted to non-Asian territories.

I don't think anybody here or even the internet in general is against games being sold on stores/services other than Steam. What they take issue with is games being sold elsewhere Steam. Nobody cares that there are GOG and EGS versions of Darksiders 3, for example, because they exist alongside the Steam version rather than in lieu of it.It's not the consumer's fault that Epic is several years late to the party. We all know why it is engaging in monopolistic, inherently anti-consumer behaviour, but just because something may make business sense doesn't automatically mean it's reasonable and beyond reproach. Users are not beholden to corporations; corporations are beholden to their users."Something", in this case, is merely artificial exclusivity. The games Epic has moneyhatted -- thus far, at least -- would exist with or without that money.

Killer Instinct's Steam version doesn't use XBL integration but rather the Steamworks <-> XBL network API that was beta tested with Rise of Nations' UWP release. It's still, for all intents and purposes, Steamworks, which is why it has separate leaderboards despite supporting cross-play. I imagine the aforementioned API served as the foundation for the XBL integration we'll see in the Steam release of MCC, though.I neither said nor implied Microsoft's big picture for XBL rests on Halo and/or increasing the scope of MAUs on the PC. The context here is just how Steam may fit into the PC side of things in particular (if at all).Oh, I'm not asserting Microsoft has changed course. I'm simply saying the circumstances surrounding MCC's Steam release aren't quite the same as previous WinStore -> Steam releases and therefore an inference can be made that it, while not Gears 4 or Forza Horizon 4, represents the testing of an adjusted perspective. Edit: To be clear, I am not suggesting that assessment is incontrovertibly accurate. Maybe it is. Maybe it isn't. That's not entirely true. MCC is arguably Microsoft's first flagship WinStore release to hit Steam, Microsoft's first WinStore release to launch day-and-date on Steam, and the first such release to forgo Steamworks in favour of XBL integration. This isn't merely a repeat of ReCore et al.; it's Microsoft dipping its feet in the water to see if XBL-based Steam versions of its games can complement Game Pass on the PC.

Microsoft created a Steamworks <-> XBL API that was beta tested in Rise of Nations' UWP release and subsequently implemented into the Steam release of Killer Instinct, but all other Steam releases of WinStore games use Steamworks. MS could sell Steam keys while keeping the game off the store, at least for a time. Technically, Valve doesn't allow this, but it's rather loosely enforced. No Steamworks features are listed on the store page and there'll be some sort of XBL integration. It's safe to say the Steam version is going to be the very same game, just not packaged as a UWA.

Thread Denuvo-less .exe for Devil May Cry 5 leaked, performance improvements noted (up to 20FPS boost in performance, or over 20%)
To be fair, Steam DRM is what it is because it's not designed to be an inconvenience. Denuvo, in contrast, while it more effective, requires first-run activation and periodical reactivation whenever there's a "major" system change (e.g. installation of new GPU drivers). Additionally, the way Steam DRM is implemented -- you upload the executables to the Steamworks site and the backend wraps them in what Valve calls "Custom Executable Generation" -- means Valve could distribute Steam DRM-free executables to all owners with a simple game update, whereas Denuvo, being an external solution, can be removed only by the developer. Edit: That's not to suggest Valve can't make Steam's DRM solution stronger; rather, it feels that protection shouldn't come at the cost of user experience. Companies like Denuvo, on the other hand, operate with an inverse philosophy.

Steam's pre-load/retail data encryption is, to this day, ironclad, but its executable DRM is very easily circumvented and therefore wholly ineffective against release-day piracy. Denuvo, on the other hand, represents more of a challenge, although the extent to which that's the case has only dwindled since it became the plaything of the warez scene (e.g. FM2019 was cracked in less than a week, and Hitman 2 was actually cracked the on the same day it released for Gold Edition pre-purchasers).

Rather, I suspect the cut for games remaining as-is has everything to do with Microsoft not wanting to lower its cut on the Xbox side of things, where, much like Google with the Play Store, it has no real reason to cater to devs and reduce its cut, as having a digital presence on Xbox = being on the MS Store. I believe there's some wiggle room to give devs more than 70% while still ensuring running costs, payment processing fees, etc. are covered, but that magic number sure isn't Epic's 88%, let alone Discord's knee-jerk 90%. The error was quickly fixed, but CC made the eps private again and later abandoned the idea of releasing the show on Steam, so I still have no access to them. I suppose I should request a refund... or see if I can't convince Valve to make the eps public again.

That's the thing, though: there's the beta, and then him speaking from the other side of his mouth by saying it's opt-in. Evidently, there's a degree of gatekeeping. If he were honest about Sony's view on cross-play, this thread wouldn't as big as it is.

Oh, I don't doubt he's towing the line because he wants to keep his job. I just don't think the idea that he is diametrically opposed to Sony's policy on cross-play is one that earns him brownie points if he isn't doing his part -- any part -- to enact change.

I'm not sure there's a meaningful distinction to make between someone willingly taking bullets and agreeing with where they're being fired from. I mean, in this case, where it serves as a metaphor, they're either supportive or complicit. More specifically, if Layden doesn't care enough to even so much as imply that Sony could do better, then, frankly, his personal feelings are utterly irrelevant as he's prioritising Sony's corporate line above his own principles.

I am very much a fan of how the WinStore handles rolling unlocks (**), but it's absurd that we're in 2019 and it still cannot reliably deliver many-gig games. I recently took advantage of the $2-for-2m Game Pass deal that's going around and figured I'd download Gears 4 in anticipation of a catch-up with a mate next week but paused the download at ~110GB when I realised it was downloading at ~half my line speed. I thought pausing the download, properly exiting the WinStore app, reopening the app and resuming the download would kick things into gear, not unlike the download speed issues PSN tends to have -- but, no, I had to download that 110GB again. Bleh.

It's common for patches to be delayed on GOG because CDPR still handles the offline installer part of the equation itself; once an update has been submitted, it's completely out of the dev's hands as to when it'll be released to users. That's not an issue on Steam. Deep Silver could upload the latest build right now and immediately push it through to users if it were so inclined.

I made a thread in the suggestions forum roughly 18 months ago explaining why unencrypted pre-loads and automatic unlock schedules should be options, but the only replies were from Steam zealots who insisted they already existed or would be pointless without enforcement. You'd think that Ubi weaponising the manual nature of Steam's release process to put another feather in Uplay's cap would have spurred Valve into action, but, well, that was two years ago now, and here we are.

Oh, sure, but the context here is the delivery of pre-load data as it applies to playability. With WinStore titles, while your access to game data is limited, this has no bearing on how said data is delivered: a pre-load and a download post-release are exactly the same.

But Sweeney isn't going to admit that.Someone pointed this out to Galyonkin and he responded by saying Valve charges payment proceeding fees, too, but he left out the part about how that applies only to a single, region-specific payment method and isn't general policy.

Standard game data is delivered in a decrypted state, though. Pre-load data isn't, obviously, so . Regarding whether pre-loading is worthwhile, I'd say a downstream speed of 250Mbps is the point at which you might as well just download a game at unlock o'clock instead. I've said this before, but Valve really should implement an alternative pre-load option that delivers game data as-is but withholds the nominated executable/s until release, like Battle.net, Origin, Uplay, etc. do.

Yeah, but that'd only be a problem if the executables were still included. It'd be relatively easy for Valve to implement an alternative pre-load system that delivers raw game data but withholds the executables associated with the app's launch configuration until the release state has changed to "released". Edit: That's not to suggest the option not existing is the result of laziness. Rather, I'd guess the reason is the same as why there's no support for, say, automatic unlocks: an unnecessary overabundance of caution.

That's also not uncommon. We Happy Few didn't get a store page until roughly eight months after alpha keys went out, for example. I'm just going to be perfectly blunt: the devs have found a convenient excuse that allows them to abide by Epic's moratorium on publicly commenting on the nature of the exclusivity. Even Deep Silver concocted a meaningless platitude about how how the eleventh-hour exclusivity for Metro was about "investing in the future of the franchise" -- believes that. To be clear, I'm not fussed about what's happened. In point of fact, I don't blame indies at all for accepting these sort of deals. It can be frustrating, sure (I was rather miffed about Ashen, personally), but it's understandable: the indie market is a crowded one these days and it can be hard to stand out even if you've something special on your hands.

As much as Valve may not like it, pre-release access is a staple of backer/founder tiers. The developer of Jenny LeClue was selling a beta access tier via his Humble Widget until just some weeks ago, for example. Similarly, while the documentation says that pre-orders are limited to select partners, in practice Valve is happy to oblige anybody who requests a pre-order period. It's all just loose guidelines, really.

Valve will be hosting roundtable talks with devs at GDC, and the question of where the ideal cut lies -- one that's a proper fair share for devs but leaves Valve with some wiggle room to comfortably cover things like payment processing fees -- is bound to be a big topic, so it's probably safe to assume the days of 30% are numbered. 20%/15%/10% (base/>$25m revenue/>$50m revenue) would be my guess.

30% isn't absurd. While there is argument to be made that it's too high, and I myself agree with that sentiment, it's not as though Valve is taking more than Apple, CDPR, Microsoft, Sony, etc. I'd also add that it's unlikely Epic will be taking only 12% forever: at some point, it's going to stop asking customers to foot the bill for payment processing fees, increase its cut to compensate, and spin the move as a humanitarian effort about how it's "listening to [its] customers". I don't see the waiving of the UE royalty fee going anywhere, however. That'll forever be a feather in the store's cap.

1) Nothing, really. The idea is that Threadmarks is for thread updates and Highlights is for notable posts, but unless you need that distinction, you can just use one or the other. 1.5) You can just ignore that. The feature supports nesting threadmarks as a way to sub-categorise them (think sub-bullet points in a list), but this doesn't appear to be enabled on Era. 2) Reader mode takes you to a page where the threadmarked posts are displayed back-to-back. The WiFi-like icon is a link for RSS readers and clicking the multi-arrow icon allows you to change the order in which the posts are displayed on the reader mode page. 3) A thread can have only one index. Adding an index adds an "Index" button to the top of the thread that is, as far as I can tell, functionally identical to the "View all threadmarks" link in the drop-down box. It does stand out more, though.

Threadmarks are a way for OPs to index important or otherwise noteworthy posts; adding a threadmark to a post will generate a drop-down list that appears at the top of the thread. Honestly, in most cases, you'd probably be better off just updating the OP itself, but, say, if you were the OP of a TV OT and have been posting weekly recaps, you may want to threadmark them so they're catalogued and easily accessible. ;)

If fan noise isn't a particular concern to the extent that a 3dB difference may matter, then there's no need to pay the small premium for the FE. You could buy the FE from Nvidia's US site, but you'd have to import it through ShopMate or some other package redirection service, and as the warranty wouldn't apply here in Australia, you'd be up for shipping costs to and from the US should you need to RMA it. And, yeah, there's no international warranty on MSI cards, or any non-EVGA cards for that matter.

The rep the author of the article contacted for comment may not have been aware pre-orders weren't live outside of Uplay and authorised distributors of Uplay keys. In any case, "previously" is the key word here as it implies the steps necessary to remove the game from relevant services have been taken, so we'll have our answer soon enough (if the various third-party listings survive the coming work week, then we can safely assume they're outside the purview of the deal with Epic).

Perhaps my playful jab was unfair (I'm sure Polygon does good work in general, but this isn't the first time it has misreported something Steam-related), but, again, while Valve should have manually reviewed the game and approved it, the implication it was determined to be a fake game isn't accurate. It wasn't "slapped" with the restrictions, it didn't fail internal reviews, and its legitimacy as a product wasn't debated; they existed by default and remained in place because the threshold had yet to be met (bug aside). To be perfectly clear, that's the only part of the article I take issue with. I absolutely agree there should be a system in place that accounts for these situations, whereby a legitimate developer can request a review of their game and, if successful, have it ticked off as a fully-fledged product.

Yes, Valve should manually review the game and approve it, but the notion that the game was flagged as "fake" is patently false. Unless your game is being published by a publisher with a known track record, your app will have to satisfy the requirements, and until then will exist in a sort-of-limbo where Steam is "learning" about the game.
