GamingThread Why women criticise sexualised character designs (READ OP)
Reason User Banned (1 week): Extremely sexist post, telling women what they can or can't talk about, after coming back from a month-long ban
To a certain extent I agree with OP on females in games. If a game is heavily action or combat oriented and features females performing said action or combat I'd like them to look more the part in terms of having visible muscle tone and being decked out in combat appropriate gear. However, this desire comes from an entirely different place. In my case I simply appreciate the female form and think females actually look cooler than males when they're fit and decked out in battle gear on top of being sexy, it's my own preference. For example if I'm playing an MMO and there's a muscle slider I'll always make full use of it and try to go for outfits that make my female character look like a badass. So if I were in charge of game design I'd make sure any females that are performing in combat look the part, however I would not do away with the eye candy and I'd make said combat appropriate females look idealized and attractive. I'd still have those eye candy females in the game but they'd be entirely there for the sake of fan service and would serve absolutely no role in the combat whatsoever. I love fanservice and the sexualization of females in games, however where I disagree with many other games is that the sexualized eye candy females should not be the playable characters or the ones performing the action. Now let me make clear that I'd still have these eye candy females as the cheerleaders, the maids, or any other non-combat service role since that's honestly where those types of females should be imo, not fighting. I think that if a female is going to be performing on the battlefield she should actually look like she could absolutely fuck shit up. So that'd probably be where I also disagree with OP and those against the sexualization of females in games, I think there's a place for these types of sexualized females and that's it's just a matter of better writing to properly fit these females in the game that makes a good amount of sense. But even disregarding that, this notion that it's somehow "problematic" to have these sexualized females in the game is one that I actually find offensive. Let's just set the record straight here and point out that yes, this sexualization is in fact done for the male gamer and usually something the Dev wants to do. The types of games that sexualize their females where never for any of the people who'd find it offensive to begin with. It's not like there's some kind of plot to demean females through games and promote them to be over sexualized IRL, it's simply something that's done to get the attention of your typical male gamer. So don't treat it like it's this huge problem that needs to be addressed, it absolutely isn't. There are games that don't sexualize females and those are the types of games that OP and those that share that sentiment should focus on. I don't agree with complaining about it because it gives the impression that companies and Devs are somehow doing a bad thing by having these sexualized females in their games, and that simply isn't true. There's nothing sexist about wanting to have an overly sexed out female in a game and enjoying that, it's perfectly normal and doesn't cause any harm to anybody besides those that can't cope with views they don't like and can't, for whatever reason, disregard it. I could make the argument that games which don't sexualize their females are somehow problematic and prudish, but my argument wouldn't be any less valid than those of you complaining about games that do sexualize females, it's all subjective. Nobody is committing any fouls and that's my problem and those that are so negative towards you complaining's problem. You're all on this high-horse and acting like some kind of civil rights issue is at stake, it absolutely isn't and you all really need to tone it down. That this thread is 100+ pages is ridiculous. Not only isn't complaining like this going to not change anything, but will actively set many people against you to defend their hobby from this absurd criticism. Like I've said before, I think Anita is incredibly toxic for even making such an issue about females in games the way she did, because it creates a narrative that she's objectively right and those these companies and Devs are somehow the bad guys when that's just simply not the case. It almost feels like a group of outsiders trying to muscle in and make demands while acting like they're righteous. Stop it.

Reason User warned: comparing this community to fake feminist trolls on Twitter, mocking their concerns, accusing them of hurting their cause
EDIT after mod warning: It was really not my intention to offend nor mock anyone. I'll stay out of the thread from now on. If someone wants to reach me about it, please use MPs This, and the are the kind of hyperbole i'm talking about. Risque designs doesn't make a game a . Taking on Xenoblade 2, wich is the hot topic today, i can't help but thinking that those are really the designs the artists had in mind, gross or don't, and Monoloth/Nintendo wanted to respect that, and maybe, just there's no ulterior motives behind them. As far as i read about the game it seems to be well written and there's not much focus, if any, on sexualizing the characters whatsoever, wich would contradict the claim of a game and characters designed to pander only a determined demographic. You know, there's a spanish twitter account created by the right-wing forum forocoches posing as a feminist twitter account and dedicated to post ridiculous and overblown statements with objective of hurting the cause. This thread reminds me to that account sometimes, to the point of making me question the validity of some claims. There's also the claims that imply that only sexist otakus buy those games, wich maybe should be taken in account too.

According to there is no link between videogame consumption and sexist attitudes in gamers. As a matter of fact video games don't need to appeal to anything or anyone. If some games cater to people who want to see T&A it's because they're obviously in demand. Well, who says video games can't be the place for self-indulgence? If somehow everyone was required to play video games I would agree with you, but that's not the case. At the end of the day no one is forced to play anything.

They not care. The Japanese are more open-minded than other countries in terms of sex. Specifically for my taste they take light years to other countries. They do not have so many prejudices. Thank God, there are no white knights in Japan and that's why we get amazing designs without censorship today. And as much as it bothers some of them this is part of their culture, manga and anime with designs of this type. And it will continue like that without changing, that luck that we have fans of the anime, the manga.

Look in medieval art women were portarayed as morbidly obese. That appeased their wealthy wives. But the athletic village girl and maid was always there. Take the reality behind closed doors as you will. Human height is determined by genes and with proper nutrition the average height went up quite a bit showing a dormant trait spread through many western populations.

Reason User warned: trolling and/or failure to read OP and follow moderator instructions
Look, I'm basically all about developer freedom, and the (paying) market dictates what gets made. Gaming is a for-profit, entertainment medium. Its not a social service. For the most part, things get made because there is an audience that wants and is willing to pay for a certain type of product Sorry guys, but I'm against telling any dev to not make that "fanservicey" game that's targeted towards a certain male audience because honestly, why should they be denied the product they like and would want to purchase? I'm sorry, but I don't get the "outrage" all the time, and all the calls for this to banned/changed/censored, etc. If you don't like the looks of a certain game, don't buy it. If enough people agree with you, the game will fail commercially and I promise no more games will be made like that. Yes, its as simple as that. Of course, there is also the chance that enough people will buy the game and make it a success. No, it didn't succeed because the devs "inflicted" the game on us, and the ignorant masses bought it, but because the game found an audience that supported the game because of what it was trying to do. You should accept that someone made a game for an audience that isn't necessarily yourself. Sorry, it happens. But, you say, females make up half the audience and there is not enough female centric games?- then ladies (or guys who feel strongly that our fellow sisters aren't getting a fair shake) get computer science degrees, learn programming, gets jobs at devs and change their demographics and overall culture, and ultimately work on getting more of what you want made, or make your own indie lablel and make the game that suits your own fancy. If it appeals, then people will buy it. If it doesn't then they won't. But honestly, standing around banging a drum against certain aspects of games you disagree and think shouldn't be made is pointless, and remember there always is another opinion. Spend time with the things you like, skip/avoid the things you don't. Its the key to happy gaming (and a happy life in general).

Reason User banned (1 week): repeated and persistent trolling across multiple posts
Very good question. It's a leftist thing. They believe they know what's best for everyone and have a compulsion to regulate everything. I can see where this whole thing is going. What the left wants. Eventually, the left is going to get the government to form something like "interactive entertainment content board". It will be run by some random unknown unelected people who will go through every game's content for "hate speech", "sexism", "racism", etc. They will determine what sort of content we are allowed to consume. And just like every other regulation, it will do more harm than good. First of all, it will require tax payers money to run it, publishers have to pay a fee to get their game evaluated for 'harmful' content, which will lead to more delays in release dates, because they might be forced to redo game assets the board finds offensive. In addition to that, it will add more cost to games, indies will have difficulties going through all these regulations and last but not least, creative vision is being altered. This is my prediction. It's what the left wants. They want to regulate everything. They want their subjective vision to govern reality.

Here's the thing. Women happen to have such bodies, but they're not the only ones with said bodies, there are works of art that share said body type. Statues, dolls, drawings, all manner of art shares possession of said bodies. The female body design is public domain, it belongs to no group. Eventually there will likely be fully functional indistinguishable objects whose sole purpose is to serve and please. Barring legal issues, these objects will share the same human body design used by humans. If I happened to look like a broom, it matters little if I predate the broom. The broom would be an object that just so happens shares my appearance. When people talk of brooms or use brooms, I shouldn't be offended by such.

I'm not even going to bother with this. Well, seeing how most, if not all the characters used as examples aren't even close to sexualization or just so minuscule that you have to resort to "camera angles" or simply tight clothing. A few characters in a big roster of fighting games that seem "sexualized" in your eyes doesn't mean the game has a problem. Also, here is another question I've been meaning to ask. Even if this game was dead or alive tier nudity, how would that be such a bad thing? My girlfriend and sisters don't mind this type of stuff, and in fact love playing as Mileena from Mortal Kombat. You can claim anecdotal evidence all you want, but the point is that this is such a nonissue since female gamers who really care about games wouldn't care about the characters or how they dress, they would instead care if it's fun. This is the thing I've been seeing lately that instead of gamers having fun with different games, people have to bring politics into things and dictate whether this or that is bad. Now I think I should stop commenting since the mods will probably ban me for trying to "derail" the thread, even though I'm not trying to do that.

Reason This user was banned for 1 month for this post. We're not going to entertain discussion or defense of content sexualizing under aged children, whether real or fictional.
Let me rephrase then: why it be illegal? Child pornography is wrong not because it pleases pedophiles but because children are actually stripped naked and made to pose for a shot or even worse effectively forced in sexual intercourse. Drawings and CG do not have this so the fact that such productions are "creepy" can't be a reason to prohibit them as there is nobody hurt or exploited by this. While I still find such content particularly fucked up and I'm not interested in little girls still doesn't sit right with me to criminalize any victimless behaviour

Games are full of half naked men with pounding muscles and textured nipples. Maybe in one out of hundred games there is a woman who is modeled in a sexist exploited way - and only then it becomes a "big deal". The hypocrisy knows no boundaries. If there is someone who should be angry, it is the men. Men are some of the most exploited creatures on this planet. The sexism against men is ten times worse than the one against women. Just watch any Hollywood movie and count the half naked men compared to half naked women, I swear you will be surprised by the ratio. Muscles everywhere, men are shown as sex objects much more often than women. And remember that all these products where men are being exploited, the producers are mostly men. How is it when the producers are women? Just look at the Japanese ikemen-gay games where almost all the staff are women. They draw some of the most sexist shit on this planet and make all men look like sex slaves to women. I do not like this debate.

Reason User was warned for invalidating others members' perspectives based on anecdotal evidence. The thread has many patient women and allies. Please listen to them.
I'm sorry that this bothers you so much. Personally I don't know many women that play console video games. So I don't really understand the perspective. All of the women I know spend time playing games on their phones and their tablets. I shop; a lot. I spend a great deal of time talking to other consumers and enthusiasts that are buying video games. They are pretty much all dudes. And when it is women, 7 out of 10 times they are buying for someone else. I had a lovely 15min conversation with a young mother just the other day that wanted to know all the ins and the outs of the Switch so she could buy one for her children. If you want to boil it down to its most simplest nature, video games are made by guys, for guys. They are the ones driving the vast majority of the revenue on console game sales. There are plenty of guys that like these games. Developers are supplying things that meet this demand. Some developers are also fortunate enough to create their own vision free from outside control. So they can make whatever they want to make. If a good percentage of people are repulsed by a title, then it won't sell well, and future iterations likely won't get financially supported. But they do sell well. Because people like them. The vast majority of people don't have any problems of principle with either MGS V or FF XV. I, too, am surprised there aren't more women making video games directed towards women. That way you could look past many of the games that were obviously made for other audiences. I'm not sure why there aren't more women making video games. I'll admit that I don't know much about the barriers in the industry that prevent more women from making games. But everywhere I go, everywhere I shop, everywhere I have conversations online, it's mostly dudes. If there were more women buying console video games I'm sure that you'd see more console games for women. It's kind of a catch22.

Reason User warned: concern trolling and extreme mansplaining
1. IMO it's distasteful to insult designers and call their designs "trash" multiple times in a single post, no matter how much you hate them. Criticisms and insults are two different things, and I think your post was leaning to the latter. 2. Your title is misleading. Nowhere do I find why women criticized sexualised character designs. It should be titled "Why I criticized sexualised character designs", simply of the fact that you were not speaking for other women besides yourself, nor you providing any statistics to back up your claims(how many women would insult the designers the way you did? for example). 3. Are you implying that men don't criticized sexualised character designs as much as women do with a thread like this? Is there any reason and what's your intention to minimize men with your thread? 4. Quiet and Cindy and Mario and Kratos, etc. are game/fantasy characters, so asking for them to be treated like real people is baffling. FYI Snake and Raiden were running around naked in their games too(not just Quiet), and none of the characters in FFXV were wearing appropriate clothings for combat(not just Cindy). So do you see what's wrong? You are asking for fantasy games to be realistic and you are fighting for the rights of game characters. 5. Quiet and Cindy are side characters who are barely in their respective games. Did you really let that stop you from enjoying the games? Seriously? I just hope that people can play games the way they are meant to be played and try to enjoy them as much as they can, and know the differences between games and reality. Do you not understand that while you are protecting the rights of game characters you are actively insulting real life people(game developers)? Do you really think that you are accomplishing anything here in a gaming forum? Personally how I would fight for women's right in real life: Vote, donate, protest on the streets, educate, get involved, and behave as a decent human being in the real world. Insulting game developers in a gaming forum is just not my thing personally, that's all.

What you can do is stop being sensitive to it because nobody needs unnecessary stress in their life. I'll never understand why people choose to focus on what they don't like. Why look through at the world in a negative light? Why find things to complain about? What is the point of living if you surround yourself in negativity and stress yourself out by worriying about things beyond your control? Everybody, gaming is about having fun. If you don't like something then don't associate yourself with it. It's really that simple. Find things that you do like and focus on that.

Well, my point is ALL lives matter. White, black, red, green and pink. Granted, the term "all lives matter" has been used to hell and back by conservative media as a push against BLM, but I like to think MY definition is juuuust a little different from theres: There's no color, . You crack us open, we're all made of the same gooey shit. Barring a few....anatomical differentiations, I'm exactly the same with men and women, and with regards to any sexed depictions of either one. I see no logical differentiation in sexes - probably why I'm bisexual! To me, men and women offer the exact same stuff in just different places, hence I tend to treat them the same. Maybe I'm...stupidly optimistic thinking that everyone will one day see past the barricades I see past. Or maybe I'm just fucked up and am a deviant in every way possible. But, this is regardless an opinion discussion, so here's my opinion: Complaining about stuff like this is silly. It's a double standard - for every female depiction which someone says is negative, you can find a male equivalent. And cherry picking to me is cheating. In times like these, I remember the Romans. They used to have this festival called Saturnalia where they celebrated and worshipped, well....Saturn. Naturally. Throughout Saturnalia, social castes were set aside, and sexes were set aside. You could literally be walking home with groceries and see people wandering about in the nude casually, or even having group sex out near the fountain square. Hell, you could even swap those groceries for a warm body for a casual pump for a few quick minutes before going back on your merry. Simply put, NOBODY GAVE A FUCK BACK THEN. They just. Had. Fun. They lived and loved to the fullest. And now....now we can't even love without getting offended over something. Don't you feel it's kind of tiring?

Reason User Banned (24 hours): Thread Derail
This thread... Why do people think that all females feel this way about certain characters in a videogame? Because I'm telling you now, they just dont. You should change the thread title to "some" women. Also, why are some posters being warned/banned? Its a discussion...Its ok to disagree with others as long as the discussion is in a civilised manner.

Reason User warned: coming into a thread about women's opinions to denigrate them and say "why are you so mad"
I don't see how a game WOULD be a problem if it had slight sexualized female characters. Why get so mad? Just don't play the games. That's it. Don't ruin the fun for gamers who just want to play a game and escape.

Reason The user was banned for this post (3 days). If you don't care about the subject of a thread, and you don't care about the people posting in that thread, then maybe you shouldn't be in that thread trying to shut down discussion.
I care about me and my preferences. Not something bigger. I don't care if anyone is "fucking tired" of seeing such designs. I am not. I don't care how it affects, like any other sort of media, people's psychology or anything. Not everyone minds it. Not every woman, and definitely not me.

It's not the popular term. It's the exclusive term. People need to not be so fragile. You could literally call me a specimen, man, boy, bubba. Idc. There are more important things in life than a name.

No one said there aren't any other issues in play. But if we want to have a serious conversation about a serious subject, it's better that we're not scatter-brained about the discussion. If you're not able to able to remain clear-headed and on topic, by all means skip my posts. I'm here to discuss the thread topic regarding character designs, even if you're not.

but those are YOUR feelings and sure probably some others, but now you are taking a voice away from all women, some who may just be fine with it. you want devs to pander to you instead of horny teens it's just as bad and sad that you don't see this. also the fact you specifically say "horny male" is insensitive to the LGBT community. why specify males? what about gay males who could care less? what about lesbian females or might like it? You may not agree with dev design choices and you have every right to do so, but you made this to push your agenda for your reasons, nothing else. You don't speak for everyone but you feel you do funny you assume i'm a man? also you must have never played DR3?

Reason User was warned: insultingly condescending, trolling. "Don't like it, don't say anything" could easily apply to you posting in this thread.
your open criticism is an attempt to change the way devs design characters, and posting on an open forum is an attempt to get others to feel the same way. to say it's anything but is dishonest. IDK how old you are, but when i grew up we were always told "if you don't have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all" hiding behind criticism is simply a ruse. Do you find it ok if someone was to walk up to you in public and criticize you? you'd probably find it rude and offensive as would anyone so "it's just criticism" really doens't fly The dev chooses to design that character that way. you say my comment is subject to criticism, i agree, as is yours. but your "jesus fucking christ" attitude shows you don't want criticism you just want people to agree with you and get outraged. My view isn't for or against. it's simply live and let live. If you don't like something, be an adult and ignore it. don't buy it, don't support it. that simple.
