Thread Is Resetera's search the worst ever or what?
The problem is it is sorted by creation date, not last update. XenForo for some wonky reason doesn't support 'last update' as a search criteria. The quick search aka search-as-you-type aka auto-complete uses a 'relevancy' like search rather than simple date sorting as otherwise the results are hilariously worse. This is because the algorithm it uses is designed to handle partial word fragments at the expense of accuracy. 'relevancy' means it can prune a pile of really really bad matches generated by aggressive word-fragment matching.Trying to use MySQL full-text search would crush the site given ResetEra's size. Era does use XF's Elastic Search/Lucene support with some tweaks which do help make it better, but sadly not by a huge amount. Search is hard.It would be hard to make an even less useful text fragment for search than "OT". Part of the issue is you can have word stemming or exact text matching. Not both.

Thread What's your thought on the new word counter?
The timer on how quickly the word-counter can update has been adjusted and some padding has been added. The software stack actually has that option (including a maximum word-count option), and the word-counter be accurate to how the backend counts words.Yeah, it is doing simple string concatenation rather than something smart to figure out what the phrase should be.The feature was adjusted from default off to default on, and I queried a few admin staff if anyone had a problem with this when the software update was rolled out. There are actually a fair number of small bugfix updates and minor feature tweaks which roll out without much notifications. The forum isn't a all-in-one javascript file, if that feature is disabled the entire javascript file just isn't loaded. The short delay before the word-count updates is a deliberate feature to reduce how much computation is required by simply do less work.

Thread End of Year Tech Update: Tickets, Thread Title Edits, Countdowns, More!
I've decreased the time the word-counter script waits before re-computing the word-count. It doesn't run immediately as otherwise it risks being a CPU hog. Fixing the "1 Words" thing needs some more work, we can change the phrase so it is "Word(s)" but 1 word posts aren't exactly super-common.Should be done. There are a bunch of places where the UI doesn't quite have as much padding or whitespace as it should, and are slowly being polished over time.

It is some javascript I've written as part of the software Resetera uses. The bb-code only mode integration was more complex than it should have been and why despite the majority of the feature existing for over a year it hadn't been "default on".

Changing the link structure is non-trivial, and requires a migration layer or killing old links. This isn't something we would do without a lot more consideration. The search auto-complete sacrifices accuracy for speed and finding even with fairly crazy miss-spellings and has a different algorithm to the full-search. It does consider age, and tries to match the full text but it is a little wonky with that (as it matches the reduced text, not exact). There are some potential future updates which may help tune the results a little to favor more popular/active content, and support exact text matching, but it isn't going to be early next year before that can start.Monitoring does look at page speed, but it is difficult to measure around the world as CloudFlare and ISP's often are having fun with the year 2020 and increased internet usage.

This is part of the site's security which limits how "different" the login IP and the access IP can be. A VPN's endpoint can potentially jump from one ISP to another, which can have very different IP address and thus not be permitted for the session.

An announcement is being drafted, with other parts of the feature set being tuned. While some people might like hot pink for thread tag colors, this probably isn't going to mesh well with the site. But it is the other site staff doing that, not me. I do back-end technical work which enables adding various features for the site. Putting together feature designs, over-seeing development, documenting and describing features for public consumption, is frankly not an easy task and is the sort of project management skillset which is not quick to pickup and even harder to hand over to a new set of people. And not something I do.The problem is the whole thread tag feature has no feature flags, there are flags around individual bits but there is no "off" button for what people are complaining about. For to actually remove the feature, it would require removal of data. Or hacking away at quite a few display templates. It is probably less work (and faster!) to fix the coloring to make them less obvious.

Twitter is frankly a horrible platform to try to integrate with. They love breaking sites & apps which pull or embed their content. There honestly isn't a heck of a lot we can do beyond make it render bare links. Which is horrible. This is a hard coded limit in the platform, and is very unlikely to be increased as due to some design choices can result in poor performance. There is an on-going support ticket on the platform (xenforo)'s official site, that has been on-off-again for the last year and a bit now. Try not to double tap enter is about all I can suggest :(One of the problems with having so many features, is sometimes one of them is enabled by default and it takes a little time for people to find the button to turn it off.The defaults are reasonable. Then you look at them on the dark theme and not so much. I believe others who fight with CSS are working on improvements.Yes. I've deployed a hostfix to change it to OR. While there was plans for a UI to expose and/or, that would take longer than a hotfix.Nothing prevents multiple tags with the same text, but merging those prefixes is doable. As for the buggy ignore tag feature, there is some multi-feature complexity there which is likely causing issues.

Should be disabled now.Clear browser cache, and do a full-restart of the browser. You may also have your ad-blocker blocking fonts, which will break formatting.Twitch changed how embeds work, I recently pushed an update to the embeds framework we use. Is it better now?By design, the thread reply banner isn't a post. It is part of the toolkit for moderators to use, and that is more of a policy question than technical.

Best to use the "" to send a message to the admins who would look at that sort of thing. There is a pending site update which will be tweaking some of the editor functionality which may help, but it is a bit of a dice role.Once you get above a few hundred, it starts only loading them in chunk of a hundred at a time. This allows it to scale well to multi-thousands of threadmarks per thread.Looks like we forgot to role that feature out (it requires additional tracking to be done to avoid duplicate alerts). I'll ping some admins and see about scheduling enabling that feature in.

FixedThe auto-complete search is different from the full search, it uses words-fragment to find threads which may match to support search-as-you-type. I've enabled the option for this type of search which boosts exact text matches up in the search results; but this means results are not ordered in date relevancy. A search update is being rolled out which fixes an issue which made the "search titles only" option not work as expected for the full search. This is a holdover from the initial setup of the site; the caching headers applied by cloudflare has been adjusted from 4 hours to 1 month. All dynamic content is pushed with no-cache headers (which CF respects), and all static-ish content gets slapped with version/cache buster strings so this is a safe change.Clear your browser cache, this happens sometimes where your browser caches broken javascript. Normally it is firefox managing it.

There have been some recent bugfix updates to the 'threadmark' functionality, hopefully it will work better. If you do have the next/previous buttons not working as expected, try using the "sort" interface to resort things. This will rebuild threadmark position information which the next/previous buttons use.It is a bit hit & miss when adding threadmarks between existing ones, especially if it gets the category wrong. I'll add that to the list of things to investigate when there is time.
