Thread Your game collection holy grail.
I have a collection of 1st Edition Pokémon cards that span the first complete generation of cards printed by Wizards of the Coast. My cards are in truly splendid condition and I’ve put a ton of my time and money into amassing them in a way that is fiscally responsible. The complete collection is worth more than a semester of my college tuition cost when I was still in school. But I got really creative with how I purchased the cards and I completed the collection at about 1/3 of the cost. But because my pace has been very slow, the value of the cards has increased faster than I can afford them, which has put me up against a wall for my FINAL card. Hence the black card in the first photo. 1st Edition Charizard, in the condition I need and in the correct print run, costs around $2,000. It was only $500 when I started. As much as I want it, and as much as I intend to acquire it someday, I just cannot justify the expense on my current income and standard of living. It would be immoral. So here is my ALMOST complete Pokémon card collection, save my Holy Grail: the Charizard I need to complete it. I also have a collection of all the promotional cards distributed in that time - including sealed versions of anything handed out individually.

Depending on which one you’re talking about, just a few dollars. They’re a common promo. The rarer one is the one that came in the actual VHS. That one’s worth a little more but they’re available and affordable cards.

You do? Lots of people think they have it but just have an unlimited printing of it. What’s makes the card valuable isn’t just the first edition stamp, but the version of the stamp that was used. There are effectively five printings of the Base Set Charizard that are only distinguished by printing features. They range anywhere from $30-$2000 in value, so which one you have makes a huge difference. But maybe you know this already.

Thread New Pokémon Sword and Shield info. (Customization features, pokémon camp, new pokémon )
I like Cramorant a lot. No strong feelings about Polteageist. A bit too small for my liking. I prefer my ghosts with more of a presence. Really happy with trainer customization. My dream is that all the hair/clothing/make up options will be universally available either character. I'll keep my fingers crossed in that respect but it definitely looks like trainer customization is a bigger feature than ever. I would be more excited for Camp if I could bring all my Pokémon but I don't need to beat that dead horse. It's not a feature I expect to spend much time in as is but I think it's a natural evolution of the islands we saw in Gen 7. It's a good feature but definitely not a selling point for me. The complex curry system is interesting. I enjoy these kinds of systems in other games but not sure how it could be an intrinsic experience to Pokémon. I don't mind having separate things to do in an RPG that doesn't relate to the main story or game concept but I'm interested to see how the "curry dex" actually relates to the game's other mechanics. If curries can be used to boost EVs for example and is tied to min-maxing that would be great. I'd just hate for there to be this whole complex cooking system with no application beyond that. Maybe they will have perks similar to Rotom Powers?

I think the only one that knocks me out is FromSoft. I've played some amazing games this gen, some of my favorites ever, and they've definitely positioned me to eagerly anticipate whatever they're doing next. Santa Monica, Guerilla, Capcom, Nintendo, etc. But FromSoft is the only dev where I can confidently assume I am going to absolutely love whatever they're working on and have loved almost everything they've done for the last many years. But I think this has been such an amazing generation for some studios. Even longtime studios have produced some of the best games they've ever made. I think that's been incredible. I'm pretty excited to see what's next for a lot of different companies. But From is my only stan brand.

Thread Back in the day the struggle was real
When I was a kid, if you didn't know the answer to a question, that was it. You just didn't get to know. Want to learn the lyrics to a popular song you heard on the radio? Too bad. Not sure how far away the Burger King is from the school? Oh well. Want to check if it's true there are no poisonous snakes indigenous to your state? Not happening. Before the ubiquitous nature of information, you simply couldn't know things. And before people say "well you could use a map" where the heck was a 12 year old going to find a town map? It's not like Pokémon where your neighbor's sister has plenty on hand. Finding the answer to anything that popped in your head was often time consuming, required you to buy something, and required travel. It is amazing that anyone knew anything before the widespread availability of the internet. There were so many things that I wished I could learn about when I was a little kid that I straight up couldn't and it's wild to think how different it is now.

Right?? If I want to to know the lyrics to Monster Mash I can look them up right now. That song is from 1962. Adults born before that time, and kids born during, had to wait like four decades before the lyrics to the Monster Mash were readily accessible to them. People lived and died without ever knowing the words. How did anyone ever know anything?

Thread I'm so bad at office small talk
This is so funny. I'm cracking up. Amory, some simple tips: 1) Turn questions back around. If someone says "Hey, how was your night?" just say "Fine, what about you, do anything interesting?" Then they will talk about what they did. Then say something cookie cutter like "sounds like a great Wednesday night," adjusting tone from enthusiasm to sarcasm based on whatever they did. 2) Literally just recount what you did last night. "Went home, had some dinner, then hit the couch for a while." People don't really want or need much more than that to sufficiently have their question answered. This is simple and friendly and nobody is going to really challenge you if your answer is boring. In terms of this, though:You have to stop worrying about that. The purposes of these conversations aren't to actually stimulate the brain or strengthen your emotional bond with others. It's a decompression ritual. People are social animals and just want to interact with one another a lot of the time. They're not looking for substance. It's basically just a courtesy dance. Even Garfield hates Monday. Be like Garfield.

As somebody who is immediately affected by more than one of these issues, choosing only one doesn’t feel honest at all. This reminds me of the campaign e-mails I'd get from Democrats being asked to pick which issue was "most important to me." I don't like the question even as a curiosity. I think it's counterproductive to rank life or death issues against each other. It's like ranking air, food, water, shelter, etc. At most you're deducing how long you can go without fixing a certain problem but when you don't have any you're dead either way. The only option is to fight for everything.

Thread I loved Sekiro and Bloodborne but don't enjoy any of the Souls games. Why might that be?
Honestly, people say speed, but I would much sooner say it's because Dark Souls has a lot less in common with Bloodborne (and Sekiro) than people usually suggest. Like, Last of Us has a lot of Uncharted DNA but would anybody say Uncharted and Last of Us were really comparable as game experiences? That's how I feel about Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Sekiro I wouldn't even mention in the same breath. I love all these games. I think they're some of the best the market has ever seen. But they are not mechanically similar. They're more... similar. They share some concepts but they're so different in execution and feel so different to play.

I've been stanning for Until Dawn for years... It feels so much like its time is past and its audience will never grow. They still haven't released the Road Not Taken in the US, which is part of the game they removed for a GameStop preorder. It's so obviously missing from the base game. Matt and Emily are the only pair of characters that are missing a chapter in the beginning for character building. Until Dawn is always the best it will ever be the first time you experience it, and no other game has been as successful as Until Dawn, so my first time playing it remains an unmatched gaming experience. The game outsold expectations and was really big for like and then it just fell off the map and was never heard from again. I was so sure we were going to get a bunch of anthological horror stories using the same game system but none of the follow ups have come anywhere close. :\

Thread New Pokémon Sword and Shield footage exploring one of the game's towns
It's kind of an interesting conundrum. Many Pokémon are designed for, and often depicted in, specific habitats. But the nature of Pokémon mandates that they be mobile in all environments. This issue is exemplified in the accommodations made surrounding a lot of water Pokémon: fish Pokémon levitate above the surface or else it would be impossible to use them on land. Even in the walking animations created for Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon (which are currently unused), most fish Pokémon simply levitate above the player and wiggle a bit as if they are swimming in the air. But canonically, nobody expects Lumineon or Seaking to be able to fly (and let's not even get in to the fact fish Pokémon apparently can breathe on land). Yet that is how they are always depicted. Pokémon being able to float is the answer to basically all environmental and mobility questions. Steelix has pretty much always been depicted with the ability to hover. The movement we see here is actually a much more detailed aerial movement than Steelix has ever had. But I think it will always be a little jarring to accept that if a Pokémon doesn't have legs there's a 90% chance it can float through the air without complication. Pokémon began as a series that relied on ambiguity and suggestion to communicate its creatures, battles, and environments. Pokémon following you around the overworld, for example, raised no eyebrows or concerns when they were simply little sprites with two-frame walk cycles. Pokémon battles that took place on a plain white space, or in loosely themed grass/water/cave backgrrounds, never brought in to question the nature of size or space. You were able to use your imagination to fill in the blanks because that's just how video games worked. But how do you tackle that in a realistic and compelling way when creating a 3D environment with object permanence? All Pokémon must be able to go anywhere. But when you can see so much of them on screen and the environments are no longer ambiguous, is it possible to depict Pokémon with any sort of logical consistency? The question we have to consider is whether the depictions we see in Pokémon games should ever be taken literally or if they are merely of what in some suggestive, abstract way. When we see Wishiwashi floating in battle like this: Is it really floating? Or is it just represented this way to maintain visual consistency? Are battles depicted in a literal, canonical way or are they simply a representation of what is happening in a figurative inexact way? Does it make any sense for water Pokémon, which we know for a fact live underwater, to be battling above sea-level whenever it is needed? Steelix flying around seems like something that happens to me. Steelix is a Steel type and can learn Magnet Rise so whatever. Of course Steelix and levitate. But I do think that we just have to accept that Pokémon is not a series that will ever be able to perfectly accommodate expectations of reality. I think Pokémon will always rely on players not taking everything they see on screen literally and rely on imagination to make sense of what's going on. That's how it always worked in the beginning. It would be pretty drastic to suddenly hold Pokémon to real world conventions when it comes to terrain and space. I don't know if the game would be better that way. I'm thinking probably not, though.

Thread I wish Capcom would've went with the early "blaxploitation"-style DMC5 logo
This is a pretty short thread so it's easy to see that nobody here has accused you of this or has made this claim. This seems like an odd thing to tack at the top of your OP when it doesn't seem to describe the reaction of anyone in this thread. In any case, it might be more helpful if you describe the hallmarks of the aesthetic you are comparing. Obviously a lot of posters from the 1970s and 1980s used a similar sort of "montage" design that are well outside the genre you're describing. Such as: It might be helpful to explain that montages like this were meant to advertise a sense of sensation. In the specific context of Blaxploitation cinema, this sensation came largely the sense of rebellion and empowerment by its lead characters. Because Blaxsploitation movies often featured an antihero and glorified violence, their advertising largely relied on sensationalizing its premise which gave way to an array of movie posters that featured this specific brand of "explosive collages." This is thematically similar to the DMCV logo, I believe. Although I haven't played DMC. Some more examples to accompany your own: However, the DMCV doesn't particularly read like this aesthetic to me. The monochromatic pallet and the lack of a "central hero" towering over the rest of the cast don't make it immediately comparable IMO. So I don't blame people for not making the connection. The DMCV logo is like a small portion of one of these posters. Which makes sense because it's just a logo, not a poster. But I don't think the relationship is particularly strong or obvious. Doesn't mean it's not a super cool logo that I would have hugely preferred to the one we got, though. I think it's much cooler.

Thread My girlfriend suffers from depression and I feel helpless
I have gone through this and am going through this right now so I will give the best advice I can. But a few reminders first. As much as we care about these people in our lives, we are not professionals and can never provide the care or service an actual therapist or counselor can. This is something I know I have struggled with. My SO is the most important person in my life, and I am theirs, so at times I have felt like I was responsible for curing them somehow. But helping someone you love through something difficult doesn't mean solving their problem. Being there for someone is a different job than playing doctor. Since I had problems with this before, I want to impart that knowledge up front. The biggest things I've learned are... 1) Problems like the ones you're describing have to be dealt with from the inside out, not the outside in. So it is impossible for you to solve the problem. Rather than propose solutions, you should try asking her what she would like to do. Ask if there's anything you can do for them, or anywhere you can take them, or even if they might want to be alone. Ask what you can do for them and see how that goes. When my SO it upset, something the thing I need to do to help them through that night is make dinner for them. But you should get in the habit of always asking questions. Ask "do you want to talk?" instead of saying "talk to me," for example. 2) People who feel misunderstood often struggle to express themselves as well. People who feel isolated and misunderstood are usually not well practiced at talking about what's bothering them. Sometimes it's hard to put in to words because they have only ever focused on how it feels for them and don't know how to translate that emotion in to language. It will probably never be as simple as "tell me what's bothering you." You might ask questions like "what's on your mind", or "what are you feeling" instead. My SO often expresses themselves better if they starts by describing how they're feeling or what they're thinking about in that moment and then are able to verbally walk backwards to the source. It's important you be patient because sometimes it can take a long time, starting and stopping as needed, for someone under stress to get something out. Sometimes my SO and I need to talk for an hour on and off, with something on TV to break the point of concentration, before they're able to get to the heart of what's weighing on them. 3) Ask if she would be interested in professional counseling and encourage her to attend. Seek out resources and names and numbers and try to make it as easy for her to start going as possible. We are ultimately not doctors. Our loved ones may need help we are not capable of providing. So always have this option as a sort of parallel goal. Helping someone get help is sometimes the best thing you can do. The biggest thing is that you have to listen, listen, listen. Sometimes you don't have to say anything at all. You can listen and then just give them a hug or offer them something to eat. But always ask questions rather than give answers. Sometimes my SO just wants me to lay down with them and watch 5 episodes of The Office. Emotional maintenance is not always solution-based. It's a very moment to moment thing sometimes. Being the person your girlfriend can count on that for is the most valuable accommodation you can provide. Lots of luck and love to you both. It's not easy and I don't have answers so much as some lessons I've learned personally. I hope they are helpful to you.

Thread It feels like it's getting harder to discuss thing calmly in the gaming community
on my first day here when I was just another member. It was a very idealistic post but something I really believed in and still do. For any enclave on the internet to get better, people must embody the ideals most important to them. You must ask yourself how you can contribute to the community you want to be part of. Then you have to practice it constantly. We must encourage it by becoming it. Most people are quick to blame others for communal problems. We expect the best from ourselves and the worst from others. We then seek to prove that suspicion and validate that belief at the expense of actual reflection or growth. By waiting on other people's attitudes to change, we often fail to improve the only thing we can actually control: ourselves. The result is nobody improving and nobody getting better. You could write for pages and pages for why the internet is the way it is today. People are very bitter, very tired, and very uncomfortable. Why we are like this, and if we have always been like this, could fill volumes of books. But trying to explain or rationalize the internet's venom will only go so far. Simply explaining something isn't enough to change something. For this reason I try not to focus too much on why the internet is like this. I prefer to focus on how not to be. If there's any one thing I would try to remind people of when using a forum like ours, it's that you have to approach your time here with the intention of getting along and being part of something. This is not an infinite expanse with many millions of users. It is not like twitter or reddit where you are a tiny drop in the bucket. We are a much smaller and closed community. You are a building block along with everyone else. You matter, and your contributions matter, so you should treat them like they do. Likewise, you must accept that members here are not some faceless handle you will never see again. You are 1 in 45,000, not 1 in 330 million. You share this forum with the same people every day. It's all the same faces in the same spaces. People do not just dissolve in to the crowd like they do on websites with multi-multi-million user counts. So your posts have consequences. These consequences don't roll across the surface of the great internet sea until they vanish in to the aether. They stay here. We only get back what we put out. There is no algorithm that will only show you things you like to read. There is no vote or share system that brings certain posts or opinions to the top. We are not a themed subforum meant only to attract users who think positively about a certain thing. We are all in this together. We have to treat each other like we actually matter and not like faceless strangers on the internet. We must love each other. We are all we have here. Individual responsibility and respect for others is the foundation for any community. A community will never simply something. It is very easy to sit back and say "ah, yes, people on the internet sure are terrible and I sure do dislike them." But you should be considering every single time you post if you are contributing to an environment people find welcoming and comfortable. You should be always exemplifying the exact ideal you want to see more of. If you expect that from others, expect that from yourself too. And this isn't an all-or-nothing thing. Nobody is perfect. I sure am not. Just recently I apologized to a member I offended over a joke that didn't land. It was my fault. I wanted to dunk on someone and came across way meaner than I meant to be. That really sucked. But I apologized, and we went back and forth, and we smoothed it out. The next day we saw each other in another thread and there were no hard feelings. Being better doesn't mean being perfect. Doing the right thing doesn't always mean getting it right the first time. But you always have a choice how you speak to people and how you interact with people here. This is a spirit that has to be represented by us, as members, and the posts we make and the conversations we have. Our path is a strange and difficult one. We must reject revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love. I love you all.

Thread We need to talk about Pokemon Carddass art
Bumping an old thread because it's quite comprehensive. These cards are pretty hard to buy. Most of the sellers are expectedly Japanese and the language barrier is hard for both of us. The cards also do not have great documentation so I'm doing my best to piece together information from the available listings. It seems that Carddass sets were meant to be collected and assembled in what's referred to as a "file system." So the accompanying binders are usually referred to as complete files or file systems and not usually "sets" like we commonly use in English. Some of these file systems are black: But others still are blue: It's not clear to me yet which one is related to the 1997 set that is the subject of this thread. There is an even set from 1996 that uses more traditional Pokémon art and the binder could match to that one instead. I'm still trying to figure that out because from a collector point of view obviously the intention is to have the correct binder. Another wrinkle is that sets advertised as complete are not complete. There are 153 cards in the set: one for each of the original 151 Pokémon and two bonus ensemble cards that depict Red and Blue with the started Pokémon. But the listings provide very, very little information and usually do not have an adequate description. So you have to review the pictures and see if their understanding of "complete" means the 151 Pokémon or the total 153 cards. Condition is also an issue because condition is not usually described. Sometimes it they'll just say "very good." In one instance, the seller actively discouraged purchasing their listing if you were hoping for a beautiful item:I've been poking around and trying to keep an eye on this set for a few years now in hopes of picking up the full file system in the correct condition but it sure is hard. Price is also all over the place. I'd hazard a guess that the cards do not have a market in Japan (where they are less of a novelty) and international sellers are attempting to cash in on their recent Western popularity to see how much they can get for them. That makes total sense but prices range from $200 to $500. That's a huge difference for trading cards. This has been the case for the last few years and I'm surprised they haven't stabilized yet.

Thread As brick and mortar dies, share your favorite midnight release memories
I remember lining up at Target at 6:00 AM on an absolutely freezing November morning to buy a Wii on launch day. I'd called Target the day before and they told me they would only have 36 Wiis on launch day and they were not doing reservations. I was there with a friend and it was very dark, very cold, and very weird. Nobody wanted to talk to each other. There was a clear tension over who would get one and who wouldn't. We were some of the only kids in line, although we did hang out with a couple of others. Everybody else was obviously a desperate parent trying to procure a Wii for their children. I don't remember how we killed the time until the store opened. But eventually an associate came out and handed us numbered tickets printed specifically for the event. I remember thinking they were so legit and professional. When they had handed out all 36 vouchers, they told everyone else they could go home. People were really, really mad. Well, maybe not mad. Just passionately disappointed. People waited two hours in the freezing cold to buy their kid a Wii and then they got sent home. Several people rushed the associate as if they could negotiate or change the circumstances. I listened to the employee explain over and over that there were only 36 Wiis and the were not doing reservations for future shipments and it would remain first-come first-serve. And no: they did not know when the next shipment was coming. They let us in and marched an orderly line of people with vouchers to games department. They had a lot of temporary cardboard displays set up with all the launch games on them. I remember they appeared to have the same amount of every game, which meant there the same amount of copies of Twilight Princess as there were the licensed Cars and Barnyard games. I grabbed Twilight Princess, Excite Truck, and Red Steel. I'd never owned a system at launch before. I was head over heels. My friend and I got two of the last three copies of Twilight Princess, after which they announced to the whole crowd that they were "sold out of Zelda". Then like five different parents who were clearly on a mission picked up their cell phones to urgently inform their spouses that they Zelda had sold out and they didn't know what to do. It was very weird because I was a teenager and I was there for me and my excitement. But there were so many parents who were obviously there for their kids and desperately trying to buy things based on a list they didn't fully understand. I remember somebody asking over the phone, since Zelda was sold out, if they would like Spongebob instead. Lots of them went home unsuccessful. A few years later, I met a friend who worked at a GameStop the year the Wii came out. He'd recounted to me that for all of 2007 and 2008 they sold their Wii shipments right off the delivery pallet. They did no reservations after launch, so when a delivery came, they would announce to the whole store that they received however many Wiis (usually between 5 and 8). Everybody in the store, regardless of why they were there or if they even wanted a Wii when they walked in, would rush the register to buy it. I feel like the Wii launch is largely forgotten for how incredibly insane it was. Since then, I've preordered every system I've owned and it just showed up on my doorstep on launch day. Amazing how much has changed.

Thread It's insane how a Justice League movie came out and no one gives a crap.
I was always kind of baffled by the way DC handled their material after the huge success of their animated shows. So many people grew up watching Batman, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Static Shock, Teen Titans, etc. This was mainstream superheroes way before Marvel took over. Millions of people were introduced to these characters and these universes through these shows and were loyal fans of these interpretations of the characters. These weren't comic book customers. This was the collective common media market. When it came time to jump start the DC Cinematic Universe, they didn't use any of it at all. I worked at a movie theater when Green Lantern came out. When the first poster was printed we put it up in the lobby where it was visible from the cashier counter. Almost every single day, sometimes multiple times a day, somebody would ask "Why is Green Lantern white?" They probably don't remember the name John Stewart (I didn't at the time), but they recognized Green Lantern as a certain character that was not the one Warner Bros used. I wonder what the actual recognizability data on these characters shows. I have a very hard time imagining there are more popular or more widely recognized depictions of Raven and Starfire than the Teen Titans, for example. Maybe I overstate the significance of the DCAU because that is the version of the DCU I like best. But I feel like that is where the vast majority of mainstream audiences grew familiar with the characters and they could have made much, much more successful movies playing to that expectation. I'm not even saying they should have adapted this universe. But they never used any of it. Ever. Imagine the state of the DCU right now if they made a Teen Titans movie in 2011 and established all of those characters at the time. Bah, what do I know.

Been thinking about the characters we've seen so far and what villainous motives we might see. Something I really prefer about the first two generations of Pokémon is that the villainous teams weren't trying to accomplish something globally cataclysmic. Team Rocket was a criminal enterprise with grounded goals whereas subsequent teams were trying to effectively end the world as we know it. Sun and Moon dialed it back in a way I really liked. Team Skull's goals just centered around perpetuating their delinquency and the Aether Foundation was trying to uncover and exploit Ultra Beasts. This is still fantastical but way more grounded than destroying the Earth or dissolving society or literally genocide. From what we've seen so far of Sword and Shield, everybody's position in the universe is pretty realistically contextualized. They represent local institutions and programs that are largely analogous to sports competitions. The evil team as well. Unless there is an unexpected twist or a reveal that indicates otherwise, the story we get will probably revolve around cracking corruption within these institutions and have themes about honest sportsmanship. I'm really in to that. That's way more grounded and human than most of the middle generations.

Thread New Pokémon Sword and Shield Info (Rivals, Team, Galarian Forms, cross-gen Evos)
The Eviolite Theory suggests that the reason Game Freak stopped making evolutions to existing Pokémon was due to the introduction of Eviolite. Eviolite is a held item that gives a boost to any Pokémon's defensive stats as long as it isn't fully evolved. Some believe that no new evolutions were introduced after Generation IV because this would cause a continuity issue with the item Eviolite. For example, say Ursaring received a new evolution and became part of a three stage line. Ursaring would now be able to use Eviolite even though it could not in previous games. According to some, this is an unacceptable continuity error that Game Freak would never allow. So no new evolutions of Pokémon that did not already evolve were ever introduced again. Regional evolutions in Galar seem to compliment this theory. Normal Linoone, for example, cannot evolve in to Obstagoon and therefore cannot use Eviolite. But Galarian Linoone, which is a different never-before-seen species, is able to do so without without continuity conflict. If this sounds confusing, bizarre, and arbitrary to you, that's because it is. A lot of people, myself included, hate this theory because it's totally illogical. The idea that Eviolite is some sacred cow that must be worked around and respected for the sake of consistency is ridiculous. Claims that Game Freak makes these decisions for the sake of consistency seems disproven by all the times Game Freak has made major mechanical changes that created an inconsistent Pokémon experience - including adjustments to how some Pokémon evolve, such as Feebas and Umbreon/Espeon. But even naysayers and eyerollers like me have to admit that regional evolutions seem to specifically work around Eviolite to bring back one of Pokémon's most popular abandoned trademarks. We are now sort of waiting to see what happens with Farfetch'd because the Affleck Leak doesn't indicate that Farfetch'd appears in a form native only to Galar. So if normal Farfetch'd evolves in to Sirfetch'd, Farfetch'd will be able to use Eviolite despite not being able to previously and the theory is finally killed. But if the theory is true, then we should not expect to see Farfetch'd in this game at all and will see a Galarian Farfetch'd instead.

Just threw this together for easier speculation on the July 14th rumor since we can probably identify some of the creatures implied as a result of this trailer and cross-reference with the Affleck Leak. I don't have all my rumors straight but I personally think this image is dubious. It seems to combine creatures implied in the Affleck Leak with another rumor that alleged things like a six-armed Gigantimax Machamp and an elongated Gigantimax Meowth. I don't have that rumor in front of me though. The Meowth duality is depicted in this image, however, as #7 matches Affleck's description of Meowth and #20 matches the "elongated Meowth" rumor. So either the Affleck Leak and the Gigantimax post are both accurate or this image is just combining confirmed information with other rumors for clout. I dunno, though. We'll see. It's fun to consider either way. Edit: Oh, also, next to the longcat picture is "#250026159". There's some leftover watermark/image data junk in the collage though so it could just be that.

Been thinking about Galarian forms and evolutions and who might get the makeover. Regional forms and evolutions are one of my favorite Pokémon features so I'm really excited about it. Some bulleted thoughts. 1. We saw regular Koffing before we saw Galarian Weezing, which seems to indicate there is no Galarian Koffing. Thus we know that Base Stage Pokémon can receive Galarian Evolutions. Note, however, that Koffing could already evolve. 2. Obstagoon, a regional evolution, can only evolve from Galarian Linoone. Almost certainly, normal Linoone cannot evolve in to Galarian Linoone. The normal Zizagoon line likely does not exist in Galar and probably cannot be imported under the new Dex restrictions. Both of these fit neatly in to Joe's long-touted and at this point probably true Eviolite theory: that the reason we never saw new evolutions after Gen 4 was due to the introduction of Eviolite. Eviolite, which grants a 50% boost to Defense and Special Defense for Pokémon that were not fully evolved, would suddenly work on a previously fully evolved Pokémon. This would create a continuity error or possibly make Pokémon overpowered. This is why normal Linoone should not be expected to evolve in to Obstagoon under any circumstances. Galarian Linoone will be compatible with Eviolite whereas normal Linoone will not. This does not create the continuity issue that has, in theory, limited the addition of new evolutions to existing lines. We can therefore infer from this: 1. Pokémon that already evolve can get Galarian Evolutions (ex. Koffing). 2. Pokémon that do not generally evolve will receive completely redesigned lines (ex. Zigzagoon and Linoone) If we apply this understanding to Farfetch'd, rumored to evolve in to Sirfetch'd, we can safely assume Farfetch'd will receive both a Galarian Form and a Galarian Evolution a la Zigzagoon due to the fact Farfetch'd does not generally evolve. Furthermore, when speculating on Galarian Forms, it might be helpful to observe these rules as dictated by the theory. Grumpig, for example, could not receive a Galarian Evolution. Instead, the entire Spoink line would be remade to accommodate the new third stage and not have a consistency issue with Eviolite.

I don't even think it's an issue of power. I think that concern is secondary. I think the idea is simply "this Pokémon will be able to use Eviolite even though it couldn't previously and " For reasons I cannot explain, at least according to the theory, this is why fresh evolutions to existing lines never happened again after Generation IV. I won't argue that it makes sense or that it's rational or reasonable. I think it's ridiculous. But I can't deny it any longer. I am willing to accept that this has been the train of thought all these years after seeing how the feature was finally re-introduced. The Eviolite Theory, however stupid the justification, is a perfect explanation for why this extremely popular feature was dropped and how it was finally brought back. It could still be complete nonsense but it works.

The continuity issue is simply that Eviolite would suddenly become compatible with a Pokémon it previously was not. For example, if Grumpig got an evolution, Grumpig would now benefit from Eviolite even though it didn't in previous games. This seems like a super minor problem that nobody on Earth would ever care about. I've argued against the validity of this theory for like 5 years. It seems ridiculous to be hung up on this minor detail when other major forms of evolution have been retconned in the past (Umbreon, Espeon, Milotic, etc) due to mechanical changes. It seems like a theory that immediately disproves itself due to how incredibly arbitrary and inconsistent it is within Pokémon history. It is a major restriction on the series due to an incredibly minor and mundane consequence of having one Pokémon now be able to use one item it previously could not. And yet, here we are, and the first new evolutions we see since 2006 adhere perfectly to these rules. I'm waving my white flag. I don't actually know if it's the real justification but I can no longer deny that these theorized rules appear to be observed in Sword & Shield. Edit: Oh, and normal Koffing was shown in footage of the Wild Area at one point.

Thread Disney rebooting Home Alone, Night at the Museum, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid for Disney+
It's weird because Netflix made their brand with original stories and adventurous concepts. Netflix made shows you couldn't find anywhere else on television. Disney's strategy seems to be the opposite (so far). They are just producing a huge amount of content associated with existing brands, concepts, and ideas. Retellings and retoolings and spin-offs. This seems unnecessary because Disney already owns decades worth of familiar content that people will already pay and subscribe to access. Is a remake of Home Alone supposed to make me subscribe to Disney+ more than just putting Home Alone on Disney+ to watch whenever I want?

Thread Disney rebooting Home Alone, Night at the Museum, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid for Disney+
What a bizarre assortment... Night and the Museum and Diary of a Wimpy Kid be fine as a series, but are they talking about movies here? Home Alone is a bad choice. The original movies already have a big and consistent audience and the concept is not explorable beyond its pretty confined concept. So you are either remaking the exact same movie that people still watch regularly or you are stretching a concept further than it can sustain. Let alone the challenges of adapting it in to the modern world of technology. Also, if these are all intended to be movies, it seems like they're bloating Disney+ with a ton of garbage. Disney+ as a dumping ground for a huge volume of one-off remakes and spin-offs that would previously have gone direct to video or something sounds like a nightmare to navigate. I have this weird feeling that when Disney+ has been out for a year there will be lots of articles examining how it has the aesthetic of a Wal Mart bargain bin of DVD compilations.

Some feelings now that I've thought about it a bit. 1. I like both the regional forms. I prefer original Weezing over Galarian Weezing but like Galarian Zigzagoon a whole lot. I think Galarian Zigzagoon and Obstagoon definitely exemplifies the unresolved issue regarding regional forms versus new Pokémon. Some people love regional forms for the gimmick (I am one of them) but others feel these types and abilities are better used on original monsters, which is a logical position I can respect. Obstagoon is sort of a combination of these two philosophies. I personally like it a lot and find it exciting. Regional forms and regional evolutions are some of my favorite concepts and the fact we get new Pokémon out of it too rectifies some of the issue that the unusual types and abilities are better spent on new designs. 2. I really like both the "rival" designs, particularly Marnie. I know there have been punk characters in Pokémon before (as far back as Gen 1) but it's cool to see such an alternative character design in a major role in a Pokémon game. I'm not big on Team Yell, especially its name, but I don't mind it conceptually. I think Team Skull was so good and worked so well that it will be difficult to recapture that charm. Team Yell already feels like it's playing second fiddle to fond memories of Team Skull for me. 3. I continue to be intrigued by all the evolved Pokémon that appear in the wild. I wonder how this will affect game balance and party assembly. I'm so used to only seeing base forms in the wild. Evolved forms in the wild in previous games were either uncommon encounters or related to some kind of gimmick (such as call for help). There being evolved Pokémon roaming around Galar in seemingly plentiful number is definitely not what I expected. How will this be balanced? There must be some kind of gatekeeping to prevent you from catching a high level fully evolved Pokémon early in the game. 4. While I retain my anxiety of what the Hell I'm going to do with my hundreds of shinies and competitively bred Pokémon, I remain overall positive on the material we've been shown and my interest in the game remains high. I expect I will enjoy the base game very much, although I remain to be comforted over what comes after. As somebody who usually breeds for hundreds of hours and is big in to amassing a collection I worry my experience will simply end on campaign completion. I am sure these are questions that will be answered, one way or another, in time. 5. I'm annoyed it was so short.

Thread Finding the strength to cut off toxic friendships
This is a stressful and complex change and it takes a lot of strength just to arrive at the decision you've made, so good on you for that. Going through with it will still be hard and it may be something you do gradually. What's important though isn't how long it takes but rather not turning back once you start. Without knowing any of your specific circumstances, here are some general reminders to keep in mind: 1. The purpose of companionship is to make you feel safe, understood, and stronger than you do individually. It is supposed to be a net positive on your life. You should benefit from having these relationships. If you are not benefiting from having a relationship, you shouldn't have it. It is having the opposite function a friendship or a relationship is supposed to have. You shouldn't immerse yourself in a persistent negative connection that is to your overall detriment. You should remember that this is not why friendship exists. You do not deserve to be unhappy just because there's an expectation for you to be there. 2. Time invested in toxic or hurtful relationships is time you could be spending building happy and healthy ones. You only have so much time and energy. Your existential bandwidth is not infinite. Time continually spent in the wrong place is time lost. All the time you spend on these failed relationships could be spent building new ones so you should free yourself from the hurtful obligation and have more energy to spend elsewhere. 3. When so many of your relationships are negative, you do not need to replace them all 1:1. When you are used to negative companionship, even just good and rewarding connection is an improvement over your previously negative allotment. It will probably take time to make new relationships that rival the numerical equivalent of your old ones, but having just a couple positive friendships is a very meaningful replacement for many bad ones. 4. Friend "groups" are the hardest to replace. Several people all knowing each other, and knowing each other for years, is circumstantial. You will never meet another group of people that you have known since high school. As such, the structure of your friendships is going to change. You will probably have more meaningful one-on-ones or spend some time as a tag-along with others, but this is a perfectly acceptable substitute. I've found as I get older anyway I would rather have dinner with one friend than go out with six like I used to. You will definitely spend more time alone. You might reflect on your interests and hobbies more and decide to make a change. When you're coming up from a negative some people find zero peaceful in its own way. But you will make new friends and you will always have other options coming. Good luck.

I didn't go under either and just did local anesthetic and was awake for the whole thing. I usually faint when I get blood drawn but was able to get through this just fine and you will too. Plus, when it's over, you're going to have some extra teeth to give as gifts or keepsakes.

I hate warm butter, but also hate hard butter, so I am basically forced to use spreadable butters and margarine that retain both temperature and consistency qualities I prefer. I knew somebody whose family had a shrink wrapper and would return their "unopened" software to stores. Usually department stores. They'd buy the game, take out the disc, then seal the package and return it. It was really scummy. I have wondered if this is why GameStop actually opens so many of their "new" games. Funnily enough, though, they don't seem to have done that here... But I wonder if somebody returned an "unopened" game. That sucks a lot, I'm sorry that happened.

Sounds like they just didn't put the cartridge in box at check out. Does GameStop still do that thing where they don't actually sell sealed games? Even new games are opened and kept in envelopes behind the counter? In any case, I would go back immediately and complain. I imagine you will have a difficult time though because you left the store with the case. Not that you would have known.

Thread Elden Ring (FromSoftware) may be shown to the press for the first time ever privately at Gamescom 2019
My first From game was Bloodborne in 2015. I didn't get it when it was new. I don't even remember what prompted me getting it... I'd never played a game like that at the time and considered it a risky buy. I loved it so much but heard it was really different from Dark Souls and was afraid I would dislike the "slower, clunkier" combat, so I decided to wait for a remaster expecting it to be right around the corner. However, we have a cruel and hateful God, so Dark Souls Remastered didn't come until May 2018. Still, I bought it immediately and loved it like I never knew I could love a video game. I loved it so much I immediately played Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 as well. I played nothing but Dark Souls from May to October 2018. I finally got my platinum in Dark Souls 3 the day RDR2 came out - which was my deadline - and I was finally able to move on to another series. But I've felt a tinge of longing ever since. The greatest tragedy of From RPGs for me is that eventually there are no more to play. I loved Sekiro but it's not really comparable at all. Here's hoping Elden Ring delivers on that longing I've felt ever since I got that last Dark Souls 3 trophy and realized there were no more to play. I like that, despite our very different relationship to the Souls series, we both hope it ignites something special in us. May we both get what we want.

I still remember having tons of units decked out with Sol/Luna/Renewal/Vantage and just being completely unstoppable. Such an amazing pay off. From the looks of it, none of the Beginner masteries are any good, but almost all of the Intermediate or higher ones are. At a glance, it looks more worth it to go out of your way for most of the Intermediate skills. I don't know what skills you unlock along the way yet though. The only thing I am overriding is giving characters I know I want to be mounted, like Sylvain and Bernadetta, goals in Riding. This probably isn't the best or most optimized way to do it but it's at least helping me get to know characters and their skills a little better. I suspect I will find tune further on a subsequent playthrough but for now I let people study what they want and when they ask to change I let them. As for target instruction, I tend to use that to unlock the "budding talents" (three stars on the menu).

By that point not a single one of my units, except for Byleth and Edelgard, could do damage to him and they would both be killed in the process. I assumed you weren't meant to engage with him and he was just an obstacle/hazard, especially because some of the units have the ability to push you backward and in to his attack range. I will have to replay the game to figure out how you can possibly have a Thief with Steal by that map, which I remember being very early on. I don't think I had any intermediate units yet.

Despite working hard to do so, I sort of regret spending time recruiting students from other houses. Each house looks pretty balanced with its base crew and using who is available to you is part of what makes each house unique. I think I will limit this effort in my subsequent playthroughs. I can’t say my game is any better or more fun with five different magic users to choose from. I don’t want to use the same people every path either so limiting student recruits will help subsequent playthroughs stay different.

I definitely don't think all Ubisoft games have bad politics. I have also heard Watchdogs 2 is decent and I do think Far Cry 3 stands up all right as a white savior subversion to some degree of success. I just think Ubisoft generally thinks they are more successful with their politics than they actually are. Sometimes it's harmless (honestly most of the time it's harmless) but with games like Tom Clancy it's less so. Thread WIldlands' writer defends garbage writing as misunderstood "satire", attacks reviewers' "biased" "politics"
This ties in to what I suspected when I made my Ubisoft Response thread earlier this year: that some people at Ubisoft aren’t aware of the kind of games they’re making and the innate implications and politics of the themes they’re using. This has all kinds of consequences for messaging and tone. I just suspected the misunderstanding to be more on the corporate side, not the creative side. But I have not played Wildlands myself and reserve any judgment in that respect. I find Ubisoft’s relationship with politics weirdly interesting because they routinely (as a company) have this air of satisfaction with their own ideology that does not ever seem to be reflected by critics or even their own audience. They seem to think they succeed at political storytelling despite almost nobody else who buys their games thinking so. Maybe he’s totally right but I kinda doubt it. Anyway, that’s just me from my armchair.

Thread Unopened 1987 Nintendo's Kid Icarus could sell for $10,000
The factors of what makes something collectible is generally positioned atop three pillars: In video games, this usually relates to either the first appearance of a popular IP or a somehow meaningful appearance of a popular IP. Kid Icarus, in this example, is the first appearance of the brand. The DS version of Chrono Trigger, however, will likely retain value because it is arguably the "best" version of the game and it is not widely distributed.Very popular items are often widely distributed. The more that are produced the less rare the item actually is. This is why more important games, like The Legend of Zelda, sell for a third of the price that this Kid Icarus game might. Production capabilities have only improved over the last few decades, so generally the newer something is the more common it will be - forever. There are just more video games, movie posters, trading cards, or whatever printed today than there ever were in the 80s or 90s so it will be much longer before modern material become scarce enough to demand competitive bids. Items printed on a limited basis, however, will become rarer more quickly. You have to wait for people who were kids when something was new to grow up, have expendable income, and want to recapture or preserve their youth. Lots of things see their value increase 20-30 years after their release because all the kids who used to liked them grow up, miss them, and want to to hunt them down. This is when nostalgia is the biggest factor for collection and when prices tend to climb the most rapidly. For example, the cost and value of WotC Pokémon trading cards tripled between 2009 and 2016. Obviously not everything that hypothetically meets this criteria will gain or retain value but it's a good way to gauge the possible collectibility of mainstream material.

Thread Unopened 1987 Nintendo's Kid Icarus could sell for $10,000
I imagine print quantity is a huge factor here. Sealed copies of The Legend of Zelda sell for $3,000-$4,000, IIRC, but they were also massively printed. So even though it's the bigger of the four new IPs in 1986, Kid Icarus would be a rarer and possibly more coveted collectible in its sealed state.

Longhorn Steakhouse (an American restaurant chain) has a 12 oz Parmesan Crusted Chicken. It comes with a side and a salad, but you can sub out the salad for a second side. When I am feeling terrible, I order two of these. I get mashed potatoes for the side and sub out the two salads for more mashed potatoes. It also comes with a small loaf of white bread "for the table." But I get it to go. For folks at home doing the math, that's 24 oz of chicken and four sides of mashed potatoes. That's probably, like 8 potatoes. I then go home, put it all one one plate, and eat it alone on the living room coffee table. Usually while watching Futurama. This is probably my unhealthiest eating experience. It's about 4,000 calories every time. I often won't eat the following day due to the guilt. It's good though.

Thread Troy Baker: 'Death Stranding will be a statement. Kojima is trying to move the medium forward, not just trying to move copies'
This is me, too. I am sure Death Stranding will be unlike anything I've ever played before, but I remain cautious of anyone's promises after "words and deeds." Kojima has a huge following and people singing his genius is not out of the ordinary. I am very skeptical of Death Stranding and whatever his mission with it is. I truly hope it delivers and is genuinely a turning point in video games - I don't it to be disappointing - but I expect it's going to be. I'm worried all these quotes and hyped promises will do more harm than good in the long run as they build the game up in to something impossible. But I dunno. Maybe I'll eat these words. I will happily admit I had the wrong attitude. I've bought the game either way.

Thread Western or Eastern Games? Which Appeal MORE to You, and Why?
I generally do not think of games this way and often struggle wrap my head around this dichotomy. But I can agree that Western and Eastern games have certain hallmarks and tropes that make them stand out as "very Western" or "very Japanese". So, acknowledging this, I would say that I enjoy games from each hemisphere equally, but might have an easier time being sold on a Western concept than a Japanese one. For example, games like Monster Hunter do not interest me conceptually and are harder for me to get in to without playing them. But I have an easy time getting in to something like DOOM where the concept feels more familiar. I haven't played either of these games, but if you asked me to choose one right now, I would pick DOOM. But I love Sekiro just as much as God of War and I love Breath of the Wild just as much as Red Dead Redemption. I don't pick and choose the games I want to play relative to their country of origin. I don't really think of Western or Eastern games as "types" of games the way some others do. I definitely understand that the DNA of something like Mass Effect evolved from Western design philosophies and ideas and this is distinctly different from Final Fantasy, which has its own separate DNA and evolution path. I get how, in this sense, there are differences between Western and Eastern games. But I dunno. It's just not something I think about and I don't think I have a meaningful preference over either. It's hard for me to imagine playing Japanese games or playing American games. But as long as you love what you're playing I guess it doesn't matter.

Question: when students say they aren't interested in being recruited, then you get a tool tip saying they like certain stats, is the game telling you to raise YOUR stats to impress them or to raise THEIR stats (somehow)? For example, I want to recruit Lysithea, and it says she likes Magic and Faith. So I have been leveling Byleth's Magic and Faith to make her want to join my class. But is it actually referring to... stats? If so, how do you raise the stats of units not in your class? Man, this game makes me feel so stupid.

Thread Fire Emblem: Three Houses |OT| My Students' Class Reunion Can't Be This Bad!
Woof, I am finding myself more disoriented by this game than I expected. I am confused and seeing symbols or information that I don't know how to interpret. It's embarrassing. 1. How does class mastery work? In actual battle, I noticed that the experience pane includes a meter for "class mastery." At first, I took this to mean it was time to promote the unit because I wouldn't learn any more skills from it. But this didn't make sense because I was reaching class mastery around levels 4 or 5. What does class mastery mean and how to I use it? 2. It took me two whole lessons to realize that the lecture period was simply distributing experience to units based on their interests. I had no idea what was happening. I assume the side chores like horse tending give experience (and rewards) to things like riding, flying etc? So I should only assign those chores to people who would I want to fulfill those classes? I still don't fully understand how the experience and level up stuff at the end of the lecture period works. You can give target experience to students with high motivation, but then gets experience at the end of the lecture? 3. I do not yet understand how battalions are supposed to work or when to use them. I keep forgetting they're there and who has them. I discovered a replenish option which I didn't remember being explained previously, but perhaps I just missed it in the tool tips. 4. Everybody I want to recruit wants Byleth to have certain stats in skills they prefer, but I didn't understand how to raise stats like Magic when the starting class has no magic. I found out (perhaps too late) that professors will give you experience and consume one of your activity points. Knowing this is an option, I wonder why anybody would instead choose to fish or garden, unless they don't consume activity points? 5. I don't understand where class skills are coming from. Bernadette is a noble, for example. This is her class. But she unlocks skills related to archery, like the counter ability. If skills aren't tied to class, what they tied to? When should you ever promote? 6. Speaking of promotion, I don't understand how it works. You can use a seal to have somebody take an exam and get certified in a certain class. It will then ask you if you want to change to that class. What is the benefit of certifying a unit in a class but not switching to them? If skill unlocks aren't tied to class, when should you promote your units? 7. I reached the point where there were auxilary battles (paralogues, I assume) that I could choose from. But they have recommended levels (5 and 7) that are much, much higher than my units who are mostly around level 2 and 3. It took me about two hours to clear the first one because only Byleth and Edelgard were Level 7 and everyone else was 4 or below. It felt pretty good to clear a map that way where anybody getting hit more than once was certain death, but I can't help but wonder how I was supposed to have leveled my units. Before taking on the Level 7 map, I decided to spend another week schooling, only for the Level 7 map to become unavailable. I definitely could not have cleared that map with the units I had, but spending time to school them blocks off the option. Does it come back? 8. I'm playing on Classic and I reset when somebody falls, but based on the dialog on defeat, it doesn't look like anybody is dying. Is this the case? Can the students not be killed on some maps? I know they couldn't in the practice battles but I expect people to be dying horribly at this point and instead they're like "ack! how embarrassing! bye!" I've played a lot of Fire Emblem but FE was traditionally very rigid and easy to follow. I am still trying to make sense of all the new systems. I'm about 99% sure this is all going to click for me in a few more chapters and I'm going to end up restarting from the beginning. I hate feeling like I'm wasting time and resources trying to figure out a game once I actually understand it. I'm definitely enjoying the game but I'm as dumb and blank as Byleth when I play it. Other random things I barely understand... 1. Motivation 2. Authority 3. Choosing which students for singing in the choir, cooking with students, and everything it benefits. 4. Which stats (reason, magic, faith) are connected to which abilities 5. I spent like an hour trying to retrieve Dorothea's undershirt which was, in fact, not one of the "lost items" I'd read so much about.

I wish I could have gone most of life without knowing about Margaritaville. You don’t know how good you had it. However, I shouldn’t laugh too much, because this happened to me with a very popular movie. It’s “the movie with the old people swimming with all the boulders in the pool.” This movie is Cocoon, a seminal work of science fiction by Ron Howard. When I finally decided to try to figure out what movie it was that I’d seen part of when I was a little kid, I asked one of my friends and only got to “it’s a movie about old people swim—“ Before they said, bluntly, “Cocoon.”

No worries at all. I’ve seen it too. Disney Parks are obviously made for guests of all ages. The parks are so popular for this reason. I think a lot of people who make posts like mine (“imagine bringing kids to Disney!!”) are making a joke. Usually the way 20 somethings do the theme park circuit is an unrelenting gauntlet that obviously not be possible with children. The joke comes from how aggressive the touring plan usually is. So while most people are tongue in cheek like me (at least I hope), there’s obviously outliers like the Facebook post in the OP too. Because of the cost (physical, financial, emotional) of attending a Disney Park people can end up very invested in how it should be done and who the parks are for. This includes moms who are mad online and childless millennials equally.

Thread Leaked Models Showing Super Nintendo World Layout
I'm sure the really uninteresting answer is the basic combination of timing, budget, and space. 1. Guardians of the Galaxy was at peak popularity so they wanted to open an attraction as quickly as possible to capitalize on that. 2. Redressing Tower of Terror allowed them to install the ride on the desired time table at a lower cost than building a brand new attraction. Remember the Epcot roller coaster does not exist yet and would be subject to all the same experimental construction and testing as that one will be. 3. Disneyland does not have the space that Disney World does and needs to be more creative with how it uses its real estate. The Tower of Terror was right on the boundary of where they were building Marvel Land. Redressing Tower of Terror allowed them to have the attraction up early, up cheaply, and up in a location that made geographic sense. I love Tower of Terror and hate that it's closed. But the reason for doing it makes a lot of business sense. That's not satisfying but it's the truth.

Thread Link the fire, or embrace the Dark?
Hmm. This is a tough question for me to answer because I got every ending in every game for the Platinum trophy. In Dark Souls 1, I walked out of the room and triggered the ending because I simply missed the bonfire. So I suppose that's my first choice whether I wanted it to be or not. Despite being congratulated by the serpents for ending the age of fire, we all know the age of fire didn't actually end, presumably because some other undead linked the fire instead. In Dark Souls 2, I sat on the throne first. It was less clear to me in my initial playthrough what I was actually working towards and didn't feel any reason to sit on the throne. So I did. That was my first DS2 ending. In Dark Souls 3, my first ending was Usurpation of Fire. The thing is, though, since I play the games and see all the endings and the game lore is cyclical in nature, I don't feel like I "chose" any of these endings. They are just endings that happened and ultimately I chose them all at some point. I don't feel any particular attachment to any of them as being "my" ending. Dark Souls is probably the only series where I feel that way. Because other games with multiple "canon" endings, like Silent Hill 2 and even Bloodborne and Sekiro, there is always one that is my favorite that I consider my own personal conclusion. This is not the case with Souls.

Thread "Dark Souls is hard but fair"... has never been true.
I think that "tough, but fair" may be understood differently by different types of players. "Tough but fair" has never meant there wouldn't be surprise deaths or jank. Tough but fair, for me, means that despite the presence of any surprises or jank you will always be able to use what you learned upon death to advance successfully in the future. You might be frustrated to find you can't swing your weapon horizontally in close quarters and be killed with no means to defend yourself. But you will also know, for next time, you will need to do something different to overcome your obstacle. Because what makes Dark Souls "fair" is that your circumstances are . The things that kill you don't change. They won't play out any differently in subsequent attempts. The only thing that changes is how you approach it. Enemies and traps are always in the same exact place and you need to adapt what are doing to progress. This is what makes Dark Souls "fair" to me.

It seems people in this thread have been tagging their story spoilers pretty consistently so you may opt to do too. But this is for courtesy, not policy.

I don't doubt that you're correct. I just couldn't say myself because I haven't gone back. Thread A Critique of Red Letter Media’s Bigoted Content (See Staff Post)
I figured I'd post my personal experience with RLM content here. I've never talked about it before, but I used to love the Harry S. Plinkett reviews. Like, a lot. I guess it's going to read kind of bloggy. Sorry about that. It's probably not that interesting. I was in my mid-to-late teens when the original Plinkett reviews of the prequel trilogy came out. They were unlike anything else on the internet at the time and I thought they were truly sensational. I came across the Phantom Menace review shortly after its first release and was part of the crowd that clamored for them to "do the other movies" in between each review. I rewatched them pretty regularly. Every time I met someone who liked Star Wars but hadn't seen them we would make an evening out of watching them. I've seen the Plinkett prequel reviews more times each than I have seen any of the actual Star Wars films. Although I am part of the group that have "revisited the prequels" with some positivity my experience with them is still very largely defined by the RLM Plinkett videos. As the Plinkett series went on and started to have an actual narrative behind the reviews I thought it was amazing experimental film-making and a seminal internet experience. I watched the Baby's Day Out and the Avatar reviews like once a month. I thought they were really funny, but more importantly, I found them extremely validating. Having a multi-hour analysis dedicated to something you largely agree with was a thrilling self-indulgent exercise. I didn't love these videos just because I thought they were funny and unique. I loved them because I thought they were right. I agreed with them. They weren't just funny to me, they were validating. I never really got in to the actual personalities behind the show. I never watched the "real" reviews like the Half in the Bag. I was only in it for the Plinkett stuff. In a weird way those Plinkett reviews are part of why I loved Star Wars. Even though they were exceedingly negative and comedic, relating to the brand over how much I hated parts of it was really cathartic. That negativity was how I expressed my enthusiasm. While I definitely do not hold those videos in the same reverence that I did as a teenager, they definitely got me started on approaching things critically and trying to explain I liked (or didn't like) something instead of just treating my opinion like its own absolute. They are juvenile, but so was I, and they were a great place to start at my age. What changed how I felt about all of it was the Plinkett review of The Force Awakens, which prompted a great deal of self-reflection on my part. I still very vividly remember what got me reflecting on things. It was from an AV Club article linking the review. .When I read this, I thought it was spot-on. Harry S. Plinkett was always a post-modern Comic Book Guy to me. The Comic Book Guy in The Simpsons was an obvious archetype for the super-nerd who felt they were the authority on everything they loved. They spoke about their interests with pretentious exactitude and the audience was never meant to to this parody archetype. Comic Book Guy was funny, familiar, and common, but he was not portrayed as Harry S. Plinkett was interesting to me because it cranked up the intensity to an almost Troma-level absurdity but he was also often . What made him so captivating wasn't just the character, it's that you were meant to find what he was saying interesting, insightful, and even correct. You were supposed to relate to his criticism and beliefs even though you laughed at his character. I loved Harry S. Plinkett because I agreed with him. He said what I felt. The satire element wasn't only that he was extreme and perverse - it's that he gave good criticism too. This meant Harry S. Plinkett wasn't just a satirical construct, he was a reflection of the viewer. Of me, even, which I was perfectly fine with. I thought it was good to portray such intense fan criticism with a self-deprecating tilt. Like, maybe we're all super in to what we love and have a lot to say about it, but what makes us different from Besides bestiality and murder, of course. Then I watched the new video. I haven't rewatched it since, so my memory is fuzzy, but there were several instances I remember as really uncomfortable. I remember him referring to the Star Trek movies and dropping a trans slur. I remember a diversion where he says he is "triggered" by the use of the phrase "mumbo-jumbo" and then goes on a fake tirade about how racist it is. This stuff sucked but I put off my response until the end of the video. And then it ended with a diversity rant... a diversity rant. And this was really hard for me to parse. Because Plinkett was supposed to be a gross old murderer who said and did suspect things but ultimately things I agreed with. His criticism was the selling point of the series. But this wasn't Plinkett saying what I was thinking. This was Plinkett making fun of me. This wasn't me relating to the Plinkett character in a tongue-in-cheek way, this was the Plinkett character making the enemy. And that was tough. I thought back to the AV Club description of the Plinkett character from before I watched the video:After watching the Force Awakens review, I didn't think this was true anymore. Instead of being a subversive construct that peddled legitimate and insightful film criticism under the veneer of a cranked-up Comic Book Guy, he'd become something totally different. The Plinkett character was definitely a hateful slob, but he wasn't self-aware anymore. He was, unironically, the kind of character he was supposed to be parodying. I liked the Plinkett character because it took my grievances with fandom and Star Wars movies and it put them in to words. It made them funny and far-reaching and somewhat smart. But Plinkett wasn't legitimizing my armchair criticism of Star Wars movies anymore. Now he was legitimizing ideas that hurt me. That part wasn't about Star Wars. That part was about me. I just stopped watching after that and left any interest I had in their stuff behind. I was never really in to the RLM brand itself. I'm not on a first name basis with anybody. I don't know who anybody is or what they actually believe. But I know that I used to be really in to some of their content and felt really let down and targeted by that inclusivity rant. It made me rethink the whole series of reviews, and the entire character, and I felt completely alienated by something I used to really like. There have always been people who hated the Plinkett reviews and thought they were damaging to Star Wars discourse. I never gave any credence to that and still don't. I don't think saying "Phantom Menace doesn't have a main character" is damaging to Star Wars discourse. I don't think the super-flawed "how many things can you say about this character?" sequence hurts anybody. You can disagree with the method or the meaning but it's not , I don't think. But ranting about inclusivity and downplaying the significance it has, especially on young people, does hurt the discourse. It does hurt people. Because, just like I used to, there are people who watch the Plinkett reviews and laugh their ass off and think "this guy gets it!" I feel like the review for The Force Awakens validates the wrong kind of people and the wrong kind of criticism. That comes at my expense. People can take what they want from this sort of content and maybe they can more easily separate out what they agree with and what they don't. But I really hate when people respond to these criticisms with claims of satire. Satire is not a shield. It's not a magic word that means you can say whatever you want without scrutiny. The whole point of satire, the very crux of its use, is to impart a political message. Including this section as a bullet point in a long review of Star Wars and the state of the brand isn't satirizing anything. It's airing a grievance. There is no way to delegitimize this part of the critique because the review presents it as legitimate. I think continuing the Plinkett character in 2016 was a mistake. Star Wars discourse was extremely different after The Force Awakens and a character like Plinkett ceases to be subversive in an era where racists and misogynists reign social media with transparent fervor. Plinkett does not embody "the best and worst" qualities of anything anymore. It's just the worst. And that makes me think back on how much I used to enjoy the content and how many people I initiated in to the character. I still can't think of pizza rolls without thinking of Plinkett. I still sometimes say "if you want to tell jokes, go to the circus." I still sometimes say "you might not have noticed, but your brain did." Stuff from Plinkett content that has been hard-coded in to my brain from all the times I watched the videos and shared them with others. I wonder: did I change or did the content change? Did the Plinkett character become different or simply more of what it always was? Anyway, I've never watched anything else from the site and am not very familiar with any of their modern or non-character content. I don't have any personal grievance with the site or the content beyond condemning the above and being disappointed by something I used to really like. From what one of my friends told me, their contemporary content is still very largely based on validating the existing feelings of their audience. So it probably isn't for me. That's my sad story about how I used to like some funny internet videos and now I don't. Much ado about nothing, I suppose. But nice to talk about at least once. Edit: Fixed some early-morning typos.

This is cool actually. I know somebody like this too. He speaks with a really distinct cadence that’s vaguely classic Trans Atlantic but is slow and measured like he’s reading for radio. It’s like a combination of Orson Welles and Casey Kasem. It can sometimes be frustrating for him because people think he’s faking it and ask him why he’s talking like that. But once he explains it is his actual normal speaking voice people think it’s awesome. To speak like him would probably take months or even years of coaching and listening to old recordings but for him it’s completely innate. People tell him he should be an announcer of some kind or a character voice actor but he has no interest in it. Anyway, that’s my anecdote. I wonder if there is any consistency between the inflections and patterns people on the spectrum can develop or if it’s totally unique to each person.

Thread What's Your Accent?
I used to have a Boston-area accent until I moved out of the state at age 14. I never thought about how I talked being accented until I moved and it seemed like everybody was making fun of me for it. They’d tell me to say certain words, then laugh, and repeat it back to me in a way that was supposed to mimic me but sounded completely different than what I said. It was really upsetting. I felt like I was constantly being gaslit about how I actually spoke and how I actually sounded. Because of this, over my first few years of high school, I deliberately suppressed my accent and tried to talk how everyone else talked (which I already thought I did). So now I don’t have much of a Boston accent but I still have traces of it. I say “er” and “em” instead of her and him/them, for example. I probably sound vaguely northeastern American now but I don’t think I at all sound “Bostonian” anymore.

Thread Will Nintendo ever get its act together with preserving its gaming history?
Preservation is as much about access as retention. History that cannot be accessed is not particularly valuable as it no longer contributes to culture. Although Nintendo does appear to be an industry-leader for asset retention, especially from the early days of video games where other companies just... deleted everything or threw it out when they were done. Shameful. Nintendo good at this during the Wii Era and all the games from all those different devices it brought to the Virtual Console. I remember thinking it was amazing because those games would never be inaccessible again because the Virtual Console would always exist. Clearly Nintendo and I had a different understanding.

Thread Will Nintendo ever get its act together with preserving its gaming history?
Culture and media have value beyond their mere existence. Without the opportunity for consumption it ceases to be culture. This is not preservation. This is asset retention. The spirit of cultural preservation relies on access, even limited access, because without access it doesn’t exist. Media is not an object. Art and culture do not have value if you can’t engage with it. There is no value to a book you can’t read. There is no value to a movie you can’t watch. There is no value to a game you can’t play. This is why museums and libraries and archives exist. Because simply retaining something is pointless if people can’t use it. I don’t want to get in a semantic argument over language or word choice but I don’t agree with your outlook here at all. Nintendo, for the Wii generation, provided the best monetized access to legacy software in the console space. They were on to something great. Then they stopped. That sucks.

Thread Story/Narrative Choices You Regret Making Most
Mine is a little unconventional but stands out to me as the only time I ever restarted a video game because of a choice I made. Fairly early in RDR2, Arthur Morrigan (obviously this should be Morgan but my autocorrect loves , it seems) is tasked with collecting debts from the loan shark in the gang. You visit a man who doesn’t speak English and Arthur is really threatening and hostile. The man manages to communicate that Arthur can take things from around his house to make up the debt. While you’re going through his drawers and cabinets, he is standing nervously in front of a small side table. It’s not immediately obvious but it might occur to you that he is standing in front of the drawer to conceal whatever is inside. Even though I had collected enough money for the debt, I wanted to see what he was hiding, and as Arthur approaches him he does tell him to get out of the way. I felt like I was about to discover something cool. Much to the man’s distress, when Arthur raids the drawer all that’s in it is a plain wedding band. What he was hiding wasn’t particularly valuable, it was just special for him, and I’d just taken it from him even though I didn’t need to. The debt was covered. This affected me profoundly. I tried to find a way to put it back or give it back to him but you couldn’t. And even though Arthur was completely stone-faced and unfeeling, I felt sick, because despite all the cowboy killing and thievery this was the first thing I’d done as Arthur that felt deeply wrong of me to do. I couldn’t keep playing the game because I couldn’t relate or self-insert to a character who’d just done that. Let alone me know that I was the one who’d done it. That wasn’t the story I wanted to keep playing. So I restarted my game and this time made sure not to take the wedding ring.

I liked it a lot. I find rain exciting in games like this. It’s an experience I look forward to. Something I dislike about other games like RDR2 and HZD is how rarely it commits to long, regular rainstorms. BotW has my favorite rain in games.

Thread Fire Emblem: Three Houses Engadget Preview ( Previews coming soon?)
I think for people who were introduced to Fire Emblem through Smash Bros, and there are definitely many millions of us, Fire Emblem went several releases without actually enticing many of those Smash Fans. I know I had no interest in the GCN/Wii releases even in the wake of Smash Bros. I didn't have any interest in the series until Awakening. But when I think about it, I don't know what actually made Awakening more appealing to me than the previous games. It being handheld was part of it, but I hadn't cared about previous handheld games either. There was something weird about Awakening that just made it seem so much "cooler" to me. I actually bought it based on the cover art. That's the only time I've ever done that.

Don't be sorry at all. I like to think we're going through something like this together. You, me, and all the other sons who have issues with their dads. Figuring out the right thing to do for you is hard. There is no easy answer. For me, I had to leave. But we might still talk and reconcile someday. Thread How do I deal with my dad's temper at my age
I wish I had better advice for you, but I will give what advice I can. This is something I've also dealt with and not perfectly. My father has always had rage and anger issues, something everyone around him has always tolerated. He has massive thunderous outbursts where he will scream and berate people, especially family, and will occasionally smash and break things around him. These episodes were always frightening, dangerous, and unpredictable. When I was 21, during a particularly awful rampage, he told me that I was the reason he hates his life. He told me I am why he can't be the father he wants to be, and that I ruined his marriage, and I've made it easy for him to walk away from the family because he doesn't care about any of us. I remember thinking in that moment that I hoped he leave. That I wouldn't have to live with him, or see him, or talk to him ever again. But he never went anywhere. We went back to acting like it never happened. I moved out of the house permanently a couple of years later. He and I haven't spoken since November 2016. It's a little funny to see you mention shorts. My father had a big thing with shorts too, but the other way around. There were certain months of the year where he felt it was to wear pants. If he saw me in jeans in the summer or something I always got in big trouble. I can relate to how even these seemingly minor things can cause major problems. So given that, there are a few things I want to make sure you know. 1. It is not your fault that these outbursts happen. Even if something you say or do is the stimulus for these outbursts, you are not causing them and you do not deserve them. No matter what, responsibility and blame for this abuse rests squarely on your father's shoulders. 2. His anger does not come from a logical or rational place. Therefore it probably cannot be reasoned with. It is unlikely you will be able to defend yourself without making him more angry. It is unlikely you will be able to convince him he is wrong or reacting inappropriately. 3. If you ever try to talk to him, which is difficult, it will have to be when he is not angry. This is risky because you stand to possibly him angry by asking to talk about it. When my father was pissed off, I knew it would be unproductive and make things worse if I tried to address his behavior. But I did have some minor success talking to him when he was in a better mood and not mad about something. It was hard to bring it up, and I was afraid because I thought he would blow up at me, but it ended up going okay. He didn't apologize or ever do anything different, but at least I was able to say I tried to talk to him about it before I gave up. 4. The best thing for you, if possible, might be to just stop talking to him. Stop seeing him. This is easier said than done and this may not be an option for you. But if you are able to stop interacting with him, you should. The reason for this is because when you cannot control somebody who is affecting you this way, you need to make decisions and take action to help yourself. It is the only way to stay safe, and healthy, and comfortable. Even if it comes with the discomfort of breaking a family bond, the family bond you have now is destructive, and it's a better position than what you're in. Since I have stopped talking to my father, I have had some indication from my mother that he has reflected on some things and wants to talk. I don't know if I want to, or will be able to, but it does seem that sometimes picking up and leaving is the only way to make people like our fathers realize how much they hurt people around them. The only way to do this is to take action they can't ignore. The only thing that does this is leaving. I don't know if this is good advice. This is something I am still struggling with and don't have a solution to. I have no suggestions how to make your relationship with your father better. I don't know if it can be done. But I know from my own experience that the sooner you remove yourself from the equation the happier you will be. Stay strong, my friend.

Thread What’s your favorite horror film?
It's got to be The Thing for me. I wish there were more movies like The Thing. What I love about it is that it feels like a puzzle that gives you a ton of audiovisual cues that you will only pick up on if you're looking for them. The way the camera pans to suggest the path a monster took, the sound of the blood bank key hitting the ground, etc. You get all these clues and you feel like you are within inches of the true answer but you can, ultimately, never really know for sure. I find it such an amazing movie to watch, and rewatch, and I'm hard pressed to think of any execution of horror I like more. Not to mention the practical effects are some of the best I've ever seen in a movie. I intentionally never look up how they did certain things because I think there's a great wonder in not having that answer. I was so mad when Stranger Things out of nowhere said "want to know how they did that? ." They didn't even show the scene they were referring to, but I knew what they must have meant immediately. Such a bummer. Thanks for ruining that, Duffer Bros. I'm mad forever. The Thing is the only movie I can say is anything like "The Thing." I love it.

In the original Game Boy games, Bubble Beam. It has such a hardcore animation. It's so metal. It's the first one in this video, which also showcases how progressively lamer it got over time: It's not as good in Generation II, but it's still softer. Nothing compares to the brutality of that first-gen version of the move. It's radical. In the modern games, I love the potency of Close Combat.

Thread Remember the 3D craze? LOL. WTF?
I never got to try a 3D game outside the 3DS, which I wasn’t a fan of. I kept my 3D off permanently when playing. I tried it a little bit on the n3DS to see what the more-stable version was like but I still turned it off when I was done. The thing is, though, I always felt like I like 3D if the effect could be perfectly achieved. No blur, no fuzz, no color compromise, no disalignment when you move your head, just the perfect depth of field effect. The technology certainly isn’t there yet, but if it ever is, I think I might like it a lot. For me, it wasn’t fun or cool to use an effect that was so temperamental. But someday, if it’s ever “perfect”, I bet I’ll like it a lot. I admit that movies largely soured me on 3D before games started toying with it though. I worked at movie theaters from 2009 to 2015 - which was the post-Avatar 3D boom. So many hasty post-conversions. So many cheap projector upgrades. The quality of a lot of those movies were just awful. I think games is a better place for the effect anyway.

Listening to some of them in full now. Young Simba and Young Nala sound excellent. I Just Can't Wait to be King sounds good. The original song has such distinct inflections though so it's sounds a little "off." But it's a very good rendition with great mixing on the instrumentals. No love for Hakuna Matata, though. Not a fan of Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen in these roles. I know it's not really fair to say because it's lazy criticism but it just sounds so phoned in compared to most of the other performances. Like they aren't trying as hard because they're the comic relief characters. Especially with the new limited range of animations this song sounds like it's going to be real flat.

While I am not without my own biases, because I am one of these people, I think others will be surprised how popular this ends up among people who already own a Switch. I am one of those people who always felt the base Switch was "too big for a handheld" and didn't have the battery power to sufficiently replace my 3DS or Vita, which I played a great deal. But this? This is perfect. This is what I've always wanted. My Base Switch will stay docked permanently. My Switch Lite will become my primary system. I suppose it's true that it undermines the entire gimmick of the device, but for me the gimmick was never the biggest selling point in the first place. Like Nintendo says: I do believe it will be a popular and appealing second option, even for people who already own a Switch. But that's just how I feel about it. I was always a Vita guy.

You'd be amazed how often they drop the F slur in Will & Grace, a show that was considered progressive for its time. The late 90s/00s were a hellscape for this sort of stuff. It is likely much, much worse than you remember it. A lot of network TV and mainstream media had only just begun to desegregate, too.

Thread The Film “The In-Laws” Made A “Gay Man Will Like Prison” Joke in 2003
I believe it was simply social media and the internet. The rise of the internet allowed minorities and marginalized groups to meet each other, talk to each other, and consolidate in to communities with power. It allowed them to be out and open and engage with media in the same public space as everyone else. This new platform allowed them to be better seen and better heard and a lot of people who were ignorant or turned a blind eye before realized that there were real people out there who mattered. Bigoted jokes have always been offensive and humiliating. They were just as offensive then as they are today. Black people and trans people and gay people didn't simply appear out of nowhere, you know? Something people often omit (not you) when they say things like "this is just how it was back then" was that there were just as many people back then you were hurt, offended, and degraded by this rhetoric. The difference is that nobody cared what they thought because they "weren't the audience" and didn't have a voice. If I had to say, 2008 to 2010 is when things really started to change. It is harder to ignore the people you are degrading when suddenly they are loud, proud, and everywhere you look. Inclusivity is also good for business to capitalism did its thing too. Why alienate people you can sell shit to?

Sword and Shield are the most visually impressive Pokémon games by a meaningful margin. Whether you are pleased with it or not is a totally different story, of course, but Sword and Shield is many times more grand than any of the 3DS games and Citra is not enough to change that. I definitely get that it's not as grand of a leap as people wanted, hoped, or possibly expect, but that doesn't mean the improvement isn't otherwise apparent. I would say Uncharted 2 is equally successful at reaching that peak. People will have other opinions of similarly "perfect" gaming experiences and of course it's all subjective. Even just from a technical perspective it falls short, wouldn't you say? This isn't a dig at Bloodborne, which is a seminal and transformative gaming experience, but I don't think I can say a game where people's mouths don't move when they speak and and your sword is constantly clipping through your clothes delivers on the concept of perfection. Bloodborne, for all its wonder, would still benefit from refinement and minor revision. RE4, not so much. I can't think of anything I'd want improved.

Sun and Moon are two of my favorite Pokémon games and I'd recommend them to anybody. The Ultra Games butcher the story beyond recognition and would not recommend them for that reason. If you're upgrading to benefit breeding and competitive battling and stuff, that makes sense, but if you want the best version of the games, go with Sun & Moon. Thread What do you think about projecting yourself onto characters in media?
It's one of two things: 1) The main character is meant to represent literally you 2) The main character is under-developed on purpose as to not have any traits or qualities that could clash with the average reader A lot of anime and video games have main characters like this, but I generally don't like them and don't take to them myself. Some media is made specifically to accommodate this for the viewer.

Thread What do you think about projecting yourself onto characters in media?
Personal relation is one of the most natural and strongest ways to connect with something. I think for a lot of people it's intuitive and automatic and a form of empathy. To see yourself in something else, and to connect with that person or thing on a personal level, can be a moving and meaningful experience. I don't often "self-insert" where I imagine the main character is literally me. But I like media where I can identify traits, values, and experiences that feel comparable or relatable to my own. Even if that point of comparison can see really out there. I know it when I feel it, you know? I have a lot of feelings playing God of War 2018, for example, because of my own relationship with my father. None of the things that happen in that story literally represent anything I've gone through, but the emotional under-current is present, and I project in to that relationship. I also really love the movie Brick, by Rian Johnson, and the way it portrays a heightened and dramatic story about high school kids and how that perfectly captures how I felt in high school. At that point in my life, I had never experienced anything more adult or stressful than that. So everything at that point felt really severe and scary and dramatic. The story in Brick is totally unlike anything that would ever actually happen in a high school, but I'm able to project myself in to it because I remember what it felt like to take things that seriously. I think it just comes down to how you relate to the media you consume. I bet a lot of people do it without even thinking about it.

Thread Let's conceptualize a Kingdom Hearts clone created by Atlus and featuring Looney Tunes and other Warner Bros. IP
I'm in for Animaniacs on the Warner Bros Studios lot. Yosemite Sam and the Tasmanian Devil. Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote. Probably use Harry Potter as the weird live-action stand out that doesn't fit the rest of the properties, right? The interesting thing here to me isn't the properties themselves, but how you'd conceptualize the original characters. Warner Bros cartoons have a different flare and personality than Disney ones. They're self-aware, edgier, and more violent. So we wouldn't have a character like Sora and themes like friendship as the backbone. I feel like it would be more tongue-in-cheek. The protagonists would be named, like, Checkers and Bonbon. Checkers is a boy in a cowboy costume and Bonbon is like an amateur mechanic girl. The plot revolves around the Warner Bros worlds being fractured after union-busting measures left all the cartoons and WB characters disenfranchised. There is deep distrust between characters and "worlds" and that lack of confidence and the eagerness to lay blame creates conflict. But Checkers and Bonbon, grandchildren of the Warner Bros studio head, are determined to bring the characters back together to make Warner Bros Animation profitable again so that their grandfather will buy them a speedboat. Welcome to the world of Fractured Lots.

Thread White man blames autism for causing him to call police on Black women at pool
Well, he may still have autism. That's kind of the thing here. I'm not an absolute expert here so if I am wrong somebody please feel free to correct me. Autism is a pretty common condition with a spectrum of severity. This is sometimes referred to as "being on the spectrum." You may also be familiar with lower-level Autism traits in the form of Asperger's Syndrome. While the condition varies in severity, many millions of people have it, and it's not the same as being mentally unwell. It's just a condition some people have, which depending on its severity may require additional sensitivity to accommodate, but it's a normal and manageable condition that isn't a mental health disorder. People on the autism spectrum sometimes have difficulty with social cues, seek rigid routines, and may have some difficulty learning through conventional education. They may also have innate talents and gifts for things like music and math. The spectrum manifests in a great variety of different ways and (I believe) one in every sixty people is somewhere on the spectrum. There are likely members in this very thread who have it. You probably know several people with it. But for all the ways autism manifests, being racist isn't one of them. Something a lot of people with autism find very frustrating is when their condition is conflated with hateful or damaging behavior. This is a pretty big consequence of chan culture using "autism" to describe behavior they find intense or stupid. People on the spectrum, even people who go from 0 to 100 as a matter of emotional habit (as the person in this story describes) are no more predisposed to hatred or bigotry than any other person. Attributing these things to autism is often hurtful to people on the spectrum who then have to contend with stereotypes that their condition makes them bigoted or intolerant. A way to think of it, I think, is that autism can make you shift between extremes or react to things more intensely than others. So if you are racist, you may express that racism intense or extreme ways. Of course, there is often a need to take greater care when approaching people who do exhibit more severe autism traits. They are differently-abled people. There are different tactics and methods for communication that should be utilized when possible. I think people reacting to the story, which seems pretty racially motivated, are doing just that: reacting. certainly nobody is harassing or dehumanizing somebody based on this article. Just that this story is frustrating and unfortunate, especially for black people who are targets of this kind of prejudice. The only treatment for autism is educational and behavioral therapy. This person seems to really need it. I hope they get it and can stop acting this way towards other vulnerable minorities.

Thread Xbox has a bolder ecosystem. PS4 has more popular exclusives. What if next gen launches at the same time AND price point for the first time ever?
It's an interesting question for sure. I think it's honestly the defining question of this next generational shift. I think the services and devices Microsoft produces are the best in the console industry. I think they've done amazing things with their technology as the generation has gone on. Not just in terms of the console itself, but in peripherals and infrastructure too. Microsoft has created a platform that I would strongly prefer to play every single one of my video games on. It's an ecosystem that feels like it's growing and broadening and I like that a lot. That's a very strong foundation to launch in to a new generation with. I owned a PS3 and now a PS4, namely because of the exclusive software. But I can't say that Sony has impressed me at all with its hardware or services since launch. My PlayStation 4 feels exactly the same as it did when I bought it at launch. The Pro upgrade, which I made, felt compulsory rather than exciting. I don't know. I think Xbox has done a better job at being exciting and indicating the direction their system is moving next gen. There is still time for Sony to do that, of course, but they haven't yet. The change from last gen to current gen saw a lot of people leave Xbox for PlayStation. I think there are a lot of factors that contributed to this, but I think one of the biggest ones was that it was a clean break for both consoles. You couldn't take anything with you. Your games and your saves needed to stay behind. That fresh start meant you could only play what was coming moving forward. I think people felt better at the time of what PlayStation was promising back then. But these days, heading in to Gen 8, I kinda feel better about what Xbox is doing. But this time there's not going to be a clean break. It sounds like it will be an iterative set of systems that will try to keep everybody cemented in their current ecosystems. I wonder if the allure of new technology will bring people back to Xbox or if people have gotten comfortable enough on PlayStation that it won't matter. I think I will always have a PlayStation for the exclusives. But, for the first time, I might explore owning both consoles and making Xbox my lead machine. Time will tell.

Thread Pokémon UltraSun & UltraMoon |OT| What is this, a crossover episode?
Well, I’m at about 70 hours. I’ve reached the point where I’m just hunting legendaries in the wormholes. After that I will resume my indefinite breeding. But I am really disappointed with this third version. Every third version I’ve ever played felt like a definitive and vastly superior version of the game. The Ultra games do not. There are positives. The Ultra Warp Ride is cool. Mantine Surfing is a fun diversion. The PokéDex is outstanding. Battles can be very difficult and that difficulty was welcome. I like the Ultra Recon Squad and I like the new Ultra Beasts. Mechanically, there’s no reason to go back to the original games because the resources you have for raising Pokémon are greater. But Rotom Dex went from one of my favorite parts of the base games to my most hated. It never stops talking. It’s dialog is completely context unaware. I am often blocked from using a second screen function for several seconds because Rotom is always talking. And if you interrupt Rotom in some way, it starts over. It’s extremely irritating. Rotom is one of my favorite Pokémon and I loved the original Rotom Dex but this was unbelievable. Story wise, the game is a disaster. Lusamine is ruined. Lillie and Hau’s dynamic is ruined. The localization has been simplified and meaningful scenes and dialogs are removed. And content wise, there are so many empty holes in the game that seemed like prime opportunities to expand. Wela Volcano still has no dungeon. The Dream Park hasn’t been built. Kahili still doesn’t have her own plot. And all the content that was divided between the original Sun and Moon remains divided here. Costumes, legendaries, etc. Sun and Moon are some of my absolute favorite Pokémon games. I truly, truly love them. But these revisions are my least favorite ever. I would never recommend them to somebody over the original games. That sucks. I will continue to play the games indefinitely. This is the curse of Pokémon. But these should have been so much more than what they are. I hope other people liked them more than me.

Rotom’s extra-talkative personality changes didn’t bother me too much during the game progression. It was definitely annoying and obtrusive but it wasn’t the worst. But revisiting old areas makes Rotom talk It will give the same advice repeatedly, over and over, within only a couple minute’s time. Breeding is unreal because Rotom says “this is the part I give you advice you didn’t ask for.” I saw that image during the leak and thought it was fake but it’s actually in the game! Rotom never stops talking. You can change your passport photo! There’s a restaurant that gives presents after dining! Over and over and over. I don’t know what triggers Rotom to talk but it’s killing me. Rotom is one of my favorite Pokémon and I liked Rotom Dex in the base game but this is egregious.

Maybe it’s just because it’s my second time through or maybe there’s just more interruptions (like Rotom, which we’ve discussed). But it appears my tolerance for this has been lowered. It wouldn’t be so bad if the game didn’t fade to black for everything. Missing animations, a change of camera angles, the end of a conversation, everything. It’s like the game is blinking. I don’t dislike the content but the presentation is wearing on me.

A personal pet peeve of mine is having several of the same exact character model on screen at the same time. There’s a house in Iki Village with a room that has three identical men in it. Three is the magic number. Paniola Ranch can have three identical ranchers. I hate it. It destroys my immersion. This only worked with sprites where I was using my imagination. It’s dumb when there are so many fully rendered 3D humans without any variation of clothing, hairstyle, or skin tone.

I hate these black screens. They were one of my biggest complaints in Sun & Moon. Here’s an example... When breeding, sometimes I would accidentally talk to the Miltank instead of the rancher. Doing so triggers a dialog box that can’t be canceled. The Miltank heals you when you do this. To indicate this is happening, the screen fades to black. There are so many fades to black. There are fades to black even for nothing. Walking up to an NPC that tells you to turn around has two black fades. There’s so many fades and it’s obscene. It turns something that should be instanteous into a several-second affair. But yeah, there are tons of shortcuts and problems that are unacceptable even in USM. We’re just so used to them.

I thought I would like a more talkative Rotom, but I don’t. I also don’t like how he is constantly sad unless you touch him. I also haven’t figured out what triggers the blinking eyes to play Roto Loto. I like Rotom Dex in general but he’s a bit too overbearing in this game. Speaking of the Dex, they removed on of my favorite features: there’s no longer a rainbow color splash and a sound effect when you complete a page in the Dex. It cannot he overstated how much I loved that feature and how satisfying it made filling up my Dex pages. It was a principle motivator for me to complete the original Alola Dex because it made everything feel so kinetic and alive. Now it just feels dead and static. Back to just checking boxes.

But it’s really cool to replay a game with all these adjustments. I’m sure I would be less keen on a replay if I’d done another run of the original game, but to dive back in after a year it’s just exciting to see what’s different. It’s been cool so far. I did this for the first time with Moon and I didn't really like it... I thought I would. Who wouldn't want to know which of their favorite Pokémon were available? Who wouldn't look forward to kicking butt with a premeditated team for maximum fun factor? But when I actually did it, I don't know, it didn't work for me. I think choosing my own Pokémon makes me play it too safe. It makes me only use powerful Pokémon that make the game too easy and more predictable. I ended up abandoning that playthrough and did something weird instead. Basically, I would catch every new Pokémon I found, so I always had a massive and unorganized haul of Pokémon in my PC. Every time one of my team members reached its final evolution, I would box it and replace it with something else that still needed to level up. This meant I was always using new Pokémon, and always checking which TMs they could learn, and very quickly filling my PokéDex by always seeing an evolution line through. Towards the end of the game I'd found a team of five I really liked and stuck with for the Elite 4, but then I continued to rotate out a low-level Pokémon who needed help leveling up. I'll probably do that again.

I was telling someone the other day, I think everyone affords themself one game to serves as little more than a comforting timesink. Even if they know they could play something new, or different, or better, that special indulgence always seems to seize their idle time more easily than anything else. For me, that's Pokémon. These Ultra games are missing literally the only features I had hoped to see, but it was never going to sway me from buying it. I've been playing Moon continuously since launch. It made sense for me to upgrade if only to remain up to date with my favorite opiate. There's only one new form, Dusk Lycanroc. Everything else is an new Pokémon (which are all legendaries). The lack of new forms, particularly regional variants, is an especially sore spot for lots of fans. It's a repeated joke from Bojack Horseman. Whenever two characters are in the room together, one of them asks this question. It's a ham-fisted catchphrase that's funny because it's not funny. Also, unrelated, but you have a really beautiful avatar. Is that art from something?

Thread NYPD on Twitter: "We regret to inform that Desmond Amofah aka Etika has been found deceased." (See guidelines before posting)
The first thing to realize, which I think you're close to on your own, is that other people's experiences are different from your own. What is normal and consistent and lifelong for you can be very different for somebody else. People tend to relate to other people through shared experience. You recognize something somebody is going through because you went through something like that too. This helps people connect with other people. But when somebody's experience is different than yours, and you can't personally relate, the first thing to do is to leave your own expectations and experiences behind and open up to theirs. Not understanding how people with mental health issues feel is a big reason they are stigmatized and often feel alone. They are called crazy or weak and they lose friends and struggle to make new ones because people who share their issues act like something is simply wrong with them. So when trying to understand what somebody else is going through, it helps to try to just listen to what their experiences are and try to form an image of world instead of yours. Telling to people to toughen up (or worse, "man up") puts the onus on mentally unwell people to simply get better. It's telling them that whatever they're feeling is their own fault and their own responsibility and they can just get better if they tried. This is something that works for some people, but for people who struggle with mental health this is the worst thing you can say to them. This doesn't offer them help. This doesn't make them feel understood. It makes them feel small, weak, and guilty. People suffer and struggle and sometimes even die trying to act like nothing is wrong and everything is fine. You have to meet people on their terms, not yours. A lot of men in particular lack the emotional literacy to understand that they are unwell. They are depressed and anxious and self-harming, but they try to "man up" and suppress what they're feeling. Feeling like they can't ask for help without first admitting weakness stops people from coming forward, talking to others, and getting help. It gets worse and worse and has terrible effects on their lives and the lives of others. Ignoring problems, or minimizing them as something you can overcome with simple force of will, reinforces this system. We have to help people admit when they are over their heads. We have to help people admit when they need help. We have to make getting help easy, and honest, and welcoming. Because when this is not the case, the result is tragedy. So you should be careful not to reinforce the idea that all people need is a change of perspective or to try harder at feeling better.. You shouldn't make people feel weak or incapable for not handling things we well as you have. That doesn't make them feel better. It makes them feel worse.

Usually I am trying to protect one other person from being hurt or lost from the human element of the chaos. But I will also feel like it's pointless because we are all going to die anyway. Thread Poll: What is the hardest game you've beaten, and would you have done it today?
The first time I played Bloodborne it was insurmountable. I'd never played a game like Bloodborne before. It was like something out of another universe. It didn't feel like video games were supposed to feel. Everything I was accustomed to games having, or doing, or being, was simply not present in Bloodborne. I took me more than 10 hours of nonstop failure to reach the first boss. I did so terribly that my weapon degraded, making the experience significantly worse and even harder. But I didn't know that weapon degradation existed, or how it worked, let alone how to fix it (impossible at this point in the game). I consumed all my resources to the point where I was just running pathetically in to a grinder with a broken weapon and zero resources to try to proceed. It was a humiliating experience and the most amount of time I ever wasted trying to enjoy a video game. This was hands down the most difficulty I've ever had playing a video game. But I went on to platinum Bloodborne, and the Dark Souls trilogy, and no longer consider these games very difficult. So while I don't find the experience difficult today, nothing will beat how hard it was for me at first.

Thread The battle with Red will never be topped
What really makes this memory for me was that I didn't have the internet at this age and kids played Pokémon slow. I had no idea what was waiting inside Mount Silver. I already had the legendaries and thought it would just be a really big dungeon with rare Pokémon in it. When I first saw Red on my screen I had no idea what I was looking at. At first I thought it was "me" and didn't understand why there was a copy of me waiting there. I didn't know what would happen when I talked to it. I saved the game not in case I lost a battle but because I was actually a little scared about what was about to happen. When the textbox came up as just ... ... ... I still didn't know what was happening. When the battle started and I realized what I was doing, I was gobsmacked. I had never played a video game with this sort of continuity before. It was not something I knew to be possible. I didn't know this was an idea anybody could ever even come up with. My tiny little lizard brain grew three sizes that day as I galaxy-brained myself in to a whole new world of what video games could do. It was a profound moment in my young life that was otherwise lacking in any sort of astonishment.

I like remasters. I don't always revisit them if they're a game I've already played, though. But when it's a game I haven't actually played before, and I'm pitched an opportunity to play it in a "better than ever" form, it's definitely encouraging to jump in. I think that's the real function of the remaster. It reinstalls the game or franchise in to public consciousness. It gives you an opportunity to market it again and for players to be aware of it. It motivates people to give it a chance, which even if they always could, they might be more motivated to do with a celebrated re-release. I can definitely understand if remasters get tiresome to people who've played a lot of games. I'm sure if you're somebody who plays whole series and all the flagships every generation the idea of playing those same games again generation isn't very interesting. But I know I definitely like good remasters. I've played a lot of great games this way.

I flip out over this. I understand video games were an experimental industry but Like, okay, maybe there was no respect for the art. Nobody thought video games had meaning or value so they didn't put any thought or effort in preserving them for that reason. I think this is insane but it's just a fact and I understand that this is the reality of the industry. But what I don't understand is how, from a cold and unfeeling business perspective, you put zero thought or effort in to protecting or preserving your own product. It doesn't make sense to me from an artistic business point of view. GAH. I AM MAD ON-LINE. I just get so mad. Thank God for the emulation scene. At the same time, though, better late than never. If companies with rich histories are able to turn up and properly preserve their own work after all these years I'm glad they've come to their senses. It's a good thing that they're doing and I'm glad they are. Imagine if they kept the original code for Secret of Mana before it had to be hacked down to fit a SNES cart.

Thread I think Smash Ultimate will be looked back on as one of the greatest games ever made
I enjoy Smash culture much more than Smash itself. I played Classic with everybody then put it down permanently. I love that Smash exists and I love talking about it and seeing it in all its glory but I just don't enjoy playing it like I used to. I do think this is the best Smash Bros. But I have a hard time as seeing it as any more than that.

Thread Pokémon from Pokémon Home can be transferred to Sword & Shield only if in Galar Pokédex
My reading is that, if you've been a lifelong Pokémon fan, you've been routinely disappointed one way or another by the series. Maybe they removed a feature you really liked, or maybe the series went in a direction you didn't prefer, but chances are even the most faithful fans have been disappointed by decisions Game Freak has made. But people overlook those disappointments because they love Pokémon. And maybe there are design decisions you don't like or features removed, but it's still Pokémon, and that was always enough to look beyond the things you didn't like and focus on the things you did. After all, people play Pokémon in so many different ways. Maybe the things that meant a lot to you just weren't popular enough to justify. If you were going to stick with the series, you needed to make peace with the fact you wouldn't always get everything you wanted. But this change is just so It has enormous implications for almost every single kind of player. You can't look past it and say "well, at least it's still Pokémon" because this time the fundamental Pokémon experience, something you took for granted, the thing that always kept you grounded despite the other changes, has been compromised. So no matter what you were disappointed with previously, and however you made peace with that, now almost every type of Pokémon fan is unanimously disappointed at once. In the past, when I was upset about a feature or a change, I just swallowed it and thought "it's not all about me." But this time, for once, it's about everybody. So everyone's just letting it out.

Thread Pokémon from Pokêmon Home can be transferred to Sword & Shield only if in Galar Pokédex
What it really kills are breeders. I am a breeder. I have spent thousands of hours picking Pokémon I like with unique movesets or shinies. I breed them, then train them to competitive standards, and sort them in to my huge collection. This is my favorite part of the series. Often I will browse for a new Pokémon to breed just based on how interesting its moveset is regardless of whether or not it's good. Strength Sap Vileplume. Belly Drum Slurpuff. Infestation Weezing. Guts+Facade Ursaring. Quiver Dance Venomoth. Full-coverage Silvally. I love these Pokémon because they are fun to battle with and have really unique implementations. These are the Pokémon I connect most with, and spend the most time using, and always really look forward to using. These are my Pokémon and why I play the series. I am all for gating the campaign and limiting the Pokémon you are intended to use during that experience. I actually strongly favor this. I often think there are too many Pokémon in the base game, and too many familiar faces, and having to work with what's available to you is rarely required. I'd say 250 Pokémon in any regional Dex is a sweetspot I'd prefer. If Pokémon is meant to be a proper RPG with a difficulty curve and a challenge there needs to be carefully curated availability and creatures only intended to appear or be available at specific points. So I am all for saying that you can't just use anything you want until you finish the story. But If I can't breed and play with the Pokémon that uniquely interest me at that point I have no reason to keep playing. It also hugely undervalues all the work I've done over the last decade. It's just awful for me.

I have grown a lot with the people here. I am who I am, in part, because of all of you. I would take the worst days here over the best days anywhere else because, no matter what, I believe we will always try to be better. We must continue to work together to create a community that serves the ideals we were founded on. This is a group effort. We all have to live up to our own expectations and believe that we, together, are what make this experience meaningful. This is a challenge we should always rise to. This is a journey that should never end. There is no place else like us, and nowhere else that tries, but we are here and we try and that counts. We must love each other. We are all we have. Thread Pokémon from Pokêmon Home can be transferred to Sword & Shield only if in Galar Pokédex
I’ve been a Pokémon fan my whole life. I’ve lived through periods where major parts of the PokéDex were inaccessible and this was always fine. I looked forward to the opportunity to use them when they finally become available it was a very welcome return. HOWEVER, not available is one thing. Not is another. There has never been a time where Pokémon weren’t present in the game data. So even if you had to wait for Kanto remakes to get many of those Pokémon, you could transfer them between your games and forward to new ones and have that reunion you looked forward to I have hundreds of Pokémon that I have bred, leveled, and trained. Multiple generations of major labor and investment in the series. The idea that the buck just stops and there’s nothing I can do to use them is unprecedented. I can’t believe they would lock Pokémon out of the game like that. I’m not so foolish to believe there will never be full-availability again in the future. But this feels like a betrayal for sure. I’m really let down by this news. I don’t understand it and I don’t think it makes the series better. If they wanted to limit the Pokémon you could use they should have done what they always did and not enabled transfers until a certain amount of time has passed. A permanent lock out is just... really upsetting. Terrible news.

Thread Who do you think was a thing at the end of The Thing?
Staying strictly within the confines of the original film, and not taking in to account any additional material or paratext, this is how I've always felt: 1) Speculating on how clever The Thing be and all the different things it do to convince its threats is fun but not textually valid. It's inherently speculating on things that aren't depicted and don't happen and while they happen in any infinite possible different universes there is nothing in the movie to suggest that. 2) Speculating on how clever MacReady may be is no different. Stuff like "maybe the bottle at the end had gasoline in it" isn't really intelligent insight, I don't think. That doesn't mean it's not fun to do (this channel actually understands this quite well and I enjoy them for that reason), but I just don't think it's smart speculation. 3) I am inclined to lean on the cinematographer's "eyeshine" as a strong indication of who is or isn't The Thing because this is a deliberately professed storytelling tool. We have the "word of God" on that. However, you always have to be careful with this. Just because something was intended doesn't mean a movie can't have continuity errors or mistakes. So, for me, the most important thing (ha) here isn't really figuring out the puzzle so much as how the ending relates directly to the movie's theme of paranoia. I think there are meaningful decisions made in how the final scene is portrayed to make you think Childs is The Thing. The fact he drinks from the bottle, the musical queue when he does so, the fact MacReady laughs, and the lack of the eyeshine, all suggest that Childs be The Thing. But you don't know. You can't know. At most you can suspect. That distrust and paranoia is what the movie is really about. So ultimately whether Childs is The Thing or not isn't what matters - it's that you think he could be and so does MacReady. That's the full depth of the ending. Not about giving you an answer, but not giving you one. That said, my current interpretation of the ending is the ending is that neither are The Thing.

Thread Don't Assume Their Gender! hahaha
As others have mentioned, it's outright transphobia from people who think it's funny to punch down. It's also a codified and certified Right Wing Joke™ that morons like Ben Shapiro, who are dumb as rocks, think are clever. A big reason people tell jokes is to feel superior. Getting a laugh at somebody else's expense is an innately uplifting feeling for some people because it lifts them up and puts somebody else down. It's automatic and compulsory. Put someone else down, get a laugh, feel good about it. Rinse and repeat. This was basically the entire backbone for comedy in the 80s. I've found an effective way to break that cycle is simply to tell them it's not funny. Nothing puts somebody on autopilot in a panic more than a stern and flat "that's not funny." Suddenly they are in a position they were unprepared for where somebody didn't automatically laugh at their automatic joke. They must either explain why they think it's funny - thus confirming their bigotry - or they shut up in embarrassment for fear of being confirmed as bigoted. Sometimes people just try to play it off with something like "oh, boo, you're no fun." But that just gives you another opportunity to tell them it's not funny and should feel bad. Unfortunately it only works in real life.

I am certain that at some point in my life I will faint while giving blood. I feel no such response in video games. I do with live-action movies, however. I am a big eye-coverer. I am a lifelong Pokémon fan who still enjoys the series very much, but the initial Game Boy games remain my favorite period in the series. It is my favorite time for the art, tone, and general aesthetic of the brand. Pokémon took shape over time, and I enjoy what the series has become, but Gen I and II were truly an era of monsters. I have a very precious collection of 1st Edition trading cards. I own Base through Gym Challenge and the full range of promotional cards printed by WotC. I also have doubles of the promos in their sealed distribution packaging. It took me 8 years from when I started collecting again to finish this collection. The only thing that stops me from getting the Generation II Neo sets is unfortunately the enormous cost. I’ve been priced out of the hobby, so I am very grateful I was able to finish the sets. They are my prized possession.

Pokémon really needs to go the FromSoft route where there is nothing stopping you from getting out there and going on your own but the world itself is extremely dense and rich with lore and mythology. Let me find NPCs, don't have the camera stop and they walk up to me from nowhere. I have fond memories of the burned lab on Cinnabar for this reason. Nobody walks up to you and explains everything to you. You have to uncover it. Pokémon, in my opinion, is in desperate need of the return of mystery. I haven't felt it really had any since Gen IV.
