Bayo 3 in 2019 would be neat if it happened. But I still feel like Platinum might have another game up their sleeves for Switch. Platinum publicly told reporters earlier this year that they were developing multiple new ips. And this is a company who developed\co-developed 3 Nintendo published Wii U projects (w101, bayo 2, Star Fox zero). The relationship between Nintendo and Platinum goes beyond Bayonetta.

Thread So now that it's mostly done, what did you think of the Switch's 2018 lineup?
It was good year for third party titles: Octopath Traveler, Diablo 3, Dragonball Fighter Z, Crash Bandicoot, South Park, Wolfenstein 2, Fortnite, Civilization 6, City Skylines, Monster Hunter Generations. ... but it was a mostly boring year for first party until Smash Bros/Pokemon came along. The problem is those titles came extremely late in the year. The first half of the year relied way too heavily on Labo and Wii U ports.

Thread Switch has seen a year of drought despite the unified development team. Why?
In my opinion, the issue is pacing more than anything else. I warned about this . I said Nintendo's strategy for 2018 was to rely on third party stuff + ports of Nintendo games. And then they were going to unleash a ton of games in 2019. People are overestimating how much 3DS development has impacted Switch development. The vast majority of recent 3DS releases are either ports or remakes of older games: Kirby Extra Epic Yarn, Luigi's Mansion 1 remake, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. These aren't 3DS titles that require significant resources. Assuming nothing gets delayed, 2019's Switch lineup is shaping up to be just as strong as 2017 (if not stronger). As a side note, yes, there's more Wii U ports coming in 2019 lol.

Even if Microsoft didn't play ball, it wouldn't be that difficult to find third party titles to fill up an N64 Classic. Konomi has Castlevania 64, Bomberman 64, Mystical Ninja, and Hybrid Heaven. Ubisoft has Rayman 2 and Rocket: Robot on Wheels. Koei Tecmo has Winback. Capcom has Resident Evil 2 and Mega Man 64. Square Enix has Ogre Battle 64 Namco has Ridge Racer 64 There's also stuff like Harvest Moon 64, Chameleon Twist, Snowboard Kids, etc. With that said, I seriously doubt a hypothetical N64 Classic would have 30 games, but who really knows.

Thread DCEU Era |OT2| Rebirth not Reboot
Well since it's a gritty crime drama - and not a superhero action flick - it'll have a much smaller budget ($30-$50 million) than your typical cgi-heavy comic book film. It also helps that The Joker is arguably the most famous comic book villain of all time. Ultimately, this film is not a business risk for Warner Bros - it will be pure profit for them. Also, Warner Bros must have a lot of confidence in the screenplay. It helps that ("8 Mile", "The Fighter") co-wrote the screenplay with Todd Phillips. The Fighter has a 90% on Rottentomatoes, and it was nominated for Best Original Screenplay. 8 Mile was another critically acclaimed movie written by Silver, with a certified fresh rating of 76% on Rottentomatoes.

One thing that makes me optimistic about this movie: Scott Silver's involvement in co-writing the screenplay. If you look at the last three movies that Silver wrote/co-wrote screenplays for, they all ended up with "Fresh" ratings on Rottentomatoes. (2016) - Rottentomatoes: 64% (2010) - Rottentomatoes: 90% (nominated by the Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay) (2002) - Rottentomatoes: 76% So when Joaquin Phoenix or Marc Maron say that the script is good, I can honestly believe it.

Thread Announcement: Forum restructuring scheduled for this Sunday night
Hello everyone! Today we'd like to announce an upcoming adjustment to the layout of ResetEra, specifically the liberation of the EtcetEra Hangouts and the creation of a new Entertainment section. We know this might sound scary. Change always is. However, after speaking with and polling prominent community members and thread creators from over 30 of the largest EtcetEra Hangouts, we believe that this step is necessary to ensure the long term health and growth of these communities. The change will end stagnation, encourage more activity on more topics, and give the community room to expand. The backbone of ResetEra since day one has been the wide variety of communities that chose to sign up together. We've always believed that when the Hangouts of ResetEra are thriving, the ResetEra community as a whole is thriving. Since launch we've put a lot of work into a number of initiatives to promote the Hangouts, including the Community Spotlights, Community OT Lists, and the ResetEra newsletter. Nevertheless, it's become a common sentiment that This illustrates a simple truth and a core problem with the status quo: The EtcetEra Hangout section is less active and gets less attention than any other part of the site. With the rise of Discord and WhatsApp it's become increasingly hard for threads there to maintain interest, let alone grow it. EtcetEra Hangouts currently hosts 380 threads in total. By comparison, there are 699 threads in Video Game Hangouts. That makes EtcetEra Hangouts a mere 54% the size of Video Game Hangouts. While we're aware the Video Game Hangouts face some of the same challenges, the data makes it clear that it is the EtcetEra side which is in dire straits and needs immediate relief. Out of 380 total threads in EtcetEra Hangouts, 107 threads (28%) are locked. Out of 380 total threads in Etcetera Hangouts, 92 threads (24%) have less than 100 posts. This means that of the 380 aforementioned threads, only 181 of them have ever been in good health at any point. Furthermore, many EtcetEra Hangouts threads that were active when the site was young have started to fizzle out. If left untouched, the current structure will result in the slow withering and death of the remaining threads. First things first, we are getting rid of EtcetEra Hangouts entirely. However, if we were to simply merge the whole sub-forum with the existing EtcetEra main section, many of these communities would be buried and lost forever. In order to make sure that there will be enough space to give these threads a fighting chance, we will also be creating an entirely new top level forum section called "Entertainment." This new Entertainment section will absorb all threads (including former Hangouts) for topics such as: The revamped EtcetEra section will be home to threads (including former Hangouts) for everything else, including: The following existing Hangouts will be part of the new board: The following existing Hangouts will be part of the revamped board: It is important to note that there will not be a Hangouts sub-forum for the Entertainment or EtcetEra sections. Community OTs will not be relegated to their own space; they will be side by side with other threads on a top level forum section. Based on our data, seen below, we estimate that there should be a fairly even split of EtcetEra Hangouts communities destined for both Entertainment and EtcetEra. We expect that this change will help rejuvenate old threads and provide broader opportunities for new ones. This Sunday at 7PM PST / 10 PM EST ResetEra will be closed for maintenance. During this time the Entertainment section will be created. Every thread in Etcetera Hangouts will be moved to either Entertainment or the main EtcetEra board. We will also move as many entertainment threads as we can from the current EtcetEra section to the new dedicated Entertainment section. This maintenance may last for up to five hours. We are expecting that it will take a little time for everyone to adjust to this change, but we've adjusted to bigger changes before. Site staff will be diligent in moving any threads accidentally created in the wrong sub-forum. There will be a community thread list for each section stickied at the top of EtcetEra and Entertainment shortly after the maintenance so that people can easily find community threads. Additionally and crucially, the existing Community Spotlights for EtcetEra will be split into spotlights for both Entertainment and EtcetEra, doubling the amount of non-Video Game spotlights and providing a further boost to these threads.

Thread Announcement: Forum restructuring scheduled for this Sunday night
We know that our members are passionate about political and social issues. As long as the threads are relevant, you can talk about them on all 3 boards (Video Games, Entertainment, EtcetEra). In the #MeToo era, many of the serious threads in the existing EtcetEra are related to entertainment, sports, and celebrities. A change to the structure will not affect much in terms of the visibility of serious stories, and an Entertainment board will still encompass plenty of serious topics. Past Examples of serious entertainment-related stories include: All of these stories would have been appropriate to post in the upcoming Entertainment section. While we have nothing specific to announce right now, we are investigating technological solutions for this and other preferences, to be incorporated into our 2.0 site redesign due later this year. In addition to offering communities a much needed shot in the arm, we expect that a lot of topics that were previously crowded out by Entertainment will have a chance to flourish after being given the extra space. As far as we can tell the community has outgrown the "two main section" structure and there are all kinds of hobbies, interests, and jokes that no longer get enough oxygen. This is a chance to give them new life. No, old OTs will not be deleted. These locked OTs will be moved like all other threads to the appropriate section of the forums. There will be no change to the Video Games section or the Video Game Hangouts. No, we have no intention of imposing any new changes or restrictions to this. Communities are still free to refresh their threads either by time or by post count, as they've been doing all along. There may be cases when a news item can intersect multiple categories and be placed in either. If the news is big enough, we will sometimes allow multiple threads on the same story, each for a different section. In general, however, we prefer to stick to a single thread for a single topic and go with the category that seems like the best fit.

Thread Banjo Kazooie in Super Smash Bros Switch, is it actually realistic?
Do I believe Banjo-Kazooie will join the Smash Bros roster? No, it's very unlikely. It's not impossible, but it's not likely either. But there is (surprisingly) a lot of N64 nostalgia happening right now, and adding Banjo-Kazooie as future DLC would be a smart way to capitalize on that N64 nostalgia. Not only did Banjo have two N64 games, but he was a playable character in Diddy Kong Racing. Year-after-year, vintage game retailers are saying that . Not the NES or SNES or anything Sega.

Thread Banjo Kazooie in Super Smash Bros Switch, is it actually realistic?
I wouldn't say the Banjo IP is over. Microsoft is still actively promoting the Banjo-Kazooie IP with things like Minecraft DLC. Microsoft could very easily do what they did with "Killer Instinct". By giving the "Perfect Dark" and "Banjo-Kazooie" IPs to other studios to tackle (aka, studios not named Rare). The truth is, most semi-popular IPs don't stay dead forever. They just go into a temporary hibernation until publishers can figure out what to do with them. I mean, last year gave us a new Bubsy game, of all things! This year, we're getting a new Toe Jam and Earl game and an HD remake of Fear Effect. We also have Sony creating a remaster of MediEvil. People said Metroid is dead. Nintendo announces Metroid Prime 4 and Metroid Samus Returns. People said Mega Man is dead. Capcom announces Mega Man 11. People said Crash Bandicoot is irrelevant. Last year, Crash Bandicoot N's Sane Trilogy shattered sales records. People said Bomberman is irrelevant. Last year, Super Bomberman R became the best selling game in the series history. And, with the recent Netflix show, I think Castlevania will make a big comeback too.

Well, I don't think it's completely unrealistic. Cloud never appeared on a Nintendo system before, but he still made an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Under certain conditions, I think a Banjo-Kazooie appearance benefits both companies. Microsoft gets free marketing for one of their IPs. And Nintendo's fans will be happy to see Banjo make a return appearance on a Nintendo system.

- All of Season 1, and the first half of Season 2, are the best comic book television that I've ever seen. As far as I'm concerned, Wilson Fisk (Kingpin) is still one of the best villains seen in any of Marvel's films and TV shows. - Gotham is fun to watch because it's a live-action cartoon. Imagine if Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock entered Toontown in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". That's what Gotham is. Yes, it's violent and bloody, but it can also be a very funny show at times. Unlike most shows airing on The CW, Gotham actually the cheesiness, campiness, and wackiness of its comic book source material. - This is one of the weirder, trippier, comic book shows on television. It's also one of the most inventive and unpredictable comic book shows currently airing. - The quality of Season 1 surprised me. It's fun escapism like most comic book shows, but it also deals with serious topics such as racism, police brutality, and parenting. In contrast to other CW shows, I like how Black Lightning features a much older protagonist. Let's hope The CW can maintain the show's quality. I would hate to see this suffer the same fate as "The Flash" (which had 1 great season + 3 mediocre ones). - The most appealing aspects of this show are the cast and humor. As a whole, the show feels like a unique mix of Veronica Mars and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

And for the most part, many critics seem to agree that it's a solid game: - 9.0 out of 10 - 9.0 out of 10 - 9.0 out of 10 - 9.0 out of 10 - 9.0 out of 10 - 8.5 out of 10 - 8.0 out of 10 - 8 out of 10 - 8 out of 10 - 8 out of 10 - 8 out of 10 - Highly Recommended - Loved it.

Thread Nintendo Switch currently sitting at 928 games across all regions - 540 released in 2018 thus far
When I think Shovelware, I typically think of Wii games like "Imagine: Party Babyz" and "My Horse and Me". Or something like "Meme Run" on the Wii U. The idea that something is "shovelware" just because it's "indie", "2D" or "low-budget" is a terrible attitude to have. Realistically, the vast majority of indie games coming to Switch are older ports of PS4/XB1/VITA games like Crypt of the Necromancer, Night in the Woods, Cosmic Star Heroine, Undertale, Hyper Light Drifter, etc.

Western animation is generally defined as animation produced outside of Asia and catered to western audiences. A western animated show might be animated in Asian countries, but the show's writers, creators, voice actors and target audience are still located in the west. Many western animated shows and movies don't have threads dedicated to them. Need a place to talk about King of the Hill, Gravity Falls, Regular Show, Futurama, or Batman: The Animated Series? Totally agree. I'll admit, I'm a little confused by the Breaking Bad cameo complaints in this thread. I don't see how you can create a proper prequel about Saul Goodman without explaining how he met Francesca, Huell and Patrick. You definitely can't do a Saul Goodman prequel show without explaining how Mike Ehrmantraut became one of Saul's most trusted hired goons. And you can't tell a prequel story about Mike without explaining his business relationship with Gus and Lydia. The stories of Saul and Mike are pretty much linked together, in my opinion. Jesse explains to Walt early in their partnership in Breaking Bad. Which means Jesse knew about Saul Goodman's reputation long before he and Walt teamed up together. It's very possible that Jesse's friends like Badger, Combo, or Skinny Pete ran into Saul before the events of Breaking Bad.

Look at the schedule for the first half of the year. January - No Nintendo first party games. February - Bayonetta 1 and Bayonetta 2 (Wii U ports) + Dragon Quest Builders (Third party title) March April + South Park (Third party game) May - Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze (Wii U port) + Hyrule Warriors (Wii U port) June+ Wolfenstein II (third party) July - Captain Toad (Wii U port) + Octopath Traveler (third party) + Crash Bandicoot (third party) I'm sure the second half of 2018 will be a lot better than the first half. Thanks to Smash Bros, Pokemon, and Fire Emblem. Maybe we'll even get Yoshi this year. But let's not fool ourselves. The first half of the year was relying on Nintendo ports + third party games.

I remain somewhat optimistic that Gotham might survive for one more season. The producers said Season 5 will be a reboot of the show. (Not that there was anything wrong with Season 4 -- quality wise, it's one of Gotham's best seasons) Also, Season 5 would let the producers wrap the show up with Bruce finally becoming Batman and Gordon becoming commissioner.

Well, if what I've heard is true...and that's a very big IF... Your "happiness" would ultimately depend on two things. 1. Whether you're a fan of this particular Nintendo IP. 2. Whether you're a fan of this genre. That's why I said I don't know how the internet will react. You can be a huge fan of the IP, but you may dislike the genre. Or it could be the opposite: you can be a BIG fan of this game's genre, but you were never a fan of the IP. Again, that's assuming there's even a smidgen of truth to what I've heard. I don't plan to elaborate much more on this, but I hope I answered your question.

Nintendo's plate seems kind of full this holiday season with Fire Emblem, Smash Bros, and possibly Pokemon. Unless one of those three gets pushed back into 2019, I'm not sure where Retro's project would even fit. And then you have wild cards like - we still don't know when Yoshi is releasing. I'm currently on Team 2019 for Retro's game, but maybe they'll surprise me. Also, if Retro's project is what I think it is, then I have no idea how the internet will react to it.

If I had to speculate, I could see Retro's game being both a new IP and an existing Nintendo IP. Sort of like how Mario + Rabbids is a brand new IP (strategy RPG) based on existing IPs (Mario, Rabbids). I guess something like a "spinoff"? An old IP in a completely new/different genre.

Today someone asked me if Nintendo dropped the ball with 2018. Honestly, I don't think so. It's true that this year (especially the first half of the year) is heavily reliant on third parties + remasters/ports of older Nintendo titles. But I think Nintendo will "redeem" itself during the last 4 months of the year. , , and would be, in my opinion, a great holiday lineup. As long as none of those games get pushed into 2019.

You summed it up perfectly. As much as fans praise Switch's Year 1, the system's library didn't start picking up momentum until around the summer. Very true. Also, not every Wii U owner has played every single Wii U game. I know plenty of Wii U owners who didn't play Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Wonderful 101, Pokken or Bayonetta 2. I always think back to when Naughty Dog conducted research that said

I would prefer if Nintendo took their time with Pikmin 4 and didn't rush it's development. I say this as someone who considers Pikmin 3 as one of the Top 5 best games on Wii U. Oh, I see. I somehow misinterpreted that sentence. My bad, . Yup, it's just a small 2D indie game so I don't want to overhype it. This will be the second game that I've worked on as a designer.

Yeah, I'm expecting Smash Bros to have a significant amount of new content. My expectations: New stages, new playable characters, possibly returning characters. Maybe we'll see some stages from the 3DS version recreated in HD. I don't think Smash Bros will be a straight simple port. They will probably position this as the "Ultimate version of Smash Bros". Anyways, we won't have to wait too long to hear about it. At the bare minimum, it will at least be around Mario Kart 8 Deluxe levels of new content. MK8 Deluxe was not exactly a slouch in the content department: All of the Wii U DLC + 7 brand new playable characters + Brand New Battle Mode + Eight Switch exclusive new battle tracks.

I'm pretty confident that this will not be a straight port, and there will be plenty of new content. Anyways, I wonder if this is a "Hyrule Warriors" situation where they combine the Wii U + 3DS content together in the Switch version.

It's true that Ehoavash has not provided evidence to the Admins that they are in fact in a position to know what they claim to know. Therefore, the admin team can not verify that they are telling the truth. However, based on what I know about this year, I have no reason to doubt . It lines up with what I've personally heard about this year's software lineup.

Since everyone is on the topic of Metroid Prime... Speculation: How would you feel if Nintendo released Metroid Prime Trilogy HD on Switch this year, and then released Metroid Prime 4 in 2019? Do you think that would be a smart idea? Do you like that idea? I bring this up because Sony released Uncharted Collection in 2015, and then they released Uncharted 4 in 2016.

After City Folk was released in 2008, it took Nintendo four years to release New Leaf (2012). And New Leaf didn't get released in the west until 2013. Also back in October, Nintendo released Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp -- which took over two years to develop -- and it was delayed several times due to development issues. There is no code red yet. But Nintendo is close to 20 million Switch consoles in fiscal 2018. That would bring the console's worldwide install base up to 37 million units. Having health sales + healthy catalog is fine, but that doesn't mean you should be blinded by success and grow complacent. They will need a big title in Holiday 2018 to keep momentum going.

It's true that a good chunk of Nintendo's big releases are coming in 2019. But I don't remember implying anything about Pokemon missing this year. Honestly, I don't know a lot about Pokemon. My impression right now is that Metroid Prime 4 and Animal Crossing are still very early in development.

Over the last 15 years, Nintendo created a lot of new IPs, but very few of them had universal appeal outside of Japan. For every 2-3 successes (Animal Crossing, Wii Sports, Splatoon) they've also released many new IPs that were commercial failures (Steel Diver, Wii Music, Odama, Cubivore, The Wonderful 101, Sing Party, Doshin the Giant, Chibi Robo, Geist, Devil's Third). Even Ever Oasis, which was released this year on 3DS, is a commercial flop. It feels like they didn't figure out the formula for a successful new IP (Strong multiplayer focus + appealing characters) until Splatoon and ARMS came along. Wii Sports also followed that formula (strong multiplayer + Miis were appealing characters).

Technically, you're right. But are they still big success stories like Splatoon and Animal Crossing? I'm not entirely sure about that. Both of those IPs took a huge hit (sales wise) during the 3DS era. Four months after 3DS launched, retailers were selling Nintendogs + Cats for $15-$20.

That sums it up pretty well. One thing I've noticed over the years is people really want Nintendo to have their own Naughty Dog. Basically, a studio that will make the type of western software that Nintendo would never make. And I noticed that some people get angry when Retro Studios doesn't try to be Naughty Dog or Bungie or (insert western company here).

I'd love another Wario platformer with a similar hand-drawn art style as Wario Land Shake It. But this time in glorious HD. Too many 2D platformers was definitely a problem for Wii U. But an even bigger problem was NSMBU and 3D World being so similar to NSMB2 and 3D Land. Sometimes Wii U felt like I was just playing HD expansions of 3DS titles.

To be fair, New Fang specifically said Donkey Kong 'Country'. 'Country' series = 2D Sidescrolling platformer. Mario Odyssey required creating an entire new engine from scratch. I don't see why a new DKC (2D Donkey Kong platformer) would need a new engine when they can simply re-use the existing engine from Tropical Freeze?

I wonder if 2018 will be "Year of the 2D Platformer" for Switch. Obviously, Yoshi and Kirby are coming in 2018. But there's a strong possibility of a Tropical Freeze port. Historically, every single DKC game has been ported to another system including DKC Returns and Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. There's also the possibility of 2D Mario in 2018. Perhaps something related to New Super Mario Bros or Super Mario Maker? This is just pure speculation on my part.

Personally, I would like to see Next Level Games take another stab at Luigi's Mansion. Luigi's Mansion is one of those IPs that would benefit tremendously from HD hardware. They could pull off some amazing lighting effects with an HD console. They could also create some cool HD rumble effects when catching ghosts.

No worries, NinjaCoachZ. As long as people are discussing topics that are relevant to the thread, then everything is perfectly fine. Being an admin doesn't mean that I am above criticism. I realize that I made mistakes with some of my reporting (and rumor mongering) in the past, and I sincerely apologize for it. I don't want anyone to feel like they're walking on eggshells whenever my name is mentioned. And for what it's worth, I left journalism one year ago to pursue a career in game development. Nice job on the thread, EAD Ninja.

Thread The Switch is quickly becoming a retro gamer's paradise.
At the very least, it seems like the lack of a Virtual Console service was a good thing for Neo Geo fans and SNK fans. The Wii Virtual Console had 54 Neo Geo games. Tomorrow, Switch will reach 75 Neo Geo games.
