Thursdays is "find lots of cool free stuff on the side of the road day" and I picked up about 2 yards of old fencing.
Upcycled that over the weekend to build our very own compost. The front angled boards can be removed for easy access when we move it from one side to the other for mixing and airing.
I'm really stoked with the end result. Couldn't be more happy.
And our cyberpunk front lawn has now been fully tarped and is drawing lots of curious glances from the neighbours.
Finished my latest project yesterday. Transplanted the lawn from there to areas that needed a lawn refresh.
And this is my next project, waiting on my spigot to arrive.
ThreadHorizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition for PC - Patch 1.02 is now available
At the end of the day, both avenues have merit, it's not as if one is unequivocally better or more right than the other. So as things stand we just don't want to encourage people just dropping into a thread to complain about said thread's existence. Hence the mild warning for thread whining.
As was pointed out by someone else earlier, if there is no interested in a given thread they tend to die pretty quickly and drop off the main page.
Now if in future we get to a point where a majority of threads on the main page are just patch notes, I am sure we would re-visit the rules and best practices surrounding them. For now I think we can get along with the rules around this as they are.
Now I will warn myself for derailing this thread.

With our move to Michigan last year my wife enrolled in which is like a fast track student teacher program to be recognized as a school teacher here. It's not a college program or anything but it costs upwards of 5 grand to participate in. Without it she could not work as a teacher in Michigan.

Interesting article on the history of electric vehicles.
The history of the electric car is much longer than you might think. In this article, we take a whistle-stop tour of the evolution of the EV.
Well I was thinking about adding the conventional car companies with an EV footprint, but decided against it for now as that would end up crowding out the fully electric companies... But up to the community to decide. I'd be game with either. We could also add planes. :D A few of those companies around these days.
For you to buy in the US right now? Probably only Tesla. Byton and NIO should be close followed by Faraday and Lucid. That is based purely on my outside observer impression though.
People often times seem surprised that there are more EV companies out there than Tesla, granted none of these are as mature as Tesla, but some of them might well be able to catch up and take a bite out of the market in future. Many of these will undoubtedly go the way of the dodo, as these companies are sprouting up like mushrooms at the moment. Every Chinese tech billionaire worth his or her salt is seemingly currently starting their own EV company.
I thought it might be interesting to discuss the EV market overall and how all the entrants stack up and develop over time. (location dependent):(ish)::
Non conventional primarily EV companies:
Relatively new entrant from China, with a development center in Michigan.
Relatively far along the development cycle Likely to see the light of day.
Very new entrant in the market, little is known so far.
Well into development, they have prototypes driving around the streets. They see themselves as being focused on luxury.
Based on and around the Fisker.
Electric and hydrogen semi truck company from Utah.
They actually already sell their cars in China, should arrive on western roads soon.
Formerly known as Atieva, relatively far along the development cycle.
The only bus manufacturer on the list, currently busy selling their vehicles to municipalities around the world.
The only European company on the list so far. Based in Croatia and founded by a young entrepreneur.
Whatever you want to say about Tesla and its eccentric owner and founder, it did kick start the electric vehicle development we are seeing today.
Another electric truck company with a few notable prospective clients to its name already.
Future mobility company, unclear to me what their business model actually is going to be.
Conventional automotive manufacturers with electric vehicles on the road:
Volkswagen
Conventional automotive manufacturers with sizable electric vehicle development ongoing:
If there is interest I will add more info in future, but this has already taken too much of my time as is. :p
The list is also probably also not exhaustive...

Go to Vanguard and open an account there, that can be your first action item. :)
ThreadRetirement-Era |OT| How to Invest For Retirement
As pie mentioned. Unless you are a member of the , being flexible is key. Most people you find on MMM et al. would be perfectly fine with substituting their passive income in off years.you have to remember in order to make up for a really bad year you would not need to have your high paying full time job to make ends meet as your foundation of passive income is still there. Also loads of people will take the flexibility of moving. I for one plan on primarily traveling once I am FI. And in bad years I will be quite happy to spend my time in Thailand rather than Zurich where cost of living will be much cheaper to weather out the storm, or I will spend a month longer at my parents in the summer.
Overall the 4% rule should give you plenty of cushion. and if that is too risky for you aim for the 3% rule and work how ever many years more. It will be impossible to avoid risk entirely. And if your dream is to 100% only sit on the beach drinking margaritas and never lifting a finger again, then no number is safe.
ThreadRetirement-Era |OT| How to Invest For Retirement
I disagree, the basic principle is quite sound and simple.
The more of your regular income you can squirrel away the more you can invest and build a nest egg.
Granted there probably is a cutoff point on the low end where people legitimately cannot save because they are struggling to make ends meet. Where that threshold is will obviously depend on many factors and personal circumstance. However many (most?) people can easily trim fat and save more than they currently do.
Of course assuming you avoid lifestyle creep it is much easier to save 50% of your income when you are making six figures.
ThreadRetirement-Era |OT| How to Invest For Retirement
I also only re balance by buying. most of my investment 401k, HSA, IRA, run on auto pilot, every now and then when I have a sizable chunk of money to invest manually I will re-balance by buying more of what I am low on and less of what I am high on.

ThreadHow can people call themselves ’animal lovers’ and then eat meat?
The way I see it we all live on a spectrum.
On the one end is zero ecological footprint on the other is eating engendered species every day while jet setting around the globe on a private jet and burning rain forest for fun.
To be as close as humanly possible to the one end would mean I just go and string myself up over the nearest compost heap.
Ever single thing one does moves one further up or down the spectrum.
And everyone has to find a balance and find their place on the spectrum.
Not all things are equally easy/hard.
And I would argue that on balance eating predominantly plant based is relatively speaking easy and something people have a personal choice and influence over. (To be clear I am not hand waving the existence of food deserts or any other of a multitude of personal hardships some individuals might face preventing them from eating predominantly plant based)
I'd argue it's easier than e.g. living in most places in the US without a car.
I am aware of all these things and do my best to have more of my life's choices point me towards the positive side.
Everything I do? Unequivocally not.
Could I personally do more? Probably.
Am I doing more than the average middle class westerner? Probably?
People have to understand their personal life's choices have consequences and I will continue to side eye people who are concerned about animal welfare or climate change yet do not even consider cutting down on their daily meat excesses.
ThreadHow can people call themselves ’animal lovers’ and then eat meat?
Well arguable slaughtering animals is inhumane, period.
Also I do always find it strange that many carnivores bang on about "ethical sourced meats", when the fact of the matter is that a vast, vast, vast majority of meat is not and will never be produced that way. I'd argue most people who bang that drum don't go out of their way to find a local farm but just get their meat at the local super market just like almost everyone else.
ThreadHow can people call themselves ’animal lovers’ and then eat meat?
I mean we don't need to argue about what is "easy", however beans, lentils, soy, broccoli, spinach, etc. are not exactly exclusive food staples that can only be found at Wholefoods.
ThreadHow can people call themselves ’animal lovers’ and then eat meat?
What’s so hard to understand. Many vegans/vegetarians didn’t become vegan/vegetarian because they hate the taste of meat or their favourite childhood dishes...
Also it’s about making plant based food more accessible to carnivores. Many of whom say things like “ I need Ma meat” or “proteeeeeen!”
ThreadHow can people call themselves ’animal lovers’ and then eat meat?
Personally, I don’t think this comparison works it’s about doing what is reasonably within your power.
For example I care about both the climate and animals, so we only have one car, having no car is not really reasonable within most of the US. However not me eating meat is reasonable and possible almost everywhere.
Just curious, when buying Anno 1800 on EGS or Humble, is that an uplay key? Or will I be able to play with friends who have it on Epic while I have it on uplay?
Also can I buy the season pass 2 on EGS when I have the Gold version including S1 on uplay?
[edit] It appears to not be possible to just buy DLC on EGS without owning the base game on EGS. I do wish something lime GamesAnywhere were a thing. It's showing up for 60 on Humble for me. But I will point a friend towards EGS then. Thanks!

Goodness gracious. Seems like 75% of Era users think all (or most) vegans are preachy. I hate that stereotype so much and cannot actually remember coming across preachy vegans...
I'd be lying if I said I knew anything about the scene, in the documentary they just show him breaking a world record and having broken others in the past.
I love coconut ice-cream, also the vegan ben and jerries are imho indistinguishable from their regular ice cream.
Also welcome! We are not dogmatic around here.
I consider myself strict vegetarian and for the most part vegan. Pretty much everything we cook and eat at home is vegan, but on the road it's not always easy.
Welcome to the thread.
I challenge anyone to go up to Patrik Baboumian and tell him he has low levels of testosterone and that vegans cannot bulk up.
That said he seems like a really nice fella in Game Changers I doubt he could hurt a fly.
Went to a screening of Game Changers yesterday.
Fantastic documentary, with many genuinely funny parts.
It will be on Netflix starting next wedensday and if I don't forget I'll create an OT for it then.
The focus is clearly on vegan athletes and that fabled . But it does tie it all together with environmental concerns and animal welfare at the end too.
Debunks so many common misconceptions and shows how a plant based diet is a) the fuel we are evolved to run on and no matter what more healthy and beneficial.
Some interesting tid bits I thought were interesting and want to highlightIt's a great movie, I highly recommend it if you get the chance ahead of next week, elsewise check it out on Netflix.
My favorite quote from the movie
I appreciate it, as I was going to use most of that for my OT next week and the last thing I want is for the thread to get derailed with the minutia of the strong man completion world...
There is a newish German Cuisine Restaurant in Los Angeles, . We went for the first time yesterday.
It was amazing. The Seitan Schnitzel was fantastic.
There is also an all vegan donut shop just down the road at which we overindulged on a variety of donuts...
I feel like vegan threads have become far less hostile over the last year. Still plenty of ignorance to go around but much less hostile... progress?
And lol at people celebrating having tried veganism for two(!) whole days. And then having to go back...
Fuck em.
People that are more concerned about my diet than myself can just go away...
Sorry you will have to see them again at work tomorrow...
In other news, German Era. Beyond will be available at Lidl at the end of the month.
Africa looks to me to be very similar to the arctic. Some new mechanics (water management) probably harder to find an equilibrium in ones city with some sort of story attached to it.
Man, fuck the Investor class. They are freaking insatiable, just like in real life...
I've built so many eyewear and light bulb factories, not to mention the amounts of coffee they are gobbling up...
, I would like to request that we be able to settle additional new-worlds and additional new maps overall. I am starting to run out of space but cannot be arsed to start again from scratch.
Especially when you reach Cape Trewlawny you can be very generous in leaving space between the housing and indusrty of your island, which can then later be beautified once you need a break from optimizing your production routes.
The Arctic is significantly more tricky. But as long as you have a heating station closely connected to all houses you should be fine. Each heating station requires on steady source of coal.
my problem was thelimited space so not sure how much a recommended layout works.
I'm kinda burned out on this (for now). But still really have the city builder itch.
Anyone got any recommendations? In this genre I haven't played anything but Cities Skylines, Tropico 5 or Anno (18 & 20) in the last decade.
Is there a way to see an overview of all my items and persons of interest? I cannot remember what and who I put where. I seem to have lost some things that I am trying to find...
How is one supposed to (reliably) get legendary animals/flowers/artifacts for ones museums?
I've bought everything possible from M Kahadina, but she only seems to carry stuff up to rare. I am missling like two dozen mostly legendary or epic artifacts. Going on expeditions and holding expositions seems like a huge gamble and rarely yields something I don't already have...
Nice!
Is it in any way possible to expand to new areas? I.e. a new "New World" sector to conquer?
Anyway, as Anno 1800 is a gorgeous game I thought I would share my creation.
I left the Old World behind it is in a reasonably safe equilibrium throwing off up to $10k. Once that was set I moved to Cape Trelawney.
My main capitol with the Investor blocks front and center. Once I realized the upper classes no longer need pleb stuff like markets and churches they were moved to the back of the city to where the commoners live...
Even zoomed in it looks really pretty! The power lines can be quite hideous though when you plaster an area with cobbled roads...
Better view of the harbor, lots of fishing going on there... They are providing for 50k people.
Rolling hills of wheat overlooking the city. (more fisheries in the background. I love the fact that one can freely place the fields now (as opposed to the Anno's of old), I have long strips to reach the edge of the map and then utilize as much area as possible that would else wise be wasted.
Beer and bread being harvested out back.
All the metal works have been moved to one island. All the raw materials are sent from all over the continent to this one island where they are refined and then sent on to the main island.
One of the many small islands without a population just working off their standard island population once they get their own harbor.
I feel like a dirty colonialist by just using the New World to farm coffee, cotton and rum for my empire to gobble up.
It is really hard to get a balance that works in the arctic. I have torn down the entire island twice to rebuild it from scratch to try and make it work....
They get schnaps, coal and brass from the old world to even have a chance at surviving out there...
Trying to settle a glacier for that sweet sweet natural gas is also a pain in the backside. They are very finicky and as you can see one refinery recently exploded. I have yet to replace it as they are short on workers already...
Electricity is currently a big weak spot of my main island. Trying to rely on clean natural gas is proving perilous and unreliable. I might have to suck it up and run a train with dirty oil through my main city....
I have basically spent a majority of my winter vacation building this city. - No regrets.
Finally started playing.
Quick question. Why can't I place my building here?
I guess I can see some beach below, but as I can build a road all the way around I expect to be able to build there...? What am I missing?
all the DLC is giving me plenty of quests.
really enjoying myself. But damn this is crack in gaming form. There is always a new trade route to add or manufacturing chain to optimize.
almost have content engineers now.
8M, +5k, 14k
Are any more addons or dlc planned?
my sandbox is going nicely. Must say though the world fair building is quite a disappointment. Was thinking more of something like the end game building in 2070 that fulfilled all building needs for the island.
Maybe try steaming, that maintains more nutrients than cooking.
That said, cooked vegetables still pack a punch, unless you're specifically missing something or malnourished you probably don't need to worry about it too much.
Offer to cook and make something delicious without even mentioning that at it is vegan.
Just google vegan
Just make literally no deal out of it being vegan. If someone asks where is the meat, just say the receipt didn’t call for any.
Don't beat yourself up. Especially in a work setting where I have limited control (e.g. going out to dinner with customers/colleagues; being on a business trip in the middle of nowhere) I am usually content if I find something vegetarian.
I try not to be dogmatic about it.
That said I do bring lunch to work every day.
Urgh
Why do restaurants still (?) insist on using chicken stock. Why not just use vegetable stock in everything and open up the menu for non carnivores...
Using chickpea flower is very important for the taste, don't make the mistake I did first time round and use regular flour. Tastes completely different.
Our local Whole Foods does not have the Beyond Sausages.... vadernoooo.gif
On a related note the vegan burger patties from Costco are pretty decent. We will probably always have a pack in the freezer for when we feel like that. :D
I've been making this Butternut Squash Mac-n-Cheese more often than I like to admit over the last couple weeks. :p
Add peas, carrots, etc. after blending for some extra crunch and variety. :)
Welcome welcome.
For recipes I always end up just googling " vegan simple recipe"
I love minimalist baker, because their recipes typically have very short ingredients lists and don't rely heavily on dozens of special one-off items (which I try to avoid anyway)
Might I ask why you cannot eat nuts, avocado and kale? They are all super nutritious and thereby very popular.
Probably late to he party but...
Beyond beef burgers.
OMG
Now granted I have not had real beef burgers for 10 odd years. But this taste like the real deal. Taste, texture, look.
Just a little pricey. But we are sure to have them again as a treat every now and then.
1. Well if most meals don't taste good to you I suggest you switch out your rotation.
2. A huge bag of quinoa is not that expensive at Costco.
3. Why are you concerned about calorie intake? Are you already very underweight? if not your body will self regulate to a large degree and tell you how much it wants and needs to eat. Works especially well if you are not hocked on sugars and processed foods.
Glad to hear you are back in the fold and still successful with your endeavour.
How much paperwork is it and overall would you say it is a financial success?
ThreadPrison and Police Abolition Resources and Discussion OT
I mean the bolded is kind of the point. All these changes cannot happen in isolation.
No one in their right mind is proposing just closing all prisons and police stations one day to the next and then calling it a day without other adjoining sweeping societal and policy changes. All these measures are tightly interwoven and meshed...
E.g. if everyone had housing, shelter, food and all round a dignified life guaranteed to them. Petty property crime would become a non-issue...
I ended up summoning partners for almost all bosses and I don't feel bad about it. Enjoyed the entire ride. I will be doing the same on my second playthrough.

I have little doubt that this kind of interview is an immensely stressful situation for the victim. Personal rapport and feeling comfortable seem paramount and who are we to judge who Tara Reade feels comfortable talking with.
Is MK a problematic choice? No doubt. But it’s what we have to work with. Let’s not second guess the victim for the difficult choices she has to make.
Is there any way of seeing all the family shared content such as movies in one go?
It is super annoying that I have go to to purchases and select the individual family member to see their respective purchases instead of all at one glance.
I had a Gameboy game, where you were a spaceship (?) at bottom of the screen shooting blocks up and completing rectangles from individual blocks to get points, the larger the rectangle the more points. Similar to Lumines somewhat... Not sure if I can remember more about it, but I really liked it at the time...

Coming back to the discussion the other day about the absurdity of the road rules...
It looks as if I am technically not allowed to cycle on the bike lane which I usually take to work, because it is not adjacent to the roadway at all times?!
Hey everybody, what is your take traffic rules, do you follow them all to the letter when out riding?
I find car drivers are far more concerned about my obeying the rules than themselves. I cycle home through a residential area with loads of stop signs, and I slow down but stop unless there is something coming from either side... A woman got very upset with me about that yesterday yelling out of her car while I was rolling past her. I am sure she always obeys all traffic laws...
Or in the mornings I will stop at red lights but if nothing is coming I then take off...
I feel at a disadvantage cycling in LA anyway, so I feel like taking some liberties is only fair. :p
