Thread FMV games are awesome. What are your favorites.
I kind of hate-love them. I played Phantasmagoria last year and thought it was abysmal but also thought it was a "needs to be seen" game that is wild. I loved playing it even though I thought it was garbage. I am so excited to play Phantasmagoria 2, just because I need more insanity like that. I've heard good things about Contradiction. I want to get more into the genre because ho boy.

Thread The Last of Us Part II - Spoiler Thread Part III
Just quoting this to highlight it. It's something I sort of love about being bilingual. This is exceptionally common in Japanese scripts for western media. Watching Wolf of Wall Street in theaters in Japan was a experience because of how off the subtitles were from the dialogue itself. The script had no way to properly translate or approach the swearing, so the scene where Margot Robbie and Dicaprio fight ("Don't fuckin throw that water on me!") was comically different. "Please honey, don't dump water on me!". This persisted through every single scene in the film due to the high amount of swearing and hostility. It's an interesting translation issue and one that comes up very frequently when bringing western media to Japanese audiences.

Thread Zenos yae Galvus (FFXIV) is a great villain. You’re all just mean.
literally just a weeby edgelord who listens to too much malice mizer summoning up the motivation to complete stormblood and get to shadowbringers was misery. I found it more annoying than vanilla ARR. I still haven't started Shadowbringers because of how exhausted I became going through Stormblood. I know Shadowbringers is good so I have high expectations, and I do intend to play it, but I really needed a break from the game for a bit first to get the taste out of my mouth. Honestly, I don't like any of the characters from Stormblood, especially the villains. I thought they were all one dimensional anime tropes plucked from source inspiration and just dropped into the game haphazardly.

Thread Anybody else feel happier when they play horror or post-apocalyptic games when they're feeling down?
I love playing stressful things when real life gets intense. It allows me to focus my stress into something and get lost in its superfluous, low-stakes decisionmaking. Like, replaying Pathologic and Pathologic 2 during COVID was incredible. An almost life-changing experience. I highly recommend it. I also watch a lot of extremely depressing arthouse indie horror and tragedy films when I am depressed or angry. Again. It channels it, and then I process it when I arrive at the film's catharsis., it's like a proxy.

Thread Elder Scrolls Online is my new decompression game.
ESO is a very nice comfort game. I am not good at it, I don't have high end gear or builds, but I do think it features some of the best writing (and performances) of any Elder Scrolls game. It is a perfect decompression game because it feels very much like its own little thing and it isn't super difficult so just going through it to absorb some lore is always a good time.

Steam link for me has worked a little bit less well than Nvidia Gamestream in-home, but yes, for the most part it's playable for games that aren't super twitch or action heavy. I played a lot of JRPGs and visual novels through it just fine. Now I use an Nvidia Shield Pro and a Razer Kishi + A spare Note 9 I had laying around as my portable in-home streaming solution and it is perfect. Wired makes a huge difference.

Thread Tell us about your most played game ever
I don't play any GAAS games or anything. My most played games in order are probably... Demon's Souls (500+ hours) Dark Souls (500+ hours) Dark Souls 2 (200+ hours) Dark Souls 3 (200+ hours) Bloodborne (500+ hours) Fallout: New Vegas (300+ Hours) Super Smash Bros Melee (1000+ Hours) There isn't much to say about why. They're all excellently designed games, some of the best ever made, with lots of replay-ability and variance in playstyles especially when going for repeat runs. No two run needs to look the same in any of these games. I suppose, if you count Rocksmith as a GAAS game, I am at like 100 hours in that too. But I don't really consider that on the same level nor really the same design as other GAAS stuff.

This is fascinating, and I would have loved to read it.This is also one of the more interesting takeaways, and I'm glad that Sarah got into it a bit in this video; very rarely do we have people really critically examining fandom history and rivalry in this way, and I think it gives a very interesting historical perspective of how the fandoms interacted and where people were at back then.

Favorite? It's hard to distill it down to one element but I really enjoy stamina and parry systems for combat, which have become more and more prevalent as third person action games get more and more popular, and people toy with the formula. Least favorite? Fucking minimaps and waypoints. Oh and fast travel. Fuck all that noise. We've had them for forever but I feel like they have reached peak design absurdity at this point.

This is a good call-out for the video and I appreciate you taking the time to articulate. It is an angle I would like to watch more content directly about. I still think the video is interesting as a critique of the predominantly male criticisms of twilight but I do agree that she gives Meyer a lot of charitable slack that was not necessarily earned. Still, it is an interesting companion piece to this video due to the fandom aspect, which I thought paired nicely with some of the points Sarah is making about how participation has changed over time. I also realize I may have come off like a twilight fan trying to rehab the view of twilight here - I am not, haha. I do not like Twilight one bit for, among others, the reasons you have stated.

I pay as much as I am hoping to get out of something. There is no point in buying something for 5 bucks that I'm going to need to buy 45 replacements for. It is too much hassle. Thread How do you feel about Qui-gon Jinn?
I think Qui Gon is fascinating because he's depicted as this maverick Jedi but I'm actuality is kind of a gigantic dick who is just really into the force like your crunchy uncle who drifted back into your life after living in a religious commune for a decade. You get for real vibes that the rest of the council (who are also, at the time of the prequels, kinda awful bureaucrats) doesn't like him much but has to put up with him because despite it all he seems to know what he is doing and trusts the force enough to pretty much consistently make it out okay. Except on Naboo, obviously. It's very interesting to see how the canon has attempted to work around Qui-Gon's place in the plot. He isn't a super well developed Jedi, and even in later properties starring him, most of which are great, there still is this vague sense that he is special for reasons that are either ill-defined or purposely left in the dark. All in all I think Qui-Gon is a really interesting character especially in the context of the Jedi, but I don't know if anything has really delivered on that because a lot of the time he sort of exists as a somewhat transparent plot device rather than a fully fledged character on his own. But that's fine -- he's most interesting when juxtaposed against other Jedi.

Thread Least aesthetically pleasing Final Fantasy outfit
I am fine with all of the FF9 designs. They all have very unique silhouettes and there is a lot of world detail and creative thematic inspiration coming out in all of them. It helps that the world is very heightened and fantastical, with an almost cel animated toon-like approach to art direction. Now, FF10 outfits? God, ew. It's bizarre that Kimahri is the most well dressed character in the entire game. FF10/10-2 as a whole are basically a gigantic death star laser beaming towards the entire concept of fashion. Thread X-Play and Attack of the Show return alongside G4 relaunch this summer
I think part of this is that the sort of talkabout hour long video essays you see on youtube are not the same tone nor production goal as something like a set-produced talk show with skits or what have you. I think back to how late-night TV talk shows were once stated as a major threat to Radio News (at the time), but eventually the two coexisted because of the difference in mode of presentation, the same way that Podcasts and Satellite radio exist across similar target audiences without directly competing. So far they seem to be running this operation in line with a "TV Network" approach as opposed to a more relaxed and leisurely video essay or youtube critique. There is a focus on on-location shots and sets as well, which are somewhat rare in the youtube space outside of very specific content creators and channels. So that, I think, is where the question of sustainability lies. Is there an audience or market for a more traditionally produced gaming network? I think so. I think certain things, like Kinda Funny games or Easy Allies have slowly leaned into over time, what with their news report desks and fully constructed set. But I don't think that G4 will need to compete with the various Grimbeards, MandaloreGamings, or SulMatuls of the world. They can coexist.

Thanks for the info! I'd never heard of Gus before but it's good to know his background. Sessler will defintiely be back in some capacity given his participation in this video with Jirard, which just aired on the channel: That being said, balancing him against other content creators has always made his shtick seem less hostile; I expect this is the plan going forward, outside of reviving interstitial/quicknews style Sessler's Soapbox stuff. As of right now though, it's not really clear what his full capacity will look like, or if he will be headlining X-Play again. Given that Morgan has only shown up in the Holiday Special, I'm very curious what her role will be especially due to her current work being more behind the scenes.

i don't find games scary under most circumstances so I have never considered this, less noticed it in any game I've played. Thread Game of the Year 2020 Voting Thread (Voting open from January 27 through March 1)
2020 is over and I completed 76 games. Out of those 76, these are the best I played that were released in 2020. is without a doubt one of the most devastating games I have ever played. Not for the violence, the gore, or the trials it puts its characters through, but for the moments of quiet that pierce the chaos and highlight just how much hate can burrow into a person before it hollows them out completely. Few games have the courage to push its protagonists as far as Naughty Dog has brought Ellie, and even fewer do it with the honest compassion and patience Naughty Dog brought to the second entry in their beloved series. Featuring dense combat arenas, truly astonishing AI (especially on Survivor and Grounded difficulties), and some of the best performances and visual language of any video game ever, The Last of Us Part II feels like a game almost completely without peer. I didn't think I wanted a sequel to The Last Of Us, but I am grateful Naughty Dog showed me I was wrong. is a reunion, one that cares deeply about its legacy and the people that enabled it to become the property it is. A massive love letter to all things Final Fantasy VII, Remake reinterprets and re-aligns years of misguided, albeit beloved, compilation content into a razor-sharp rumination on the nature of creative pursuits, the relationship between audiences and artists, and the debt we owe to the characters we create and the stories we tell. It helps that the game is superbly well balanced and features one of the best RPG combat systems of all time, along with an excellent Hard Mode to tackle after the game is completed once through. Final Fantasy VII Remake is a rare title that remembers where it came from and more. Every once in a while a studio comes around that, after spending a few years experimenting with form and refining their talents, sends a jolt through the industry at large and demands to be heard. With it is clear that Supergiant Games is no longer messing around. Combining aspects from their previous games, with Bastion's isometric combat and loadouts, Transistor's complex upgrade system and compelling performances, and Pyre's character-first approach to storytelling, Hades manages to take the absolute best aspects of their previous works into a new era of polish and prowess. I normally do not like Roguelikes very much, but Hades experiments so much with the standardized form of the genre that I would be a liar if I said it did not have an answer for every gripe the genre has been grappling with for the past few years. With the community here and elsewhere championing the game, it's clear Supergiant has a long career ahead for us to look forward to. Do you ever feel so frustrated with the world that you want to scream into the void just to hear the echo? Do you ever feel like making art just for the sake of flipping the bird to the man trying to dictate how you can and should live? Do you immediately assume the worst of any authority figure? Well that last one's a given, you're on Resetera. But if the other two things sound interesting to you, then maybe is the game for you. Translating to "Red Sky Generation", Umurangi features a cast of freelance photographers covering a United Nations occupation in Tauranga, New Zealand as they try to navigate the occupied zone, participate in counterculture, and make rad art in the face of a global crisis. Taking cues from Sekai-Kei anime, Jet Set Radio, and Vaporwave malaise, Umurangi Generation is protest art at its finest. Talking any more about the story would spoil the surprises in store for you as you navigate the streets of Tauranga, so just remember: Don't take pictures of was the surprise of the year, a stunning detective game with a sharp Vaporwave aesthetic and some of the best moment to moment character writing of any game in recent memory. Solve a massive conspiracy and unravel the tangled past of this endless loop of islands and its undying, eldritch inhabitants. Sacrifice plebian subjects to the unknowable cosmic horrors behind space. Hang out with an ornery, naked psychic dog-alien named Shinji, and jam out to some of the best mallsoft this side of 猫シCORP. Feel eyes open on the inside as sentences like "I was born on a synthetic island in a different reality and forced to worship gods that want to rule the world" suddenly begin to not only make sense, but sound like reasonable justification for murder all things considered. The Sky and the Cosmos are one, but when Love Dies, only the truth remains. is by all standards a much more traditional game than most on this list. A remake of Half-Life, simply introducing it as such does it a disservice. Made by passionate Half-Life fans over nearly a decade, Black Mesa finally completed development last year and serves as a testament to not only the strengths of Valve's original design, but to the incredible talent and understanding of design that has been cultivated in the gaming community since. The Xen redesign that serves as the game's final quarter is an incredible reimagining and one that stands strong against the rest of the base game, and I was smacked with moments of tranquility and peace as the tables turned from Gordon Freeman being a isolated scientist trying to escape a facility to a powerful invader of an intra-dimensional alien homeworld. Black Mesa is a rare remake that elevates its source material, and in places, supercedes it with excellent offerings of its own. is a magic trick. A series of subversions, misdirections, and sleights of hand that mesmerize us into really believing that there's still some juice left in the gaming tank after all. Preoccupied with an almost childlike sense of wonderment and creative joy, 13 Sentinels bleeds passion from every line of dialogue down to the beautifully rendered, painterly backgrounds. The gameplay in 13 sentinels takes cues from ergodic literature, fusing visual novel segments, RTS gameplay, and the scouring of an internal lore wiki to force players into the role of an investigator and arcaeologist of narrative, and boy howdy is it riveting. Don't get worried if you are ever bored, either -- the game never stops zigzagging across genre and perspective, constantly toying with form and structure to shake things up right when you are getting comfortable. came at a perfect time. Right when the world felt like it couldn't get much worse, Tony came back around to show us how to shred again. With a fuck-yeah-power-pop energy this remake introduced a bevy of new skaters to the classic game including the series first trans skater, added some excellent music to the mix, and reminded us all that sometimes all it takes to be a good game is solid level design, some depth to mechanics, and a killer 'tude. might be my most controversial inclusion on this list, but I've always believed that a game does not need to be a lot to be good. While I understand the critique against its length and its price point, Resident Evil 3 really is just more Resident Evil 2 -- and really, is that so bad? With a focus on action gameplay and tight pacing, Resident Evil 3 cuts a lot of chaff from the meat of its source material's bones, and for those with an open mind this is one of the game's greatest strengths. Leaning into replays, time attack, and mastery of the game's mechanical systems, Jill and Carlos have never been so cool. Similar to the Final Fantasy VII Remake, it's clear that Capcom is interested not just in revisiting its classic titles, but also editing them to fit a more modern sensibility and focus the brand. If this is the new standard, then we are in for a fun future indeed. -- Now, I do my best to finish every major release every year for voting purposes but with supply for the new consoles limited and quite a few titles releasing broken, here's the short list of titles I missed this year: And that's a wrap for 2020! Can't wait to see how this year pans out. Good luck, Have fun.

They do the same thing with vienna sausage and I can't help but feel like it's kind of gross. Like, yeah, the worms (and sausages) taste great but the water is just... Icky for some reason. Anyone agree???

Thread V (DMC5) is possibly the worst character gameplay wise in an action game.
Good post. Fully agree. I also think the thread title is kind of an interesting innuendo. It is true that V is the worst character in DMCV, and that he is less interesting than Dante and Nero from a gameplay perspective. He simply does not have as many tools or options in most situations. But he is not controlling character action game character nor the one with the worst gameplay. Like, if we're being charitable and not counting Musou games as action games, we still have Lucia and Dante from DMC2 for pointlessly poor action gameplay. We have Mad World, and FromSoft's Ninja Blade. There are plenty of worse action game characters that play worse and are less coherently and holistically designed than V.

Thread PC Emulation People: Help a Total Newbie Out
PS2 games are generally easy to emulate and aren't going to be super hardware intensive; You could easily function with a decent Ryzen and an old graphics card (honestly a 1070 is perfectly acceptable for this). Most compatibility issues with PS2 emulation are on a functionality level and aren't super bottlenecked by hardware -- many of the games that don't work simply don't work correctly no matter how strong a PC you have, so you don't need to worry too much about hardware. Just get a decent CPU and a relatively recent graphics card and you should be fine.

Really, Really depends on the topic. But for learning how to like, Hack my 3DS? Article. 100% of the time. If we are discussing like, being stuck in a game or wanting to learn a technique? 100% text. Screenshots aren't even necessary most of the time. Give me the HTML formatted GameFAQs guide any day over a rambling 14 minute long video that I'm gonna skip through a bunch anyway. It seems like they had no official communication about this decision yet. That is why people are dragging CDP. It is extremely spineless to go on the horn to say you are rescuing a beloved and intriguing game for good PR only to then pull back less than a day later because of nebulous, undefined "gamer" complaints. I totally disagree that this game says nothing meaningful. It is a game about contending with the legacy of one of if not the most popular RPGs of all time. It is explicitly about living under the shadow of a previously told story and trying to do justice to characters that people, creators included, love. Every aspect of the script and story is part of this. This is wildly ambitious and interesting storytelling. I am in for the rest.

I only pick games that have come out for this calendar year for my GOTY list. But I still play a lot of games from other years too; A game being on my GOTY list does not mean it is the best game I have played this year. I also generally don't like to make a list until I've beaten all the big, notable titles because it ends up making it seem like I'm giving higher accolades to things that I don't feel strongly about simply due to sample size. My current GOTY list looks like this: 1. The Last of Us Part II 2. Final Fantasy 7 Remake 3. Hades 4. Half-Life: Alyx 5. Black Mesa ——————Big Quality Gulf———— 6. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim 7. Resident Evil 3 8. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 ————Another Big Quality Gulf———— 9. Superhot: Mind Control Delete 10. Animal Crossing New Horizons Notable Games I have yet to play but should probably be evaluated: Now, if I had to list the best games I played this year, it'd look something like this So yeah, there are some good games on the list from 2020, but looking at what I've played all year long, I feel like 2019 and 2018 provide most of the meat. Games are really grounding on psychedelics, so the effects aren't as crazy as you would expect. However, I've played a few games while tripping that were at least enjoyable due to the sensory load. Thumper and Tetris Effect in VR are great. Furi is excellent. I played Katana Zero in its entirety in one sitting while tripping on a herculean dose of shrooms two days ago. It depends on what you want it for, and if you can actually drive 4k. If you can't drive 4k, maybe look into getting a high refresh rate monitor. 1440p×144hz is a fantastic spot to be. Size isn't really that meaningful on its own -- pixel density plays a big role in visual fidelity. It depends on how close you'll be sitting and what you are looking for. I rank rereleases and ports for the year they originally released when compiling GOTY lists generally. Full remakes I count for the year they are released in, though. When playing Moon, for example, I consider it a 1997 game because it was designed in 96/97. Its game design is rooted in that time and a rerelease does not change this. It is contextually a 1997 game even though I played it long after then.

CRTs draw images differently than fixed pixel displays. As such, Aliasing is not as much of a concern. Thread BIZZARE QUESTION-do you ever get nostalgic for graphical imperfections from the past?
It's very nice. It allows me to play games with graphics settings cranked way up without needing to worry about resolution for clarity. Control at 1024*768 with full RTX at 120fps was amazing, and it looked better than it did on my fixed-pixel 1080p monitor. CRTs went out before their time. On the topic of discussion, as many people have noted games used to be able to utilized and account for the benefits of a non-fixed pixel display while also sidestepping issues like low resolution output aliasing simply by nature of how the tech worked. This is why a lot of old games do not look like people remember them looking -- because they were designed around these technologies that died for the sake of convenience rather than a pure performance benefit.

This is gonna be a real doozy. When I was a child, my mom and I would play games a lot together. She loves horror and adventure games, and it was never a big deal since I liked spooky stuff and never really got too scared. I have this really fond memory of playing an adventure game with her that I was a first person point-and-click adventure game from sometime between 1995-1999. The game, as I remember it, was a kinda gothy vampire game. The big thing I remember is that there was one point where you tried to get into a nightclub, but a sterotypical looking goth bouncer character said we didn't have "enough credits". I can't remember if it was voice acted or my mother read the dialogue aloud. I think it was voice acted. I've tried really hard to figure out what this game was. For a long time I assumed that it was related to Vampire: The Masquerade, but I've since played both of those games and know for sure it isn't Redemption, or, obviously, Bloodlines. I thought it was Gabriel Knight 2, but that didn't seem right either looking at gameplay footage (unless my memory is so warped that I'm completely mistaken). Does this ring any bells for anyone? I would be over the moon if I could figure out this long-lasting mystery.

Thread What remasters that have replaced the originals for replays for you?
Most remasters, in my mind, replace their originals unless there are massive performance issues. Pathologic Classic HD, Majora's Mask and OOT 3d, and Dark Souls Remastered all fit the bill for me. I don't really see a point in playing the originals ever. Same with things like Kingdom Hearts. They are utilitarian -- they bring over missing content and do their job. No reason not to use them over the others.

Thread What's your "most stressful games" Top5?
Ice Pick Lodge games take the cake. No matter how good you are at them, they are hard as nails and constantly require attention and focus. Pathologic 2 is without a doubt the most difficult game I have ever played -- not because it is difficult to complete, but because it is almost impossible to go the entire game without having to constantly re-plan and make decisions on the fly. Things are constantly changing, your needs are in constant flux, and the game state actively shifts as you play. The Void and the original Pathologic are the same way. Engaging and flawless experiences.

Don’t worry, we’ll get a fox-engine remastered Silent Hill 2 Pachinko machine sometime soon. Re-recorded with Japanese voices, so they don’t need to pay any of those pesky royalties. Realistically speaking I think it’s a safe bet that these games won’t see rereleases any time soon. Not even rereleases of these ports with no bells or whistles added. One can dream, though.

Funny, I just reinstalled this yesterday. Interestingly enough, I got Silent Hill 2 to work fine for the most part with mods, but trying to get Silent Hill 3 running flawlessly on my PC has been a bit difficult. I can't get the game to capture my mouse, even in fullscreen with the necessary mods. I had to install an entirely separate program + reconfigure my monitor setup just so that I wouldn't accidentally minimize the game due to the cursor moving out of frame when I was trying to quickly turn in combat. That being said, Silent Hill 2 "enhanced" really does look and run pretty great once you get everything installed. It's only getting better as time passes.

I am really interested in this game, and just started it, but have run into what I think are more than a few bugs. A lot of misaligned doors, doors that won't open, and comically, some doors that are fully open but any time I click on them it tells me they are locked or unusable. I was able to get into straight off the bat simply because the door spawned in completely open and moveable with the caveat that any time I touched it the little warning saying it was locked popped up. Other times I've run into doors that appear openable but just will not move. Once, I opened a door fully before it just randomly slammed shut any time I let go of the mouse button. My sanity did not decrease, so I cannot tell if this is working as intended and is haunted, or if it is just bugged out. I'm playing at 240fps, so maybe the physics really just don't like HFR. I really want to play more, it seems very interesting, but I genuinely can't figure out how to progress due to all the bugs I've run into so far. Maybe I'll start over later and see if capping the framerate fixes any of the issues.

Weird, Pathologic 2 has run flawlessly for me and I've played it three times. No one else I know has run into issues. I don't think it is anywhere close to a technical nightmare. Not sure what happened with your save, but yeah, the game is definitely underappreciated. It is one of the best games of all time and most people haven't even tried it -- let alone even been able to encounter bugs. Pathologic 1 is somewhat dated, but I've also never run into any issues on that game and I put 150 hours into it.

Thread Pathologic 2 is developing quite the Game Design Analysis following...
Just make sure to buy lots of food on the first day! You can store food in the cabinet in Big Vlad's house once you meet him, until you eventually get your hideout. That's the thing with this game, it's not actually particularly convoluted: the game expects you to do what anyone would do during a Pandemic. Buy food and stock up on medicine. avoid infected people, try your best to keep clean. The interesting stuff comes in when the game juxtaposes these core principles against quests that make you decide which of these principles are actually necessary or important. The thing that makes this hard to understand is that most of these ideas are completely secondary systems in most games, but Pathologic puts them front and center, which a lot of people struggle to reconfigure their priorities around. Your #1 Goal should be surviving, and once you have that down, then you can begin thinking about the quests. In most games, quests would always take priority, so it's easy to see that most people would find this design difficult. If you are super scared of the difficulty, play on Cocoon or Larva setting, or, just make your own custom difficulty in the menu. It is actually exceedingly difficult to truly screw yourself out of beating the game, even when you are constantly dying. Oh, and whatever you do don't take the Fellow Traveller's deal.Pro Tip: Always walk diagonally in Pathologic 1. The game treats movement speed as individual vectors, so holding two directions makes you walk 1.45x as fast as normal. This is an easy, non-cheat way to gain a leg up.

It definitely does! I just wanted to call out that over time the connections to MS have diminished. It is interesting in this context -- TSC quite literally Kills the Past of MS by making the game largely irrelevant in the overall canon. I think it's probably the most clever way to get around the canon and IP issues, but I just like to warn people not to expect any huge revelations from MS. Thank you for your hard work on the OP!Thankfully I am not the only person working on it, though it's still a little bit too early to announce actual progress on the patch. Much like Miizzurna Falls, there are some technical hurdles to get past before we can fully begin implementation. I'd say the script is probably around 50-60% done, not counting editing, though.

As a fan of RE since the beginning, RE7 felt to me like a major return to the design ideology of the original trilogy. The combat I think is perfectly serviceable, and the looping, claustrophobic but expansive design of the Baker estate really brought to mind the key design element of the first few games -- their maps. I never had Boss HP or slowness issues, so I can't really comment on that. That being said, I actually wasn't in love with the slimy/smelly art direction. I like the photorealism, as you've stated, but I could have done with less slimy walls. Nonetheless, I feel like this game is very much oldschool RE in design.

Thread Gaming related experiences that are gone and never coming back?
I have one that isn't really so much from a specific game, but a way of consuming games. When I was younger, I used to love renting games from the video store. I would go to sleepover a friend's house for a weekend and we would do a 3 day rental for a game usually. Most of the time, we would rent whatever weird game piqued our interest, and play it "co op" by passing the controller back and forth. I played so many games this way. So many niche, weird PS2 games that I never would have played otherwise. Games I might have stopped playing had I never had someone else to lean on, or had I needed to buy them at retail. Tons of older games too -- N64, PS1, even Genesis stuff at the time was still at the video store. It is a real shame that this is not something that exists anymore. Redbox is around, but it only carries the newest releases on a rotating cycle. The joy of discovery and comraderie just isn't there anymore. And what with being an adult, there are few people or ways I could even do a pass-the-controller like experience with.

The absolute last thing I want from this property would for all of the difficult and challenging themes to be thrown out in favor of a simpler trajectory for the narrative. If we are doomed into a trilogy I would love for it to be extremely experimental and nontraditional and willing to change the status quo for the sake of the narrative. It would be a disservice to these last two entries if they went an easier or more palatable route. This doesn't mean I want it to embrace some misguided grimdarkness and leave everyone dead, or that I want Ellie to not be a part of the game. I just would hate to see her very complex and nuanced narrative turn into a standard three act structure where everything else gets brushed aside for the sake of fandom being happy about where she ends up. The best and most impactful stories are often the messiest and most difficult to process. I crave more of that. That is partially why I love where 2 ended, and why I think it's a perfect stopping point.

I recently rewatched all of the MCU films including The Incredible Hulk, in order, and Thor 2 definitely stuck out as the worst to me. I don’t love IM2, but I’d honestly take it over Thor and Thor 2 pretty much any day of the week.

I felt that all the characters were human and the narrative had a very human core. Again, the execution left a lot to be desired and I could have done without the big setpiece, but the narrative thematics are what kept me tied in. I don't think Grounded Plot automatically makes a good narrative. Lots of surreal, philosophical stuff have really amazing character work and writing. I wish the ending wasn't as bombastic as it was, but I am here for the characters and character writing. FWIW, I don't like Kingdom Hearts or most other Nomura work. I think this is the first time he has nailed a really clear and focused narrative through line. It's just the surface level plot that ended a little weakly.

Thread Did you like Final Fantasy VII Remake's ending? [POLL] [SPOILERS]
I don't think it needs to be all or nothing like many people seem to think it does; defeating the whispers is defeating the predetermined the characters had before. Now they are not to die. They are free to live and alter their choices -- but that didn't change that the Reunionists are still out there trying to bring Jenova and, Sephiroth together. That is still the goal, and Aerith seems dead set on stopping him (again). The only difference is that the whispers aren't around to Nothing about that really sets up or implies that, say, the Temple of the Ancients no longer exists, or that the Forgotten Capital and Nibelheim are suddenly no longer relevant. We still saw visions of Meteor, Wutai is still set up (perhaps even moreso) as an opposing nation the gang will still go to, and the Turks and Rufus are still chasing Aerith. Like, it seems like the message to me was that this was about toying with ideas. Altering things and seeing where the pieces fall this time. What does an FF7 look like if Cloud has hints that Aerith may die? What does an FF7 look like where Jessie and Biggs and Wedge Where does that put our protags? Will the team run into Jessie at the Golden Saucer, and will Wedge end up helping them exfiltrate from Wutai? Will Biggs be there for Marlene and the rest of the slum children? Are those changes big enough to ensure Sephiroth's total annihilation? Now that they aren't being hounded by whispers we can see this play out. It will undeniably bring change, but it will be in the form of rippling consequences, not a total rewrite.Basically this.

This game isn't crying about the compilation though. It is a celebration of it, and of all of its fans. It has throwbacks and references to even the books that barely anyone has read. The game isn't crying about it, it's reflecting on it. For all your posturing about it only being good for people who like surface level stuff, it seems like what you wanted was a surface level remake of FF7? That's not a bad thing, but it is pretty much exactly what the game is commenting on. You might not want what you got, but that doesn't mean it has nothing going on under the surface.I am pretty sure the rest in just gonna be a pretty close remake of the original with just a few variables swapped. A new Game Plus run with slightly different variables. It will still have all the setpieces fans love, just with some changes. I don't think there will be any Xehanorts or Organization members popping up out of nowhere. Just like this one was.

I don't think they are? I think all of the steps along the way will be similar, but the outcomes of events at the stops will be different, meaning that in the end, we will have a different result. Like, I have no doubt we will be heading to the forgotten capital again, with the major difference being who is alive and how that event plays out. How the tiniest ripples can have ramifications. I don't think it's a surefire slam dunk but I think that's what is being set up. Feel free to bookmark this post and dunk on me in 3-5 years if Part 2 in drastically different and the events of the original aren't major key points. Full license to do so. I just think they are setting up what will effectively be a Good Ending New Game Plus run. I don't think nothing will be different -- there will be changes and additions just like this one, but I think the idea that it's gonna be a completely unrecognizably different game and story that utterly abandons the structure of the original is a little silly. Now whether or not Nomura and Co can deliver on this setup is entirely up for debate. I am expecting Cloud to save Aerith in a very trophy anime Gotcha way and I am bracing for how stupid it will be.

The point of the ending is that these characters will not be doomed to their fates from the original, not that they will not go on a completely different journey altogether. All of the major plot points from the first game are still set up to happen -- the Gang still needs to stop Sephiroth, Go to Cosmo Canyon, stop Jenova, who is free again, etc. None of that stopped existing just because they beat the Whispers. The only thing stopped is the Whispers' constant Canon Enforcement trying to get people to die where they did in the original. I have no doubt things will change, they need to, but I still think we are gonna get all the hits.

I like the ending specifically in spite of the surface level details. I like that it is a game commenting and iterating an what came before, with a really poignant message about what it means to be a Creator trying to battle with the legacy and expectations of what they made before. That doesn't really sound surface level to me lol. The surface level stuff with the ending is what was executed poorly. The deeper stuff was what worked.

Thread Did you like Final Fantasy VII Remake's ending? [POLL] [SPOILERS]
For what it's worth, I hated Advent Children and its stupid spectacle because it was spectacle for no reason with no real message or point. I dislike Crisis Core because it is a terribly designed game with characters that ultimately don't do or say much in the grand scheme of things. Ultimately I think the game devalues Zack as a character for the sake of giving the audience a spectacle. I was fine with this ending, as sloppy as it was, because it had a very clear message and said something about the nature of remakes and commented on the artist-audience relationship in a way I found very interesting, especially in the context of FF7 and the near-monumental legacy it left behind. Like, the people saying this ending had no artistic point or integrity must have been blind. It was artistic and symbolic almost to a fault; it put everything else aside specifically to deliver a very clear thematic message. While I think it was sloppy in execution and those last chapters weren't great, I am excited and interested to see where it goes, in good faith.

Looking into it, this appears to be a common default on lots of Linux distros, as it's baked into X, I just don't know if there is an easy way to edit it or turn it off without borking selection in general...

As I've mentioned before, I have a gaming laptop with Ubuntu Budgie installed that I use pretty frequently (every day for simple productivity tasks and reading/bed gaming) and then my gaming desktop and translation/video production station in my home office that is a 100% windows machine. This is less to do with not having faith in proton and more just because I'm a linux newbie and I'm using my laptop as training wheels. Even with a very "light" windows install with basically nothing other than games and notepad++ installed, I run into issues on the Windows machine frequently enough that I'm looking forward to permanently switching to Linux sometime in the near future. I just recently ran into a huge issue with borked windows updates that prevented me from installing Japanese IME... which, as a translator, made my life basically miserable. So yeah, As of right now I'm about 40% Linux 60% Windows depending on my workflow, but that percentage is slowly inching towards Linux every day. I had some issues with Kubuntu (it kept reverting to nouveau no matter what I did, could not get it to stay on proprietary) so I'm just using Ubuntu 18.10 but maybe I'll try out some of the others to see what I like. The only thing I ended up "losing" on this laptop in the transition was my keyboard lighting and my screen brightness control. It's weird, the keys actually do seem to register on-screen (with the little indicators popping up), but nothing really happens when they are pressed. Streaming rights are complicated; Some of the DBZ content has agreements with various providers as a result of predating a lot of streaming services. There is no one stop solution for anime but between Funimation, and VRV (crunchyroll/hidive) you can find a pretty massive selection of stuff.

Thread Will Xbox Series X/S come with expandable SSD drives as a bundle? Will they come WITH the games ON the SSD? Like graphics cards that come with games?
I am a little confused by the title because games don't typically come "on" graphics cards and I don't think I've ever seen a graphics card come with an SSD. It's usually just a download code that gets emailed to you or is in the box. So I assume it might be like that, as is currently the case with most bundled games.

Any time there is a case issue or a need to swap parts you typically need to go through a massive amount of hassle. So that's mostly why. Mineral Oil PCs look rad but it can take days to let it drain out fully when you want to swap stuff out.

I work infinitely better from home than I do in an office, in the entertainment industry. I find it kind of baffling that Netflix, a company on the forefront of goddamn home streaming, would be so curmudgeonly about this. Aside from production level stuff, I really don't see much of a loss from not going into the office.

Thread What genre is Neo Genesis Evangelion?
I think it's a horror-tinged bildungsroman. I don't think it's necessary to get super complex. In Japan it might be referred to as Sekai-kei. We live in an era of constant genre mixing and subversion so honestly I think the easiest way to approach this sort of thing is just to take the simplest approach. Edit: I've come back to also say that Annihilation is not a mix of genres. It is very overtly .

I suppose they might also use "Mokushi" and leave off "roku", but it literally is the term for the biblical, proper noun Apocalypse. Not that these discussions come up often on the street in Japan, but it is what it is. Not sure what there is to doubt about this.

You might be thinking of the YA novel "", which many people for some reason expected there would be an adaptation of during a brief period of time. Edit: I suppose it isn't fair to say an adaptation, but it was a common discussion point on Zelda forums and I remember chasing theories down where people believed that a new zelda game was going to take ideas from Portal of Doom, and this was very hilarious.

Thread It's finally happened, HW: Age of Calamity Japanese sub title is "Apocalypse of Disaster" (Fake Zelda title made up sounding name is official)
I think the main issue here is that we are debating a literal dictionary meaning against the pragmatic usage of the term; My point was not that there aren't other ways to say apocalypse, just that it is absolutely a word used when referring to the Proper Noun Apocalypse. It isn't some completely foreign and unheard of word with pages and pages of nuance. It may "literally" mean "The Biblical Revelation", but its usage is often fairly localized as Apocalypse, and implies, simply, the (lowercase a, unproper noun) apocalypse. If I'm wrong about the average person using it, then that's absolutely fair. I am just speaking from my anecdotal experience on that one; I didn't mean to cast doubt on anyone's ability to speak Japanese, just that I don't think it's fair to drag the OP and imply heaps of nuance in an over the top video game subtitle where there isn't much. There's certainly a reason why the localized title is not "Biblical Revelation of the Great Calamity". I'm not sure what I would be achieving by being deliberately "untruthful", I was just giving my two cents as a Japanese speaker; I thought it might be valuable, but it clearly was more complex than I was willing to give it space to be. I apologize for being incorrect.

Yeah, Calamity is the word I would have personally picked, but I don't think it's an egregious difference. "Apocalyptic Calamity" is a decent more localized translation that reads better in English while preserving the exact meaning. I personally think this sounds just as edgy and silly.Sekai no Owari is for sure the only other phrase I would have suggested, which is why I said it was just a "strong" chance, haha. Unfortunately, it is not the phrase they used in the title, and Apocalypse a fitting translation in the context of the title.

I guess my experience living in Japan and speaking Japanese for most of my life is just wildly out of touch, then. Even playing games and reading manga dealing with the apocalypse it isn't uncommon to see the specific phrase when referring to the end of the world. There are certainly other ways to say it, but in all of my time speaking the language it has not been controversial or weird to use the term Mokushiroku in this context, nor to translate it directly as "apocalypse".

Yes, I am aware; this is why the official English title is not just a direct translation and has a more localized title. I am just saying it isn't unfair to also look at the Japanese title and be amused by how edgy it is, because it certainly is edgy. No amount of lenient translation or nuanced approaches will make it less over the top, haha.

For what it's worth, Mokushiroku is the word we use in Japanese when referring to the apocalypse. If you ask someone on the street what the end of the world is called there is a strong chance they would just use the word Mokushiroku. The translation spit out by GT is not unreasonable or off. This isn't a particularly nuanced title and it does sound just as silly in Japanese as it does in English. For context I speak Japanese fluently and have a degree in translation.Basically this.

Is the shit-terrible, constantly looping, short OST for the PSP remake of Persona 1 killing your desire to play the game? Enjoy this , so you no longer need to listen to the bizarre engrish and can instead rock out to the original, atmospheric PSX soundtrack. The changes to the soundtrack were very drastic in the PSP version, both limiting the amount of songs (meaning that specific boss themes or other unique songs were replaced by repeated generics), and wildly changing the tone. Many people have complained about the annoying new music, so this should make your day if the music was getting in the way of you playing this (still pretty terrible) game!

It doesn't, it'd be more like.. Dawn Bearer or Dawn Bringer. But yes, it is a very silly and edgy sounding name. It sounds like "A Killer" and then a mispronunciation of "korosu" which means "To Kill", but not in a way that is meaningful to any Japanese person or speaker.

Thread Today is one of the biggest days of gaming this year, which game you getting now?
I am sure it is cool but from the trailer it felt like it was laser focused on being an almost caricature of a game designed for indie game fans on the internet. Everything from the character names to the aesthetics felt 100% engineered. And I'm saying that as someone who has both translated a Suda51 game and listens to vaporwave pretty exclusively. It definitely fills a niche, but it felt extremely manufactured and pandery to me. That's the last thing I want from a punk art game. I will play it eventually but it is not the sort of thing I need right now, and I will probably wait for a sale much further down the line.

Thread Do you need a non stock cpu cooler?
I think if you want to push your hardware, like Steve at GN suggests, a stock cooler will sort of limit you. But for most people not trying to push performance, it's probably okay. They are experts at what they do, and they are used to pushing benchmarks and performance, but that is not everyone's use case and that is fine. In general though, I would say that there is some difference between stock and aftermarket. You'll get more headroom. That's mostly what it boils down to.

Thread For those that have a ps4 and xbox, was a PC worth it for you?
Absolutely. I basically only use my consoles for Exclusives. I like my X1X as a bluray player and Back Compat machine, and my PS4 let me play Bloodborne, so that was nice, and I don't regret either purchase. As a result, I pretty much game only on PC. Extremely high framerates, tons of customization options, way more sales on games and way more games in general to play from a decades-old library make it an easy sell.
