Thread Prey and Dishonored 2 from Arkane Studios. Which one do you think is better ?
Really hard to choose, these two are among my favorite games released in the last five years or so. They of course share a few similarities, but are so different too, so its hard to compare. I love the way Talos I is built in Prey, the game is like open-ended 3D Metroidvania where you can choose how to progress, still imbuing all the immersive sim tropes you'd expect A few of Dishonored 2's levels are the most incredible designed missions I ever played on a game. Both also have the best skill trees of the last gen, none of that 3-way bs most games have, instead carrying meaningful abilities and character buffs. They also have unremarkable main narratives despite carrying so much great writing in their side stuff. yeah, its hard to choose but I will go for Prey for its originality, especially comparing it to most AAA games released last gen.

its pretty cool, love the main game mechanics and playing mudrunner this year made me appreciate the simulation genre more as a whole but I do think that Death Stranding is too stretched. Thread Favorite dev at the beginning of the decade vs. NOW
it changed quite a bit for me From 2000-2009 it was Rockstar. I loved GTA 3, VC, SA, IV, and their other stuff too. Valve was probably second because of Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Left 4 Dead and Portal. Third was Japan Studio, mostly due to ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, though Patapon, LocoRoco and the Ape Escape games were cool too. From 2010-2019 its probably Naughty Dog. The three Uncharted games released in this period are amazing, and The Last of Us is a top 3 of all-time for me. Arkane comes as a close second though, the Dishonored titles are incredible and Prey was also a delight. They made me fall deeply in love with immersive sims this decade. Rounding the top 3 are either Remedy or Insomniac

''RUMOR'' followed by ''Confirmation'' sure is a funny way to phrase a title lol. Also, we got to differentiate rumor from speculation. Doesnt sound right. They mention its was the primary budget, maybe its just the budget for one of the stretches of development Its would be far more beliavable if this amount covered marketing budget or something like that.no way, this was a decent sized team. Not huge, but games made by medium-sized devs havent cost this little in a looooong time game sold 2M copies in less than an year, if the budget was this low it would have be considered a massive success

they've been expanding and partnering with more and more external developers too, they don't seem to portray that as an issue right now One of the reasons WB got more into games in the 2000's and 2010's was to explore their IP themselves, that's the exact opposite of what Disney and their subsidiaries did, that's why I don't see it.

Thread ResetEra Games of the Year 2019 - Voting Thread (READ THE OP) [Ends Jan 26th 8:59am EST]
1. - Control is my favorite game of the year. Yes, the game has technical issues (and it had more at launch) but that didnt take a lot away from my experience. I was enthralled by the weird fiction world Remedy built for this game. 2. - Sekiro is the best game of the year. Its the first time I jump in a From Software game at launch and it was so fun to chat with friends about our challenges, strategies and favorite moments of the game while we were experiencing them. I was obsessed with its deep and thrilling combat system and the bigger focus on stealth and traversal is something that I was very pleased with. From is clearly one of the most talented studios out there 3. - The RCPD portion of Resident Evil 2 is my favorite chunk of any game this year. Its masterfully designed to be explored and re-explored many times. I just love not knowing a place to then 10 hours later, after feeling so overwhelmed by the challenges, just dominating that space and knowing every crook and cranny of the building. Its a shame that the next two areas arent on par (the lab is very mediocre), but still, Resident Evil 2 is an amazing game. 4. - Different from the original, but just, if not more impacful, Life Is Strange 2 proves that Dontnod bolsts one of the best writing teams in videogames. This time, the game is more a vision into some of the current issues our society is too coward to deal with it, and its great that in an age where many devs and publishers try to say their games are apolitical, Dontnod reminds us, in game, that everything is political. Its not only a great game, its a very important one. 5. - I was blown away by how smart and deep the puzzle design mentality goes in Baba Is You. Im sure the game is even more impressive than what I experienced, but Im too dumb to solve the later puzzles 6. - Kojima built a very special game, that could have been even better with some editing. Even more focus on the traversal mechanics and less bloated samey content is what I would have hoped to see during my 50h with Death Stranding. And while some of the writing is nonsensical and straigh up bad, there are some really strong moments in the surprisingly straightforward tale Kojima told here. 7. - This is basically a Minecraft where you have a compelling reason to build things with a combat that resembles 2D Zelda, but in a 3D enviroment. I just with they hadnt made the campaign a 30h tutorial to all the game’s mechanics. 8. - This is the best Gears made in terms of gameplay. The additions Coalition made to its already great base set of mechanics made the game have more tactical depth and variety in its combat. And while I was not a fan of the story beats and more open levels of the first half of the game, I think they managed to bring the story back up in the second half, and going to great heights by the end, and at least make a more interesting open-level in the second try too. 9. - I started loving The Outer Worlds from the jump, but as I played more of it, I actually liked less and less. That’s because while the writing and characters maintain great troughout, the worlds and gameplay just arent that interesting and deep so the more I played, the more I became tired of doing basically the same thing. 10. Untitled Goose Game - HONK!

Im very curious about what first-party games will be there day-one too, but Im not anticipating anything huge really. Just looking back at their home console launches, the first-party games released alongside the consoles hardly matter in the long run. Just look at the games available with the PS4 for example, only one that would probably make a top 20 best SIE games of the gen is Resogun, the game with the least exposure and scope in that launch too But differently from the PS4, we should be getting big games way sooner this time, which is very exciting.

For quartelry reports for example, they usually disclose sold-through only few days after together with the transcript of the Q&A. Not sure if TPC reports the same way tho. I hope they double down on dynamic aspects and soften heavy cinematic focus on a Days Gone sequel. The best parts of the game are facing hordes, clearing marauders camps your own way, and watching the many dangerous enemies clash not only with you but with themselves. While some of the most tedious aspects are related to how they approached cinematic storytelling. The cutscenes were weirdly ''glued'' together and those flashback segments were so poor. Same for the forced stealth missions. And overall the game is bloated, it feels like there is two seasons of a 24 episode network tv show inside this game. I think overall the story was fine (crazy predictable tho) and they have great support characters, but I'd much rather have a Days Gone that focuses on its strenghts and leaves behind the weakest parts instead of trying to fix them.

For a while Allgeier was Insomniac's overall Design Director on both Resistance and R&C, but still he managed to be the creative director on the Ratchet games. This role of Director of Experience seems to be similar to his Design Director position, where he oversaw some aspects of all projects in the studio, even if he was leading his own. I also recently noticed that Brian Horton (Rise of the Tomb Raider Game Director) who joined Insomniac as their new Design Director in January 2018, has changed his role to Creative Director since May 2018. yeah, PR in Brazil said the embargo lifts today. Weird, I wonder if there was some confusion on Sony/PR side of things Just watched Nautilus review that says it took them around 6h to get to the end of the game. Biggest criticism was toward the combat which they describe as very barebones. But they were glad it was something intoduced much later in the game, so it didnt bother that much. Overall they recommended, citing the exploration and puzzle approach to the whole thing, the monsters companionship, story (though they said the theme of loneliness has been worked better and with more subtlety on other games) and visuals as positive aspects.

Thread Control's Weapon and Personal Mod System was unnecessary
I barely changed guns as well, I went Grip with some basic damage mods for like 80% of the game Still, it isnt a factor that would make me detract points from my experienceyeah, and this is likely a bigger issue for developers than for us. Of course I'm not going to speak on behalf of anyone here, but it feels from an outside perspective that they are putting hard work on making and balancing these systems pretty much because these are videogamey things a portion of the market expects I guess there are games that have these elements in much smaller ways that feel more objective and meaningful. Gears 5 has ultimate abilities upgrades, and you get those for tackling side missions and exploring the enviroments. They really change the nature of these abilities and come through enjoyable and straightforward game content. I feel like Horizon with it's limited numbers of armor sets, that are very clear and objective with it's perks (one is better for stealth, one reduces fire damage, one has a shielding ability, etc) handles that aspect much better then God of War for example (though HZD also has an absurd amount of these mods) this is definitley something that became a ''rule'' this gen, so maybe with the market moving forward to new systems, they can leave this behind

I agree that is kinda unnecessary, very much like the loot system in God of War or most of these three-way skill trees in almost every game these days But I dont feel like they necessarily hurt the games for the most part. Thread Polygon: Spending 60 dollars on a game doesn’t make sense anymore
You know, as a consumer, I only got praise for Game Pass, is by far the best new ''thing'' to happen this gen. And we are already seeing that kind of praise for Apple Arcade too But I heard anecdotally from some dev friends that don't have games on the service, that their sales on XB1 have been hurt dramatically since Game Pass became a thing. To them, the perception of a portion of the public seems to be exactly that, one where games are not really worth buying anymore and not only they aren't buying as many games, but they don't even go on the store as often, so discoverability is also hurt in this process. So yeah, right now we are happy, and devs that have games on services like this are really happy too from what we hear, but there are some folks worried about it as well. I thought it was interesting to hear that kind of perspective, especially since I've been someone who's been shouting my love for the service as much as I can. One take I heard too is that if we get more and more services like this, it could even things out a bit because there will be more platforms trying to acquire content and it will give better leverage from the devs side on making deals too, so there's people from the outside that are somewhat encouraged by the model as well.

well, it depends. Assuming that they will indeed ship a big game like many are expecting, they will need to staff up. Finding talent in quality and quantity is one of the hardest aspects of development, and if your team is too much of a secret that can make things even more difficult. That's why we usually hear studio news around events like GDC because they usually have recruiters there in order to find talent If they reveal it kinda far from launch (24+ months away) sure, I can see a studio reveal alongside the game, that could even help the recruiting process. But if they want to reveal a game much closer to launch, which is something Sony has said they would rather do moving forward, I can see them revealing this team earlier than that

I have to say that the story was kinda underwhelming for me. And I say that as someone who really enjoyed what they did with the narrative in 4 First, the whole setup of making JD become a jerk and then show up out of nowhere to give him a redemption arc felt really rushed. Same for Fahz. They tried to develop more all of the characters, but I don't feel like they did as much the game would want you to believe it did. Second, while I love the focus on Kait and Del, the best characters from 4, the first two arcs are pretty much wasted plot-wise. They keep talking about chasing answers, but it's not a mystery at all, they alluded so much of Kait and her mother being descendants of Myrrah in the previous game that it was so obvious that this would be the case. There was no surprise or twist there but they spent half of the game trying to make you believe there was. I guess learning a new motivation for Myrra hatred towards the Seran's was interesting though. I do have to admit that the choice in Arc IV was pretty surprising and bold, I wonder how they'll treat that going forward. Overall the writing isn't weak, its actually pretty good as the quips and dialogs between the characters are great, but it doesn't feel like the story progressed much, it barely moved the needle for a 12-15 hour journey

Thread CONTROL Spoiler Thread
So I posted this on the OT, but since it is spoiler sensitive, this is a better place for it. Ever since they started addressing Dylan as P6 and later Jesse as P7, I've been thinking why Remedy choose these titles for them, and I have a theory. In the game, Dylan (P6) was brought into the FBC because his abilities were very promising, so much promising that they were trying to train him to become the new director. But we find out that it didn't work, as Dylan wasn't really fit for the job. Then we discover that the next one they were hoping to pursue for that position, was Jesse (P7) and she does indeed become the new director excelling at her job. For those who don't know, P# is also how Remedy name's their projects. Control is P7, and I believe Quantum Break was P6. So, P6 was a candidate they had a lot of faith and put and a bunch of resources into but didn't really pay off how they were hoping, so they moved on (like Quantum Break) while P7 is the candidate that was successful as their future director (like they hope Control will lead Remedy's new future direction). I think that's the analogy they are making here Also, another fun fact is that the actor that portrays Dylan, Sean Durrie, was initially cast as Jack Joyce, Quantum Break's main character (the first demos we ever saw were with him on the role) before the role was recast and Shawn Ashmore took it. Like I said on the other thread, I would love to see Remedy themselves comment on this, but they might never do that.

I'm about 5 hours in, and while it is definitely a Metroidvania, I must say it doesn't feel as interconnected or as well designed as Prey (but I don't think any other 3D Metroidvania is) Not as much room for improvisation on approaching scenarios too, but It's not really what is going for either. Maybe an even better comparison to the design is that is something between Prey and Arkham Asylum.

Probably best to clarify this before it gets any notoriety again. This trademark has nothing to do with Sony, it belongs to Vodafone. TLOU is legit one of the best designed games of its era, with plenty of option for different approaches in its big and multi-leveled areas, and the stealth-action gameplay is still one of my favorite set of mechanics in any game since. The one area where I'd agree that the game is somewhat mediocre is the enemy AI, something that ND has showed improvement over the years in its more recent projects.

I have that feeling too They hadnt picked a publisher last we heard (and Ueda has said they got multiple offers right after TLG shipped), but did take money from the Kowloon Nights fund for the initial stages of development. Kowloon's model is that they offer funding, but not publishing, so the devs can either publish themselves or still arrange publishing deals outside of this relationship (but ones where they have more leverage since they already got some funding figured it out). They will choose other partner(s) after development picks up in order to ship it, but this kind of move doesnt match with the traditional way SIE publishes titles, by fully funding and owning the products they publish.
